The Tradition Continues

The Missourian Media Group will host The Bee, the fifth annual regional spelling competition, on Saturday, March 21, 2015, at East Central College. All schools in the area are invited each year to send their school spelling bee champion to compete in The Bee. The Missourian initiated The Bee in 2011 to offer students in grades four through eight incentives to hone their spelling skills, and to provide area schools an opportunity to advance a student to a regional competition at no cost to the school. We believe spelling will always be critical to good communication and the basis for sound reading skills. The Bee is just one way the Missourian Media Group is working to help raise readers in the areas we serve. The mission of our educational program is to engage young readers, building skills and connecting them to their communities, and to offer educators and parents resources to enrich the lives of their children. Tic-Tac-ToeDivide class into two teams. One will be “X” and one will be “O.” Draw a Tic-Tac-Toe grid on the board. Call the first person from each team to the board. They each pick a square; it can be the same square. Give them each a different spelling word. If they get it right, they get to make their mark, “X” or “O.” If they don’t get the word right they don’t make a mark. The Bee 2011 ChampionAshley Roberts

My parents were constantly reading me books and telling me stories when I was young. When I was about 8 years old, I had an electronic toy called a Spelling Ace that had all kinds of word games like Hangman and Anagrams on it.

I still love hearing stories, playing word games such as Words with Friends, and watching Wheel of Fortune. I learned German in high school, and I want to learn more languages in the future.

I did study the words for the spelling bee, but spelling has always come naturally to me. When I was preparing, I would picture words in my head. Even when I was just having a conversation, I would spell out words in my head when I thought or said them. If I came across a word that I didn’t know how to spell, I would make sure to learn it.

I am currently a senior at St. Francis Borgia, and I plan to go to University of Missouri this fall to study psychology and then go on to grad school and do neuroscience research.

invisible Man gameDivide the class into two teams. Draw two large “stick-type” figures on the board. Be sure to give each of them the same number of body parts. Draw 13 parts for each: two eyes, two ears, nose, mouth, head, hair, body, two arms, and two legs. Make one a girl and the other a boy (use different hair styles).

Start with team 1 and give the first person a spelling word. He must say-spell-say it. If he is correct, he gets to erase a body part from the opponents’ figure. Then move to the other team and repeat. If the word is not properly spelled, no part is erased. Keep going until one team has completely erased the other’s person — hence, the Invisible Man.

Use the news• Create a T-chart on notebook paper. Write 10 words from The Bee Word Study List down the first column. Using the newspaper, cut out a synonym for each word and paste it in the second column.

• Using at least five words from The Bee Word Study List, create a classified ad selling a product or service.

• Use a newspaper to cut out your spelling words or letters to make your words. Glue the words to a piece of paper.

• Cut pictures from the newspaper and write a story about the pic-tures using at least 10 words from The Bee Word Study List.

• Create a chart to categorize 10 words from The Bee Word Study Listaccording to the number of syl-lables. Then, cut 10 words from thenewspaper and paste them in the correct columns in the chart.

• Write the alphabet on a separate sheet of paper. Beside A, write $1.Beside B, write $2, and so on. Select 10 words from The Bee Word Study List and calculate how much each word is worth. Then, locate more words from the newspaper and calculate their worth. Paste a word from the newspaper beside each word from the Study List, then com-pare the two using the symbols: >, <, and =.
