Studies suggest that the three components, catechins, caffeine, and theanine found in green tea, can pro-mote fat loss. They do this by inhibit-ing both gastric and pancreatic lipase, the enzymes that digest triglycerides and fatty acid synthetase, the enzyme responsible for synthesizing fatty acids into the form in which they can be stored in the body’s fat cells. Basically,

green tea discourages fat storage. In fact, The University of Chicago’s Tang Center for Herbal Medical Research shows green tea reduces the fat de-posits under your skin and the fat in your belly area. Additionally, Dr. Nich-olas Perricone told Oprah Winfrey she could lose 10 lbs. in 4-6 weeks drinking green tea instead of coffee. Perhaps, the best news of all is, green tea is a natural fat-burner without the harmful side-effects experienced with traditional weight loss pills.

A SMARTER, LESS-EXPENSIVE CHOICE WITH COUNTLESS HEALTH BENEFITS CAN BE FOUND IN GREEN TEA.

Gardening is a fantastic exercise for the mind and body. Rolling up your sleeves and getting a little dirty can provide a much needed break from technological gadgets, which humans have a inite attention span for. Pulling weeds and perfecting pansies has therapeutic effects, allowing one to disconnect from the worries of the day. Not only is a little fresh air and sunshine great therapy for the soul, but it is a major calorie burning activity. Experts even claim that gardening helps allevi-ate depression symptoms, and some are using it as a sub-scribed treatment for their patients.

PREVENT CHILDHOOD OBESITYBy Nicole Carlson & Beth Hering

Childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years, according to the Center for Disease Control. Nearly 20 % of kids ages 6 to 11 are obese. Kids simply don’t get enough exercise, and teens spend almost 4 hours a day watching TV. Without help to control their weight, obese children are prime targets for a variety of health-related problems, including heart disease, diabetes, bone and joint problems, asthma and sleeping disorders.

How to Make a Difference• Don’t reward children with food. Candy and snacks as a reward encourage bad habits. Find other ways to celebrate Good behavior.• Practice what you preach. If you’re practicing healthy habits, it’s a lot easier to convince children to do the same. Incorporate healthy activities into the time you spend with children. Take walks, ride bikes, go swimming, garden or just play hide-and-seek outside. Everyone will beneit from the exercise and time together.• Limit TV, video game, and computer time.• Bring kid-friendly, healthy snacks to classroom parties and other events.• Sign the national petition calling for an end to childhood obesity discriminations and bullying. Forward the link to ive friends to encourage them too.

This year alone an estimated 200,000 women will

be diagnosed with breast cancer and nearly 40,000 of those

diagnosed will die.

Prevent Breast Cancer... BE PROACTIVE

A TOTAL OF 1 IN 8 WOMEN

BREAST CANCER DURING

THEIR LIFETIME; UNDER-

STANDING THE RISKS AND LIVING

A PROACTIVE LIFESTYLE MAY HELP

YOU FROM BEING ONE OF THEM.

ARE YOU AT RISK?Some of the known breast cancer

risk factors such as age, sex, and family history, you are simply powerless to change. According to statistics, being a woman over the age of 65 is perhaps the greatest risk factor. However, despite your age, sex, and genetics, you can be a responsible prevention advocate by taking the necessary measures to protect and monitor your health on a regular basis.

Here are the risks: Half of all women diagnosed are over

age 65. Early menstruation or late menopause Having had your irst child at an older

age or not having given birth at all Taking birth control pills for more than

ten years A personal history of breast cancer

orbenign breast disease. Dense breast tissue.Past radiation therapy to the breast or

chest area. A history of hormone treatments -

such as estrogen and progesterone, or gene changes.

Other risk factors are lifestyle related, and you have the power to change these.

Weight: Being obese or overweight Lack of physical activity A diet that is consistently high in

saturated fat Alcohol intake of more than two

drinks per day

PREVENTATIVE MEASURES Breast cancer screenings are still the

primary tool used for early detection. Mammography is an X-ray examination of the breast. It can detect cancer in the breast when it is quite small, long before it may be felt by an at home breast examination.. Approximately 85%-90% of all breast cancers are detectable by mammography. Early detection is the key to reducing mortality rates,.While mammography is the primary tool

used, there still exist some 10%-15% of breast cancers that are not visible on mammography; however, they can be felt by performing a physical examination of the breast. .Three things are needed for a thorough examination by your health care provider, palpation, visual inspection, and a mammogram. Typically, during a routine physical checkup, your gynecologist will conduct an examination of the breast. You should also do a palpation exam yourself on a regular basis.

The American Cancer Society (ACS) recommends a baseline mammogram for all women by age 40 and annual mammograms for women 40 and older for as long as they are in good health. A baseline mammogram at 35 years of age may be recommended by your doctor if you have “lumpy breasts” or breast symptoms, or are at high risk of developing breast cancer.

Do your part to prevent the possibility of developing breast cancer,. If you are currently at high risk, switch to a healthy lifestyle today and call your doctor now for your next breast exam--it could save your life!

beauty FEATURE

Simply Beautiful

SkinTHIS AGE OLD SKIN CARE METHOD IS SIMPLE, BUT THE BENEFITS ARE FAR BEYOND ORDINARY.

Your skin care routine is not complete without this easy step; not only does it stimulate the skin, but it eliminates toxins beneiting your overall health!

SKIN BRUSHING BENEFITS You brush your teeth, your brush your hair, why not brush

your skin? Dry skin brushing gets rid of dead skin cells, unclogs pores and promotes cell renewal. This age old practice also increases blood circulation which may reduce the appearance of cellulite by helping muscle tone and causing a more even distribution of fat deposits. It can also help alleviate stress as the brush glides along your skin stimulating nerve endings producing a rejuvenating effect.

One of the unique beneits of skin brushing is that it stimulates your lymphatic system. The lymphatic system does not have a pump, as your heart does. It needs active stimulation to encourage waste materials to exit the body. Dry brushing actually prompts the lymph canals to drain toxic mucoid matter into the colon, helping to purify your entire system. Some have reported that after several days of dry brushing they noticed gelatinous mucoid material in their stools.

GET STARTED NOWPurchase a long handled brush made from natural (not

synthetic) bristles. Perform skin brushing once per day just before you get in the shower. Begin the process by brushing your skin in long sweeping strokes starting from the bottom of your feet upwards. Always brush towards the heart. Brush several times in each area, overlapping as you go. Avoid sensitive skin areas, or brush more gently over tender areas.

If you want to maintain beautiful skin you have to get beneath the surface; that is what dry skin brushing does. This approach, when done regularly, can rejuvenate your entire body from the inside out, leaving you with a radiant glow.

cover story GET INSPIRED

It’s 6 a.m. the alarm clock rings, Mary does not want to get up, but she does. She brushes her teeth, washes her face, laces up

her worn tennis shoes and heads out her front door. She stretches a minute to warm up her achy bones and then proceeds with a little piddle down the street. She is still half asleep as she turns the irst block, but just then she can feel her body getting warm, her blood begins to circulate through her veins. The cool breeze hits her hair, ah, she is invigorated; the road is hers for the taking. She accelerates a bit faster as she thinks, “this is why I woke up this morning.” She is absolutely in love with her morning run.

There are three reasons why Mary continues to lirt with itness. First, it makes her feel good. Second, it makes her feel young. Third, she cherishes the health beneits.

LOVE... FEELING GOOD Exercise makes you feel good

because it actually reduces stress. Not only is your body involved in exercise, but your brain is too. When you exercise, feel good chemicals that help ease stress and depression are released, mainly endorphins. Also, exercise is a positive distraction that can help take your mind off of worries, and who doesn’t have those? From a physical standpoint, your body temperature increases during exercise possibly producing calming effects that make you feel good. There are other psychological and emotional beneits too, such as improved conidence and self esteem. All around, from a mind and body prospective, exercise makes you feel darn good!

few stairs? Don’t sit back and let the aging process have its way with you. Here is a little secret; exercise just may be the elusive fountain of youth. Why? Because, it has the ability to help you stay younger longer! Stiff, achy joints, loss of stamina, loss of endurance and strength, are usually associated with a lack of regular physical activity. In other words, a sedentary lifestyle is hazardous to your health. You can stay feeling young and vigorous by maintaining your body with a regular itness routine. If you are not currently engaged in regular exercise, it is not too late! Muscle mass can increase at any age in response to exercise. The fact is, as a person ages, endurance, balance, lexibility, and strength naturally decline, but it accelerates at a rapid pace if we do not do anything to counteract those effects. If you use it, you won’t lose it...so start exercising now to feel younger!

LOVE... THE HEALTH BENEFITS You have heard it all before. You know that exercise is

good for you; but, this time, take a minute and really meditate on the beneits. Pause and imagine these beneits being part of your daily life. Imagine not being tired, sluggish, stressed, overwhelmed, or overweight. Imagine feeling great every day, having energy, feeling strong and conident. Imagine having excellent lexibility and stamina. Imagine keeping up with your kids, or grand kids. Those are the many beneits of exercise.

While you are engaging your imagination, imagine the vanity reasons for exercise (a strong motivator for most). A it person can go shopping and pick out clothes that it so nicely, they can tuck in their shirt and wear a belt, they can bare their nice arms in a muscle shirt, and, yes, they can wear a bathing suit proudly. Those are just a few added perks of being in shape.

If you have ever participated in an ongoing itness program, you have probably felt like Mary; you know how awesome it feels to be it! If you don’t feel that way right now or have never felt that way, why not join Mary now? Go ahead; get started today! Get started this Fall! Fall in love with itness and you too will love feeling good, love feeling young, and love feeling all the health beneits that a it lifestyle has to offer.

INSPIRE health TIPA well rounded itness routine will produce

the greatest results. Your routine should include these four things:

1. Aerobic (cardiovascular exercise)2. Anaerobic (strength training exercise)

3. Stretching4. Healthy diet

nutrition GET INSPIRED

Many Americans view lunch time as just another pesky task occupying space on their to-do list. In a time crunch, busy lunch goers

grasp their fork and begin hacking at their meal as though they are racing against an aggressive deadline.

So, what’s so wrong with gulping and gorging?... Everything!

Meal times are a primary way to relax, and rejuvenate. Essential for mind and body health, each and every meal deserves special care and attention.

3 GREAT REASONS TO BE A SLOW POKE EATER

1. Satisfaction Guaranteed Try doubling the time it takes to eat a meal; you really do have the time, you just need to prioritize. When you slow the pace of your lunch time meal, perhaps, not viewing your emails or taking calls, you will likely experience lavors, smells, and textures as never before.

Not only does eating too fast score a zero on the satisfaction scale, but you also mindlessly eat too much. If you eat slower and thoroughly savor the lavor, the full experience will last longer as you tease your tongue with each small, slow bite. Eating can be a very sensual experience when you take due time to engage all your senses. You will ind greater satisfaction from the irst non-rushed plate and won’t feel inclined to go back for second helpings.

2. Better Digestion The digestive process begins in the mouth as saliva marries with food and starts the breakdown. Chewing your food thoroughly promotes smooth and

SLOW DOWN YOUR CHOW DOWN...the WAIT loss method

complete digestion, whereas gulping and gorging often lead to unpleasant heart burn. Furthermore, poor digestion inhibits the absorption of important vitamins, minerals, and amino acids needed for optimal health.

3. Weight LossIt takes the brain about 15-20 minutes

to start signaling feelings of fullness. The majority of Americans completely inish their meal within that time frame and begin looking for dessert before they even realize they are really full. Mindless eating may cause you to indulge in more calories at each meal, whereas, eating at a slower pace allows you to become full as you eat, giving you more control over your appetite. When you are fuller sooner, you will eat fewer calories and avoid weight gain.

TRY THESE GO SLOW TIPS:

Mindful Eating Exercise Serve yourself a smaller

portion than you normally would. Before you dive in,

take time to smell your food. Pause, look at

each item on your plate; let the saliva begin to accumulate in your mouth even before the fork touches your tongue. Take your irst bite, chew the food completely. When you think you

have chewed enough, continue chewing. Try

to liquefy the food in your mouth as though

your teeth were a high grade blender; then swallow.

Practice putting your fork down between bites. Fight the urge to talk on

your phone or text while eating. Savor each and every bite; relax and enjoy the complete experience.

Crack open a clove of garlic and unleash the beneits that millions of people are already experiencing-- a healthy heart and a happy smile!

Fresh crushed garlic is rich in hydrogen sulide which relaxes blood vessels, allowing increased blood circulation. And that’s not all. A new study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry reports that garlic oil improves antioxidant enzyme expression, lowers heart inlammation and stops cell death, effectively maintaining the integrity of vital heart tissue. The study also highlighted that over 20 different substances in garlic oil provide therapeutic beneits. Adding a clove a day to your daily diet is an almost effortless way to nourish your hard-working heart.

Something to Smile AboutWhile studying the effects of garlic on the cardiovascular

system, scientists reported another wonderful beneit--patients experienced an elevated mood. This makes sense, since garlic is rich in selenium-- a known mood booster. In comparison, the opposite is true, individuals with a selenium deiciency tend to be more irritable, experience greater depression and are more hostile. On a happier note, garlic consumption may also help to regulate the number of fat cells that get formed in the body. It seems to normalize the metabolism and also detoxify the body’s systems by binding to heavy metals and other harmful pollutants and destroying them-- a toxin scavenger.

Garlic has too many beneits to pass up, and if you have an aversion to its odor, garlic capsules are available. However, fresh is always best; a freshly cracked clove will ensure greater beneits. Chop it up and toss onto a garden salad, add it to cold dips and salsas, or throw a half to a whole clove in a smoothie--it adds a punch of lavor. A clove a day will have you smiling and feeling healthier in no time.

What you need:§ 1 large sweet potato chopped into one inch cubes § 1 small purple onion quartered (remove skin)§ 6 cloves of garlic (cut tips, leave skin on)§ 1 eggplant cut length wise into one inch sticks (leave skin on)§ 1 red bell pepper cut in slices

Do you want to boost your mood and improve heart health?

§ 2 sprigs of rosemary§ Salt and Pepper § 2 Tbsp. of olive oil § 3 1/2 cups of vegetable broth

What you do:Spray a large baking pan with non-stick spray. After

prepping all vegetables as directed above, scatter them evenly on the pan. Drizzle olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper; cut rosemary sprigs with kitchen shears and spread evenly over veggies. Roast veggies for 20 minutes in a 350 degree oven then lip them over and toss to make sure they are coated with the olive oil. Continue roasting for another 20-25 minutes or just until the sweet potatoes have softened.

Once veggies are cooked, remove the skin from the garlic. Add all veggies to a Dutch oven, add vegetable broth, bring to a boil, reduce heat and use a hand blender to puree the soup to a creamy texture. If you don’t have a hand held blender you can use a regular blender, just add veggies to the pitcher and pulse until well blended. Add salt and pepper to taste.

TV VIEWING can shorten your life

A new study of young children found that with each hour of televi-sion watched, children’s waistlines grow larger and their muscular itness gets weaker. It also found that TV shortens life by 22 minutes per viewing hour. On the other hand, sitting less than 3 hours each day may tack 2 more years onto your life. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends limiting children’s total media time to no more than two hours of quality programming each day. MATH JITTERSAccording to a new report featured in the journal Behavioral and Brain Functions, many school-age children feel anxious in math-ematics. However, while anxiety can impact the performance of both boys and girls, it is generally girls who tend to suffer more anxiety than boys.

Weight gain and VITAMIN D LEVELSFemales aged 65 or more with low Vitamin D levels are more likely to gain weight than their counterparts with adequate levels, research-ers from the Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research in Portland, Oregon, reported in the Journal of Women’s Health.

you’re after, avoid products with alcohol, as they can leave your skin feeling tight, itchy, and irritated. Your face may be left looking older because it is far less hydrated and this will not help with the appearance of ine lines or deep wrinkles.

HUMAN GROWTH HORMONEHGH has been shown to be

affective in treating wrinkles; however, experts say it may contribute to the development of diabetes. Trading in a minor problem for the possibility of a major one, is probably not a good idea.

Avoid these three harmful ingredients. Be observant, read ingredient labels, and choose products with only natural ingredients.

Editor’s pick: I use Tree of Life Organic Coconut Oil (cold pressed) as a daily moisturizer. It nourishes my skin without leaving it greasy.

Coconut has been shown to help prevent sagging skin and age spots. As part of your night time routine, massage your face and neck with a small amount of fresh coconut oil. Your skin will feel soft and smooth, and there are no known side effects.

Wrinkles are both inevitable and continually occurring. Don’t get discouraged; with a little extra care on a regular basis, your skin can begin to look and feel younger. Take care of your skin from the inside out by taking preventive measures, eating a balanced diet, drinking an adequate amount of water and choosing an all-natural anti-wrinkle cream.

stories that INSPIRE

Glorianna Bourg is a busy wife and mother.

While she has always been health conscious, the goings

on of life and a busy schedule began to detract her from

her itness routine and sensible diet. As happens to many people, one pound turns into two and extra weight

begins to accumulate.

HER INSPIRATION: Glorianna being the devoted mother that she is made up her mind to be her healthiest so she can keep up with her ive year old son. She wanted to encourage health in her family by not only saying it but doing it herself.

HER PLAN: She used portion control as her tool of choice and carefully planned her meals to include fruits, veggies and whole grains. She found a new love for running and each day she would run alongside her son as he rode his bike.

HER RESULTS: Despite her busy life and a thyroid disorder, Glorianna lost forty pounds within 5 short months. She looks and feels amazing. Now she wears size 6 jeans instead of size 12, and she runs miles a day while her son bikes beside her. Glorianna’s story is not uncommon. When you make up your mind, have a clear goal in mind and consistently stick to it; you can accomplish anything!

HEALTHY HUMORIf you eat something withcalories but no one sees you,it’s calorie-free, right?

The U.S. Surgeon General recom-mends at least 150 minutes of aero-bic activity per week. That is only a littttle over 20 minutes each day. Try buying out time from other activities. For example, on average Americans spend 2.8 hours watching T.V. each day. If you can’t miss a T.V. program, try multitasking by exercising while watching T.V.

BUT…I don’t have time to exercise.

Your Needs

As the battle against the bulge rages on, Del Rioans are inding new ways to get into or keep in shape.

City leaders have done their part in recent years, constructing a hike and bike trail near San Felipe Creek, add-ing an exercise trail along Kings Way and creating a walking track at the popular Agarita Park.

And there are indoor itness options, too.

The Edge Health and Fitness Club, 2210 Dodson Avenue, offers not only individual machines that allow users to work out at their own pace and on their own time, but it also offers a variety of classes, from spin classes to Zumba to mixed martial arts training, that will get the blood pumping and give users the workout they desire.

Several facilities in the area of-fer crossit, the intensity exercise designed to strengthen and tone the body while improving overall physical health.

Core Fitness, 401 S. Main, has a wide variety of classes to suit your needs and schedule, from yoga/Pilates to tai chi and Zumba as well as aerobics and much more. The new itness cen-ter features a special loor designed for safety and comfort.

If you’re looking to tone up or are in-terested in dancing away those extra pounds, the B-Fit Club, located at 300 Margaret Lane, offers classes that may be what you’re looking for.

Regardless of whichever exercise path you choose, the same advice applies – start slowly and build your way up.

“If you decided to take up walking or running, start slow and progress from there instead of trying to go out and do it all at one time,” said Alan Davis, an athletic trainer at Del Rio High School with 19 years of experience as an athletic trainer. “Try and have a continuous walk or run for about 10 to 15 minutes.

“Remember, your body has to adjust.”
