I started college right after high school like any normal kid. My mom ended up getting sick and life took over. I did what I had to do at the moment.

I had planned to go back to college. I wasn’t planning on it being 25 years later.

Balancing school and work with home life was a matter of sacrifice and prioritization—understanding what needs to be done when, making family first and guiding everything else into place. I have a supportive husband, son, and boss, so that helped me reach the finish line.

I graduated with my bachelor’s degree in 2010 and soon after, started a new job. I am currently

the education and training program coordinator where I work. I oversee all of the training that

goes on in our organization, as well as trainings with our partners, which is exciting.

I knew that I eventually wanted to go into a master’s program. When GSC introduced the Master of Science in Leadership, I thought this is the one.

In the master’s program, everything is relevant to your career. It’s designed with the practitioner in mind and it’s not a lot of fluff, which I love.

Everything we study offers something you can take away. Even when I took a project management course, it was still relevant to my leadership major.

What I Learned About LeadershipA Chronicle of Elaine’s Journey

Page 3: Fall 2015 Course Schedule

My capstone project was on Simulation and Authentic Practice in Leadership Development. I have a passion for empowering people. This project allowed me to delve into a subject that was of sincere interest, met an organizational need, and provided me with the information and practice I needed to build on a competency.

My capstone project explored the question: Why and how do we provide opportunities for new and emerging leaders to practice to become effective leaders? The product to be delivered by the capstone is a simulation to be used to help emerging leaders develop skills in conflict resolution, an interpersonal skill. The simulation was built into a leadership development program I created at work.

I am the first in my family to get a college degree. I come from a family where my parents didn’t even complete high school, so this was a big deal.

Getting my master’s was a goal that I wanted to achieve. Not only to lend credibility to the work I do but to say that I did it, proving to myself that I had what it took to get it done.

I have to say that it did more than that. It has impacted how I do my job, how I approach my job, and how I think about my job. Moreover, it has impacted my personal life as well.

It’s not the piece of paper that says “Master of Science in Leadership” that did this. It’s what I learned through the expedition. It’s the entire the process.

Paying it forward: Elaine Joins the GSC Faculty

Teaching at GSC is

serendipitous! This was not

my intent or purpose for

completing my master’s, but

I am loving it! Students at

GSC are amazing people. They

are strong, motivated, and

bring so much experience

and insight to the learning

experience, that I am humbled

by the opportunity.

The School of Education at Granite State College has embedded Swivl remote conferencing technology for the purpose of providing dynamic observation opportunities to teacher candidates as well as providing them tools to open up additional teaching options in the classroom. The technology has met with great success and positive feedback.

Self-reflection is one of the most impactful tools in education and the classroom. The Swivl allows the teacher to self assess, reflect, and adjust their own practice. We are all learners and the Swivl has given us an individualized, personalized and focused Professional Development resource that impacts student achievement.

Being able to observe myself teach has taught me so much about my teaching that I was not aware of. My most valuable lesson learned was to let go. I didn’t understand how engaging my students in authentic learning experiences would make my life easier and provide an even better education for them. I changed my practice so students felt safe to ask questions and make suggestions about their learning.

Library ServicesThe Granite State College Library and Research Commons (LRC) staff provides students with a full complement of services to meet their research needs. Library services are available by e-mail and phone during the day and evening hours seven days a week. The College Librarian provides support in developing a strategy for finding the resources needed to complete course assignments.

The GSC Discovery Service is the gateway to our electronic library collection, providing a full cadre of research databases, and thousands of e-books tailored to support the curriculum. As a GSC student you also have access to the collections of other academic libraries in New Hampshire. With a GSC college ID resources may be borrowed from NHCUC member libraries.

The Library offers a Library Research Success Seminar throughout the state and online. These 45 minute seminars are a great way to prepare for the research assignment students will encounter in their classes.

The GSC Library Research Guide includes resources to help students determine how to plot a research strategy, craft a successful database search, evaluate websites, and accurately document citations for resources used. The Library Research Guide is at: library.granite.edu/overviewresearchtool/.

Library services include support of faculty in developing research assignments, introductory library use tutorials, workshops on specific resources, and integrating library resources into class assignments.

For more information concerning library services, please contact the College Librarian at [email protected], or 603.728.8140.

R.N. Roundtable / A Conversation With the Nurses of the B.S.N. Program

Fun Facts About the Field of Nursing:

To put these facts into perspective, there are currently more than 21,000 R.N.s in New Hampshire. This means that 16,800 nurses will need to have a B.S.N. in our state to meet the Institute of Medicine’s recommendation. Granite State College wants to help.

Among the population of R.N.s, many share the qualities you see among typical GSC students: working adults who

need flexibility so they can incorporate college into their already full set of responsibilities. This connection makes GSC an especially good home for nurses.

We sat down with a few of our busy nurses to learn more about their journey and experience in the R.N. to B.S.N. program at Granite State.

Laurel Corson, R.N.Long-term Care

Loretta: I became a nurse because of my children. My son was delivered by two nurses. The doctor was not able to get there in time and it made me want to make this my career.

Cheryl: I already had a great career in the insurance industry. When a family member was diagnosed with cancer, I did a lot of caretaking. During this time, a nurse actually told me that I should consider nursing. Originally, I thought I was too old to do this but I went to school at night and worked full-time while taking care of my two kids and got my associate.

Laurel: I started out as a candy striper at Concord Hospital. I now work in long-term care at a nursing home. Not only do I enjoy helping the elderly get well, but to help them transition when it’s their time to leave. It’s a beautiful thing. People ask, “how can you do this?” You don’t know what a relief it is to some families to have somebody there. It means a lot to them.

Lisa: When I was 14 or 15, my grandmother spent a lot of time in the hospital and I was by her side. I saw these nurses taking care of her and I wanted to do that for somebody else.

Loretta: Most hospitals are looking for a bachelor’s degree and I just wanted to continue my education to further myself as a nurse.

Lisa: When I was younger, I opted to get my associate degree instead of my B.S.N. Years later, I wish I had made a different choice. Going back to school has always been in the back of my head. When I saw this opportunity, it was convenient and it was online, so I said why not? The timing was right.

Cheryl: Working in oncology, I saw good opportunities come my way that required at least a bachelor’s degree. I was fortunate enough to get the job I have now with the understanding that I would complete my B.S.N. within three years which I’m on target to do.

Laurel: I always wanted to go back and get my B.S.N. Because of life events, it just didn’t happen. Then my daughter, who is a GSC student, showed me information about the program. The only constant we have in life is change and that’s especially true for medical needs, so the B.S.N. is important.

Cheryl: It’s not geared just toward distance learners. We are practicing nurses who don’t want to earn the degree just to say that they have one. This is enhancing our current position and the level of care we provide in our roles as nurses. I think that says a lot about the program.

Laurel: One of the important parts of being a nurse is being able to practice autonomy. The online courses have allowed me to be autonomous in my home life, work life, and in school while having the support of the faculty.

Lisa: I’m a working mom. I have two kids and a husband. I have responsibilities and if I had to put one more thing on my plate, I wouldn’t have done it. Having the flexibility, not to have to go to a class at a certain time, and being able to do it on my schedule meant everything to me.

Loretta: I love this program because I can do it while I’m working. It gives me the flexibility. The fact there are four semesters in a year helps, too. You can get through the program quicker, which is great. I love it and I really enjoy it.
