HONEY BROOK FOOD PANTRY MEETS THE GROWING NEEDS OF THE COMMUNITY
Honey Brook Food Pantry continues into their fourth year, consistently serving nearly750 people each month. Over 75 NEW families received assistance over the summer
alone. The Food Pantry distributed over 350 supplemental food boxes to children in needduring the summer months. The Children’s Backpack program will commence again in lateSeptember with approximately 70 children receiving weekend food assistance. In theircontinual effort to promote food independence, the Pantry began a food growing programwhere 16 families in three local mobile home communities began growing their ownvegetables over the summer. Assisting members of the community in finding employmenthas also become a goal of the Honey Brook Food Pantry. They have been receivingemployment postings and hope to fulfill their mission of food independence by sharing jobopportunities with people seeking employment. The Honey Brook Food Pantry has thusfar been operating out of a space which afforded them a rental subsidy. That subsidy hasended, so moving forward the Pantry will be responsible for the full cost of rent and will beencouraging monthly donations to cover increased rental costs and the purchase of nutritional food.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT
The winter months are here and inclement weather is inevitable. Please remember to move cars off of Borough streets when asnow emergency is declared. A snow emergency is declared when there are 3 or more inches of snow. The street crew attempts
to clear all streets to the curb line during snow removal and that process is difficult when cars are parked on the street. Residentsshould clear sidewalks of snow within 24 hours. Please do not shovel, throw or plow snow from your sidewalks or driveways into
the street. The plow cannot be lifted at every driveway so please clear your driveway after the plow has passed. Residentsshould us a chemical ice melting product rather than salt to preserve their sidewalks. Salt is corrosive and will causedamage. Please keep in mind that the streets are cleared in order of traffic priority, main roads first, then secondaryroads.
RESIDENTS WHO HAVE A FIRE HYDRANT LOCATED ON THEIR SIDEWALK SHOULD SHOVEL SNOW FROM AROUND THEHYDRANT. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WILL WASTE CRITICAL TIME CLEARING THE HYDRANT IN THE EVENT OF A FIRE.
YARD WASTE COLLECTION ENDS NOVEMBER 16 AND WILL RESUME APRIL 19, 2017
YOUR PROPERTY AND BOROUGH ROADS
DO YOU KNOW THAT THE WIDTH OF borough roads inmost all cases does not stop at the edge of the road pavement
or even the edge of a roadside storm water ditch or curb that maybe along your property? Also, even though you are required tomaintain this area, it is part of the Borough’s “Right of Way” andyou are not permitted to put anything in that area except yourmailbox without the Borough’s written permission. If you want to plant trees or shrubbery, install a fence, construct
a retaining wall (permit required) or make other improvements onyour property a good rule of thumb is to stay back at least five feetfrom the edge of any ditch, or absent of a ditch, the edge of thepaved road or curb before making your improvement. If you placeanything in the “Right of Way” you may be required to remove it atyour expense. In addition to the above mentioned improvements, you are also not permitted to place other items in the road “Right
of Way” including portable basketball standards or goals, rocks, grass clippings, etc. Please keep trash cans and recycle bins behindcurb, especially in snow events. The borough is not responsible to reimburse residents for any
items in the “Right of Way” including mailboxes that are damagedas a result of road maintenance or improvement activities. Ensuringthe mailbox lid is no further than the back side of the curb will helpto minimize damage. Under no circumstances are residents permitted to direct any
water into a Borough ditch or storm drain or onto a road surfacewhether it is storm water or the discharge of water from pools, sump pumps or another facility without the Borough’s writtenpermission. Questions concerning the above information shouldbe directed to Bill Ford, Public Works Director, [email protected].
Winter HolidaySafety
Winter holidays are a time for families and friends to get together. But that also means a greater risk for fire.Following a few simple tips will ensure a happy and fire-safe holiday season.
HOLIDAY DECORATING7 Be careful with holiday decorations. Choose decorations that are flame resistant or flame retardant.7 Keep lit candles away from decorations and other things that can burn.7 Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use, but not both.7 Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Connect no morethan three strands of mini lights sets and a maximum of 50 bulbs for screw-in bulbs. Readmanufacturer’s instructions for number of LED strands to connect.
7 Use clips, not nails, to hang lights so the cords do not get damaged.7 Keep decorations away from windows and doors
HOLIDAY ENTERTAINING7 Test your smoke alarms and tell guests about your home fire escape plan. 7 Keep children and pets away from lit candles.7 Keep matches and lighters up high in a locked cabinet.7 Stay in the kitchen when cooking on the stovetop.7 Ask smokers to smoke outside. Remind smokers to keep their smoking materials with them soyoung children do not touch them.
7 Provide large, deep ashtrays for smokers. Wet cigarette butts with water before discarding.
Before Heading Outor to BedBlow out lit candles when you leaveor go to bed. Turn off all light stringsand decorations before leaving homeor going to bed.
FACTSTwo of every five homedecoration fires are startedby candles.Nearly half of holidaydecoration fires happenbecause decorations areplaced too close to a heatsource.
