Welcome to the Spring Fashion Issue, for which we’ve tracked this season’s key trends from the catwalks to the streets of Liverpool. We’ve scoured the high street for the most wearable fashion and accessories to see you through Ladies’

Day and the Grand National at Aintree (one of the highlights of His & Hers’ social calendar) in style. Key features include ‘All Dolled Up’, Women’s Style Editor Hester Brodie’s playful accessories’ shoot from p16, and our ultra-luxe new-season menswear shoot from p32.Fashion journalist, Hannah Ramsay, hot-footed it to the capital to compile our London Fashion Week Street Smart special from p20; while Men’s Style Editor, Luke Trevaskis, focused on tracking down Liverpool’s best-dressed men, with a little help from his Street Smart team from p36.Regular columnists Jane Grogan (His & Hers’ fitness expert) and Chris and Mark (our skincare gurus) share their tips for preparing for the season ahead; and we’re proud to introduce new columnist Liz Taylor - read frank and funny excerpts from her diary on p28.In a brief break from seeking out our spring fashion inspiration, the His & Hers team had a ball meeting readers during our latest magazine handout in Liverpool ONE. Thanks are due to Liverpool ONE, the fabulous Think Faces promo team, GModels, Superstar Social, and magazine contributors from Gala Casino and Tracey Bell, Liverpool, all of whom turned out to show their support while we handed out 1,000 copies of the February issue on one of the chilliest days of the year! The His & Hers team will be taking to the streets of Liverpool again soon, looking for the city’s best-dressed men and women for our Street Smart pages, and giving out magazines and a host of free treats in a series of high-profile locations around the city, from Lime Street Station to Liverpool ONE. We’ll be back on 1st April with another bumper fashion issue. See you next month.

KIRSTY DOYLE UNVEILS TWO NEW COLLECTIONS

Page 12: The Spring fashion issue

12

His & Hers fashion

It seems only fitting that His & Hers should put the spotlight on designers closer to home. This month has seen the launch of acclaimed Liverpool designer Kirsty Doyle’s shiny new

collections… and we love them both!A first time collaboration between Kirsty

and her talented younger sister Jessica, the mainline collection features bold graphic prints, another first for the brand, alongside the classic draped pieces with which Kirsty has become synonymous. Courtesy of Jessica, the print is based on broken facets of minerals, combined with the colours of an extravagant holiday in Barbados in the 70’s, and we think would hold its own next to some of fashion’s greatest prints. “Layering imagery creates different dimensions within the dress”, she explains.

But it’s not just about the print, look closer and you’ll see Kirsty’s softly sculptured silhouettes

inspired by 3D origami folds and pleats. “We wanted the pieces to be both wearable and desirable, and to have a luxury feeling that would work against softer jersey separates to give a contemporary LA look,” Kirsty adds. It’s this nod to laid-back sportswear - loose shapes and the pairing of the cropped marl tees - which makes this collection so fresh and effortless to wear.

We particularly love the Citrine Skirt (centre left) and the Anatase Dress (centre right) and could certainly see us wearing them, while sipping the cocktails on that aforementioned Barbados holiday.

And as if a mainline collection wasn’t enough, Kirsty’s also just launched the new collection for her diffusion line Kiki.

With a candy shop colour palette, metallics and frills, it’s the ultimate in pretty sophistication. Both collections are available now from www.kirsty-doyle.com

Heidi Range, Chico and reigning champion Sam Attwater will be the first celebrity contestants to join the ‘Dancing on Ice’ live tour.

After wowing more than one million people across the country in previous years with stunning ice performances, skating legends Jayne Torvill & Christopher Dean will embark on a sixth live UK tour of Dancing on Ice, starting in Newcastle on Friday 13th April, 2012.

Torvill & Dean will be joined by Sugababes’ singer Heidi Range, X Factor singer Chico and reigning ‘Dancing on Ice’ champion and Ex-Eastenders actor, Sam Attwater.

Sam displayed some of the most natural ability on the ice in the 2011 ITV1 series and live tour, working hard during each performance to impress the judging panel. He consistently pushed himself to achieve higher scores and more complex moves on the ice alongside his skating partner Brianne Delcourt.

Sugababes’ singer Heidi Range has performed at some of the UK’s biggest music venues and, with skating partner Andrei Lipanov, her winning smile and increasing confidence has gained her high scores on the ITV1 show every Sunday night.

Former X Factor contestant Chico is no stranger to performing in front of millions of people on television and is now proving to be one of the TV audience and judges’ favourites.

All of the celebrities will be trained and choreographed by Torvill & Dean, who will also perform routines choreographed exclusively for the live tour.

The three-and-a-half week UK tour will travel to arenas across the country. At each performance, the audience can vote for their favourite celebrity skater. Using the same format as the hit ITV1 show, spectators can use their mobile phones to vote by text for their favourite

celebrity. As with previous tours, all profits from text voting will go to charity. An impressive £106,475 has been raised to date, which has been donated to the Royal London Society For The Blind and Demelza Hospice Care for Children.

‘Dancing on ice’ will be coming to the echo arena on 1st-2nD may. For ticket prices anD booking Details, call: 0844 8000 400 or visit: www.echoarena.com

Fans of ‘Dancing on Ice’ (one of ITV1’s most popular shows) will be pleased to hear that the live tour will be coming to the Echo Arena on 1st-2nd May,

CandiCe, 29PhotographerRue du Mail Jacket, alberta Ferretti dress, acne Shoes, Chanel Bag. The first thing i noticed about Candice was her amazing statement hat. i love the draping of her coat and the light blue of her dress, but the clever injection of black stops this becoming too soft.

The gilet is also a statement piece, which probably should be ‘too much’, but i think it adds texture and another dimension to her look.

classic simplicity at its best.

SAMANTHA BUSHELL As a director in law firm Brown Turner Ross, Samantha Bushell specialises in family and matrimonial cases, and we caught up with her during her busiest time of the year.

“February is always one of my busiest times of the year,” said Samantha. It follows hot on the heels of ‘D Day’, the first week back to work in January. D Day is the legal profession’s busiest day with regard to people filing for divorce. “The festive season finds people spending more time together, and sadly for some couples this brings about a life-changing New Year’s resolution. My clients often raise issues that have caused tension for some time but were ignored because they wanted to maintain a sense of normal family life at Christmas. And the pressure of Valentine’s Day adds to the stress, so during the first quarter of the year I see more people who are looking to file for divorce than at any other time.

“I advise my clients to take some time to reflect because divorce isn’t an easy process and I want them to be certain that they have explored all options open to them before they proceed, especially if there are children involved.

“I am a member of the Collaborative Law Panel, which involves each party working with a lawyer specially trained in Collaborative Law. This process sees the parties work outside the Court process, setting their own agenda and meeting on neutral ground with their lawyers, in an effort to arrive at agreement on everything in an amicable manner. This can save time, money and - provided each party embraces and fully commits to the process - Collaborative

Law can vastly reduce the upset and anguish some family law cases can cause.”

Collaborative Law is a relatively new process to the UK legal system and one that Samantha believes should be used more in settling family disputes. www.BrowNTUrNErroSS.coM

cLArE DELvE When His & Hers caught up with freelance PR, Clare Delve, she was fresh from planning a series of creative campaigns to raise the profile of her Liverpool-based clients. This is just the latest challenge in a varied career that has seen Clare tackle everything from interviewing A-listers to news broadcasting to founding her own PR company.Clare told His & Hers, “I always wanted to be a journalist - or failing that, a singer!” While studying journalism, Clare embarked upon a work experience placement with Radio City. After learning the ropes, she was offered a job with the station when she was just 21, giving her her first break in broadcast journalism.Clare said: “I was there for three years all together and during that time I was lucky enough to do a lot of things most people don’t get to, such as interviewing Samuel L Jackson and Sir Paul McCartney.” Clare then moved to Radio Merseyside, where she honed her skills in broadcast journalism, before deciding to branch out into PR, working as a Media Manager for the Council. Following spending cuts in 2011, Clare felt that her job was under threat, so decided to bite the bullet and take a voluntary redundancy package, using her pay-out as the initial investment to launch her own PR company, Delve PR. Less than a year later, Clare has built up an impressive client list, representing thriving Liverpool businesses including Laura’s Little Bakery and Rhubarb and Custard.Clare said: “I think good PR’s all about finding out people’s unique stories and telling them to the right people. I want to give small businesses the chance to work with the right people, and opening glossy magazines and seeing my clients featured is the best feeling in the world.” Having spent a varied 13 years in journalism and PR, Clare’s goals for the future are refreshingly simple: “I just want to be able to continue with Delve PR, so that I can give people the opportunity to have their voices heard,” she explained with a smile. Every month, Jane Grogan will be sharing her expert advice

on fitness, health, mindfulness and life solutions.

Jane GroGan’s

Fitness Focus

Short-term fixes to health and fitness can be beneficial as just that; however, sustainable diet and exercise should

be considered as life choices. It is a good idea to address every aspect of fitness if you want to improve. A plan designed to suit your individual fitness needs is advisable, along with a training diary to monitor your progress and acknowledge personal achievement in the desired areas, which will help to keep you motivated.

Be realistic with your fitness goals: it takes approximately two months to build a sound fitness base; the idea is then to continue building on that base. True fitness results from a combination of methods, so look to include cardiovascular, strength and conditioning, flexibility and mobility into your plan. Look at all the fitness options, do a little research, or turn to a professional for advice.

You will find the different areas to be complementary – for example, as you become more flexible you will become stronger.

Find a form or forms of exercise that you really enjoy, that you look forward to and strive to work hard at. Remember that there is a fine line between dedication and focus, and obsession and addiction. Exercise should be seen as a positive, benefitting your life, but - like anything - it has the danger of turning into a negative; therefore it is important to keep perspective.

Be realistic with goals; think clearly about exactly what you are trying to achieve, and why you wish to achieve it. Remember that inner health is just as important as improving our outer appearance. We often take our bodies for granted until it is too late; prevention is better than cure.

If you wish to push your body to extreme limits, just be sure you are doing so for the correct reasons; it can be highly motivational and rewarding to work towards goals, such as a marathon, for example. But whatever you do, don’t let vanity guide you.

Introducing His & Hers’ new columnist, Liz Taylor, who’ll be sharing extracts from her

diary as she embarks upon her journey of reinvention.

losing it

I don’t like saying that I lost my husband. Not because it means he’s dead (although that

remains unbelievable) but because it makes me sound careless. I don’t like to say he passed away – because nothing about him ever did.

So in September when I begged the heavens for reinvention I wasn’t surprised when moments later I was offered a meeting at the Tracey Bell Clinic on Hanover Street. Nor was I surprised when I was offered the position of Business Manager, although I was mildly alarmed when I accepted it, and positively shocked when I realised I was quite good at it although out of my comfort zone most days.

It is February now. The month of love. And I know it’s trite but I really am beginning to love me again. Not the me I used to be (although I remember her fondly) but the me who is becoming who she was meant to be.

The frown lines I picked up at a funeral and laid down on an empty pillow are beginning to ease, banished with injections and the threat of imminent laughter with clients. My skin is shiny from pillaging medical skin treatments (Skinscription) rather than tears.

And what lasers and coolsculpting can’t reach as they tighten my skin

and resolve is in the sights of our Personal Trainer, Jane Grogan, who gives me something to get out of bed for – even if it’s 7am on dark mornings - as she teaches me about willpower.

Clients walk through our clinic for many reasons, come in a myriad of guises, and speak different languages; but they all ask for the same thing.

Whether it’s more hair on heads, or less for bikinis; a perfect-for-them smile or a pretty-for-the-night pout, what they are asking is ‘help me be who I should be’. Just like me.

Liz will be back with more tales from her life in the beauty industry next month.

His & Hers’ Social Diary: rounD-upA summary of the month’s events & happenings in brief.

Moore Media’s dazzling ‘dock crawl’Moore Media treated the Liverpool press to a truly memorable tour of the Albert Dock’s finest bars and eateries, showcasing the diverse array of food and drink on offer on the waterfront. Over the course of the evening, journalists visited GUSTO, Blue Bar, His & Hers’ new restaurant obsession: Spice Lounge (where we’d advise asking the team for their recommendations); Circo, Miller & Carter, and Revolution; as well as PanAm, Vinea and What’s Cooking. Our advice: if you haven’t paid a visit to the Albert Dock lately, it’s well worth returning to for some of Liverpool’s finest food and drink.

‘Find oneselF’ at tracey BellHis & Hers was delighted to attend the launch party of His & Hers’ columnist Jane Grogan’s new company, ‘Oneself’, at Tracey Bell’s Hanover Street clinic. Jane was joined by a host of VIP and celebrity guests, who tucked into tasty treats provided by event sponsor The Noble House.Jane Grogan explained: “Oneself provides a positive, yet realistic approach towards fitness, health and mind, therefore life.  We offer help and advice in all three areas separately or combined. Focusing on the core of what we believe goes into making you, you; a whole, rounded individual. By breaking down all three areas we can help you to achieve the perfect balance between mind and body, and apply it to your everyday.”

The His & Hers team joined hundreds of specially invited VIP guests for the glittering launch night of Southport’s latest eating place, the Ocean World Buffet & Bar in Ocean Plaza. Guests were greeted on the red carpet by a fire-eater and invited inside to enjoy champagne and canapés.

VIP guests included Danny Latimer from Desperate Scousewives and Everton legend Graham Stuart. All VIP guests enjoyed the seemingly never-ending buffet, choosing from Indian, Chinese, Italian, Mexican, Thai and Portuguese cuisine.

Cocktails served included the new ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ and ‘Oceano Beso’, which were named by competition winners Anthony Lopez and Tamzin Elliott, respectively.

Ben Aslan, owner of Ocean World Buffet & Bar said, “It has been an honour to launch my new restaurant in the resort; all the customers have raved about the selection of food on offer, and the atmosphere has been amazing this evening. Thanks to all my chefs, kitchen and waiting staff, who have really pulled out all the stops to deliver both first class food and service.”

Julie Goodwin of Superstar Social, who co-ordinated the event, said, “Ben at Ocean has totally embraced social media, which has played a pivotal role in the launch event - including the cocktail competition. Ocean understand the power of using the social networks in order to get their restaurant in front of a massive audience.”

His & Hers was proud to be one of the media partners for this stylish event, giving out copies of the latest issue on the night; and the team wishes the owner of this chic eatery a very successful 2012!

A recent straw poll of the His & Hers editorial team revealed that although we’d all visited a casino at least once, none of us felt entirely confident when approaching the tables. So we asked Miles Dixon, the manager of Gala Leo (Liverpool’s biggest casino), to share his top casino etiquette tips.

This month, Miles advises on how to play roulette or blackjack for the first time without looking like a novice.

Roulette Don’t hand money directly to the dealer! Dealers can’t take anything from your hands. If you haven’t played roulette before, don’t be afraid to ask the staff for advice. If in doubt, you can ask the dealer to place a bet for you. Don’t take colour (wheel chips) away from the table. Always ask the dealer to change them for cash chips, which can be exchanged for cash at the cash-desk or can be used in the bar or restaurant to buy food and drink.

www.galacasino.co.uk

Blackjack Try to avoid saying ’stick’, ‘twist’ or ‘hit me’. This will instantly give you away as a novice! It’s polite to ask other players if it’s OK to open a box or whether you can play behind someone else. If you play the end box, you have the final say, so don’t do this if you’re new to blackjack and unsure of how to play. It will annoy fellow players. If you’re planning a night at a casino and will be playing blackjack for the first time, it’s worth doing your research and looking up Basic Strategy (for the UK) online first.

HOTEL INDIGO

42

Page 43: The Spring fashion issue

Since its launch in June last year, the 4-star boutique hotel has quickly established itself as one of the city’s finest hotels, blending

contemporary, vibrant surroundings with personal, attentive service.

The hotel’s bold exterior design creates quite a presence on Liverpool’s Chapel Street. On entering, visitors are greeted by the unique design and décor of the hotel’s lobby and Cotton Lounge bar area, creating a welcoming yet contemporary atmosphere for guests.

General Manager, David Hughes, said: “From its colourful façade to its vivid, eye-catching interior, the design of Hotel Indigo Liverpool is locally inspired around the city’s cotton trading heritage, bringing a sophisticated feel to the heart of the commercial district.

“For tourists and business travellers alike, the hotel provides a comfortable, stylish base from which to explore Liverpool’s rich tapestry of culture, art, business and entertainment; making it much more than simply a place to sleep.”

The theme runs consistently throughout each of the 141en-suite bedrooms the hotel offers; each stylishly furnished with over-sized beds and plush bedding; and equipped with invigorating rainfall shower and a complimentary minibar.

The 130-seater Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill restaurant

combines the sophistication and glamour of quality food with an affordable menu that has something for every palate.

“Having such a high calibre restaurant within the hotel, as well as our more informal Cotton Lounge, provides guests with a complete leisure destination,” added David Hughes.

Open to guests and visitors, The Cotton Lounge makes the perfect area to meet with friends and enjoy one of the cocktails, specially crafted by Hotel Indigo’s in-house mixologists, most notably the signature Cotton Candy Martini, and venture out into the lively Liverpool nightlife.

With many exciting events taking place in the city in the coming months, Hotel Indigo’s popularity with visitors is sure to rise; and it has recently been announced as the official hotel partner of April’s Sea Odyssey - when the world’s leading Theatre Company will bring their Little Girl Giant for a walk around the streets of Liverpool.

Visitors will enjoy being on the doorstep of Liverpool’s fantastic calendar of events and can take pleasure in everything that Hotel Indigo and Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill have to offer. Mark and Chris Johnson White of Scousewives’ fame now have a regular column with His & Hers, where they share their impressive knowledge of products and

treatments that will take you confidently and goddess-like into spring. words: jean hill

Chris & Mark’s skinCare seCrets

With an eye towards Ladies’ Day and the Grand National, we quizzed Mark and Chris about the key components in

creating this season’s best look to take to the races.

H&H: Your new salon at Tracey Bell opens on 1st March. What’s your particular take on achieving an overall look that’s right for this season?Mark: We think that this season will be effortless natural goddess, with a natural glow and dewy finish. This means a definite no to orange tan or heavy makeup: we recommend Mii Cosmetics, Flawless Face Base for a natural golden finish. Tracey Bell’s Age Perfecting Mineral makeup gives a flawless natural finish. Sunglasses are going to be really big, especially for Aintree, and we’re really excited to be working with the Spectacle Warehouse.

H&H: What’s happening with hair this season?CHrIS: We believe that hair will be long, healthy and natural – ‘bohemian chic’: softer, textured, wavy, with dip dye colour: Sarah Jessica Parker meets beach goddess. We use L’Oreal hair products and we love Volume Riche Mousse and Beach Fizz to achieve glossy, textured locks.

H&H: What cosmetics can you recommend to perfect this overall natural look?Mark: The delicious shades of Miners Cosmetics Tin o’ Tint lip balm are specially designed to tint and care; and their cream blushers create the illusion of wonderful bone structure. To finish the look, Shellac offers nail polish that’s also a treatment - a brilliant idea.

H&H: What’s your best advice to counteract bulges and the winter spare tyre, until now carefully hidden under layers? Mark: Tracey Bell offers CoolSculpting Zeltiq weight loss procedures, which recipients are raving about. The results are amazing: a slimmer, toned body, without the risk or pain of surgery.

H&H: Now that the preparation is sorted, where are the hot spots to be seen before and after these racing events?CHrIS & Mark: We’d say the Newz Bar, Monique’s Cabaret - a classy burlesque venue; San Carlo for food and drink; and of course, start the day with a champagne breakfast.
