CCM Students Selected for Honors ScholarshipCCM students Claudia Saavedra of Hopatcong, and Justin Stone of Mount Olive, are two of only 20 students selected from an interna-tional group of applicants to re-ceive the Honors Living-Learning Community Scholarship at Rut-gers-Newark.

“This is an extraordinary oppor-tunity for us to continue to get a great education while receiving fi-nancial help,” Claudia said.

While at CCM, she was a recipient of the Anthony Starace Scholar-ship, the CCM Minority EOF In-centive Scholarship and EOF Trans-

fer Award for the 2015-2016 year.

Both Claudia and Justin credit CCM with doing “an excellent job” preparing them to receive such a selective honor. “The pro-fessors are constantly training you on not just how to succeed in the classroom, but how to get into your field of study,” Justin said. “They train you on how to handle an interview, how to meet people, how to write a resume. They are preparing you for finding a job.”

The Living-Learning Scholarship is a unique program that selects a small group of students based on

their ability to interact with and contribute to a community.

During her senior year of high school, Claudia, a public administration major at CCM, created a series of workshops for first-generation and underprivileged high school students in which she guided them through the college admis-sion process.

Justin, a business administration major, is an Eagle Scout who helped beautify a section of Mount Olive Town Hall by replanting low main-

tenance plants and bushes. He was also the president of Venture Crew 156 in Flanders and a member of CCM’s business honor society.

Meet CCM’s New PresidentDr. Anthony J. Iacono, an accomplished ad-ministrator with more than 20 years’ experi-ence in higher educa-tion and community colleges, has begun his term as CCM’s third president. He succeeds Dr. Edward J. Yaw who

retired in August after 30 years as president.

Iacono, who is a community college graduate, was vice president of Academic Affairs at Indi-an River State College in Fort Pierce, FL.

“I am deeply honored to have been selected as

the next president of County College of Morris and I greatly appreciate the confidence that the search committee and the Board of Trustees have entrusted in me,” said Iacono. “As an ed-ucator, my greatest focus is student success and CCM is well positioned to support its students today and for generations to come.”

Iacono spent 17 years at Indian River Commu-nity College, having also held the positions of associate dean for Developmental Education and full-time professor of history. His accom-plishments include serving as a core member of the team that helped Indian River earn rec-ognition by the Aspen Award Committee as one of the top 10 community colleges in the nation based on exceptional student success;

leading a team of faculty, administrators and staff in supporting the college for admission into the Achieving the Dream network; and supporting faculty in the creation of the In-stitute for Academic Excellence, an innovative research and professional development center.

Iacono received his Ph.D. in American history from Mississippi State University, his M.A. and B.A. in American history from the University of Central Florida and his Associate in Arts from Indian River Community College.

The selection of Iacono concluded a seven-month search conducted by CCM trustees and represen-tatives from the college’s unions, administration, student body and the CCM Foundation.

Foundation Gala Honors Dr. Yaw, AlumniThis year’s CCM Foundation gala afforded the opportunity to honor Dr. Edward J. Yaw for his 30 years as president with the foundation’s an-nual Leadership Award. And there was an additional surprise – Foundation President Joseph Vitale announced during the ceremony that the Foun-dation board had voted unanimously to change the name of the honor to the Edward J. Yaw Leadership Award.

“This was our chance to acknowledge and thank Dr. Yaw for the impact he has had – not only on CCM – but on Morris County and higher education in New Jersey for the three decades,” said William McElroy, chairman of the college’s Foundation. “He has been an admired leader of our state’s college community and his inspired steward-ship has helped to build CCM into the outstanding institution it is today.”

The gala, which saw a record-break-ing 260 attendees, raised net proceeds of nearly $90,000 for scholarships and programs.

In addition to honoring Yaw, the Foundation also recognized four graduates with its annual Alumni Awards: Michael D. Klinger ’03, of Jersey City, an associate in the capital markets group of Cadwalader, Wick-ersham & Taft LLP (Alumnus of the Year); Holly M. Lusardi ’07, of Par-sippany, a software designer for the Department of Defense at Picatinny Arsenal (Alumni Achievement); Ma-ria N. DeAngelis ’09, of Cedar Knolls, a teacher of special education mathe-matics at Bogota High School (Alum-ni Service); and Matthew W. Roche ’03, of Green Village, a post-doctorate fellow in the division of schizophre-nia research at Rutgers University (Alumni Humanitarian).

The event’s honorary chair was Paul Boudreau, president of the Morris County Chamber of Commerce. In addition to music by Big City Swing, CCM’s performing arts students pre-sented selections from the college’s spring musical, “The Pajama Game.”

Siemens supports CCM: Jerome Hagedorn (left), site head, and Carroll Scribner, director of Human Resources at Siemens, join CCM Foundation President Joseph Vitale at the company’s headquarters in Flanders, where they presented Vitale a check for $3,000 to support the 2016 Women Who Dare conference at CCM. The event, held annually in May for 22 years, brings together hundreds of northern New Jersey high school girls and CCM instructors to introduce them to careers in the sciences. This year, Siemens’ Director of Strategy and Business Development, Dr. Kimberley Davies, was keynote speaker.

Meet Our StudentsA Dream Renewed at CCM, Deborah Budney ‘18, Nursing

When Deborah Budney was growing up in Parsippany, nursing was already her pas-sion. “When I was in high school, I worked in the nurse’s office and I volunteered at the hospital,” she says. “It’s in my nature to help people.”

What she didn’t anticipate was how many life events would delay her from pursu-ing nursing. She held three jobs to work her way through a less-expensive alternative – a certificate from an art school. After gradua-tion, she started her own advertising agency and eventually saved the funds necessary to attend Centenary College.

“I started school at 30 and thought I was too old,” she says. She attended college for three semesters, then was forced to discontinue due to childbirth complications that left her temporarily bedridden. Then her father de-veloped cancer and she assumed the role of caregiver for five years until his death in 2013.

The following year, she decided it was final-ly time to apply to nursing school. “I was fortunate that CCM accepted almost all of

those credits from Centena-ry,” she says. She was award-ed the CCM Foundation General Scholarship in her first semester and it has been renewed every semester since. “The scholarship allowed me to focus on my classwork instead of worrying about fi-nances,” she says.

Budney expects to graduate from the Nursing Program in 2018. She will be following her son into the field. He graduated from CCM in 2009 and works as a nurse in San Antonio, Texas.

“Returning to college allowed me to finish what I started so many years ago,” she reflects. “This is my opportunity to finally achieve my goal of earning an RN degree and eventually being accepted into a BSN program.”

She hopes to work as a hospital oncology nurse. “I like being able to help people. I think it’s where I could do the most good.”

To help other students like Deborah achieve their dreams through our scholarship pro-gram, contact the Foundation at 973-328-5060 or [email protected]

New Music Building Named for Dr. YawCCM now has its second building named for a former president. The Learning Re-source Center (library) car-ries the name of the college’s first president, Dr. Sherman H. Masten. On April 21, the new Music Technology Cen-ter was named in honor of the second president, Dr. Edward J. Yaw, who retired August 31.

“As someone with a deep passion for music and the p e r f o r m i n g arts, the dedication of the Music Technology Cen-ter in my name is particularly meaningful,” said Yaw. “I am deeply honored that this wonderful facility has been selected to recognize my time here, which has been profoundly rewarding.”

Dr. Yaw also pointed out that his late father was a musician and a long-time professor of music as well.

The dedication was marked by the unveiling of a portrait of Yaw that will hang in the building’s first-floor. As part of the ceremony, economics professor Dr. Stephen Kaifa presented a plaque on behalf of the faculty noting Yaw’s many achievements.

The two-story, 22,500-square-foot Edward J. Yaw Music Technology Center includes, on the first floor, an experimental theater lab with recording studio; a second instructional recording studio; electronic music/aural comprehensive class-rooms; a general classroom; and a scene shop and dressing room. On the second floor are mul-tiple student practice rooms, a piano lab, facul-ty offices, a general classroom, a multipurpose room and a seating area.

Dance, electronic music, music, music recording and musical theatre are the academic programs now housed at the Yaw Center.

Joining Dr. Yaw for the dedication of new Yaw Music Technology Center and his portrait are (from left) CCM Trustees Jeffrey Advokat and Thomas Pepe, CCM Board Vice Chair Paul Licitra, and Trustees Michael A. Van Allen, Lance Tkacs and Dr. Barbara Hadzima.
