Saturday Academy is a non-profit organization that provides educational opportunities to all students in grades 2-12 throughout the Portland Metro Area. Our in-depth, hands-on classes, camps and full-day workshops are taught by community experts dedicated to sharing their passion and inspiring curiosity.

ASEOur Apprenticeships in Science & Engineering (ASE) program provides internships for high school students in professional environments. Internships are 8-week, full-time summer opportunities, mentored by practicing professionals in science and engineering throughout Oregon and southwest Washington.

Saturday Academy exists because children need avenues to explore their curiosity. I hope your curiosity is piqued exploring this catalog!
We welcome all students in grades 2-12 for hands-on, in-depth learning. Our classes, camps and internships are taught by experts in their fields so that children see how intellectual curiosity leads to careers. I was inspired to study brain development from my mother who worked on a neonatal intensive care unit. This led me into research for 25 years on the brain basis of learning and memory during early development. Every child needs a chance to find their passion. Our class sizes are small and classes are project-oriented. We concentrate on the love of learning so there are no formal tests--just what the students create! Please note that our programs are held at sites throughout the Portland-Metro area and we are not just on Saturdays! We provide tuition assistance for families with need.

Biomimicry is an approach to innovation that seeks sustainable solutions to human challenges by emulating nature’s time-tested patterns and strategies. The Biomimicry Global Design Challenge is an annual competition that asks teams of students to address human problems with nature-inspired solutions. The challenge is hosted by the Biomimicry Institute, in partnership with the Ray C. Anderson Foundation.
Saturday Academy is offering a class aimed at teaching students more about biomimicry and preparing them to enter the challenge, which occurs in early 2019. Working in teams with an adult coach, students will explore real-world examples of biomimicry engineering and apply this to create innovations that support a healthier planet. What pressing problem
would you like to solve? What genius design of nature will inspire your solution?
Instructor Ariel Heintze, B.S. Architectural Engineering, is an engineer in the building design industry. She is excited about bringing the design process to young minds. She will introduce students to designing by observing nature, and lead them through the Biomimicry Institute’s Youth Challenge curriculum, preparing them for entry into the 2019 challenge. As Ariel says, “Once you start seeing the engineering in the natural world, you won’t be able to stop!”

Beth Slikas, Ph. D., Biology, works at the Oregon National Primate Center as a Research Associate. She has also worked in a Marine Biological Laboratory exploring microbial communities and at the Hatfield Marine Science Center as a Postdoctoral Fellow.
Styles Smith, MS in Biology, specialized in Coral Reef microbiomes at Penn State. His research focused on understanding the functional role of bacteria within corals. He has taught multiple laboratory sections including general biology, genetics and genomics, function and development and evolution. Styles has experience in science communication and STEM education.
Krystina G. Sorwell, Ph.D., is a visiting assistant professor of psychology at Linfield College. She received her Ph.D. in 2013 in Behavioral Neuroscience at Oregon Health and Science University where her research focused on hormone changes in aging.
Gary Sweet, BA, received his degree from the Pacific Northwest College of Art, with a focus in painting and drawing. He has shown his work in many local galleries, including installations of re-purposed stuffed animals which earned him the nickname of the stuffed animal guy.
Karen Wolfgang, MA Educational Leadership, BA Anthropology, also holds a certificate in Environmental Studies from Princeton University. Karen is passionate about sustainability and helping people create a better relationship with their natural and built environments. An expert in gardening, Karen uses the chemical properties of plants to make tinctures and useful creations.

DISCOVER PLASMA: Save the Date for the Science Plasma Expo!Thursday, November 8, 2018 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at the Oregon Convention Center. Registration is not required.Did you know that plasma – the fourth state of matter– makes up almost all of the visible universe? Aurora Borealis and some forms of lightning (neon and fluorescent) are just three examples of plasma — a glowing ionized gas with unique behavior. Plasma physicists study how plasma behaves. Their research provides data that leads to new answers to old problems.

SA2U is Saturday Academy’s school-based program, providing hands-on, project-based classes to students in grades 2 – 8 at their schools. Does your school already have an afterschool program? Would other families be interested in enrolling their children in an after-school SA2U class? Scheduling a class is simple. You just need to:

• Receive permission for your school’s principal or administrator
• Identify a responsible individual who will be in the building while the class is running

ASE Program OverviewFounded in 1990, the Apprenticeships in Science & Engineering (ASE) program was designed to address a growing concern over our nation’s future technical and scientific workforce. ASE has grown from a pilot program of six student interns to 150 interns in 2018. The program has provided more than 4,000 students with hands-on, project-based, eight-week internships with practicing professionals in science and engineering disciplines. Mentoring organizations include universities, hospitals, research institutions and private companies throughout Oregon and SW Washington. Student interns follow a rigorous application, interview and selection process and complete 296 hours under mentor supervision.
