Finding and choosing holiday childcareHoliday care provided through a local authority is often cheaper than private or voluntary provision. However, some local authorities struggle to meet the demand for holiday care for families, particularly for disabled children over the age of 12. You should check early with your local Family Information Service (FIS) for information about the availability of holiday care in your area as spaces fill up quickly! • Family/friends. Many parents rely on this type of support to provide care during the holidays, but remember you will not be able to claim financial help for the costs of this type of informal childcare

Paying for holiday childcareWhile some schools and local authorities may offer free clubs and activities, many families will have to pay for childcare, so it is important to check that you are claiming any help you are entitled to. According to Daycare Trust’, average holiday care costs range from £58.89 to £119.32 per week, per child. Make sure your childcare provider is registered.

As with childcare during term time, you can only receive help with your holiday childcare costs if you use registered childcare. Out-of-school clubs, holiday play schemes, extended schools and some nannies may be registered providers. However, if they care for children under the age of eight they will have to be registered. Nannies, as well as providers that only care for children aged eight and over, can opt to join on the Ofsted voluntary register so make sure to check with your provider to find out if they have opted to do this.

Working Tax CreditIf you use registered childcare during the school holidays, you may be eligible for help with your childcare costs through the childcare element of Working Tax Credit. When you start paying childcare costs, or up to one week before you start paying costs, you need to contact the Tax Credit Helpline to inform them of what your average weekly childcare costs will be and for what period. If you are eligible for help you will also need to contact the helpline when you stop paying for your childcare. You must do this to avoid an overpayment. Contact the Tax Credit Helpline on 0845 300 3900.

If you use childcare throughout the year as well as during the holidays, your tax credit award will be based on your average weekly costs. When you make a claim for the childcare element of Working Tax Credit, you will need to include any holiday costs that you estimate you will be charged. This will be included in your normal tax credit payment.

Childcare VouchersIf your employer offers childcare vouchers, these too can be used to pay for any registered holiday childcare that you use. And you can save these up, so the cost of holiday childcare is spread throughout the year.

Introducing your baby to the pool before your holiday is a great way to give them the confidence to take the plunge when you get to your destination. Water Babies swimming classes are a fantastic way to begin to build that water confidence in your baby. Not only that, they can start to develop skills that could potentially save their lives one day.

Tragically drowning remains the third most common cause of accidental death in children under 5. In fact, a recent study revealed that more under 5’s know how to play a computer game than know how to swim – so it is vital to get your little one in the pool as soon as you can.

‘We teach our babies that if you fall into the pool, you need to kick up to the surface and hold on’ says Heidi Hunter-Cope who runs Water Babies in the area. ‘Our babies are often able to hold on to the side of the pool by age four or five months! The best thing of all is that most of the time babies and parents are having so much fun they don’t realise that they are learning anything!’

If you are planning to go away this summer, then here are a few things to bear in mind: Stay warm! Although the air temperature abroad can be lovely and

warm, pools are often unheated and so may be chillier than you expect. It’s definitely worth getting a wetsuit for your little one - especially if you want to play in the sea with them, which will definitely be cooler than they are used to.

Stay afloat! For peace of mind, it may be worth investing in something that your little one can wear around the pool and can swim with. Float jackets are fantastic for toddlers – they are comfortable to wear and enable your children to use their arms and legs when swimming in the pool.

Be aware! There are stringent regulations that pool operators have to follow in the UK and this isn’t always the same abroad. Watch out for slippery floors, sharp edges and broken tiles.

‘If you get the swimming bug, you may decide that lessons are for you when you come home. At Water Babies our fantastic teachers are at the heart of our business. Mostly ex Water Babies mums themselves, they have changed career and spent a huge amount of time training to be the best qualified baby swimming teachers around. In fact it takes longer to train to be a Water Babies instructor than it does to get a private pilot’s license! The fact our teachers are mums means that they really empathise with our clients and understand how they are feeling’.

‘Many of our children are swimming by around two and a half years which really is incredible to see. In the last two years alone, we’ve known five of our little Water Babies save themselves from the tragedy of drowning. This is one of the reasons why we’ve won multiple national awards for our programme.’

Pyjama Drama provides drama and creative play classes for babies, toddlers and children up to seven years old. Pretending, role-play, singing and playing, all come naturally to children and these unique classes are not only lots and lots of fun but also develop key social skills

Originally created by a former drama teacher, the entire programme is linked to the national curriculum and there are over 90 original songs, specifically written to complement the sessions. Anna, who has been running these popular classes in Shrewsbury and Oswestry for over two years is launching new classes for babies from six months, as even children this young can enjoy and benefit from drama games and creative play. FANTASY KIDS CLUBS - SUMMER FAIRY & HERO CAMP

Children across Shropshire will be delighted to hear that Yorkshire’s famous Summer Fairy & Hero Camp is returning to the county this summer. Former performing arts pupil from Shrewsbury College of Arts and Technology is this summer bringing her own brand of magic back to Shrewsbury.

The highly popular Fairy and Hero camps are a new concept of holiday workshops being held around Britain. Director and creator of the Fantasy Kids Clubs, Suzanne Kaye-Vaughan explained: “The camps allow children to learn about their favourite characters and develop skills in singing, dance, drama, crafts and sports. “It is sometimes hard to find fun and educational activities for children to do during the holidays, especially for children as young as three or four years old. “Each five-day workshop is designed to be a week full of magical fun for the children attending. It runs from 9am-3pm daily and finishes with a graduation show for family and friends to attend. “Our workshops have been such a big hit with the children and parents – we have even had children travelling from London, Holland and Germany to attend workshops in Yorkshire.

In 2005 Suzanne started her own children’s entertainment company Make a Wish Entertainment, which is based in Yorkshire. It specialises in producing magical fairytale events for children suitable for private parties, christenings, weddings, corporate events and holiday workshops. Suzanne started life in this company as ‘Fairy Enchantica’ hosting entertainment that children could participate in through role play. She now has a list of over 100 characters to choose from, hires professional actors and character entertainers to play the roles and has entertained thousands of children every year, including the children of some major celebrity clients.

With such success in Yorkshire, last year Suzanne decided to bring her Fairy & Hero Camp nearer to her family home.“Since starting in 2005 I have had many requests from clients and friends asking for more events in the Shropshire area,” said Suzanne.“The camps were so well received in Shrewsbury last year that here at Fairy & Hero HQ we’re getting very excited about returning again this Summer.”

The 2011 Shropshire-based Summer Fairy & Hero Camp will be held at the Shrewsbury Girls High School, Town Walls department from the 1st to the 5th August. With a car park for ease of access, excellent facilities and the convenient town centre location, you can ensure that your little ones holiday experience suits your working and/or social plans too. BRIDGNORTH CHILDREN’S FESTIVAL RE-LAUNCHES FOR 2011

The Bridgnorth Children’s Festival is back in 2011 with a brand new look as this popular event is re-launched.

This year the Children’s Festival will be linking up with the Bridgnorth Music & Arts Festival and the Bridgnorth Food Fair and will be holding a one-day event on Sunday 28th August (August Bank Holiday Sunday) in various venues in and around Bridgnorth High Street and the surrounding area.

Based around its popular Activity Zones there will be a great deal for children and families to do and see. Although not all the activities have been finalised yet it’s hoped that the Festival will include:• Fun Zone: around St. Leonard’s Close and the High Street with large scale inflatables and bouncy castles; climbing wall and other attractions + the all important Refreshment area

• Sports Zone: based at the Leisure Centre with afternoon fun swimming sessions from 1:00-4:00pm; marital arts; table tennis and other activities

• Arts Zone: at Castle Hall with art and craft, pottery and other workshops + Whack It-Smack It junk music workshop and hands-on animal experiences

• Under 5’s Zone: based at Bridgnorth Baptist Church with a range of activities for the younger members of the familyIn addition there will be roaming storytellers, magicians, circus performers and celebrity appearances by none other than Bart Simpson who was chosen following a survey of local schoolchildren as the character they would most like to see at the Festival.

The various Zones will be linked by an Activities Trail and families will be able to purchase wrist bands to gain entry. The full Festival Wrist Band will cost £5 for the first child in a family and £3 for subsequent children and allows access to all the Zones. Alternatively entry to a single Zone costs just £2 per child. Some larger scale activities such as the climbing wall will cost extra but all prices have been kept the minimum possible.

Cycling with your Children by Emma Bullard

Children love riding their bikes so do remember to take them out and give them the necessary encouragement and opportunity to ride.

Most primary schools now have secure cycle parking and take part in Bikeability cycle training programmes. This is the modern day version of the Cycling Proficiency Test and provides basic skills required for riding on roads with moderate traffic. Do enable your children to take up this important training.

Top tips

1. Learning to ride: consider getting them a balance bike to learn to ride on, rather than one with stabilisers. (You can make a balance bike by taking the pedals off!)

2. Make sure their bike is not too big for them; make sure they can reach their brake levers and that the levers aren’t too stiff for them to use. Some children’s bikes can be really heavy and difficult to ride so try to avoid these.

3. When you’re riding with young children on the road, the adult should be close behind and slightly further out from the kerb. You need to be able to see what your child is doing; and also you need to make sure car drivers see you.

4. Helmets are recommended but are useless if not fitted properly. http://cyclinginfo.co.uk/blog/clothes/how-to-fit-a-helmet/ has photos of the wrong way and the right way.

What to do and where to go

1. Shrewsbury Sports Village: the cycle track is free for family use on the last Sunday of every month from 10am-12.00

2. National Cycle Route 45 from Coalbrookdale to Bridgnorth: a recently-opened traffic-free section of the Mercian Way which runs from Chester to Salisbury.

3. Cycle Shrewsbury family-friendly rides series including a tour of Shrewsbury Town’s footballing history and a Wildlife and Waterways ride – each is about 7 miles (optional shorter routes) and mostly on quiet roads and traffic-free paths.

4. More cycle rides suitable for the family across Shropshire can be found at http://www.shropshirecycling.co.uk/cycleselector.htm

For parents/carers

If your cycling skills are a bit rusty, there are informal social rides in Shrewsbury for people who haven’t cycled for a while and would like to get their confidence back:• First Sunday in the month 10.30am from Porthill bridge. Women only• Tuesdays from 7 June starting from Sutton: dates/times tbc but will be

during school hours. Open to all.

Get some cycle training yourself; if there is Bikeability training coming up in your child’s school why not ask if the children can train their parents (under supervision!) at the end of the school day? DIANA GRIFFITHS SCHOOL OF DANCE

Classical Greek Dance is a beautiful barefooted dance technique based on the aims and ideals of ancient Greece: the necessity of the balance and harmony of the body, mind and spirit. Founded by Ruby Ginner in 1923, it became affiliated to the I.S.T.D. in the 1950s.

Classical Greek Dance is introduced to very young children, and continues into adulthood; each age, stage and ability of the student is carefully met and graded accordingly. For the very young it develops early co-ordination skills, creativity, and a sense of rhythm, thus developing the child’s confidence and self-esteem. A greater degree of balance, control of movement and relaxation is learned as the student progresses, as well as a variety of dance movements, a sense of line, and a deeper understanding of interpretation of music.

The advanced work opens up greater study of the arts, literature and mythology, and allows the student to experience different aspects of the dance technique: lyrical, pyrrhic, choric, ritual and tragic. Drama is closely linked with Classical Greek Dance, enhancing the dramaticexpression needed in the dance form.

Classical Greek Dance is an effective, dramatic visual art form, developing the student’s confidence, musicality, balance, poise and love of dance.

“Dance Expressions” is a fun, creative, imaginative and musical dance experience for under fives. Children are encouraged to develop their musicality and sense of rhythm by the use of a variety of percussion instruments and musical styles. Co-ordination skills and dance movements are introduced through shapes and patterns, with strong emphasis being placed on make-believe and storytelling.

Catherine Griffiths, a mother of two children (thirteen and nine years), has been teaching Classical Greek Dance for over 25 years. Originally taught by her mother, the late Diana Griffiths, she continued her dance teacher training at Guildford School of Acting and Dance Drama Education. Her teaching has always been closely linked with all aspects of early years education, and since gaining an N.N.E.B. at Norland College, and later being awarded a Montessori Diploma, she has successfully combined these two aspects of her career. She is principal of her own dancing school (the Diana Griffiths School of Dance) as well as currently working part-time in a Montessori pre-school setting.

Catherine is a Fellow of I.S.T.D., holds a Certificate in Dance Education and is an approved tutor for I.S.T.D. She holds weekly Classical Greek Dance classes and workshops for all ages throughout Shropshire and regularly enters students into I.S.T.D. examinations.
