language of music and an essential part

of musical education. The Conservatory

Students wanting to write RCM exams

must register directly with RCM. Writing

RCM exams is optional.

Individual Instruction Learning to play an instrument is one of

the greatest gifts you can give yourself

or your child. the conservatory of

Performing Arts has been offering high

quality music instruction in Regina for

100 years. From voice to violin, music

lessons teach more than just tunes.

Our instructors are among the best

in the country. Many hold university

degrees and perform with the Regina

Symphony Orchestra as well as their own

groups and ensembles. Most importantly,

Conservatory instructors nurture and

develop students to their highest

potential.

the right Age

Quite often, we are asked what the ‘ideal

age’ is for beginning music lessons. The

answer is any age can be the right age to

begin. It really depends on the child and

the instrument chosen. String lessons

often begin with students as young as

four, with active parental involvement.

Piano lessons can begin as soon as the

child is tall enough to sit at the bench

and reach the keys, although beginning

around the age of six or seven is more

common.

Many students begin playing piano,

violin, cello and guitar at a young

age. As they grow older and develop

physically, they can begin to explore

other instruments. Often students begin

taking lessons on winds and brass

instruments to complement their school

band program.

Starting music lessons is a personal

decision for every family and depends on

the maturity, interest and motivation of

your child regardless of age.

esl homestay Program Bring a little culture into your home.

“We started hosting University of Regina ESL

students in 2000 when our children grew up and

started to move away. It is a source of delight as

we make so many new friends. We have hosted a

number of students over the years, and each one

is different. Through the students, we learn about

their homes and cultures, and are able to show them

a little of our culture as well. We especially enjoy

having the opportunity to take them to see some of

the more scenic parts of this beautiful country.”

homestay hosts

For more information about how you can become a Homestay host, call

306-585-4896, email [email protected] or visit www.uregina.ca/esl.

The University of Regina provides a well developed and highly successful English as a

Second Language (ESL) Program for international students and new Canadians who

want to develop and improve their English language skills in preparation for university

admission, further their individual career and educational goals, or transition more

quickly into an English speaking culture.

Our instructors are highly trained and student focused. They provide top language

training and give students the attention and support they need to be successful in the

ESL Program.

The regular ESL Program runs for 13 weeks in three semesters per year. Students

receive 252 hours per semester consisting of core curriculum and skills instruction.

Core courses are organized according to language ability level. Students learn

listening, speaking, reading and writing skills through a theme-based integrated

curriculum. Classes are held on campus with an average class size of 16 students.

ESL students have their own computer lab with scheduled class time. Scholarships

and bursaries are available to students.

For program dates and fees, visit www.uregina.ca/esl.

“Well I am down to my final class after taking three

years of night classes to obtain a Business Certificate

and let me tell you how excited and happy I feel of

what I accomplished. I came into University thinking

it was going to be too hard and not flexible enough.

I was wrong. My experience with Continuing Educa-

tion was fantastic. I got all the classes I needed at the

times that worked for me. I had amazing professors

throughout my whole time in school. I think they leave the best profs for night

classes. I have gained so much knowledge and experience through Continuing Edu-

cation that my experience has spread to friends and family who have now enrolled

themselves into university via Continuing Education. I feel I am a role model to

those that think they can’t go back to school. Anyone can do it, you just need to tell

yourself that you can...I did and I don’t regret anything I ever did.

Thank you Continuing Education.”
