Hello friends. I hope everyone had a good summer and are back in the swing of things.

We had a great lecture by Dr. Kev-in Murphy in April and it was in-deed a treat for all present. We had a very good turnout and I want to thank those who came and made it a success.

Next month we have Dr. Ernesto Lee presenting to us, “From Single Implants to Full Reconstructions: A Road Map for Enhanced Surgical-Restorative Team Syner-gies.” Dr. Lee is a Prosthodontist in Pennsylvania, who is an international lecturer of repute. He will discuss the importance of team work in contemporary implant therapy and also discuss a variety of clinical scenarios

For our spring meeting, we have arranged for a lecture by Dr. Daniel Melker who is a periodontist in Florida. Anyone who has heard him, or reads the AAP Connect emails, will attest to his clinical excellence. I am eager

to listen and see his unique approach to periodontal therapy, especially the biologic shaping of teeth. More details to follow in the next newsletter.

As you are aware, our academy is considering a name change which will be voted on at the annual meeting in Florida. I am sure many of you have an opinion on the subject and so I urge you to try and attend the session on Monday when the voting will take place.

We need members and we need them to step up and become officers of this society. To address this issue we recently changed the term of our officers to two years. However we still need more officers. As of now we do not have anyone “climbing the ladder” once the cur-rent two year term is over. If you or anyone you know is interested, please encourage them to join our society and accept the responsibility of becoming an officer.

Please contact me with any suggestions or complaints!!

Warm regards,

— Amit

NJSP President’s Messagedr. Nima Mirmadjlessi

Dear Colleagues,

Dr. Amit Vora, our NJSP President, has unfortunately

had to step down due to personal reasons, as of August 16, 2015.

We wish him the best and thank him for his many years of gener-ously donated time and efforts for NJSP. We hope that he will be

able to attend our BOT and yearly meetings; as we ap-preciate his comradery, experience and leadership.

I am certain that the majority of our members have been reading and/or participating in the AAP open fo-rum digest. There are several challenges that we are facing in our practices every day.

There are certain challenges that could even affect the future of our specialty! There is the never ending challenge of addressing the lack of knowledge about periodontal disease by the public. Furthermore, the amount of dental school debt has limited the ability for new graduates pursuing independent private practice. In addition, one of the biggest challenges has been the decrease demand from the general dentists to seek the services from the periodontal specialists. We are facing new technologies and treatment modalities with pow-erful marketing programs which to date have not been shown to be the equal to our current standard of care. Despite limited evidence, technology has not surpassed the valued of our extensive knowledge and clinical skills.

I remember when I was completing my residency, one of my instructors used to say that anyone is able to ex-tract a tooth, it is our responsibility to provide health, stability and function.

The titanium wind is so strong in our spe-cialty that the AAP is proposing to change the name of our 100+ year old academy. The rational is to increase the public’s awareness of our relevance and expertise. If you have been following the most recent changes in dental education CODA has ap-proved making Implant surgery part of the Prosthodontic specialty training and deter-mined

that this non-surgical specialty needs to add only one month of additional training.

As members of the NJSP, we are work-ing to establish a paradigm shift in our ef-forts. We are going to piggyback the Open Forum Digest provided by the AAP and we are going to establish a NJSP google group for our members only. This group

will have the opportunity to discuss challenges that we face statewide and have means of communication which have not been available to us before. We will also discuss Practice Management, Dental and Medical In-surance Compensation, which will make our practices much more efficient and productive.

We will be discussing different ways to engage resourc-es, such as social media, to educate the public on Peri-odontal Disease, Implant Therapy and Perimplantitis! Our new focus we will be on team building through sharing information, education, mentorship and leader-ship.

We will be offering an opportunity to our members, with every registration; they will receive three certifi-cates where they will be able to invite up to three re-storative specialists [GP’s] to our meetings. We will be able to sit side-by-side, listen with us to our speakers and plant seeds of open discussion among all of us. Let us make everyone on the patient care team aware of how we can provide treatment options to our dental care providers in a more productive manner.

We are Periodontists, who will save natural teeth utiliz-ing Prosthetics, Occlusion and Periodontal Maintenance Therapy. Furthermore, Dental Implants, Bone Replace-ment Graft and Guided Tissue Regeneration should be other treatment modalities that can be provided by the Periodontist. Hopefully, our members will be able to utilize this information and to promote their individual private practices and become the GATEKEEPERS of patient care. Ladies and gentlemen, this is a call to action to improve our professional lives through Education, Mentorship and Leadership.

Respectfully,

— Nima Mirmadjlessi DDS, MSD

A Special Message from AAP President-Electdr. Wayne Aldredge

Dear NJSP Colleagues:

Monday November 16 at 5:00 pm at the Gaylord Palms Hotel in Orlando, FL.

Please save this time and date. This is when the AAP General Assembly meets at our annual meeting. And it is the one chance you will have to support changing our Academy’s name to the American Academy of Periodontology and Dental Implantology.

Many of you have heard our AAP Trustees and officers speak in favor of this change or have read the com-munications from the AAP. The March 2015 survey by the AAP showed that 89% of members support this change. Another survey, comparing the current name to the proposed name, showed more than a 300% in-crease in consumers choosing a member of the AAPID to do their dental implant versus a member of the AAP. That is impact.

This change must be approved by a 75% vote of the members present at the General Assembly. You must be present to vote. The 75% threshold means three posi-tive votes are needed to balance one negative vote. Ev-ery vote will be critical.

Please do not assume someone else will do this for you. For some, attending the General Assembly will mean delaying their departure and even staying an ex-

tra day. Against that small inconvenience consider this: how often do you get the opportunity to do something which will positively impact your practice, the practices’ of your colleagues and the periodontists who will fol-low us? This is that important.

The leaders of the New Jersey Society of Periodontists encourage you to attend the General Assembly meet-ing, vote, and support this initiative.

Sincerely,

Dr. Wayne AldredgePresident-elect, American Academy of Periodontology Vice President, Northeastern Society of Periodontists Past President, New Jersey Society of Periodontists Clinical Assistant Professor Dept of Periodontology & Implant Dentistry State University of New York @ Stony Brook

Diplomate, American Board of Periodontology

Dear Members,

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Ernesto Lee will be

presenting a 6 CEU credit seminar for NJSP on Wednesday, October 7, 2015, entitled “From Single Im-plants to Full Reconstructions: A Roadmap for Enhanced Surgical- Restorative Team Synergies.”

The NEW format for our NJSP seminars will be a start time of 8am and ending at 2pm.

This will allow our attendees to peruse other activities after our seminar as this day is usually held on our mem-bers “day-off”.

We will be offering a complimentary Full Breakfast as a special member benefit for this seminar.

Dr. Mirmadjlessi stated in his newsletter message to you [see p.3]:

“One of the biggest challenges has been the de-crease demand from the general dentists to seek the services from the periodontal specialists”.

Our society’s goal is to encourage interaction with our “Restorative Specialists”, the GP’s; so to this end Dr. Lee will emphasize the role of the Periodontists and the col-laborative aspects with the Restorative Specialists, the GP’s ANd upon completion of your Registration for Dr. Lee’s seminar; each member will receive three [3] cer-tificates for your referring Restorative Specialists to Dr. Lee’s seminar as a NJSP member benefit. [No additional Fee]

Dr. Lee’s topics are centered on Esthetics, Implants and Interdisciplinary Therapy. He will discuss both Surgical and Restorative consideration and their inter-relations.

We are actively looking to create and provide “real value” for being a member of NJSP.

REMINdER: All New Jersey Dentists are required to have 40 CEU credits by the License Renewal date of Oc-tober 31, 2015.

The mission of the Oral Cancer Foundation is to spread early detec-tion and awareness to the public so we can find oral cancer at its most curable stage and hopefully save lives.

The OCF Walk/Run for Awareness in Memory of David Nasto will be held on Sunday September 20 at Perona Farms in Andover, NJ, rain or shine... it’s a great way with free oral cancer screenings, raffles, free breakfast and barbecue lunch, live band, speakers, Zumba, dunk tank, ice cream truck, goody bags, shirts and so much more.. They will have awards for run winners as well.

It’s really a great day for everyone but most important all who attend are learning the signs and symptoms of oral cancer.

They are giving away a Velscope to the dental office/team who raises the most donations as well

Henry Schein is on board as Silver Sponsor and they are donating all the screening supplies for the event.

NJSP would like to get a team to-gether for the OCF Walk/Run for Awareness in Memory of David Nas-to will be held on Sunday September 20 at Perona Farms in Andover, NJ,

We would register and then create a team name and then everyone can register under that team name

And yes NJSP can be a sponsor as well.

Right now I have 3 dentists to do screenings. They can use 2 additional dentists to volunteer for performing oral cancer screenings they provide scrub tops for our screeners too... really nice OCF burgundy scrub tops. If any hygienists or assistants would like to help out that would be great to assist as it would be very helpful to the dentist.

Please see the listing of NJSP up-coming Events
