“Hot Lips”-

Entry #1

Conventional beauty wisdom holds that warm weather calls for barely there makeup. This season, however, you’d be wise to defy convention. A host of designers—including Haider Ackermann, Dries Van Noten, and Angela Missoni—showed bright, bold lips on their spring runways. Violet, fuchsia, neon orange…these mouths didn’t whisper, they roared. Our favorite shade is MAC’s Ablaze, which practically redefines coral lipstick; there’s not even a whiff of Palm Beach society matron in this electric shade. Instead, it suggests the other side of Florida: a South American heiress lounging by the pool in Miami—or Judy Garland (who loved a loud pucker) crooning at the Fountainebleau, circa 1959. For maximum impact, lay it on thick, and leave the rest of the face nearly naked. It’s almost summer, after all.Read more: http://www.wmagazine.com/beauty/2013/05/red-lipstick-trend#ixzz2Sv3K4x4V

Review for “Hot Lips” Entry #1 (con’t.)

  “Hot Lips “

  Review by Derya Tektas

Beauty is everywhere. How does a person think they can become beautiful in our society? Makeup. The thing is, it’s almost summer. Summer is a time when not a lot of makeup should be worn because it's a time to be natural looking and bronzed. I chose “Hot Lips,” as my article to review because it caught my attention for spring and summer makeup ideas. The article mentioned that in the latest spring fashion shows, bold color lips have been trending. Colors such as “violet, fuscia, and neon orange” have been used for designers like Haider Ackermann, Dries Van Noten, and Angela Missoni. The bold colors are a new take for the spring and summer fashion style. Instead of “barely there” makeup, designers and makeup artists suggest using a bold neon color for the lip and a natural looking face to let the lips stand out. I really think this trend will be popular around the world. It is something new for the spring and summer, and personally, I think it would be a cute touch to an outfit for a night out.

MERGERS & ACQUISITIONS MAY 10, 2013 New York Times Religion to Be Sold to TowerBrook for $835 Million

BY PETER LATTMAN Entry #2

5

True Religion Apparel, the designer denim company, announced Friday that it had agreed to be acquired by the private equity firm TowerBrook Capital Partners for about $835 million.A deal for True Religion has been expected since October, when the company announced that it was evaluating a possible sale. TowerBrook will pay $32 a share in cash, representing a roughly 9 percent premium to where the shares closed on Thursday. The purchase underscores the rise of premium-priced jeans as a high-fashion staple and status symbol. Over the last decade, a variety of brands, including Paper Denim & Cloth, Seven for All Mankind and Citizens of Humanity, have fueled the frenzy for expensive denim, hawking their wares for upward of $300.True Religion, which, like many of its competitors, is based in Southern California, was among the fastest growing of these brands, fueling the demand for the perfect pair of frayed, ripped or faded jeans. It justifies its premium prices by using high-quality denim and having workers hand finish the pants with unique stitching or patterns. The company was started in 2002 by Jeffrey Lubell, who as a teenager growing up in New York would bleach bell-bottoms and embellish his favorite pairs of jeans with leather and denim patches, according to its Web site. He says of the company’s name: “There’s only one real religion and that’s people. And all the people in the world wear jeans.”True Religion started a retail business in 2005, and now operates 124 stores in the United States and 31 locations internationally, as of March 31. In recent years, the company’s growth has slowed as strapped consumers have shied away from its products.TowerBrook, the private equity firm that is acquiring True Religion, has experience owning upscale brands. The company’s portfolio once included the luxury shoe maker Jimmy Choo, which it sold to German fashion company Labelux.TowerBrook, which was spun out from the investment firm Soros Fund Management in 2005, also has investments in Rave Holdings, the movie theater chain, and the St. Louis Blues hockey franchise.

True Religion Review Entry #2 (con’t.)

Towerbrook has decided to purchase True Religion Jeans. Towerbrook is purchasing the company at $36 per share. TowerBrook is very familiar with purchasing high profile companies because they purchased other companies such as Jimmy Choo but then sold it to a German based company. True Religion was started in Southern California by a man named Jeffrey Lubell. He created True Religion because of his admiration for bleached, ripped, and frayed jeans. I think that selling the company is a very good idea since it is such a high profile commodity. Selling True Religion will help the owner make more of an income, and will also allow the company to transform and grow under a new franchise. I personally am very excited to see where TowerBrook will take the company and how it will turn it into their own brand. I do however hope that the style and foundation of the classic bleached and hand created jeans will remain the same. True Religion has always stayed true to their hand crafted and timeless product. If TowerBrook decides to alter that in anyway, it may become detrimental to the franchise in the long run and they may lose customers.

Coachella 2013 Street Style: VOGUE Leslie Kirchhoff

April 15, 2013 4:30 p.m. Entry #3

“The original festival frontiers women were all about freedom: expressing peace and love with flowing dresses and tresses, liberating their bodies and minds, bearing their bellies and weaving daisy-chain jewelry. These days, it’s a slightly different story. Don’t let the fringe fool you—Coachella is high fashion. But that doesn’t mean it’s any less authentic. After all, what could be more liberating than Katy Perry in chandelier earrings, Rita Ora in a chic crop top, or Alessandra Ambrosio in pair of neon jean shorts? These women go afield in whatever they like. Talk about free spirits.”

Article from VOGUE Magazine.

VOGUE: Review Entry #3

I chose this article to review because it allowed me to talk about what I really thought for this years big Coachella’s event. Coachella is a very big music festival/conference that is held every year in the United States. What is better than music and fashion combined? Coachella is a place where famous celebrities and the average lower, middle, and higher class citizen come together for the love of music and performances. In this article it stated that Coachella used to be a place where people were “free-spirited.” Artists and listeners would come dressed almost hippy-ish. Today, Coachella has turned into not only a music event but also a high profile fashion show. Celebrities were dressed in neon color shorts, chandelier earrings, and “chic crop tops.” Today, Coachella is not only about music; it is about dressing for impressing. Fashion and music have always intertwined, but now it is getting a little more serious.

Fashion Observation Spring 2013 Entry #4

9

For my fashion observation, I focused on women’s clothing. I compared two different types of people: my four girls that I room with in Columbus, OH, and the women I work with at a modeling agency (MTM). Each different woman had something new to offer and compare. The girls I live with are very laid-back and have the style of a typical college student. They wear sweat pants, hooded sweatshirts, crew neck sweatshirts, and a lot of leggings paired with flip-flops and a shirt that is longer length in the back. When they go out they wear bright neon colors, stripes, wedges, jeans, or sundresses. A lot of their shirts are sheer layered with a bralette or bandeau or tank tops. The pants usually have patterns on them too. For example; printed leggings are a big trend right now on Ohio State’s campus.

The women I work with were similar and different to the girls I live with. The women at MTM are always dressed like they are going out. It is formal and can range anywhere from leggings with a blazer and high-kneed boots, to a dress with Tory Burch jewelry, heels, and tights. I found that this style related to the girls I live with because they both wear a lot of leggings. Leggings are used for every kind of outfit and from both group of people I observed. I also noticed that wedges were very popular. In the workplace, and on campus, women are wearing wedges everywhere. The differences included the type of dresses and pants. When not wearing leggings, the women at my work wore dress pants or high waisted skirts with their shirts tucked in. They also wore long sundresses or high-waisted pants. The workplace was more formal and dress to impress. This season, the workplace is more formal and not uniform whereas my roommates current fashion trend for college is leggings or a sundress. College trends are more casual and wear everywhere and the workplace fashion trend for women is professional, polished, and individualistic. Everyone in the workplace creates their own outfit and college students tend to wear more of the same apparel.

5 Fashion Trends that will Appear Next Season Entry #5

Silhouette: Loose fitting. I believe that the look will be to not show curves and to actually hide them. Wearing loose fitting clothing will be unrevealing, sliming, and can be worn in the house and out too. It’s perfect for the everyday life.

Color :nudes, neutrals, and light colors (pastels). These colors will be trending next season because of the neon colors that are taking over right now. As a customer and consumer, I am seeing more and more people and retailers start to move towards the neutrals and creating colors that can easily be paired with anything. This creates outfits that are “classics” for anyone’s wardrobe and can be reused over and over again

for several different outfits.

Texture: Matte look. This look and texture will be popular next season because it is slowly starting to emerge now. A lot of accessories have this look and I think it will lead into fashion designers using this texture in their clothing. A lot of people liking it more and more.

Fabric: Polyester and Cotton. These materials allow a person to fit into a lot more clothes and for the fabric to shrink or stretch. It will contribute a lot to the grunge look.

Style: Grunge. I think this will be the next big look because a lot of the clothing right now is looser fitting. There are a lot of crop tops and pants that are baggy until they are cuffed at the ankle. This style will create clothing that can be comfortable and laid back for every size.

Left to right: Neutral colors in a

bedroom,simple earth toned look, women

wearing bold necklaces, high heels, shirts that

emphasize the waistline, and printed pants,

flats that are neutral and easy to go out in for

every occasion, menwear-bold colors,skinny

ties,printed socks,large face watch,jeans,

loafers, haircut- shaven on the side and longer

length on the top (styled).

H&M Entry #9 (1 of 4)

15

H&M Review- Entry #9

16

The first display from H&M, was really what caught my attention about their visuals. It was a large poster of Beyonce surrounded by mannequins that reflected what she was wearing in the picture. H&M was brilliant using a celebrity to display their store’s fashion because it attracts Beyonce’s fans as well as shows people what they could look like if they wear clothes similar to what she is wearing. It gives H&M a good name, and overall attracts people into the store. It was the focal point of the store and really caught my attention. The bright colors and celebrity being used made me focus on the store and no others surrounding it.

The second display caught my attention after Beyonce’s display from the store because it was well lit and showed several different ages of kids including toddler and pre-teen. I liked that H&M created a display that could appeal to several different ages. Not only does it appeal to different ages, but it also matches accordingly. The colors match, and also the clothes change with the maturity of the person. It looked very well thought out and I could see my sisters wearing something like that and being okay matching because they were all age appropriate.

Buckeye Room Review-Entry #9 (4 of 4)

18

Display One: I really enjoy sports, so this retailer also really stood out to me. This display stood out because of the coloring. Each section of the window had a specific color. The first display I focused on was all red. It displayed three different sports teams, a pillow, and 4 different kinds of sports. There was also a variety of clothing. There were shorts, pants, hats, a golf bag, tank top, and jerseys displayed. It created a look that any sports lover could wear and be comfortable in.

Display two: The second display from the store that caught my attention was the case with several different sports teams and a lot of styles for clothing. It was a lot similar to the other case for the store but instead it was not color coordinated. This was the only display that did not have the same colors. There was green, red, blue, orange, and white all represented within the case. There was also a buckeye necklace. I really liked that the case presented variety and was not focused on one gender. Once again, it created a display that was geared for all teens/adults, no matter what their style is.

Entry #10- “The Great Gatsby”

19

I decided to wait to do this entry until I was able to see “The Great Gatsby.” The film has been airing commercials for weeks now, so I knew that it was going to cause a big commotion in theaters. This film was supposed to represent the roaring 1920’s, right before the big stock market crash. The fashion in the film really inspired me. The men wore suits and ties (skinny, and bow ties), and the women were always dressed very fancy and elegantly. Women wore long eyelashes, bright colored lipstick, and headbands with their gowns or flapper dresses. The women also wore a lot of pleats and slits in their clothing and bobbed their hair. Their dresses were made so women could dance (Charleston), and their hair was cut short so they could wear hats. When the men wore suits, they were mostly plain, neutral colors, but they also added pops of color to their style. The suits were made mostly of wool at that time, and included three or four buttons on the front of the suit. A signature trait of men’s suits from the 1920’s was the how high the lapel was, and the two sets of flap pockets on the front of the suit. The pants that matched the suit had a crease down the center of the leg, and were made to hang down to the mid-ankle so that the sock could be seen too. I think that these trends will emerge in today’s fashion because of the movie that just came out and how popular it is, and because it is a new take on fashion that has not recently reemerged. It is something new and because bright colored makeup and more dresses are starting to reappear, I think it will slowly go back to dresses more often much like the 20’s. I also think that these trends will come about again because men are starting to wear more sophisticated clothes for everyday wear. I have seen more and more men dress in button-ups than a normal T-shirt lately. I think this will slowly emerge to wearing blazers and vests again. I do however think that it will not be as formal. I think our society will create a version of the 1920’s clothing that is a little more casual.

Entry #11 Alexander Wang Menswear Fall ‘13

Designer: Alexander Wang

Collection: Menswear Fall 2013

Target Market: Men ages young adult-adult

What Kind of Retailer would use this?: Nordstrom, Saks Fifth, Bergdorf Goodman, etc. Any high end retailer or boutique that sells men’s clothing

and outerwear.

My Critical Review: I really admire his style and collection for men this past season. I was attracted to his collection because it appealed to the cold weather (which I live in), and also was very stylish and sleek looking at the

same time. The coat looked like it would keep a man very warm and shielded from the weather. The shoes were high enough to cover the

ankles, an the pants were very high-end. Each element was simple and chic. The material also looked very comfortable and soft. I liked the blocks sewn together on the jacket and the varsity looking button up on the front. If I had to change anything it would just be adding a longer pant or a high

sock to cover the bare leg in the cold weather. I found it a little contradicting being bundled up fashionably and still showing skin on the

bottom. But beauty is pain, right? 20

Responsibilities of a Fashion Designer Entry #12 (1 of 3)

A fashion designer’s main responsibility is to create and develop pieces of apparel. A fashion designer should also have the artistic ability to sketch for design their ideas on paper or describe it to someone who can. A designer has the option of developing several different things; clothing, shoes, or accessories. A fashion designer is not only responsible for designing the clothes but also to make sure the process goes smoothly, the manufacturing, and making sure that the product is well marketed to the audience that you want it to be. A fashion designer is responsible for working with a lot of other people in their team, designing for specific clients, and staying true to their brand so they can gain a large fan base. Designers need to have an eye for fashion and predict what will be the next new look for upcoming seasons, as well as maintain their current line. Fashion designers may be responsible for dressing several different clients too.

21

Responsibilities of a Buyer Entry #12 (2 of 3)

Fashion buyers should be able to locate and bring in products that are right for the company or fashion designer that they are working for. A fashion buyer is responsible for staying true to the companies policies and morals for the clothing that they choose, and also bring in a lot of quality choices. Buying is usually a subdivision of the merchandising team, and must be available to work flexible hours. Communication is also very important to be a buyer as well as writing skills (writing reports). Buying for a company involves an “eye” for fashion and for the new and upcoming products that will be trending. Buying for a specific company requires time, knowledge, and most importantly, patience to find the right piece of merchandise that will sell and be true to the business.

22

Responsibilities of a Visual Manager Entry #12 (3 of 3)

A visual manager’s main responsibility is to attract customers into a store by the displays and clothing displayed throughout the windows and fixtures. They are in charge of displaying clothing that is current and popular to the brand or company they are working for. They are also responsible for replenishing and making sure everything in the store is true to the company. Visual managers should always have common knowledge of current marketing and merchandising methods, and follow a companies standards. They should be responsible for lighting, color, display, and the current trends displayed. They also need to be able to communicate with other managers of the store and employees to create an overall well kept professional looking atmosphere.

23

Fashion Don’t Entry #13 (1 of 4)

Bad Layering: People come in all shapes and sizes but you need to make sure you

wear the right clothing to compliment your figure. Unfortunately this girl is not. The

shorts are too short for her body figure, and her top should not be layered to expose her breasts like that. If she layered with a crew

neck T-shirt, it would look a little better than the V-neck red shirt. The outfit does

not look tasteful and she looks more uncomfortable than stylish. Bas layering can effect men too! If a male layers two t-shirts or the wrong pair of pants or shorts with

boxers showing it can look very unfashionable. Layering is very important

for an outfit. It can make or break the look.

24

Fashion Don’t Entry #13 (2 of 4)

Too Long Hair: I have always loved long hair, and my hair is pretty long itself, but this women needs to make sure her locks are cut and styled. Nothing is wrong with

length as long as it looks like you groom it. The hair affects the entire fashion style and

overall creates a grungy look and almost looks like she did not try to get ready for the day. Hair is a very important part of fashion and hers is not doing her style any justice. Hair should always look clean and healthy. Men and women need to be groomed and

clean and look fresh every day.

25

Fashion Don’t Entry #13 (3 of 4)

Unpolished or Chipped Nail Polish: Fashion don’t for men and women! Chipped nail polish is unattractive and shows that you do not care about your hygiene. Not only is the nail polish

chipped but the toe nails also need to be trimmed. Fashion is not only about clothing, it is about the entire outfit. If you have bad nail

polish or untrimmed nails it will show and definitely not tie your outfit together. For

women, nail polish should compliment the outfit you are wearing. A women could find

out what colors are currently trending by looking in a magazine or simply shopping

around to see what colors are being sold. For men, trimmed nails are a must! Being clean

and trimmed ties together an outfit and overall makes your fashion clean and noticeable.

26

Fashion Don’t Entry #13 (4 of 4)

Bra showing: I understand that right now there is a new trend starting

(bralettes and bandeaus showing), but showing a bra that’s not supposed to be seen is not stylish. The women is wearing a tank that should be worn with a strapless bra. It helps that the bra is nude colored but it looks too tight and is pinching the skin on the

sides. If she added a lacy bralette or a cute tank top underneath the shirt it

would be a lot more fashionable.

27

Career: Production Coordinator Entry #14 (1 of 3)

28

I work for PINK in Columbus, OH, so I searched through our stores internal postings database through Limited Brand's website. The job title is Production Coordinator for Victoria's Secret in Columbus, OH. I am actually looking for careers right now since I graduate in May, so this was helpful to find. The roles and responsibilities include: coordinating and executing production for products, working with the product manager and senior coordinator, maintaining communications between other coworkers, working directly with vendors, attending fittings and costing meetings, talking with suppliers, working directly with the distribution centers, maintaining fact sheets for VSDP, attend weekly meetings, have relationships with cross functional partners, and creating seasonal departmental reports. The credentials included :understanding how a factory worked and all of the production steps for products, able to multi-task and work in a fast paced environment, Bachelor's Degree in business or merchandising, and computer efficient in Microsoft Office and Outlook. I think this job would fit really well with me. It would challenge me and also allow me to work in an environment that I enjoy. The challenges would be multi-tasking and getting used to a fast paced work style. Right now I work retail so I am sort of used to this but I would need to adjust quickly. I would also have to get used to working with a lot more people in different departments. I also would need to freshen up on my computer skills. The only times I use those programs are for schoolwork or my internship. I would like to challenge myself and take classes to gain more knowledge. This is how I could overcome my challenges and also learn a lot at the same time.

Career: Segment Producer Entry #14 (2 of 3)

29

I found this job through Google search online. I am very interested in television, styling, modeling, and casting. This job was on the Comcast Entertainment Group website. The job opening is for G4’s Attack of the Show. The job is in Los Angeles. The responsibilities and roles include: producing the topical monologue segment of the show, overseeing the production team for the show, coordinating anything that has to do directly with the script, changing scenes and editing the script/film, research topics for the show,  and share ideas of my own and pitch ideas to team. There were quite a few requirements for this job opening. The job requirements included: having a strong editorial speaking voice, having a background in writing and comedy, current knowledge of entertainment, the Internet, lifestyle, and new technology that is popular and used. The job position also asked that the applicant has a bachelors degree, and experience in post production and television/tape experience There is going to be deadlines to meet, time-management skills to acquire, and able to work together in a team and a friendly manner. I think that I would fit well into this specific job because I love E! and everything on that channel. The job gives me the opportunity to do what I love to do and also further myself into the entertainment field. I would be involved in the post production of the show and see everything that is currently trending in the industry. I am organized, have good time-management skills, and can multi-task with several things. This job opportunity would be perfect for me. I am able to multi-task and work with professional clients as well as customers and potential talent. This job is preparing me for what I would like to do in the future and I believe it would help me with this job. The only obstacles that I would face is putting myself in a new environment and new location. I think that I would struggle finding out how to get places at first. I usually am bad about getting places on time if I do not know where I am going. Other than that, I think the other obstacle I would have to overcome is working directly with post production and managing people. Since I do not have a very strong background in journalism, I would have to pull past knowledge from writing classes that I have taken in high school and college. I would also probably take some writing classes to further my skills and help me succeed within my new career. I also think that it would tie in fashion because I would work directly with the actors and the production. I would be involved with the current fashion and technology trends. Overall, I think that this job description fits exactly what I would like to do! I would love to eventually move to Los Angeles and work with Comcast Entertainment. I think it would be a steady job and I would be doing what I love. I would also constantly be involved with current trends and know what exactly is going on in the technology and entertainment world. I would be directly put into a major city that is known for entertainment and fashion.

Career: Director of Pre-Production Entry #14 (3 of 3)

30

The career listing I found was on Limited brands website. My manager at work told me about the job posting, so I decided to look it up. The job location is in New York City, New York. The title of the job is director of pre-production for Victoria's Secret. I am interested in this position because it is in a big city where I would have the potential to grow within the company and work doing what I love. The position would allow me to work with other people in different parts of the company and also travel across the world for work. The roles and responsibilities include: hiring and coaching the pre-production team, planning, performance reviews, lead a represent teams, develop a seasonal calendar, monitor calendar, partnering on production challenges, influence strategic ideas, manage vendors and partner relationships, work for category budget, travel overseas, and work with brand strategies. The qualifications for the job include: Bachelor's Degree, 10 plus years of experience in the manufacturing field, global garment production experience, ability to lead a team, understanding of product cost, bringing flexibility, and complete understanding of the retail business. The biggest challenge this job would present to me would be the travel and all of the knowledge I would have to have. This position requires a lot of background and experience. I would have to work my way up to this specific position. It will take time and practice to understand the fashion business. To overcome this challenge, I will have to work for other companies or in jobs very similar to this to acquire the knowledge needed to move up.
