community serviceletters of recommendation
community service
community involvement is a great source of work samples—often overlooked
shows that you are “well-rounded”
•if service samples relate to one of your skill areas—put sample there•if service doesn’t relate—create separate section
community service
examples:•poster & picture of the “Brotherhood Tree of Giving” you designed for the lobby of a hotel•grant proposal you helped create for day-care facility•flyer you created for the June mailing•picture of your team building a house•photo of you working in a soup kitchen•menu you developed for PTA dinner•menu and production plan for a catered dinner for 80
letters of recommendation
from employers, instructors, supervisors, owners, presidents, guests etc…should be from people that know you & your work personally
provide additional proof of your abilities and personal references from people who have seen you perform
may have to rely more on letters of recommendation if you are lacking work samples
letters of recommendation
If you don’t like the person you are asking for a letter, chances are they don’t like you either—NOT A GREAT CHOICE
asking for a letter:•request letter in writing WELL BEFORE it is needed•request should help guide the person writing the letter—help them to focus on particular skills/ areas of personality that you want addressed•ask for the letter while you are close to the event or still in contact with the person•allow 2-3 weeks for receiving the letter—it is appropriate to follow up your request with a reminder
letters of recommendation
when writing your request:•start with courtesy and manners•tell person purpose of letter•give them list of traits, skills or attributes you want addressed
•leadership•ability to work in groups•ability to self-motivate•ability to meet guests needs•ability to complete work•ability to supervise•management skills•creativity•people skills
letters of recommendation
most people write lousy letters of recommendation—too general or generic
give them the most help that you can!
