FALL 2015

Guiding our decisions &actions as we seek to live & love like Jesus.

At Prince of Peace, God is leading us to join Jesus in the restoration of the world.

We are reminded in our monthly newsletter that we are called to live balanced lives of discipleship: UP in relationship to God, IN in relationship with each other, and OUT in witness and service to our community and world. This balance should be evident in the use of our fi nancial resources as well. Often when faced with debt, churches decrease their giving locally and globally. I am supporting the 20/20 Vision Campaign because it is balanced. Not only will we be able to reduce our debt, we will increase our capacity for local and global ministry support, now and in the future.

I AM SUPPORTING THE 20/20 VISION CAMPAIGN BECAUSE IT IS BALANCED

Trinity Lutheran Seminary’s mission is to form leaders for Christ’s church at work in the world. This commitment sets Trinity apart as a premier seminary in the formation of authentic leaders who are healthy, vibrant, maturing, transformative, resilient and evangelical. As a church, we are called to identify, inspire and develop leaders who want to change the world and choose service above self. The 20/20 Vision Campaign provides us with the opportunity to partner with Trinity and be involved in the formation of leaders for the greater church. This is just one way that Prince of Peace can share its vision of a world restored with grace and peace outside of the walls of our church.

PASTOR’S NOTE

D ear Prince of Peace Family:

I will admit that when I returned from sabbatical and thought about our need for another capital campaign, I wasn’t really excited. However, once we began making plans for this and once we had our new 20/20 Vision developed, I have to say this couldn’t come at a better time.

In addition to my excitement, the Congregation Council and the Campaign Steering Team have both exhibited tremendous passion for this eff ort. Both groups have overwhelmingly stated that they will make more signifi cant fi nancial gifts to this campaign than they did to the Bold Together Campaign three years ago.

What excites me most about the 20/20 Vision Campaign that is described on the pages of this booklet is that it shows us what will happen as we live into the vision that we have discerned God calling us to fulfi ll.

Our vision calls us into four Focus Areas, and this campaign supports each of these:

1. A Culture of Grace and Peace

2. Relational Ministry

3. Discipleship Formation

4. Investing in God’s Vision

Thank you for dreaming with us over the last year about what God is calling us to be in these next years. I’m very excited that we will now invest in this vision and see it become a reality.

In Christ,

Rev. Jonathan Eilert

Supporting the ELCA

Together we are challenged as the church to embrace hope, unity, and an abundance of gifts as resurrection promises that will indeed make all things new. The ELCA recently embarked on a capital campaign with signifi cant goals that represent the best of our church’s work together. The ELCA wants to grow and strengthen congregations, raise up and equip leaders, break the cycle of hunger and poverty, and accompany global partners. All of these goals invest in areas of ministry where our eff orts are multiplied because we do these things better together than we do them alone.

In Christ,

Rev. Jonathan Eilert

pon completion of our facility expansion in 2014 we started to ask, “What’s next for Prince of Peace?” We had initiatives such as our trips to Haiti and our desire to be an internship site for Trinity Seminary, but nothing held it all together. As a result, we launched 20/20 Vision under the leadership of Steve Riedell – Chairman, Pastor Jonathan, Pastor Lorne, Bill Clevidence, Danette Miller, Karen Vance, Kathy Haugen, Josh Amstutz, Tania Cronin, Cyndee Brekas, Tanner Stinnett and James Sheehy. Over the course of six months, they discerned what it is that God is calling us as the community at Prince of Peace to become. In May 2015, they presented this vision to the congregation, and it was approved.

FOCUS AREASSUPPORTING PRINCE OF PEACE’SMISSION & VISION FOR MINISTRY

A CULTURE OF GRACE & PEACE

The Haitian Timoun Foundation (HTF) is a grass roots organization that empowers Haitians to lift themselves out of poverty. HTF provides the opportunity for partners like Prince of Peace to immerse itself into their culture to help us understand their needs, their struggles and experience God’s blessings fi rst hand. It is a way for Prince of Peace members to extend a helping hand globally in relational ministry.

We celebrate the abundant gifts from God that are present at Prince of Peace. We will continue to build a culture of generosity, reduce our debt, and increase our capacity for missional impact. As faithful stewards, we will invest in God’s vision of a world restored with grace and peace.

Prince of Peace is committed to the formation of disciples for the sake of the gospel and the world. We believe God empowers all people with a vocational calling. We will cultivate opportunities that equip disciples and raise up leaders within our congregation and the greater church.

Relationships are at the heart of our mission at Prince of Peace. As we do ministry within our congregation, in our community, and around the world, we will live & love like Jesus by building partnerships with a relational focus.

Prince of Peace is passionate about being a community where all people can experience grace and peace. We will prayerfully live into our core values, fostering a culture that fi nds unity in diversity because we are one in Christ.

20%

CAPITAL APPEAL

s we seek a world restored with grace and peace, we intend to reduce our debt and magnify our ability to live & love like Jesus.

The overarching goals of the 20/20 Vision Campaign are:

• We desire to continue to build a culture of generosity at Prince of Peace.

• We seek to raise at least $1.55 million over the next three years (November 1, 2015 through October 31, 2018) to fund 20/20 Vision Campaign projects.

All gifts given to the 20/20 Vision Campaign will be split 80/20, up to the first $1.55 million raised, as follows:

80% of the 1.55 million capital goal ($1.2 million with capital goal met) will be utilized to assist us in meeting our existing mortgage obligation and pay down the principal on the loan.

20% of gifts provided ($310,000 with capital goal met) will go to the following projects:

• $70,000 for the 2-year stipend and expenses of a seminary intern to serve at Prince of Peace (Discipleship Formation)

• $60,000 to the ELCA Capital Campaign (Culture of Grace & Peace)

• $84,000 to the Haitian Timoun Foundation (HTF) and the summer camp initiative (Culture of Grace & Peace, Relational Mission)

• $24,000 to the Southern Ohio Synod Vision initiatives (Culture of Grace & Peace, Relational Ministry)

• $24,000 to the Youth Leadership Development Fund and camp scholarships (Discipleship Formation)

• $24,000 to the Trinity Lutheran Seminary partnership (Discipleship Formation)

• $24,000 to invest in future initiatives (Culture of Grace & Peace, Relational Ministry)

Once we reach $1.55 million in gifts, the formula will switch to 20/80 with 20% being allocated to mortgage payments and 80% to other projects according to our 20/20 Vision Campaign priorities. This demonstrates the ministry impact we can have once we eliminate our mortgage debt burden.

Contributing to the vision of the synod connects us with other Lutherans from across the state by strengthening lay and pastoral leaders and providing opportunities for collaboration among congregations. By working together and communicating the Gospel in compelling ways, we join Jesus in the restoration of the world.

The 20/20 Vision Campaign is seeking 20% more in financial gifts than we received in the Bold Together Campaign.

n 2015, we anticipate $834,000 in gifts from Prince of Peace members to our annual giving fund. To remain strong and relevant in our ministry, we need to increase our 2016 annual giving to $875,700 (+5%), even in the midst of our 20/20 Vision Campaign.

Our Mission to “Live & Love like Jesus” and our Vision to see “A World Restored With Grace & Peace” happens through our annual ministry. There isn’t enough space here to share all of the ways in which this happens, but our annual ministries are aligned with our Values:

Service— Prince of Peace provides the LIFE Food Pantry with significant space, and our building hosts numerous ministries where we engage our entire community.

Worship— Celebration and expression is central to our life together, and we average 440 people engaged in worship across three services each weekend.

Invitation— Your annual gifts enable Prince of Peace to establish a culture where those new to our community find us inviting and welcoming.

Transformation— Individuals and families take part in faith and leadership formation through Sunday School, youth programs, Catechism, adult education and small groups.

Connection— Through fellowship, Grace Groups, and numerous ministries, we choose to invest in each other’s lives.

Hope— We experience God’s grace in worship and are propelled into the community and into our world.

Keeping these Focus Areas strong through our annual ministry is what keeps Prince of Peace the unique Christian Community that keeps us strengthened as we live out our faith.

The reality is that we have scaled back our ministries over the last several years. The 20/20 Vision Campaign begins to restore some of those items into our annual commitments, such as support for the Synod. However, it is time for Prince of Peace to boldly move forward again. We need to care for our Synod, invest in our building repairs and fund staff development. We also need to grow our annual ministry to meet unmet needs in ministry for our youngest children. With enhanced giving, we have the opportunity to fulfill our full potential.

God of grace and peace,

You are a generous and loving God and we see evidence of your emerging Kingdom surrounding us every day. Thank you for these signs of hope and promise. ids meet the Holy Spirit when they spend a week at Camp Mowana. They are surrounded by college-aged Lutherans who talk out loud about their faith. The campers sing rowdy Jesus songs, lean on each other as they canoe and zip-line and outpost, whisper prayers in front of each other, and send those prayers fl oating on soap bubbles through the towering pine trees. They become part of a strong community of believers. Camp is an empowering experience. I am pledging support to the 20/20 Vision Campaign so that all of our families can aff ord to send their children to Camp Mowana in summers to come, and we can continue to sponsor children from Roselawn and Bond Hill.

The transformative power of serving youth

I have seen a tough teen from the inner city lose the chip on his muscled shoulder when he realized he didn’t have to “one up” the kids in his cabin. I have seen a quiet inner city girl lose the heavy make up and giant earrings over the course of the week when she realized there was no competition for who looked oldest. I watched an unchurched suburban boy read directly from the Bible for the fi rst time and smile as he recognized the story.

Developing disciples and future leaders

In Matthew 28:19, Jesus commands us to create disciples. As a church, we are called to identify, inspire and develop leaders. Trinity Seminary’s internship program provides us with the opportunity to be actively involved in the formation of church leaders.

Becoming a seminary internship congregation

Our 20/20 Vision Campaign will support a Trinity student in the Master of Divinity curriculum with two years of contextual learning experience here at Prince of Peace.

ur son Brad and son-in-law Dan are both pastors of the ELCA. For both of them, the highlight of their four-year seminary journey was their internship. They both felt that this was the time of tremendous growth, putting their education into practice in terms of preaching, teaching, discipleship, pastoral care, and learning the business side of ministry. I know that Prince of Peace would be an ideal site for a seminary intern. Not only could we help the intern grow into their ministry, but our congregation would give a tremendous contribution to the discipleship journey of an upcoming pastor. What better way to further the kingdom of God?

FINANCIAL GOAL

he 20/20 Vision Campaign is seeking 20% more in financial gifts than we received in our prior Bold Together Capital Campaign. Your elected Prince of Peace leadership team believes this level of increase is possible for many reasons.

To begin with, the overall economic climate across the U.S. and here locally has improved for the majority. More people are employed, removing a level of financial uncertainty for many.

As we’ve added space and expanded our ministry, our membership and worship attendance numbers as a congregation have grown. We are blessed to be seeing God’s vision for our church take hold and propel us forward to serve those around us.

And finally, your leadership team believes in the vision and ministry work we can support together by leveraging our collective gifts and talents to improve the lives of all. Free from our debt burden, we can contribute to the needs of our community, invest in discipleship formation, and increase our support to mission partners, including the Haitian Timoun Foundation, the ELCA Campaign, the Southern Ohio Synod, and Trinity Lutheran Seminary.

God is leading Prince of Peace toward a vision of the world that is restored and whole. The 20/20 Vision Campaign presents a tremendous way to live into the trust of this vision as we invest in the future ministry life for our church and seek to live & love like Jesus.

A World Restored With Grace & Peace

Question: When do my gift payments for the Appeal begin?

Answer: Unless you prefer a different timetable, the payment period begins November 1, 2015. The Response Card has a place for you to indicate how and when you will pay.

Question: How long does the Appeal last?

Answer: The Appeal will last for three years: November 1, 2015 - October 31, 2018. However, if you feel you can make a larger gift by extending the time, you may do so. You may also make a one-time gift or make payments for less than three years.

Question: Is it possible just to make gifts to the Appeal without making a specific commitment?

Answer: Yes, but written responses, while never legally binding, give us an indication of what we can expect and plan for our mutual ministry and will ultimately determine our ability to impact the world. Please fill out a response card indicating how you plan to respond even if you do not make a commitment.

Question: Do all gifts to the Appeal have to be cash?

Answer: No. Gifts of property, appreciated stock, mutual funds, in-kind gifts needed for property improvements, cash value from insurance policies or policy loan proceeds, Certificates of Deposit [CDs], bonds and annuities are just some of the ways we can give. All of these gifts may be subject to restrictions and limitations, so it is wise to consult

your financial adviser or accountant. Note: contact Sue McILvoy at the office for gifts other than cash.

Important! Do not sell the property yourself or you will be unable to avoid the capital gains tax. If you are trying to capture a capital loss, you should sell it yourself.

Question: What is the advantage of giving appreciated stocks or property?

Answer: You can avoid capital gains taxes and also receive a tax deduction for making a charitable gift.

Question: How do I make a gift of appreciated stock?

Answer: Have your broker transfer shares from your account to the church. Contact Sue McILvoy at the office for account information.

Important! Do not sell the stock yourself or you will be unable to avoid the capital gains tax. The church’s broker will sell the stock, and you will get credit for its average market value on the day it is transferred.

Question: Will I be asked to give a specific amount?

Answer: You will be asked to prayerfully consider an amount based on the gift charts to reach our goals. If every gift on the chart is fulfilled, we will exceed our goal.
