Integrating work experience within your chosen field of study allows you to apply your skills and knowledge in a real life environment. Many departments offer modules that incorporate a placement or they provide students with the chance to work on a project with external organisations. These modules are designed to help you reflect on your experience, enabling you to articulate what you’ve learned to future employers.

Sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm with children and young adults can be a uniquely rewarding experience. If you think it’s a challenge you’d like to take, our schools volunteering modules offer placements aligned to your course, designed to help you gain transferable skills while you support pupils to develop their confidence, learn new skills - and perhaps discover a future career.

WORK EXPERIENCE MODULES

SCHOOLS PLACEMENT

What if you could apply your academic knowledge in real-world situations - and get paid for it at the same time? The FASS Placement Scheme provides extracurricular paid placements typically in third sector organisations, local government and SMEs and can entail anything from marketing, PR and copywriting to undertaking specific research projects for host organisations. Many employers use placements to test out a new role and have frequently offered graduate roles to placement students.

FASS PLACEMENT SCHEME

Placements are a great way to get involved in the areas of work that really interest you the most, and, in the process develop a network of contacts which can prove invaluable when considering future career options.

GRANT HELM MA Conflict, Development and Security

Without the experience and skills I gained during the placement I would never have been able to pursue the career I’m currently embarking on. It gave me my first taste of the communications industry, an industry I now plan to work in for the foreseeable future!

WORK EXPERIENCE EMPLOYABILITY FACT

Every department in FASS provides students with the

option to undertake a module that incorporates relevant work

experience.

Of all graduates, those completing social science degrees are most likely to be in paid employment,

specifically in managerial or senior roles, three and half years after

graduating. (HESA, 2013)Would you like the opportunity to contribute to real-world research? The Richardson Institute Internship Programme (RIIP) allows FASS students to work alongside external organisations contributing directly to contemporary research. These unique voluntary internships provide FASS students with the chance to gain work experience in a research environment, developing key skills in research ethics, problem solving, report writing and analysis along with other skills that aim to develop students as researchers.
