The City of Cuyahoga Falls was founded in 1812 by William Wetmore to develop land owned by Judge Joshua Stow of Middletown, Conn. It was originally named Manchester and later changed, at the request of the Ohio Postmaster General, to its present name, Cuyahoga Falls. A MUST SEE area is Falls River Square in downtown Cuyahoga Falls, near the Clock Tow-er, which is a pedestrian area along the historical Cuyahoga River. Filled with antique shops, restaurants and coffee shops, more than 300,000 people attend the summer festivals held here. There is a fountain located at the north end, and an interactive fountain located at the South end, near the Clock Tower of the Falls River Square/Riverfront Centre District — www.fall-sriversquaredistrict.com.

When William Wetmore first set foot in what is now Cuyahoga Falls, he had no idea that 200 years later the town would still be thriving. Today, a bicentennial committee — made up of resi-dents, city staff and others with ties to the town — is planning fes-tivities all year long to mark the historic event.

The story actually begins — long before Wetmore — with the Cuyahoga River and the falls that run through the city. Na-tive Americans used the river to travel from the Great Lakes to the Mississippi River, but often walked through Cuyahoga Falls be-cause that portion of the river was too rough.

When Wetmore arrived in Ohio, his job was to develop land owned by Judge Joshua Stow of Middletown, Conn. In those days, the town was called Manchester. The name was later changed to Cuyahoga Falls, at the request of the Ohio Postmaster General.

Cuyahoga Falls has celebrated many milestones over the years, including sesquicentennial festivities in 1962.

“The majority of us [on the bicentennial executive committee] were five to 15 years old and still remember the sesquicentennial a little,” says Jeff Iula, honorary chairman of the executive commit-tee. “We’re trying to blend and relate back to the early ’60s.”

The executive committee is further broken down into subcom-mittees — Tim Belby is the parade subcommittee chair; Laura Pe-trella is in charge of the community connections subcommittee; Sharon Myers is the history subcommittee chair; Karyn Petty is

the special events subcommittee chair; Teresa Hazlett is the River Heritage subcommittee chair, and Carol Morganti is heading up the commemorative book subcommittee.

River heritage committee“We have been assigned the opening and closing ceremonies,”

Hazlett says. “We are planning on having a torch at Falls Riv-er Square. A torch-lighting ceremony will take place Aug. 3 for opening night.”

A&C Welding Inc., a local company, is designing the cauldron which will be mounted on a 30-foot pole and will remain at Falls River Square long after the bicentennial festivities are finished.

“It will be visible,” Hazlett says. “Our goal is to have the caul-dron in place by April. We hope to do our Arbor Day tree plant-ing there.”

The committee also will focus on the Cuyahoga River.“We want to tie-in how the river was used within our history,”

she says. “We are working on representing the Indian heritage. We also hope to have actors portray William Wetmore and Henry Newberry, the first mayor.”

The committee plans to set up an Indian Village in a grassy area near Metropolis Popcorn.

Hazlett says they also hope to have a flotilla of [professional]

kayakers during the opening-day ceremony.Closing day ceremonies are still under discussion, Hazlett said

in January.“We will extinguish the torch,” she says. “One angle we’re look-

ing at is the future of the river, a vision for the future.”

The parade subcommittee“The parade — with the theme ‘200 years along the Crooked

River’ — is really the biggest thing we’re working on,” Iula says. “We’re trying to get politicians, sports stars, entertainers and bas-ketball coach Bobby Knight. We’re trying to get anyone with a connection to Cuyahoga Falls.”

Iula says the guests can also have ties to Summit County like Chrissie Hynde, Melina Kanakaredes or Valerie Bertinelli.

The parade committee began meeting last spring, with a spi-noff committee focused on constructing a top-secret float meet-ing recently.

Belby could not discuss the particulars of the float, but did say it would be “something very special and symbolic.”

On Aug. 11, the parade will step off from Bolich Middle School at 10 a.m. It will travel down Portage Trail to Second Street where it will turn left and pass in front of City Hall. The parade will then turn right on Oakwood and end at Oakwood and Front Street.

“In addition to judges judging the entries, we will also have the ‘People’s Choice Award,’” Belby said. “All spectators will have the ability to vote via text message for the parade entry they enjoyed the most.”

History and legacy subcommitteeThe History and Legacy subcommittee is busy with plans for a

historic house tour Aug. 4, says chair Sharon Myers. “We’re also working on restoring the Keyser barn on West Bath Road,” she says.

The tour will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will feature eight houses. Also open on the tour will be the Chapel at Oak-wood with a cemetery tour, the Car Museum, the Historical Soci-ety and Pilgrim Church.

“There will be artists from the Cuyahoga Valley Art Center painting at each house along with [we hope] historic re-enactors at each house,” Myers says.

Commemorative book subcommitteeSince last spring, members of the commemorative book com-

mittee have been hard at work on “Cuyahoga Falls Bicentenni-al 2012 — Celebrating our past, our present and our future,” [a working title,] says chair Carol Morganti. “The book will capture the history, culture and traditions of Cuyahoga Falls’ rich heritage, from its founding as a pioneer town 200 years ago to the vibrant and progressive city that it is today.”

Targeted for release in spring 2013, the committee hopes to cover and highlight events from the entire bicentennial year in-cluding the bicentennial wedding day on Dec. 12.

“It’s going to be a very fun-filled, exciting year for the Falls,” Morganti says, adding that committee members see this com-memorative book as a hard cover, coffee table book filled with “an abundance of striking images of the city’s past and present, plus personal accounts from long-time residents, information available from new media and much more,” Morganti says.

Summer extravaganzaThe hard work of each committee culminates this summer

— Aug. 3 to 12 — during the official bicentennial festivities.“We would like to have an event in each ward so everyone

feels a part of the Cuyahoga Falls family,” Iula says. “We would also like to do something with each school too. Our youngest school is 40-some years old.”

With volunteers lined up and committee members meeting regularly, plans are taking shape, Iula says.

“There are a lot of different aspects to consider,” he says. “We would like to get as many people involved as possible.”!

Cuyahoga Falls residents will take a quick trip down memo-ry lane when the time capsule buried 50 years ago is unearthed Aug. 7.

Since 1962, the time capsule has rested below a grassy strip on Broad Boulevard.

When it is cracked open at 1 p.m., bicentennial organizers ex-pect to find letters from residents and copies of The Falls News and the Akron Beacon Journal.

Ann Durr, president of Valley Savings Bank, spoke with Kath-ryn Hunter who owned the Falls News and the Hudson Times in the 1960s.

“The time capsule came about to mark the 150th anniversa-ry and was organized through the Falls News,” Durr says, adding there are also pictures, a telephone book, some maps and a letter from then-Mayor David Sanders inside.

According to an article in the Aug. 14, 1962, issue of the Falls News, residents were asked to write letters describing life in

Cuyahoga Falls in 1962, listing family histories and making pre-dictions about the city’s future. The letters were to be included in the time capsule.

An article three weeks later — Sept. 4, 1962 — describes a near catastrophe with the letters. According to the article, the letters were kept in a large cardboard box. A cleaning lady, who did not realize the letters were in the box, threw it away.

Luckily, after many phone calls and a trip to the landfill on Cuyahoga Street, the letters were recovered.

If all goes according to plan, and the time capsule contents are still intact, the items will be on display at Valley Savings Bank Aug. 11, says Valerie Wax Carr, administrative vice president for the Bicentennial.

“Valley Savings is hosting a ‘Celebrate the City’ event,” adds Carr, who is also the city’s director of public service. “We’re hop-ing people coming for the parade will stop in and see the dis-play.”

As for a new time capsule, Carr says plans are still up in the air. “We have another time capsule buried near the library that will be dug up in another 50 years. We’re still reviewing the idea [of a new capsule].”!
