Hey Zygot ians!

As the cool breezes bring us back to reality, we at Zygote are steering our course towards a busy Autumn! What an amazing incredible summer it has been at Zygote. It feels like we have traveled a million miles and just keep circling back to our happy nest on East 30th street.

We started off the spring with the thrilling news that Zygote Press received a Martha Joseph Prize for Distinguished Service to the Arts from the Cleveland Arts Prize for 2012. Liz and I tried to keep with “business as usual” in the midst of a heavy schedule familiar only to celebrities and other glitterati—one of the results is a terrific video created by CAP by Ted Sikora, which can be viewed at our website. What an amazing experience to be so honored by the Cleveland community and our peers. . TRADES ProjectZygote is looking for people who are in the union and interested in collaborating with a printmaker on a portfolio called “TRADES”. This idea is centered on trading experiences of what we all do for a living and celebrating that dialogue through the creation of a collaborative print portfolio. No art experience is necessary, just an interest in working together with a skilled artist-printmaker to create a body of work. This will be a long-term project over the course of the 2013 that will culminate with an exhibition of the created work displayed in Summer of 2013. We hope to represent as many unions as possible; from the various trades, to teachers, firemen and police unions. If you are a union worker or if you know someone that is union–Please contact Liz Maugans [email protected].

. Gett ing TechnologicalJaime Hosticka, one of Northeast Ohio’s most respected technology strategists, and the head of Lake and Sky Technology in Cleveland (www.lakeandsky.com) is Zygote’s newest consultant. Hosticka’s charge is to match our technologies to our accelerating growth and, as important, to the human patterns and interactions that are unique to the signature way we work. “The technology needs to match the dynamics of the people that are using them,” says Hosticka. “As much as a printing project demands the right press, Zygote’s technology needs to build on the talents and styles of its staff.” Hosticka, with experience in homes, businesses large and small, and schools, is a technician and strategist who is able to provide more than just excellent IT support. “He is an observer of the ways that individuals work and organizations operate,” said Liz Maugans.

. RantL e t ’s M a k e a N e w D e a l !by Liz Maugans

During the New Deal Era (1933-36), printmakers identified themselves as both cultural workers and craftsmen. During the Great Depression, the largest pictorial record of this country’s economic crisis and its affect on the work force was represented in over 200,000 prints. Identifying closely with the working class subjects they depicted, Federal Arts Project printmakers made exceptional visual responses to the social and political environment in which they worked. Allied with the labor movement, graphic artists and printmakers were team players in progressive causes, political struggles and campaigns for change.

During the 1930s, American printmaking gained new prominence as a vital form of expression, and printmakers created a strong artistic vocabulary that influenced post World War II artistic movements. Artists and skilled craftsmen in the trades were accustomed to working with machinery and laborers were famously depicted in WPA art as muscular, intellectual and in control. Women, as well as racial and ethnic minorities were shown prominently as active participants in the workshop experience.

In the 1930’s (and before), prints were seen as limited to commercial illustration and mass-produced reproductions of paintings. The paradigm shift in of the 1930’s Graphic Arts workshops expanded the shift to a broader based cultural democracy. Project workshops provided space, presses, materials and skilled master printers in supportive communities where artists exchanged ideas and gave each other critical feedback about their works. Printmakers proofed their blocks in the workshop with Stuart Davis and Louis Lozowick. Many labor battles have been won and lost, but the passionate voices have been preserved in the posters, fliers, newspapers, broad sides, lithographs, and other media depicting both the cause and the struggle.

At Zygote, printmakers put a lot of time, resources and energy into their work. Our mobilized fleet of presses heads to the streets offering greater access to the public. Current labor movements have embraced new technologies through social media and fundraising sites like Kickstarter, replacing the direct physical protest that print used to offer. It wasn’t too long ago that printmaking’s future was headed towards obsolescence as print shops were closing and being pushed out by computers.

The future of arts, culture and labor are on the precipice. How do we attract future comrades? What type of education, enlightenment, and historical context will be needed to recruit new practitioners and leadership and sustain those currently fighting the fight and preserving the craft?

There is still an American perception of visual arts as elitist, creating estrangement between artists and non-artists. Because of Fine Art’s historical association with European aristocracy, monarchy and the church, it can seem at odds with democracy. Printmaking bridged this gap because of the ability to make multiples and its response to troubled conditions experienced by the majority of the country. Prints have enjoyed a larger, more diverse audience than other Fine Art media. Many Project administrators supported printmaking as the logical process for creating art for the people. Collective Bargaining, Occupy Wall Street, Student loan debt, GLBT issues, Environmental causes, Fair Trade, are but a few of the causes that directly effect this generation.

I am honored to work with an involved and passionate contingent from Cleveland’s Labor movement and look forward to the many collaborations we can create with our town’s history. Our exhibition in November, The New Deal Updated, raises these questions about printmaking’s long ago and current activities at the height of the election as we pay respect to the histories of the working class and those conditions as it is witnessed by artist-printmakers. Zygote offers an interesting vantage point in a lecture that is moderated by Bill Busta that has a panel of young and international talent to talk about the relevance of their voice and related mission in print.

The program was created to offer intellectual, cultural & creative exchange between the artists and host sites and include a cross-sector and cross-institutional component and the creation of new work with deep community engagement. Zygote welcomes Ivan Andres Lecaros Correa from Santiago, Chile to be here as a resident artist working from September 5-November 30. He is a co-founder of Aguafuerte de Grabado Taller, and his work will be featured in the Foreign Affairs exhibition on October 30th with our German exchange artists.

W i n t e r A r t i s t - i n - R e s i d e n c eZygote welcomes Bec Young from Pittsburgh, PA. as our Winter artist-resident. Bec is an active member of Justseeds [an Artists’ Cooperative that reflects a radical social, environmental, and political stance] as well as a member of Artist Image Resource. Her work will be featured in the New Deal exhibition along with Claudio Giacone Orso [Cleveland] and Guillermo Trejo [the Young Audiences Creative Fusion artist from Mexico] which opens on November 2nd. New Deal graphic works from the collections of Rachel Davis, Wiliam Busta and Tom Sodders will be on view in the adjacent gallery. This work features images of the working class and whets the appetite for a traveling show coming to Cleveland Public Library in February that commemorates the 75th Anniversary of the 1937 Little Steel Strike.

M O N O T H O NEach November, Zygote lures selected artists [who are not printmakers] into our lair to work with Zygote interns and resident-artists to create monoprints during the month of November. Two works are selected for our Holiday show which will be sold for $150 each to benefit Zygote Press. The artists get to keep the rest of the prints they produce and get a chance to see how their work translates using this immediate and painterly print application. 2012 MONOTHON hopefuls are Michael Abarca, Lyz Bly, Judith Brandon, John Carlson, Dana Depew, Don King, Jimmy Kuehnle, Loren Naji, Eric Rippert, Mark Schatz and Beth Whalley.

4 O h i o C o o p s H e a d t o C b u sIf you are in the Columbus area, please check out Peripheral Vision: A View from Ohio Printmaking Cooperatives from August 23 – October 27 at Urban Arts Space, 50 West Town Street, Columbus. Four Ohio Coops come together each year for a Print Gathering to show the strength and vitality of printmaking in Ohio. Each of the prints included in the exhibition will be “linked” to its neighbor with a visual horizon line showing our solidarity with the rest of the printmakers in the state. . Zygot ian-of-the-Year

Wendy Partridge has been a resident artist at Zygote Press since 2006. At Zygote, she is responsible for the letterpress area, where she also teaches several workshops on letterpress printing. Often, she is referred to as the Queen of Zygote’s letterpress facilities -- which have quickly grown under her leadership, and have never been better maintained. It is with great enthusiasm that we celebrate her commitment to Zygote Press. Wendy is a printmaker, painter, and book artist. She studied art at San Francisco State University and the California College of Arts and Crafts. She has a graduate degree in art conservation from NYU and works as a paintings conservator at ICA Art Conservation in Cleveland, Ohio.
