NARS x BOURDIN HOLIDAY COLLECTIONEntry #1

François Nars’ Homage to Guy Bourdin W Magazine- November 11, 2013| by Jane Larkworthy

http://www.wmagazine.com/beauty/2013/11/guy-bourdin-nars/

The famous photographer Guy Bourdin is known for his crazy use of make up such as bruiselike eye shadow and bloody looking nail polish. Beauty mogul François Nars says “ Guy was a major inspiration in my life.” and that he would tear his images out of magazines and post them on the wall.” Nars never had the chance to collab with with the legendary photographer, but he has collaborated with the bourdin estate for his new holday collection, creating 17 new shades based on bourdin’s pallete. None of the looks are natural, with bright and electrfried shadows, intense blush hues ranging from intenste magenta to wild orange-red; the nail polish and lipsticks are deeply scarlett. Nars states “This collection is the next big thing.”

Compared to other major cosmetic industries, with their very natural and dull hues, Nars guy bourdin line will bring something new and very bright to the shelves this holiday. I believe this collaboration was a genius idea for nars, because it will bring a new market to his products and boost sales for the company.

H&M Uses Fake Bodies With Real Heads For Models. The Huffington Post- December 5, 2013| By Ellie Krupnick

Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet has revealed that H&M has been sticking real model’s heads on computer-generated bodies. The disconnect between the head and body was first noticed in Norway via Photo Bluff, a site that identifies doctored photos. Photo Bluff has pointed out that H&M’s shots from their lingerie Christmas campaign features fake bodies with real heads. H&M’s press officer has admitted, “it’s not a real body, it is completely virtual and made on the computer. We take pictures of the clothes on a mannequin and then create the human appearance with a computer program. The main point for these doctored photos is because H&M wants shoppers to focus on the clothes. While H&M’s doctored photos may have an affect on women’s body images, I believe this new look for their ads is a great idea. Even though H&M wants to take your focus off the body to look more closely at their products, I find myself looking more at the bodies due to their perfect and some what mannequin appearance.

MOODY BLOOMVogue- September 25, 2013

http://www.vogue.co.uk/fashion/trends/2013-14-autumn-winter/moody-blooms

According to Vogue, “Lush blooms in overripe hues, scattered across blackened silks and chiffons, lend this season’s floral prints a dark, enigmatic glamour.” This trend sets a dark mood for this winter with burnt orange, reds and blacks with dark stained lips, smoky eyes, and long tousled hair.

Floral has been trending for quite some time now, causing it branch out into different categories. This new dark look for floral that started on the runways has captured the attention of numerous fast-fashion retailers, such as Forever 21 and H&M, causing competition in the marketplace.

Fall 2013 Menswear Trend: The Chelsea Boot

Living in a major city like Chicago has exposed me to many fashion trends. Chelsea boots were most certainly trending this fall and are continuing to trend this winter. I have seen the boots everywhere- from men wearing them on the streets, popular men’s clothing stores, and advertisements. Chelsea boots were around last fall, but men were styling them with formal wear. This fall, it was acceptable to pair the boots with any kind of pants, whether it be dress pants or jeans.

Entry #6WGSN Trend Reports based on findings in entry #5.

22

ChevronAccording to WGSN, “Chevrons are a key pattern for fast fashion, working for the womenswear customer seeking edgy daywear and decadent evening pieces.” After researching Chevron on WGSN, I learned the chevron pattern was first used in fashion in the1920’s and has continued to trend since, making it somewhat of a classic. This confirmed to that chevron is a relevant trend because it started rising as a trend again in 2011. I also learned Chevron has been forecasted to trend in bedding in 2015 with a more refined look.

Page 23: Fashion Journal

23

Floral PrintsAccording to WGSN, “Bold floral prints emerge as a directional trend for spring/summer 2014 accessories and apparel, with tropical, multicolor designs driving directional product.” After researching floral prints on WGSN I found that floral prints are trending in womenswear, but floral prints have been cited as a key print direction for menswear this season and that florals are going to be soon on a variety of items from sports caps and clutch bags, to backpacks. It is confirmed that floral prints are trending right now.

Page 24: Fashion Journal

24

ANIMAL SKINAccording to WGSN, animal prints are a key commercial print for womenswear, from catwalks to retail. After researching animal skins on WGSN, I learned that animal skins are always going to be relevant, but only certain prints are trending, such as leopard, lizard, dalmatian, and cheetah skins for winter 2013/14.WGSN has confirmed that the leopard print products sold at Target are currently trending. On the other hand, Zebra is not currently trending in the fashion world, but Target is still selling it, because animal prints are always going to sell in womenswear.

27

Neoprene Look

According to WGSN, bonded fabrics make the neoprene look more wearable but the smooth, bulky texture remains, and it is this characteristic that informs many of the season’s silhouettes of clean lines and exaggerated proportions.

This Butterfly-print neoprene dress by faith connection is made up of 80% Polyamide and 20% Lyrica, the country of origin is not listed.

Brushed Textures

TOPMAN, fall/winter 2013

According to WGSN, blurred and brushed surfaces typify the season’s messages of dimensional texture and color.

This black sweater with mohair from Topman’s fall/winter 2013 line follows the trend of brushed textures. The fiber content of this sweater is 41% Acrylic,29% Nylon,15% Mohair,14% Wool,1% Elastane. The country of origin is not stated.

29

Fluid Velvet According to WGSN, Velvet has already begun to trend at retail level, and here we track it through to another winter season, this one tapping into the mood for soft-touch tactility.

This velvet corset tunic follows this major trend for winter 2013, due to the velvets very flowy movement on the body. This velvet corset tunic is 90% Polyester and 10% Elastane. The country of origin is not listed.

Plaid Knits – China

According to WGSN, Plaid knits are emerging in the Chinese young girl’s market with global and Korean influences, modernizing the classic material with bright tones, textures and simplified designs. I have not seen this trend yet in America, but after looking on a handful of fast-fashion online stores, I believe it’s going to trend.

Page 36: Fashion Journal

36

Androgyny - TokyoAndrogyny was a promininent trend for womenswear autumn/winter 2013 at Tokyo Fashion Week, with masculine tailoring and boyfriend fits. Androgyny was a trend in America in spring/summer 2013. Designers Micheal Kors and Stella McCarntney mixed feminine looks with straight-edged, androgynous cuts for day-to-day wear. I have seen the androgynous look in many retailers such as Topshop and Zara.

Page 37: Fashion Journal

37

50’s Glamour - Shanghai1950’s inspired-looks were seen everywhere during Shanghai’s fashion week. According to WGSN, Designers updated their collections with 50’s glamour, tying into this season’s capsule trend, Flirtatious 50’s. A-line dresses, cocoon cuts, tops with jeweled sleeves, as well as cropped skinny trousers and pencil skirt are key items for this trend. The 50’s theme was also a major trend in America for autumn/winter 2013/2014.Designers such as Burberry, Prada, and D Squared brought the retro 1950s-style to the runways.

39

Topshop/Topman

Topshop on North Michigan Ave. mixed their trendy winter 2013 menswear and womenswear clothing on mannequins with a very subtle christmas/holiday themed display. Topshop’s window displays caught my attention because the building is on a corner and is covered with many Topshop/Topman advertisements. Seeing Topshop’s window displays and advertisements on the building made me realize why the company does not necessarily need to advertise a lot outside of their stores.

Page 40: Fashion Journal

40

Zara

Zara is my favorite clothing retailer, therefor I always find myself looking at the store’s window displays to check in with their current fashions. I love Zara’s window displays because their aesthetic is very chic. Zara does not advertise outside of their stores, making their window displays even more important to the profit of the company. The company does an amazing job with their visual merchandising, because they always switch up their windows with their newest, most fashion forward garments.

Catching Fire - Emerging Trends

ENTRY #10

Page 42: Fashion Journal

42

The Futuristic look

The training suits in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire really stood out because of its futuristic-yet-chic look. Active wear has slowly started to develop a more futuristic look, but these designs have really set a new standard. I believe that people are ready for the future and the creation of more futuristic looking clothing will make people feel like they are actually living in the technologic age.

Page 43: Fashion Journal

43

Eccentric Make Up

The very colorful and avant-garde make up worn by the cast in Catching Fire has inspired many people to step up their make up game, which will soon make eccentric make up a trend. I believe this trend is very likely to happen, because Cover Girl has collaborated with the movie franchise to develop a make up collection reflecting the 12 Districts.

Page 44: Fashion Journal

44

Skinny Leather PantsEven though skinny leather pants were around before the release of Catching Fire, they have become a really big trend due to their popularization from the movie. I believe the skinny leather pants are more of a trend for men, because usually only alternative-styled men used to wear them, but now that the world has seen men wearing them in the movie, it completely changed people’s opinion on men wearing very tight fitting pants. I have noticed a lot of young men wearing very tight leather pants recently.

First View – Donna KarenEntry #11

Donna Karan is an American fashion designer and the creator of the Donna Karan New York and DKNY clothing labels. Like always, Donna Karan brought beauty to her pre-fall collection with simplicity. It seems like Karan designed this line to make life simpler, and more straightforward. I believe retailers like Nordstrom, Saks, and Neiman Marcus would sell Donna Karan’s clothing. I love this look on the left, due to the very androgynous slouched-yet-fitted blazer and the contrasting white blouse.

Fashion Don’tsEntry #13

Page 51: Fashion Journal

51

Crocs

Crocs are a fashion don’t simply because they are an ugly rubber shoe that was created for comfort. The design of crocs are not aesthetically pleasing and they do not compliment any outfit.

Page 52: Fashion Journal

52

Wearing leggings as pants

Wearing leggings as pants is a huge fashion don’t, simply because people can see too much of you, which is not a good look. At least wear an over-sized tee.

Page 53: Fashion Journal

53

Matching your make up with your clothes.

NEVER match your make up with your clothes, this trend died in the 80s. Instead, apply natural or complimenting colors to your clothing.

Page 54: Fashion Journal

54

Popping your collar

No matter how cool you think you are- never pop your collar, this trend died in the early 90s.

Stylist

I believe being a stylist would be the best fit for me, because I have great communication skills and putting together outfits on other people has always been easy for me. It is necessary to have good communication skills, because I will need to be able to communicate with my clients to ensure I am styling them the way they want to be styled.

Page 57: Fashion Journal

57

Fashion Merchandiser

I believe working as a fashion merchandiser would be a good career for me, because fashion merchandising is where business and style unite. I have my own personal taste and understanding of fashion, but I also have some business experience.

Free-lance make up artistMy dream job would be working back stage at New York Fashion Week as a make up artist. This job would be perfect for me, because I love doing make up and I would be able to make many connections through the fashion industry.
