FILMSAll films in Italian with English subtitles

THE MAN WHO WILL COME(L’UOMO CHE VERRÀ) Director: Giorgio DirittiItaly, 2009, 115m This historical drama takes place in 1944 and richly portrays the lives of the Italian villagers, who, despite the German occupation, adhere to ancient tradition and the rhythms of rural life. In addition to its striking visual beauty, this film’s cultural authenticity extends to the dialogue, which is spoken entirely in the Bolognese dialect. Winner of Best Film at the David di Donatello Awards 2010 and the Special Jury Award at the Rome Film Fest.

TERRA MADRE Director: Ermanno OlmiItaly, 2009, 78 mins. The 2006 Terra Madre convention opens this highly inspiring documentary, where 4000 producers of food crops from around the world seek to find solutions for an ailing planet. The projects of key participants filmed over the next two years illustrate how, through the responsible production of food, humans can return to the role of caretaker, not exploiter, of Mother Earth. Eye-opening ideas, lyrical scenes of farmland and the spirit of eating (and living) well coalesce into a poetic call to action. This film was a success at the Berlin Film Festival and comes to us via SLOW FOOD BOLOGNA.

HE WHITE SPACE(LO SPAZIO BIANCO) Director: Francesca ComenciniItaly, 2009, 96 mins. Maria (Buy) is a woman cast adrift by life, barely able to care for herself, she’s astonished to find herself

pregnant after a brief fling. When she gives birth to a premature baby, Maria feels as though her life has been put on hold. As her tiny daughter fights for life in an incubator, Maria struggles with her own—trying to find a way to fill the white space with purpose and hope. Margherita Buy powers this drama with a bravura performance which earned her a Pasinetti Award at the Venice Film Festival, where THE WHITE SPACE won a total of five awards.

BASILICATA COAST TO COASTDirector: Rocco PapaleoItaly, 2010, 105 mins. Four small-time musicians decide to perform in a musical festival and they take a 10-day trek by foot across their home region of Basilicata (located at the top of the arch on the boot of Italy) in this engaging comedy. The disgruntled four are joined by a grumpy journalist , but along the way, good humor, adventure and the spark of romance take their blues away. Funny, charming and sweetly endearing, this is a road trip you won’t want to miss.

WE CAN DO THAT( Si Puo Fare) 2008

This film was Cinema Italiano audience’s favorite and is being brought back by popular demand!!! It is a rousing comedy based on true events. Nello, a former trade unionist, uses his managerial skills to transform a cooperative of mental patients into a successful company. Highly original, this hilarious feel-good story won one David di Donatello Award and was nominated for 7 more; and won film festival awards from around the world.

THE CEZANNE AFFAIRDirector: Sergio RubiniItaly, 2009 When Gabriele Rossetti returns to his small town in southern Italy to say goodbye to his dying father, the old man’s last words reawaken a memory from the forgotten past. The father had worked as the local railway station chief, but his thwarted ambition had always been to paint. The resulting mood

swings, taken out on Gabriele’s mother and on the peace and quiet of an otherwise tranquil family life, were the only shadows in young Gabriele’s childhood, leading him to seek refuge in his vivid fantasy, as well as in the much less problematic company of a young bachelor uncle who lives with the family and knows how to enjoy himself. But then, in the course of the preparations for the funeral, Gabriele spends a night in the home where he grew up, discovering a truth about his father that he never would have imagined, and which radically alters his view of his eccentric parent.

THE FRIENDS OF THE MARGHERITA CAFEDirector: Pupi AvatiItaly, 2009 Bologna, 1954. Taddeo, a young man of 18, dreams of coming one of the regulars of the mythical Margherita Café, found under the portico across from his family’s home.Through a ploy, he manages to become the chauffeur of Al, the neighbourhood’s most glamorous and mysterious resident. Having been taken

under Al’s wing, Taddeo gets to witness the adventures of the outrageous friends at Margherita’s Cafe and in the end Taddeo, whom everyone calls “Kid”, manages to gain acceptance as a regular at the Margherita Café.

THE WIND THAT BLOWS AROUNDDirector: Giorgio DirittiItaly, 2005, “This is a movie of tremendous, subtle power that is difficult to forget, and Giorgio Diritti is a director of impressive grace and patience. Set in the tiny, fictional town of Chersogno in the Piedmont region of northern Italy, the film is choked with stunning scenery, each alpine scene more awesome -- and, often, more intimidating -- than the next. The gorgeous-yet-severe landscape combines with the movie’s score and its unpredictable characters to create an ever-present tension that, though it seems unlikely in a film as slow-moving as this one, is in fact its driving force.” Taken from Martha Fischer’s Open Roads Review of 2006.

The fare at Aloha Salads is as fresh as it gets because all their main ingredients are locally sourced. If you’re in a creative mood make your own salad. Guess you can’t do that if your hunger pangs get in the way – go for their signature Aloha Passion Salad. It is a scrumptious blend of red grapes, apples, walnuts, cranberries, mangoes and blue cheese served over mixed field greens and slathered in a passion orange vinaigrette. Have it with a topping of steak.

Taste the flavors of a far away land in the Moroccan Chicken Salad at California Pizza Kitchen. Chicken breast covered in Moroccan spices is served with crisp Romaine lettuce, fresh avocado and beets, chopped egg, carrots,

dried cranberries and red bell peppers. Then a combination of Roasted butternut squash, Medjool dates and toasted almonds are added to lend a distinctive flavor. Finally it is drizzled with champagne vinaigrette. Enjoy.

If you’re the type that loves cooking and are looking to adopt a new vegetable into your diet, Kale, available at Whole Foods, is a deliciously earthy must-try. It is a nutritious vegetable with powerful antioxidant properties, high in beta-carotene, vitamin K and vitamin C. It also contains sulforaphane - a chemical believed to have anti-cancer properties. Here’s an easy no-fail recipe that takes only minutes to prepare.

KAHALA MALL HAS A RANGE OF DELICIOUS OPTIONS FOR THOSE THAT LOVE THE GREEN STUFF AS MUCH AS THEIR BACON.
