FAQ for submitting TDG project proposals

Q: Is there any theme for this call for proposals?A: There is no specific theme for this call for proposals. Nevertheless, as experiential learning is strongly

advocated in the University, proposals, which incorporate experiential learning into credit-bearing undergraduate courses/projects with clearly aligned intended learning outcomes constituting to the curricula, are particularly welcome for this call.

Q: Can I request funding for buying equipment, like computers and tablets?A: Laboratory equipment and permanent equipment for Schools/Departments, such as computers will

not be funded.

Q: I plan to attend a conference to present my project by the end of the project period. May I request funding for the related cost?

A: Expenses related to attending conference are not supported. However as project teams are always encouraged to disseminate their projects, you may further discuss the dissemination and resources needed with the funding committee that may suggest other funding sources or alternatives.

Q: I have missed the submission deadline for the preliminary proposals. Can I go straight ahead to submit the final proposal?

A: The purpose for submitting a preliminary proposal is to help shape up your project ideas. After receiving your preliminary proposal, CEI staff will contact you to discuss your project ideas; and only those final proposals that includes mutually agreed refinements would be accepted.

Q: Are there any references, like previous TDG projects and information about different teaching approaches?

A: You may visit the website for TDG project, http://cei.ust.hk/teaching-development-grant-tdg-projects, which provides you a list of ongoing and previous TDG projects as well as all necessary information about this call for proposals.

Q: I’m interested in submitting an experiential learning project proposal. Are there any tips for structuring the project ideas?

A: You’re strongly encouraged to structure your project ideas according to the experiential learning cycle (http://www.learningandteaching.info/learning/experience.htm). For an example of experien-tial learning project proposals, you may visit http://cei.ust.hk/files/private/tdg-projects/sample_pro-ject_proposal.pdf.

Q: Do I have to present my proposals to the funding committee?A: Yes, you will be invited to clarify your project ideas in the Teaching Development Grant Funding

Committee Meeting.

Call for proposals for Teaching Development Grant (TDG) projects is now open. CEI would like to invite faculty and teaching staff to propose projects that aim at delivering original and innovative teaching ideas related to experiential learning and other teaching development that enhances teaching and learning.

Are you looking for an opportunity to enrich your teaching?Are you planning to integrate experiential learning component in your course?Are you implementing any innovative ideas to enhance student learning?

The newly developed assessment tools help students to reflect and evaluate themselves and peers in an experiential learning project – HKUST Robotics Team

which benefits students indeed. Here are the feedback from the

participated students:

“I used to think that designing robots was just for fun and

for the competitions. Now I can see that engineering was not only (for) boosting machine performance but

could also really make a difference in society.”

“I enjoy doing something that we like. It is where our passion lies. Working with

a bunch of kids who share the same interest in robotics design is quite fun.”

One would never learn something until you put

the knowledge into practice, use it and then master it. The science of cooking

demands the same; through the hands on

exercise and group work, our students are having fun

practicing, seeing, smelling and tasting their own results.

We were able to conclude that the devices

can enhance motivation and interactivity within the classroom.

These findings are encouraging and inform us on how to

design a framework for best-practices, helping us plan for future use of the devices in other courses.

The idea of this ‘IGNITE Study’ came from my belief on engineering

education, “Incubation of Greatness, Networking (channels), Innovations,

Technology and Entrepreneurship”. In the study, the cornerstone of the

project was laid with students’ imagination. Since calling always

weights much more than teacher’s instructions, students achieved successfully that their

invention has turned into an entrepreneurial spin-off by the end.

Key Assessment CriteriaOutcome-based: Embeds the design and delivery of outcome-based teaching and learning

Evidence-based: Provides a clear and systematic evaluation plan to demonstrate evidence of attainment of project objectives, which may include generic and subject specific baseline measurements for pre- and post-implementation comparison

Wide applicability: Impacts a large number of students with potential continuation in other courses and programs

Feasibility: Provides a realistic scope for the deliverables, budget, resources, time frame and milestones

Collaboration: Involves collaboration with peers within and across Departments and Schools

Application Procedures1. Download the project proposal template at

tdg-call-proposals. It will guide you to complete your proposal with the key information needed.

2. Preliminary proposal: Email to ceitdp@ust.hk no later than 6 Feb 2017. Upon receiving your application, we will contact you to discuss your ideas and to provide advice to shape the proposal up.

3. Final proposal: Email to ceitdp@ust.hk no later than 10 Mar 2017. After the softcopy has been accepted by CEI.

4. Endorsed hardcopy: Mail to CEI's main office at Room 6592 c/o Beatrice Chu after the softcopy has been accepted by CEI.

5. Funding Committee Meeting: Clarify your project ideas in the Teaching Development Grant Funding Committee Meeting in mid Apr 2017.
