As the year draws to an end, it is appropriate to take time to reflect on what we have accomplished. As President of the Palm Beach Police Foundation, I am pleased to report that during fiscal year 2011-2012 we fulfilled our mission with distinction.

In the area of education, we awarded more than $100,000 in scholarships to qualified children of sworn officers and civilian employees of the Palm Beach Police Department. The William I. Koch Foundation has pledged $150,000 for graduate education scholarships as well as providing free tuition to the Oxbridge Academy to one student each year. In addition, the Charles Evans Foundation, through Trustee Joel Pashcow, pledged $150,000 for scholarship assistance and special needs.

We satisfied our commitment to the Palm Beach Police Department to supplement training and equipment and to help fund needs not met in the normal budget process. We accomplished this by donating $150,000 towards the purchase and installation of a town-wide video monitoring system. When fully operational, this surveillance network will enhance security and assist the police department in the identification and apprehension of criminal offenders.

We presented Palm Beach Crime Watch, Inc. with our annual check in the amount of $25,000 to assist that organization in developing and implementing crime prevention programs and services for the benefit of residents and the business community.

Our principal fundraising event is the Policemen’s Ball. And, from what our dedicated committee chairs tell me, this year’s party will again be the highlight of the Palm Beach social calendar. Plan to join us at Mar-a-Lago on Saturday, January 5th for a delightful evening of dinner, dancing, and exciting presentations in the company of friends who share your commitment to support local law enforcement. And we encourage you to participate in our annual tennis and golf tournaments too. For tickets to the Ball, please call Jennifer Recarey at (561) 820-8118.

Finally, It is my pleasure to send you best wishes for the New Year.

re-enactments of unsolved crimes. The first case chosen was a brutal murder in a residential area of Palm Beach County. The re-enactment aired on WPEC-Channel 12 on September 9, 1981 and within five minutes a caller identified the suspect who was later convicted of the crime.

A resident of the Town of Palm Beach for three decades, Mr. Dreyfoos recognized the outstanding services provided by the men and women of the Palm Beach Police Department. Knowing that the police department was always on the ready gave Mr. Dreyfoos and his family a sense of security they greatly valued.

Alexander W. Dreyfoos, Jr., a graduate of MIT and Harvard Business School, is an entrepreneur and inventor, holding ten U.S. and numerous foreign patents in electronics and photography. In 1963 he founded Photo Electronics Corporation, a developer of electronic equipment for the photography industry, and for 23 years he was the owner of television station WPEC- Channel 12. He went on to become Chairman of The Dreyfoos Group, a private capital management firm.

After founding the Palm Beach County Council of the Arts (now the Palm Beach County Cultural Council), Mr. Dreyfoos championed the 12 year long endeavor to build the Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. He is a Trustee Emeritus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; is a founding member and former Chairman of The Economic Council of Palm Beach County; and a founding Board Member of The Scripps Research Institute.

Mr. Dreyoos’ philanthropic achievements include the Frank Gehry designed Dreyfoos Building at MIT, and his major gifts to the Kravis Center. After making the largest ever donation to a Florida public school, the Palm Beach County School of the Arts was renamed the Dreyfoos School of the Arts. In recognition of Alex and Renate Dreyfoos’ gift of $1,000,000 to Scripps, the entrance lobby of the Scripps Florida Campus was named in their honor.
