Community College

When Granite State College announced its new partnership with Nashua Community College (NCC), the news quickly caught the attention of Bruno Soares.

“After graduating from NCC with my associate degree, a staff member approached me and asked if I would be interested in going to Granite State College. I knew that this was the opportunity for me. Everything just came together.”

Good timing is only a small part of Bruno’s story. From the earliest stages, he had a vision for what it was going to take to not only graduate from NCC, but to move onto a bachelor’s degree and ultimately pursue law school. He focused on his coursework and achieved good grades. He also took on various internships, leadership roles, jobs, and volunteer work that would complement his studies and help him grow as a professional.

“I had an internship at DCYF as an interpreter, volunteered for charities, served as the online learning assistant, taught a Portuguese language class, and I most recently helped out at a middle school with English language learners. Because I want to become an immigration lawyer, I also work in a law office in Manchester, New Hampshire.”

As a busy young professional, Bruno counts on his family and his mentors when he needs support. Bruno has encountered faculty

members and staff that have helped him transition from NCC to GSC, and who provided guidance that have helped him refine his goals. Bruno also credits his mother:

“My mom, even though she lives in Brazil, helps me a lot and encourages me to do my best.”

Education has a major role in Bruno’s journey, but it is also his ability to connect what he’s learning to all the other aspects of his life that has helped him progress towards his goals at such a rapid pace. Both academically and in his community, those around Bruno think of him as a leader and when asked for advice that he’d give to a community college students who want follow a similar pathway, Bruno shared:

“it’s the best thing you can do. earning a bachelor’s degree is something that nobody can take away from you. And at gSC, you can tell they care and they’ll help put you on the right path.”

In March 2014, Bruno Soares completed his bachelor’s degree. He graduates as a member of Alpha Sigma Lambda, GSC’s prestigious honor society, and is currently applying to law schools.

Heather Larson will soon graduate and even though it was one of her first classes at Granite State College, she still has a lot to say about taking biology with Dr. Sarah Eck:

“To this day, I can say that it was just the most amazing, interactive course I’ve taken,” Heather shared. “I still remember doing the lung capacity lab!”

For Heather—and realistically, for most GSC students—coming back to college was a major decision and there were many things that made her hesitant, including online courses. Just one course is all it took. Heather experienced the power of online learning and in just a few short months, she’ll have a bachelor’s degree to prove its value.

These moments are what matter the most to Granite State College. The high level of quality that Sarah Eck brings as an online faculty member, matched with her passion for science, helps set GSC apart and reach impressive goals, such as its two top national rankings from U.S. News and World Report for best online programs.

Granite State College embraces the good work of Sarah Eck, along with other members of the faculty who are innovators in online learning, and she now serves as a Faculty Fellow. In this role, she partners with colleagues to discuss best practices within their respective online classes. This helps leverage Sarah’s various insights and expertise among other instructors so as a community, the faculty can strengthen the teaching and learning that happens online at Granite State College.

Sarah shared: “Having the opportunity to discuss best practices at the faculty level from one colleague to another generates new ideas. It elevates the level of teaching, it betters instruction for our students, and therefore we have better learning taking place.”

Recently Sarah collaborated with John Gianforte, a GSC astronomy professor. John was inspired by the lab activities that Sarah includes in her online courses and how they encourage student engagement through active experimentation. John adopted this approach in his own courses.

The results? Students enjoyed the experience and it helped reinforce what they learned. One of Gianforte’s students gave feedback saying, “It has been the most interesting, informative, and fun class I have taken so far.”

Granite State College is committed to making the academic experience of students as rich as possible and is actively growing its Faculty Fellows program. The College looks forward to seeing further faculty collaboration and the tremendous difference that it makes in the online classroom for GSC students!

Paula Schoonmaker reached many milestones before attending Granite State College: receiving a bachelor’s degree, getting married, and raising her children. As an undergraduate, Paula studied Biology and Chemistry. She always regretted not minoring in education. But like many working adults, she found her calling through hands-on career experience and identifying the things that interested her most about her job. For Paula, it was the teaching aspect of her work in science labs.

“I was teaching science labs at a university in Florida. After I got married and had kids, I decided to leave the workforce.”

When her children were older, she re-directed her career goals and started to build a resume of part-time jobs in special education, eventually making the transition to public schools.

Paula knew she wanted a teaching degree and a colleague recommended our Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Certification program. Paula set up a meeting to discuss the options.

“I decided on GSC after speaking with Beth Hoyt-Flewelling. Beth was so accommodating and wonderful. She came to my house, we had a cup of tea, and she handed me the all of the information. I was 48 at the

time and wondered who would hire me when I finished. I just looked at her and said, Can I do this? Beth answered, Absolutely! Beth was more than encouraging. I looked at her and said I’m in!“

Along her journey, Paula has found support that helped her balance her many roles: mother and spouse, teacher, and student.

“My family has pulled in, giving me so much support and picking up the slack around the house. They knew that mom’s got to do what mom’s got to do. And at work, every single one of the teachers that I work with has been in my situation and everyone is rooting for me.”

“The faculty at Granite State has been so encouraging and always available. They understand working and going to school. That is what makes Granite State College really attractive to me and a really good fit.”

Leveraging her experience and education with support from her family, colleagues, and Granite State, Paula is close to achieving her educational goals with a Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Certification.

FALL COURSES

FALL is a great time to make progress toward your degree. With a range of course offerings, schedules, and course delivery formats, Granite State makes attending fall classes easier than ever. Many classes are enhanced with the use of Moodle, an online learning management system. Support and training sessions on the basics of Moodle are available within student orientation. The orientation schedule is below, or contact your campus for one-on-one coaching.

In this course schedule, you will notice a column that denotes the “course delivery format” of each class. Here is a guide that will help you understand these terms so you can select the format that best fits your schedule and academic goals.

HybridClasses meet on campus during certain pre-selected weeks during the term. The rest of the instruction occurs online.

Face-to-FaceThese classes meet every week of the term on campus for face-to-face instruction between students and instructors.

OnlineAll course instruction occurs completely online. There is no face-to-face requirement.

BlendedA blended class is a combination of face-to-face and online. You will meet every week on campus and the remainder of the instructional time is online.

IntensivesIn an intensive course, each class lasts longer than a typical course and the classes take place over a shorter time period.

Field-BasedField-Based classes mix “on the job” experience (field-based) and student/instructor interactions via meetings at your job site or through appointments online. The student and instructor mutually determine these meeting times to fit the student’s goals. Students are expected to be working in their field-based setting for a minimum of 10 hours per week.

Library ServicesThe Granite State College Library and Research Commons (LRC) staff provides students with a full complement of services to meet their research needs. Library services are available by e-mail and phone during the day and evening hours seven days a week. The College Librarian provides support in developing a strategy for finding the resources needed to complete course assignments.

The GSC Discovery Service is the gateway to our electronic library collection, providing a full cadre of research databases, and thousands of e-books tailored to support the curriculum. As a GSC student you also have access to the collections of other academic libraries in New Hampshire. With a GSC college ID resources may be borrowed from NHCUC member libraries.

The Library offers a Library Research Success Seminar throughout the state and online. These 45 minute seminars are a great way to prepare for the research assignment students will encounter in their classes.

The GSC Library Research Guide includes resources to help students determine how to plot a research strategy, craft a successful database search, evaluate websites, and accurately document citations for resources used. The Library Research Guide is at: http://library.granite.edu/overviewresearchtool/.

Library services include support of faculty in developing research assignments, introductory library use tutorials, workshops on specific resources, and integrating library resources into class. assignments.

For more information concerning library services, please contact the College Librarian at [email protected], or 603.728.8140.

Tuition and FeesPlease Note: Course charges, fees, and regulations are subject to approval by the University System Board of Trustees and can change without prior notice.

Tuition costs for Granite State College are as follows: $495 per credit hour** $1485 per three credit course

**Tuition for out-of-state residents, as defined by USNH Residency Rules, is $525 per credit.

Some courses have materials or other fees (see individual course listings).

Students must be officially registered in a course in order to attend. Credit is only granted for courses in which you are registered and have completed. Granite State College reserves the right to cancel, postpone, or combine class sections, limit registrations, or change instructors. We regret any errors in printing, but we accept no liability for them. Please refer to WebRock for the most updated course schedule.

It is the student’s responsibility to become familiar with the college’s policies and procedures. Please check with our staff if you have any questions, and let us know if something arises which affects your learning experience. The college reserves the right to deny enrollment in any course when the prospective student lacks the necessary background or prerequisites.

Adding CoursesStudents may register for a 6 week Fall course during the of-ficial add/drop period by logging on to WebROCK, or by contacting a campus, the Registrar’s Office, or the Student Information Center. For courses that do not follow the 8 or 6-week schedule, specific ADD/DROP dates are posted on my.granite.edu.

GRADUATE REGISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS

How to Register1. For each course you wish to take, check prerequisites to ensure you have completed all of them.

2. New students registering for the first time please complete the registration form on the next page and fax, mail, or drop it off at your nearest campus. Students can also call the GSC Student Information Center to register for any courses at 1.855.GSC4ALL. Current students can register online at my.granite.edu/WebROCK.

3. Calculate the tuition and fees (check the course listings for any materials fees). You may pay for your course charges online or by phone (603.513.1330) by August 29, 2014.

(Cash will not be accepted.) You may also pay by mailing a check or money order to:

Student Accounts Granite State College

25 Hall Street, Concord, NH 03301

If a third party such as an employer or outside agency has agreed to pay all or part of your course charges, you must provide a written billing authorization to the Student Accounts Office.* The billing authorization must be on official letterhead and include the billable amount. No extensions or deferments will be granted if you will be reimbursed for courses after the completion of a term.

4. Your registration is confirmed and you are officially registered when all tuition and fees are either paid in full, or when payment arrangements have been made per the Cancellation for Non-Payment process (refer to Paying for Your Courses for details). You must complete this process before the deadline or you will be dropped from your courses. If you wish to re-register you will be charged an additional $25.00 re-registration fee. You will be contacted only if the course for which you are registered is cancelled or is at its enrollment capacity.

5. Students are responsible for purchasing text books and materials. Textbooks are an additional expense. MBS Books is the authorized textbook supplier for the college. Detailed information on required books, including ISBN, is listed online.

*Payment must be made to GSC directly upon receipt of an invoice. Payment not contingent upon grade.

Granite State College often talks about access and when we do, we are fully committed. Our work takes focus on diminishing the barriers that prevent motivated individuals from pursuing a college dream. GSC addresses these challenges and helps make higher education a reality.

On the surface, you can see how the College makes itself accessible through online courses, multiple locations, and affordable tuition. As the College grows, different themes of access are emerging in new and incredible ways. Grisel’s story is a perfect example.

At first, Grisel’s journey is quite typical. She earned a bachelor’s degree, took on new career opportunities, and eventually worked her way up the ladder, landing a position as a general manager at chain of retail clothing stores. In addition, she offered consultant services in administrative areas and human resources for small businesses. Eventually, Grisel relocated to the New Hampshire where she now lives with her husband. Although she had a solid foundation and a growing resume, she was presented with the challenge of learning a new language and leveraging her valuable experience in Venezuela to U.S. industry and commerce.

I knew that I wanted to get a master’s degree when I moved here from Venezuela. I thought it would be a good and positive challenge.

With English being her second language, face-to-face courses were initially intimidating, but Grisel was committed to facing this challenge head on.

In my first face-to-face class, we were required to do a presentation and I had never done something like that in English. My “a-ha moment” was being able to conquer the fear and feel confident that everyone understood my perspective. It gave me empowerment.

In the end, the online platform is one of the features that provided access for Grisel. She built confidence through online courses and quickly saw that the differences she brought to the classroom were actually strengths that fellow students and the faculty embraced.

You can have a different background at Granite State College. I was scared that being from another country would make me feel out of place. What I find is that people respect these differences and it’s something that they encourage me to express.

The Master of Science in Project Management is helping Grisel become a more comprehensive professional. Her husband is a fellow graduate student and together, their goal is to start an organization for personal growth.

Meet Dr. Roxanne Gonzales,

our new President

Page 37: Fall 2014 Course Schedule

37

She’s back.Over a decade ago, Dr. Gonzales worked at Granite State College (formerly the College for Lifelong Learning). Much has changed since her departure; however, this institution’s commitment to access and serving adult students remains strong, which is the quality that inspired Dr. Gonzales to return.

She’s walked in your shoes.“I was an adult learner myself. I had a new baby, two part-time jobs, and drove 100 miles a night to get my degree. I fully understand the balance. Whether a student is 18 or 45 years old, education is one of many priorities and we need to acknowledge that and understand what students are juggling in terms of their daily lives—their work, their families, their community.”

She brings prior learning expertise. The former role that Dr. Gonzales had at this institution was as a Prior Learning Assessment Coordinator. In her career, Dr. Gonzales continued to focus on the innovative ways that can help make higher education more relevant, valuable, affordable, and accessible for students.

She’s connected to military students & their families.Dr. Gonzales has close ties to the U.S. Air Force. Her husband and father are retired from the U.S. Air Force and one of her sons is an Iraq War veteran. Throughout her career, Dr. Gonzales has taken an interest in supporting military students and she looks forward to offering this insight to GSC.

She knows New Hampshire. From New Mexico to New Hampshire, Germany to Colorado, Dr. Gonzales has had the opportunity to live in communities around the world. In many ways, New Hampshire is home. She is an alumna of Portsmouth High and she resides in her husband’s childhood home along New Hampshire’s seacoast. Fun fact – According to Dr. Gonzales, there is no place in the world that has apples that are as good as the ones that grow in the Granite State!

She’s a nationally recognized expert in online learning.Dr. Gonzales has been invited to speak about online higher education as an expert panelist at national conferences.

She is ready!“I see my role as the President of Granite State as one who makes relationships and becomes a friend-maker across the state, both within higher education and among our partners: K-12 partners, profits, nonprofits, and the community. How can we help you?”

“Military Friendly” is NOT just a catch phrase. We are committed to assisting our military and veteran students with the array of responsibilities they balance with academics to help ensure they receive the best education possible.

A Quality EducationGSC is one of four institutions that comprise the University System of New Hampshire and it’s accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges through its Commission on Institutions of Higher Education.

Honoring Your CreditWe accept credit recommendations from the American Council on Education for training for all branches of the military. Each student is awarded four credits for Basic Training and is eligible for additional credits, which are assessed based on the student’s choice of degree, military service and training experience, and any other college credits that you have earned prior to GSC.

Special InsightGSC has a full-time Military Support and Outreach Coordinator who is dedicated to helping students achieve their academic goals. This staff person also assists faculty and staff members who have questions about military or veteran related issues. Outside the classroom, GSC has developed partnerships with several agencies that support and promote the success of active duty, veterans, reserve, and members of the National Guard, which helps GSC better connect our students to the services they need. GSC is a member of the Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges (SOC) and adheres to the Military Student Bill of Rights.

Deployment SupportWe recognize the importance of supporting our military students that are deployed in the service of this country. Students that are called to duty are permitted to withdraw without academic or financial penalties upon presentation of their deployment orders, or they can work with their Academic Coach to decide the best option for them to explore.

Tuition BenefitsAll of our degree programs are approved for VA education benefit programs including the Post 9/11 GI Bill and active duty military Tuition Assistance.

Workforce-Relevant ProgramsGSC strives to provide the strongest pathway for students to earn their degrees and build their careers by featuring a selection of degree programs that speak to today’s workforce development priorities. For military and veteran students, this focus can help strengthen the transition between military training and civilian employment.
