1. Review figure 6.1 on page 146 in your textbook. Read the paragraph provided aloud. How did you feel reading the paragraph? How would you know if you had a student in your class with this type of reading disability? How would the disability manifest? What is one thing you could do to assist the student with reading?

After reading the paragraph, I felt confused and a little disoriented. It took me a long time to figure out what some of the words were. My reading speed slowed to a crawl. Some indicators for this type of learning disability would include, when given a passage, a student omitting words and lines while reading, they may disregard punctuations, focus on minor details, they may also have trouble with matching shapes and symbols. One method that could be used to assist the student would be to teach them how to sound out words while reading them.

2. Review figure 6.1 on page 146 in your textbook. Complete the math exercise. Did you find this math exercise frustrating? How would you know if you had a student in your class with this disability? How would the disability manifest? What is one thing you could do to assist the student with math?

The simple math problem suddenly became more difficult than calculus. The question was very frustrating to solve. Students with this type of disability have persistent trouble in memorizing basic math facts in all of the operations. Instead of knowing simple operation rules, they tend to count fingers, pencil marks, or scribbled circles. They have trouble matching shapes and symbols. One way to assist the student would be to provide specialized material. Provide them with written out instructions e.g. write nine multiplied by nine instead of 9 x 9. Another assistance can be to read them the question, so they know what operations are being used with what numbers.

3. After reading the descriptions of the characteristics of students with learning disabilities and students mild intellectual disabilities in chapter 6, explain three major ways these students are different from each other. That is, how do students with LD differ from students with MID.

Learning disability is a disorder with problems in using & understanding language, which includes listening, reading, speaking, writing, spelling and math calculations. It does not include a learning problem that is primarily the result of vision, hearing, or motor disabilities, of mental

disabilities, of emotional disturbance, or of environmental, cultural, or economic differences, or limited English language proficiency where as MID deals with mental disabilities

The intelligence level for the LD student is usually normal or above their age, where as MID student would have an intelligence level 2-4 years behind their age group

MID students have a problem with dealing with daily living, where as LD students generally have a problem only in intellectual environments, if not dealt with appropriately.
