His passion has always been for the work in Intensive Care. He is remembered for his patience and quiet gentleness which were part of the care he gave. Not only is Dr. Armanious known for his exceptional standards of care, but also for his lobbying for the needs of the Intensive Care Unit; from the first upgrades to the old Intensive Care Unit, to the new Polson Tower unit in 2011. In celebration of his retirement, retired ICU Unit Clerk, Bernie Johnson organized a reception for Dr. Armanious on October 24th. When asked why she felt a need to do this for him, her answer was simple “I did it because he is such an icon; always the go to person. Being a doctor was a calling for him. He was “old school”; never judgmental and handled everything with grace.” Others must have felt the same way too, as the room at the Schubert Cen- tre was filled with physicians, nurses and other health care professionals, retired and prac- ticing. They all came to recognize Dr. Armanious’ exceptional contri- bution to Vernon Jubilee Hospital. Retired nurse, Myrna Isobe, who worked at the Hospital from 1979 2012 shared “I came be- cause Dr. Armani- ous deserves to be recognized. He has given more than 33 years. Though always soft spoken, we listened hard. We knew that the wheels were always turning, he was thinking and problem solving.” Others compared him to the fictional Dr. House. His ability to teach others and to solve problems made him VJH’s “Dr. House”. Dr. Jan Splawinski remarked, “I recall a time when Dr. Stephen Friesen had a difficult case and he didn’t know what to do. He said I’ll call Dr. Armanious for his opinion.” RN, Doreen Blackwood said that Dr. Armanious was a lot like the Dr. House character, but she emphasized “just the good part of Dr. House.” Vernon Jubilee Hospital Foundation Newsletter 2101 - 32 nd Street, Vernon, BC V1T 5L2 Phone: 250-558-1362 • Fax: 250-558-4133 • email: [email protected] • web site: www.vjhfoundation.org Dr. Finley Armanious Reception organizer, Bernie Johnson welcomes Dr. Finley Armanious while daughter, Miriam King, watching on in the background as Wendy Edgelow pins on a boutonniere. The first Light a Bulb campaign was launched back in December of 1988, when the Hospital was a very different place. At that time, new technology had rapidly replaced the obsolete ICU heart monitors that were purchased back in 1974. Funds raised through the “Close to the Heart” Campaign, launched in 1988, purchased a completely new $235,000 critical care heart monitoring system for ICU. As part of that campaign, the Foundation Board decided to do a “Light a Bulb” promotion. For each $20 donated a Christmas bulb was lit on a tree located on the highway outside the hospital. And so began the annual Light A Bulb tradition. Over its 25 year history, Light a Bulb has raised over $3,100,000 and all of these funds have purchased medical equipment for use at Vernon Jubilee Hospital. Equipment has included a microscope, CT Scanner, Cardiac Stress Testing equipment, ventilators, an operating table, an Anaesthesia machine, birthing beds, a Holmiun laser, endoscopes, arthroscopic video cameras, cardiac monitors, IV pumps, and ENT Navigation system. The list goes on and on. This year, VJHF is asking the community to support it’s Silver Anniversary campaign. 2012 Campaign chairperson, Dr. Michael Concannon announced that a $200,000 goal has been set to purchase high definition cameras for endoscopic surgeries and a video colposcopy system supporting women’s cervical health. Third Annual Charity Classic Supported Cancer Centre Expansion

$126,000 was raised at the two day event held on August 11 & 12th at Predator Ridge. This could only have happened thanks to the generosity of sponsors, gala attendees and golf participants. Adding these funds to those raised through the Mc-Mur tr y-Baerg

Cancer Centre campaign, VJHF was able to reach its $500,000 goal to cover the full costs for the Cancer Centre expansion.

The event, in its third year, just continues to get better. The Saturday night gala, with its gourmet dinner, live and silent auction, added a new twist this year. Attendees were asked to support the Cancer Patient Comfort Fund. With the high costs of some of the cancer drugs, child care and any number of other unexpected expenses, some patients need nancial assistance during their dif cult treatment

journey. Over $10,000 was raised for the fund that will assist many local cancer patients.

On Sunday, 132 golfers teed off and enjoyed a Vegas Scramble in the warm August sunshine. Hole sponsors brightened up the course with their decorations, refreshments and fun & games. A very full day closed with a BBQ dinner and a $10,000 plus prize

table. Plans are already under way for the next Charity Classic event on May 26, 2013.

McMurtry-Baerg Cancer Centre Expansion nearing completion

The fundraising campaign to raise the nearly $500,000 needed to expand and renovate the McMurtry-Baerg Cancer Centre is complete. With no funding available from either the Ministry of Health, BC Cancer Agency or Interior Health, Vernon Jubilee Hospital Foundation found the nancial resources to fund the project. Thanks to the generosity of local donors, the renovated

and expanded Cancer Centre is nearing completion.

Oncologist, Dr. Ed Hardy shared that he anticipates the opening date for the Cancer Centre to be January 2013. Doubling the space will allow for additional rooms for examinations and consultations. With a vastly improved environment, the McMurtry-Baerg Cancer Centre staff is looking forward to caring for patients with enhanced privacy in the new year. This will go a long way to improving the dif cult journey that a cancer patient must take during the course of treatments.

2012 DO IT FOR DAD …Does It AgainIt was a great success raising $32,000, a new record! Since 2003, DIFD has raised $250,000. Honorary Chair, Dr April Sanders, was pleased with the turn out and the community support this past Father’s Day. Under sunny skies, over 500 participants & volunteers came together to

raise funds for prostate cancer awareness, testing and treatment.

This year the Prostate Cancer Support & Awareness group’s goal, under the leadership of Ken Waldon, was to raise funds to purchase a Resectoscope used by Urologists for the treatment of prostate cancer at Vernon Jubilee Hospital. Thanks to the generosity of the Do It For Dad sponsors and participants, Operating Room # 7, dedicated to Urology, has a new Resectoscope at the ready!
