Edwardian 1880-1914
The “S” bend silhouette and the Gibson Girl hairstyle with elegant hats were
predominate.
This ea was heavily influence by the monarchy and at this time Brittan was the most powerful nation in the world. This era is also known as the age of optimism.
World War 1
(1914-1918)
With men out fighting the war Woman began to assuming the roles of men. This loosened up the silhouettes and hair was cut shorter due to safety precautions in the factories. Uniforms became more popular and for the first time women were being looked at as
independent individuals which lead to the women’s suffrage movement.
World War One ended June 28, 1919 with the Treat of Versailles.
The Roaring 20’s
1920s
The
silhouette in the 20’s took a rapid change and left the curves in the past. Dresses were straight and bright and short hair
reintroduced itself as “The Bob.”
Mens fashion became me Relaxed and sportwear was introduced for the first time. Casual wear was more accepted and hats were worn on the
daily.
The Great Depression 1930’s
With the stock market crash people became more frugal with their money and began to patch their worn dresses instead of buying new ones. The hemline again was at the ground but the silhouettes began to take form to the
women’s body again.
In menswear plaids and stripes became very popular in suits and casual wear.
The G.I Generation 1940’s
America joined in World War 2 in 1941 after
the attack on Pearl Harbor. \Fashion changed dramatically as people in America tried to use as little resources as possible. With the absence of resources
woman began to get more creative. The Victory Roll hairstyle was the that of the 1940’s. Fashion post war was ruled by Christian Dior’s “New
Look.”
The Nifty Fifties
1950’s Full skirts and femininity are a symbol of the 1950’s. Pink was the color of the decade for women in women’s makeup and pale skin was becoming popular
again. France, in ruins after WWII, began to rebuild.
Menswear styles were heavily influenced by musicians such as Elvis Presley, and Johnny Cash. Suits were less structured and polo shirts start to
appear more in the 50’s.
Decade of Discontent 1960’s
Anti-‐ War clothing and peace signs became very popular during the 60’s with the United States in Vietnam for the war. Music industry influenced teenagers and Betsey Johnson’s designs became
popular for women in the late 60’s. Bright colors and art influenced shapes made the silhouettes.
1980’s Punk rock, new wave music and the politics of Ronald Regan influenced the 80’s decade. There was not a predominate style because the trends were constantly changing.
Trend Analysis
Edwardian Edwardian influenced styles can be seen today on screen fashion with shows such as Downtown Abbey and periodic films that are still being made. Edwardian influenced jewelry can be seen in Dolce & Cabbana’s Fall/Winter 2014 Mosaic Collection.
1920’s
The Great Gatsby and Boardwalk Empire are bring the 20s silhouettes back onto the runways as well as into department stores. With how many different collections designers show it is almost impossible to not see some of them influenced by the Roaring 20’s.
1980’s 1980’s fashions such as bright colors and edgy silhouettes can be seen today on the runway and in stores such as forever 21 and H&M. Punk rock fashion shows are a yearly occurrence used by designers such as Balenciaga, and Givenchy.
