Even the linchpins of the offensive line, Sterling (6 feet, 240 pounds) and Lachapelle (6-1, 245) kept in shape by running 5-kilometer races this summer. Ford and Leary, equally known for their exploits on the basketball court, will be a dangerous combination through the air. Ford was the third-leading passer in the PTC despite being only a part-time QB a year ago. Boyd and Clark make up an all-new backfield. The defense is young but had a strong preseason.

EL again confronts a rough opening stretch of the schedule with Lawrence, Cony, Bangor, and Brunswick out of the gate.

The KVAC is loaded at the top, as always, with Skowhegan, Cony, Messalonskee and Lawrence leading the way. EL topped the next group a year ago and could do so again if younger

County said that his two-fisted tailback combo of Brown and James were “lethal” as freshmen and that Brown has “Jared Turcotte potential,” a reference to the former Blue Devil who won the Fitzpatrick Trophy and starred at the University of Maine. Curry, the younger brother of former Lewiston QB Ronnie Turner, transfers from EL and adds blistering speed. Patrie is a three-year starter on both sides of the ball. Uncertain areas

include the offensive line, where Phelan moves from fullback to fill one void, and quarterback, where Allen and Emerson are in a derby for the starting job. The Devils might be a year away from contending for the PTC title, but they’ll be

entertaining to watch in the here-and-now.Coach’s comment: “They are talented, but a lot of them have never been here before. When we got off the bus in Bangor (for the first scrimmage), I saw some wide-eyed kids.” — Coach Bill County.

KVAC and regional titles are reasonable goals, and challenging for a state title isn’t out of the question. Barre should be one of the top runners in the state. Awil, Mohamed Mohamed and the Balsamo brothers could help vault the Blue Devils into contention for their first state title since 2007. With the junior trio of Shaw, Abdi and True forming a solid top

three, the girls could suprise, especially if they add some depth. Coach’s comment: “I think the boys are going

to be very good this year. I think they have a shot at winning most if not all of their meets.” — Coach T.J. Niles.

Wescott has coached most of the players through the ranks since junior high. The Greyhounds should be in the mix with Spruce Mountain and Winthrop among the top teams in the MVC.Coach’s comment: “We want to go deeper into the playoffs than we did last year and keep going

forward.” — Coach Julie Wescott.

Outlook: Richardson is the Dev i ls' third different coach in three years. He brings a contagious enthusiasm, most recently involved in the sport as an official after coaching stops at multiple prep schools, including Kents Hill. He saw improvement throughout the summer's double sessions and is impressed with the versatility of his older players. With 40 girls in camp, Richardson expects to have a highly competitive JV team that will deepen the Devils' varsity roster as the season progresses. Lewiston has shown flashes of potential the past two years and may be poised for a return to the playoffs.Coach’s comment: “Our goal is to find the way

to best use our talent all over the field. You can’t do it with just a few. They’ve learned that the past few years.” — Coach Randy Richardson.

Godin may move from receiver to quarterback this season, with Nick Bowie and LaFrance also likely to see time under center. Godin and Croteau are tireless tacklers on defense. Oxford Hills has won only one game each of the past three seasons, all against Mt. Ararat. Defense kept the Vikings competitive in most contests a year ago and likely will lead this season's quest for upward mobility in the PTC.

The offensive back-field is battle-tested, with leading rusher Mills and Lyman returning. Vermette also saw plenty of action as the backup QB last year. Morgan was an all-confer-
