J u s t t h e Fac t s :

Rich Webster was considered the man who put the "E" in "E-mail." Unfortunately, he was also the jerk who put the "b" in "Double-cross." Through ruthless wheeling and dealing that usually involved the outright theft of other people's ideas, he built his Webster Networks into a multi-bil l ion dollar Internet conglomerate. Along the way he accumulated many enemies. i

But even billions were not enough for a man driven by t h e unbridled ambition to control the hearts and minds of people in cyberspace. Webster was about to implement the ult imate computer communications program, code-named "Rosebud." In its final stage of development, Webs t e r locked himself and six of the most talented members of his elite development team into a specially constructed luxury suite/think tank. They would be completely cut off from the outside world in order to f in ish "Rosebud."

Each member of Webster 's team worked only on a port ion of the software. Only Rich Webster himself knew how the pieces f i t together and for what ultimate purpose. Only he had access to the network computer core that contained the assembled program.

That knowledge was to die with him because when the t ime locks opened at 7 AM, only six people walked out of that suite. The seventh. Rich Webster, lie dead, strangled; a mouse cord wrapped around his neck. His prized program, completed in the waning hours of the team's isolation, had been completely erased. I t was gone without a trace.

One of six people has murdered Richard Webster. I t is your job as a detective to uncover clues, disregard red herrings and even subpoena evidence in order to be the f i r s t to identify the killer, the motive, and the method.

Cause of Dea th :

The coroner has determined the cause of death to be strangulation by person or persons unknown. The killer used a computer mouse cord in the fashion of a garotte around the victim's neck. From the marks left on the body and the s-fress evident on the cord itself, the murderer used a significant amount of physical strength.

Time o f Dea th :

The time of death is estimated to be 5:15 AM, accurate within 30 minutes. The murder occurred sometime between 4:45 and 5:45 AM.

T h e Scene of t h e Cr ime:

Rich Webster's "Think Tank" was a windowless concrete bunker built on the grounds of his sprawling corporate headquarters. Known as "The Pentagon" to company insiders, it featured a single entrance that could be sealed by time lock for 72 hours at a time. No one, not even Webster himself, could open the doors once the lock was engaged. Although up to seven people could live and work comfortably while entombed within its 12 inch thick walls, nobody could to get in or out of Webster 's luxurious cell block until 7:00 AM of the third day.

Rich Webster designed "The Pentagon" himself and it re f lec ted many of his own eccentricities. A fanatic about being overheard, his office was double insulated and adjoined no one's. He had a phobia for public restrooms, so his was the only off ice with a private bath.

Webster 's body was found slumped forward over the desk in his off ice. There was a mouse cord wrapped around his neck tied with a single slipknot. His computer stat ion and The Pentagon's computer network core were both wiped clean of data. All storage disks in his off ice were blank. There were no signs of a struggle.

Fingerprint analysis of the crime scene yielded the following:

Rich's desk and contents of the desktop contained only t h e his fingerprints, with the sole exception of a coffee cup which also contained those of Rita Wright, an employee and the victim's girlfr iend. The mouse cord itself was wiped clean of any prints. Other computer equipment at t h e desk bore the Rich's prints as well as those of Just in Coder and Del Packard, both of whom are computer technicians employed by the Rich.

The Suspec ts :

Hugh Sottmale: Male; Age 39; 6'0"; 175 lbs.; Brown hair. Blue eyes

Forn;\er rival of victim. Gottmale's company stock price plummeted allowing Webster to absorb it for a song. Then he took on Hugh as his second in command. Hugh thought it was a handout, but sti l l took the job. During the time of death... Gottmale was in a meeting with Dee Leeter and Just in Coder in the Conference Room. He claims to have stayed there from 4:00 AM to 6:00 AM.

Rita Wright: Female; Age 26; 5' 5"; 102 lbs.; Brown hair. Blue eyes

Talented software engineer who was also romantically linked to the victim. The two shared a tempestuous relationship that could sometimes turn violent. At the time of death... Rita claims to have been in her off ice from 4:30 AM to 7:00 AM doing her nails and makeup. Apparently, it takes her over 2 hours to appear presentable.

H.T. Amal: Male; Age 41; 5'2"; 150 lbs.; Black hair. Brown eyes

One of the founding fathers of the Internet, but no one knows it. H.T. has worked for Webster for years with Rich getting most of the credit and all of the money. At the time of death... H.T. claims to have been working at his station from 1:00 AM until the doors opened at 7:00 AM. He was distracted by the loud snoring coming from the next off ice from about 3:00 A M until 7:00 AM.

bee Leeter: Female; Age 35; 5' 1"; 125 lbs.; Blonde hair. Blue eyes

Software quality control specialist that can find the most obscure bugs in any computer program. A loyal Webster employee since the company was founded. At the t ime of death... Dee was in a meeting in the Conference Room with Hugh Gottmale and Just in Coder from 4:00 A M until 6:00 AM. She left only once at 5:00 A M to use the restroom. She returned within 15 minutes.

Del Packard: Male; Age 43; 6' 6"; 300 lbs.; Brown hair. Blue eyes

There's nothing that Del Packard can't do with computer hardware. He has been responsible for every nut and bolt in the Webster empire and has been with Rich Webster since the very beginning. At the time of death... Del Claims to have been sleeping at his workstation from 3:00 AM to 7:00 AM . He is apparently a loud snorer.

Justin Coder: Male; Age 24; 5' 11"; 175 lbs.; Red hair. Blue eyes

Alias "The Webcracker," Just in Coder is a notorious computer hacker that has stolen millions in his brief career as a computer thief. Webster had him paroled into his own custody in order to exploit Just in's knowledge of computer security techniques. A t the time of death... Just in was in a meeting in the Conference Room with Hugh Gottmale and Dee Leeter from 4:00 AM until 6:00 AM. He le f t once at 5:00 AM to use the restroom. Both Dee and Justin left the room at the same time to use the facilities. He was back within 15 minutes.

Amal: We chatted for about ten minutes. She closed my door when she left, but I could sti l l hear him.

Detective: You left you meeting with Dee and Hugh around 5 AM Where did you go?

Coder: I had to go to the restroom. I stopped at Rita's of f ice on the way to borrow a magazine.

Justin Coder Detective: How long were you occupied?

Coder: I hope no one went in there for awhile. ^--^

Detective: Answer the question!

Coder: Ten minutes, alright! I dropped the dumb magazine back off with Rita and went straight back to the meeting.

Detective: What was the purpose of the meeting you had at 4 A M on the day of the murder.

Sottmale: Coder and I had been working on a new program that we wanted Dee to debug for us. Since there was no other work to do until t he doors opened, we thought it was a good time to get

Hugh her attention, t Gottmale

Detective: You and Justin Coder were collaborating? , £ '

Gottmale: Yes. I t was a pet project of mine at my former company and could be of great benefit to Webster Networks.

Detective: Did they mention anything about killing Webs te r?

Packard: That's all I heard. I didn't even know if they were serious.

Detective: What was the meeting about with Hugh and Justin? * :

Leeter: I 'm not sure. They wanted me to debug a program they had been working on, but I couldn't find a darn thing wrong with it. I t was a total waste of time.

Dee Leeter

Detective: Who was in the room when you returned from t h e restroom?

Leeter: Both Hugh and Justin were there when I got back. Just in had left the same time I did. Hugh was deep into his program. I don't even know if he saw me come back.

Detective: Did you see anybody between 5 AAA and 6 AM?

Wright: While I was busy fixing myself up around 5pm Justin Coder stopped by on his way to the restroom. He helped me open a jar, because I 'm such a weakling, and asked to borrow something to

Rita Wright g j j g g ^^^^ Sty/e. He d idn ' t look too pleased.

Detective: Did you see him go in there?

Wright: I certainly heard him. The walls are like paper. He returned my magazine about 10 minutes later without even a thank you and I made sure to throw it out.
