our buildings and highways

can have far-reaching effects

• Unkempt environments hints

at community apathy and

encourages further vandalism

• Ongoing maintenance of these

issues can act as a crime

deterrent and aid economic

development in urban areas

Creating a Positive Lasting Impression

• Public infrastructure is the first thing that

people see when they visit Rhode Island

• State launched Highway Beautification

Program in 2011 to present a new and

fresh message to visitors

• Began with murals and expanded to new

welcome signs at seven major gateways

and landscaping along I-95

• Program is about more than

public art installations

• There are many other things that can be

done to improve the appearance of our

roadways

• Signage, lighting, landscaping and

painting can all be used to carve out a

unique identity for Rhode Island

• Improvements aid economic

development and help improve quality of

life
