Family Vision JANUARY TO JUNE 2011 REPORT  

Family Vision is an organization devoted to ‘building a caring culture’ through education and training seminars, innovative social initiatives, and life‐changing personal growth programmes.   Our goals are:  ‐‐ To help people live happy, productive and meaningful lives ‐‐ To alleviate pain and suffering   ‐‐ To improve the quality of life of those in need.  www.familyvision.info 

 

The first few months of 2011 have probably been the busiest we have had in living memory! To make a long story short, we were able to do… 

1. Parenting workshops for 7000 parents at 12 cities in 6 states across India  2. Leadership Training programmes for senior school students in Delhi  3. A project called “Behtar Bachpan – Behtar Jeevan” for underprivileged children which has so 

far touched the lives of 132 rural girl students and 125 slum school children 4. Training programme for 50 teachers from 50 villages in Rajasthan 

 

Parenting Workshops Parents play a critical but largely unseen role in society. The way they bring up their children today will have a huge impact on the India of tomorrow. One of our goals is provide parents with the input, tools and training that they need to do a good job of building a better future.  

In our workshops, we encourage parents to spend more time with their kids, understand them better, learn to listen more to them, use positive reinforcement and appreciation in order to bring out the best in them and be a positive role model by ‘walking the talk’ themselves. 

Between January and April 2011, Family Vision conducted workshops for a total of 7000 parents in the following cities:  

Barnala, Hoshaipur, Patiala, Agra, Muzaffarpur & Begusarai (Bihar), Karnal, Panipat, Indore, Ahmadnagar & Satara (Maharashtra) & Bhuvaneshwar   

 

 

 

 

    Here is a little report from our workshop team about one of our events… 

 Hello and greetings from the Family Vision road team! Begusarai is an interesting town. Located in eastern Bihar close to the Ganga, it is home to the Barauni oil refinery. It is, sadly, also the place of origin of many crime dons and it is not an uncommon sight to see people walking around with ‘kattas’ (country made revolvers) in broad daylight. It is what you might call ‘dabangg’ country.  On the 26th of February, we conducted a workshop on positive parenting for 400 parents in Begusarai. To be 

honest, we weren’t exactly jumping for joy at the thought of doing a workshop there. As we crossed the Ganga and drove into Begusarai, one of our fellow passengers cheerfully told us, “Many of the parents will carry guns to your workshop. It’s quite normal.”  Besides being somewhat concerned about our safety, we also began wondering whether it would even make sense to talk about concepts like self‐esteem, gentleness, communication and motivation. Well, we discovered that these concepts were even more relevant there. It was beautiful to see the parents’ complete participation in our workshop! It was as if many of them had heard some things for the first time. ‐ Concepts like taking the time to understand your children, listening to them, not putting put negative labels on them and appreciating them.  They listened in pin‐drop silence as we talked about the need to motivate children instead of beating them into submission. They participated enthusiastically in the activities we conducted, they laughed at our skits, they sang along with our songs and by the end of the workshop, we had the assurance that we had connected in a deep and meaningful way.  I realized that the heart of parents is the same everywhere. ‐ Bombay or Begusarai, every parent wants the best for their children and perhaps one of the best ways to really bring about a lasting change in the way a society thinks is to motivate and educate its parents.  It is our hope and prayer that the effects of the event will ripple out far and wide and touch the lives of many children in that town and improve the quality of their lives.  

Training Tomorrow’s Leaders The India of tomorrow will be what the teenagers of today grow up to make it. We are committed to providing them with the tools and training that they need to be a force for good in society. To this end, we have created a series of high impact workshops called, “The True Leader”– leadership defined as the ability to: – Do what needs to be done without being told to do it (a.k.a. ‘initiative’) – Bring out the best in others – Be a ‘giver’ and not just a ‘taker’ – Be a team player 

We conducted these workshops for the students for a total of 110 high school students in Vasant Valley School and New Era Public schools.

Behtar Bachpan…Behtar Jeevan  

 “Behtar Bachpan ... Behtar Jeevan” is an umbrella project by Family Vision which aims to improve the lives of 1000 children from socially/economically disadvantaged backgrounds in 2011‐2012 by providing them with much‐needed educational, material, emotional, medical and community support.  Helping the Girl Child  

Barely 20 kilometers from the heart of hip and happening metropolitan Gurgaon lies its rural cousin, Teekli ‐ a quiet and very unassuming village.  Teekli has a primary girls’ school with 132 girls between the ages of 3 and 10. These children come from families that live below the poverty line. For them, a notebook, a pencil and a new pair of clothes are luxury items!   Through the generosity of kind people, Family 

Vision was able to kickstart academic year 2011‐2012 by providing each of these children with a years’ supply of notebooks! None of these girls had shoes, only chappals with completely worn out soles! So we took their measurements and gave each of the 132 girls a brand new pair of shoes! The children were overjoyed!  

  

Helping Slum Children  Through the kindness of concerned individuals and companies, Family Vision also provided 120 slum school children in Mehrauli with sports equipment and a brand new set of clothes each. The kids also enjoyed a special lunch at this event (including ice cream and chocolates)  

  

   

 

Teacher Training Programme for Adivasi Teachers 

Family Vision conducted workshop called "The 5 Traits of a Good Teacher" for teachers from 50 Adivasi (tribal) village schools in Rajasthan. It is our hope and prayer that the effects of this workshop will touch the lives of thousands of Adivasi children in a positive and powerful way.
