Brandon FureighBrandon is the chief strategy officer of the Truman National Security Project working to execute the strategic initiatives of the organization. He has served in several capacities during his time with Truman: from state campaigns manager and later advocacy director to director of training and public engage-ment, he has played a critical role in several Truman initiatives and programs. While serving as advocacy director, Brandon managed two of Truman’s award winning campaigns: Make US Strong and Operation Free. He led his team to key policy and legislative victories including the Truman Project’s first piece of legislation, the Energy Security Coordination Act of 2012, which was passed unanimously by the California State Senate. He also produced and co-wrote the Truman Project’s first presidential independent expenditure ad, “Commander in Chief,” a television ad that featured veterans. This ad won two Reed Awards for “Best Television Ad of 2012” and “Toughest Television Ad of 2012” by Campaigns and Elections magazine, and was named one of the four most effective ads of 2012 by the New York Times.

Before joining Truman, Brandon worked as a train-ing coordinator for the United States Marine Corps’ Mojave Viper, an urban combat training at the Twentynine Palms Marine Air Ground Task Force Training Command in Southern California. Brandon also worked in the entertainment industry for 12 years as an actor, director, and producer, which allowed him to travel the world. After making the decision to enter politics, he worked as a community organizer for Organizing for America, field organizer for Sowers for Congress, and a field consultant for Chahinian for City Council. Over the years, Brandon has conducted advocacy and communications trainings for thousands of volunteers, candidates, and elected officials across the United States.

PROFESSIONAL FELLOWS ALUMNI IMPACT AWARDS

Ken Chartrand Re-entry Case Manager – Franklin County House of Corrections

Greenfield, Massachusetts USA

[email protected]

International Fellowship 2015 Rwanda and Uganda

Ken is a re-entry case manager at the Franklin County House of Corrections in Greenfield, Massachusetts. He works on rehabilitation and recon-ciliation issues for post-release and re-integration for inmates.

Ken hosted a fellow from Rwanda and subsequently traveled to both Rwanda and Uganda. He worked with his fellow on a post-conflict reconciliation and restorative justice project in which released prisoners related to the war in Rwanda are returning home to small communities to live in close proximity with their former victims. Through his participation in the Professional Fellows program, Ken has helped make connections between people in Massachusetts and Rwanda and the model of re-integration he uses in his work is now being applied in Rwanda.

Congratulations to the 2015 Professional Fellows Alumni Impact Award winners.

The Alumni Impact Awards recognize the positive contributions of former Professional Fellows Program partici-pants. The 2015 winners were selected from a large pool of applicants and nominees, and have demonstrated an outstanding and continued commitment to their communities and countries.

The Alumni Impact Award includes round-trip travel for the Professional Fellows Congress, during which their accomplished will be recognized at the U.S. Department of State. They will also be active participants throughout the Congress, sharing their PFP experience during a panel discussion and taking part in many sessions. We encourage participants to seek out the Alumni Impact Awardees during breaks in the schedule to engage with them about your – and their – work.

UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF STATEThe State Department is the U.S. federal executive department responsible for the international rela-tions of the United States, equivalent to the foreign ministries of other countries. Created in 1789, the Department was the first executive department established. The State Department currently employs 19,000 U.S.-based employees and over 50,000 people in 190 countries. The State Department operates the diplomatic missions of the United States abroad and is responsible for implementing the foreign policy of the United States.

The Department is led by the Secretary of State, who is nominated by the President and confirmed by the Senate, and is a member of the President’s Cabinet. The current Secretary of State is John Kerry. The Secretary of State is the first Cabinet official in the order of precedence and in the presidential line of succession. For more information on the history of the State Department, U.S. diplomacy, and U.S. foreign-policy, please visit history.state.gov or www.usdiplomacy.org/history/overview/statedept.php.

BUREAU OF EDUCATIONAL AND CULTURAL AFFAIRS (ECA)The Congressional mandate of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) at the U.S. Department of State is “to increase mutual under-standing between people of the United States and other countries...and thus to assist in the development of friendly, sympathetic, and peaceful relations” (Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchanges Act of 1961). ECA engages youth, educators, and rising leaders in the United States and countries in the developed and developing world through a range of academic, sports, cultural, and professional exchange programs.

To conduct the Professional Fellows Program in 2015, the Department of State has partnered with 14 organizations: American Council of Young Political Leaders, American Councils for International Education: ACTR/ACCELS, Inc., Hands Along the Nile Development Services, Inc., International Center for Journalists, Inc., International City-County Management Association, Institute for Training and Development, Legacy International, National Committee on US-China Relations, Smith College, University of Montana System, University of Oklahoma, WorldChicago, World Learning, and WSOS Community Action Commission.

ECA has nearly one million alumni around the world, including more than 50 Nobel Laureates and over 350 current and former heads of state and government. One-third of member states of the United Nations are currently led by ECA alumni. For more information, visit www.exchanges.state.gov and www.alumni.state.gov.

PROFESSIONAL FELLOWS PROGRAM The Professional Fellows Program provides fo-cused professional development and support to emerging leaders working in the fields of Economic Empowerment, NGO Development, Legislative Process and Governance, Environmental Sustainability, and Tolerance and Conflict Resolution. The Professional Fellows Program provides partici-pants with 4-6 week practical fellowships to broaden their professional expertise. Placed in private, nonprofit, and government offices, Professional Fellows learn how issues in their respective fields are addressed in the United States, interact with a broad network of colleagues, and develop a deeper understanding of Americans and American society. The program offers a unique opportunity for inter-national Fellows and their American colleagues to work together to address issues of shared importance, develop new insights into professional approaches to common issues, and broaden their understanding of foreign working environments, practices, and society.

The 2015 Professional Fellows Program is supporting 462 international Fellows from more than 50 coun-tries and territories, and reciprocal visits by more than 130 American participants. During the Fall 2015 program, 240 Professional Fellows from 44 countries participated in fellowships in 31 American states and the District of Columbia.

At the conclusion of the Professional Fellowship Program, Fellows participate in a Professional Fellows Congress in Washington, DC. The Congress marks the culmination of the program and provides a forum for Fellows to share experiences, insights, and ideas, and explore ways to incorporate their learning and expertise into concrete and innovative activities upon returning home.
