STUDENT ACTIVITIES HIGHLIGHTS ~Vicki Hildreth, Activities Director The 2017/2018 school year is well underway and the Activities Office is as busy as ever! In September, our fall athletes will be spotlighted with a Fall Sports Pep Rally, and we will highlight our 46 active clubs at our annual Club Rush Week and Club Day, giving clubs the opportunity to gain new members while offering raising some money through food sales. To close out the month of September, the Class of 2021 will elect into office their Fall Semester Class Council. South High is spearheading a project that involves working with the other TUSD high schools in an effort to collect items to assist those impacted by Hurricane Harvey and Irma. All of our TUSD high school students will come together in a concerted effort to provide some much-needed relief to those areas most affected by these tragic storms. We will also be reaching out to our communities to assist us in our efforts as well…stay tuned for more information! As always, October will prove to be an active month as well. Homecoming 2017 will take center stage where this year’s Homecoming theme will be a Finding Neverland-inspired celebration. The selection of the Homecoming Court will kick off all of the Homecoming festivities including a lunchtime assembly to announce the Court, Spirit Week activities such as dress up days and games, all building to the football game versus Torrance High School. During the big game, a half-time show took place at center field to crown the Homecoming King and Queen.

In addition, October will offer the opportunity for South High to raise awareness about the dangers of drug and alcohol use through the annual Red Ribbon Week. During this week, Student Council will provide information about the consequences of tobacco, alcohol and drug usage. Up next, we gear up for the months of November and December, which offers the Canned Food Drive, our 1st Class Competition, the Winter Drama Production, the annual Holiday Concert, the Winter Dance Show and our popular Head Start Program. As we look forward to all of our upcoming activities we’d like to encourage our South High students to get involved in all that our campus has to offer. A Message from the Class of 2018: As you may already know, the Senior Class traditionally hosts several events throughout the year in celebration of our upcoming graduation. Some of these events include the prom and a seniors-only pizza party, and Baccalaureate. The cost of hosting these events, in additional to several others, is estimated to exceed $12,000. We have continuously fundraised throughout our four years at South High; however, our efforts have not been as successful as we had hoped. Due to this shortfall, we are reaching out to families and friends of our Senior Class of 2018 for direct donations. If every senior’s family made a $20 donation to the Class of 2018, the senior class would be able to enjoy the same senior activities that former students have experienced. We’ve made donating very easy. For families wishing to make a donation, one way would be to drop off or mail a check made payable to South High School, and indicate in the memo section that it is a donation to the Class of 2018. Donations made in this manner should be mailed to South High School, Attention: Activities Office. The Class of 2018 would like to thank you for your consideration and generous support in making the next nine months an unforgettable senior year! Should you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact Vicki Hildreth in the Activities Office at [email protected].

Sincerely,

The Class of 2018 Class Council

1. ELIGIBILITY. Students must participate through a local PTA/PTSA. Each student’s eligibility is determined by the state and local

PTA/PTSA. A student may develop an entry inside or outside of school.

2. ARTS CATEGORIES. There are six arts categories—dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition,

photography and visual arts. Students may enter the National PTA Reflections Program in one or more arts categories. See each

arts category rules for additional entry requirements.

3. GRADE DIVISIONS. Students may enter in the appropriate division for their grade (Primary: Preschool-Grade 2; Intermediate:

Grades 3-5; Middle School: Grades 6-8; High School: Grades 9-12; Special Artist: All grades welcome). See Special Artist Division

rules for entry requirements.

4. HOW TO ENTER. Entrants must submit their artwork and student entry form to their local PTA/PTSA program according to local

and state PTA procedures. Entrants must follow requirements and instructions specific to each arts category and division.

Contact local PTA programs for deadlines and additional information.

5. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS. (All participants must also follow arts category and if applicable, Special Artist Division rules) • Only new pieces of artwork inspired by the current year’s theme may be submitted.

• Each entry must be the original work of one student only. An adult may not alter the creative integrity of a student’s work.

Because the program is designed to encourage and recognize each student’s individual creativity, help from an adult or

collaboration with other students is not allowed except in the Special Artist Division. Other individuals may appear in or perform

a student’s work, but the work itself must be the creative product of one student only. Only one student may be recognized as

the award recipient for each entry. See the specific arts category rules and special artist division rules for details. • Each entry must contain a title and all entries must include an artist statement. The artist statement communicates what

inspired the work, how it relates to the theme, and the content of the work. The statement must include at least 10 words and

not exceed 100 words.

• Use of copyrighted material is prohibited, except for background music in dance choreography and film production entries.

If used in dance choreography and film production entries, background music must be cited on the entry form. Plagiarized

entries will be disqualified. Use of PowerPoint templates are prohibited.

6. FINALIST SELECTION AND NOTIFICATION. Entries are reviewed at local, regional, state and national levels. Each PTA determines

its own reviewers for the program. Entries will be reviewed primarily on how well the student uses their artistic vision to portray

the theme, their originality and creativity. The National PTA Reflections® program makes no restrictions on content or subject

matter in artwork. Under no condition may parents or students contact a reviewer to dispute the status/score of any entry.

Each PTA in its sole discretion will select finalists for exhibition and provide awards/prizes. Awards are announced per local and

state procedures. National awards and events are announced May 1, 2018 at PTA.org/Reflections.

7. OWNERSHIP AND LICENSE. Ownership in any submission shall remain the property of the entrant, but entry into this program

constitutes entrant’s irrevocable permission and consent that PTA may display, copy, reproduce, enhance, print, sublicense,

publish, distribute and create derivative works for PTA purposes. PTA is not responsible for lost or damaged entries. Submission

of entry into the PTA Reflections program constitutes acceptance of all rules and conditions.

8. PARTICIPATING ENTITIES. This program is administered by the National Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and PTA affiliates.

Parent groups not affiliated with National PTA are not eligible to sponsor this program.
