Thanks to Emergency Solutions Grant funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and Metro Government, House of Ruth was able to convert one of the 12 Glade House beds to an emergency shelter bed in 2013. This bed is incorporated into House of Ruth’s Glade House Transitional Housing property and is expressly intended for single, unaccompanied adults who are homeless, living HIV-positive, and for whom other shelter stays are life- threatening due to their compromised immune system and/or gender identity. Since July 2013, we have provided this emergency shelter for up to 30 days at a time to 16 different people. Many went on to join the recovery community of the Glade House Transitional Housing Program and are finding stability and sobriety there. One such individual is Vearley, who came to Glade House after her sister called our office on her behalf. Vearley and her husband had left their Midwest home to escape a history of drug abuse, and found themselves in Louisville without enough resources to survive. She was scared and did not know the city, but had begun attending 12-step meetings out of her commitment to get clean. With the help of The Coalition for the Homeless, Vearley’s husband found shelter while she entered the emergency shelter bed at Glade House. There she participated in intensive case management and accessed HIV care, with positive health effects. From there, she chose to enter the Glade House Transitional Housing Program, where she brightened and diversified the recovery community. Because of the emergency shelter bed,Vearley successfully moved from homelessness and fear to sobriety and stability. Today she and her husband live in House of Ruth permanent housing, and Vearley regularly volunteers in our Clothes Closet, providing assistance to other clients in need (see photo above). We are thrilled to share in Vearley’s recovery and wish her well as she works toward earning her GED. Support for people to live positive

Dearest Friends and Supporters,

We have a lot to be proud of from our operating year that ended on June 30, 2014. Among the highlights at year’s end: nearly 95% of the previously homeless adults and children that reside in our 17 single family homes had maintained their housing for at least seven months. And more than 75% of the adults in our intensive outpatient program (IOP) for addiction recovery had stable housing, compared to only 30% when they entered IOP. We invite you to peruse our Annual Report at our website, www.houseofruth.net, to learn more.

THANK YOU to our committed supporters who make these results possible for our clients every day! We celebrate our contributors by listing those from January 1 through June 30 on page 3. To view the complete Donor Roll, please go to our website. An extra special thanks goes to The Gheens Foundation, whose $50,000 gift made it possible for us to weather a challenging year brought on by federal sequestration.

Speaking of accomplishments, we have been working to raise funds for an exciting capital improvement project at Glade House, our transitional and emergency shelter facility. The kitchen at Glade desperately needs a makeover, and it’s about to get one. The new kitchen will be called Sharon and Chet’s Café, in memory of Sharon Westwood, who died in 2013. She is the sister of Robert Westwood and mother of Kenny Hilpp, both of whom have spearheaded the fundraising efforts. We expect to begin the kitchen work in September. Look for progress updates on Facebook: www.facebook.com/HouseofRuthLouisville and our website.

The current, cramped

Glade House kitchen.

But we aren’t stopping with the kitchen. We need additional funds for upgrades throughout Glade, including exterior paint and tuck pointing, replacement windows, and bathroom updates. To be a part of the exciting transformation, please contact me at 587-5080. I’d love to tell you more.
