eX FabulaEveryone has a story to tell, and this dynamic collaboration with Milwaukee-based Ex Fabula brings the power of storytelling to Sheboygan. Be a part of a fascinating community narrative this summer and fall as Ex Fabula’s founders host neighborhood story slams and invite participants to share moments from their lives. Anyone who can tell a true, five-minute story can participate. The saga concludes October 11–13 with an intergenerational storytelling spectacular at the Arts Center that will include live music by the band Count This Penny. Contact the Arts Center to find out how you can be involved.

encaustic Painting: imageRy in waX with saRah e. RehmeR—Ages 14–adultSaturday, September 29, 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Participants will explore encaustic painting using wax medium and paints (beeswax, dammar resin, and pigment). Techniques of image transfers, paper embedding, and mark making will be utilized to create a painting with visual depth, one of the most intriguing and special qualities of encaustic paint. Students will investigate the use of pastels and oil sticks to bring in washes of color between layers of wax. Participants should bring three laser prints or photocopies of an image to work with and any paper materials they would like to embed. All other materials will be supplied.

Trained as a graphic designer and photographer, artist Sarah E. Rehmer (IL) fell in love with the encaustic medium in 2005, combining it with an interest in old books and pages of text. Her work often deals with issues of memory loss and misplaced information. Her work has been shown throughout the Chicago area, including the Coalition gallery and the Noyes Cultural Center.

Tuition: $110 ($93 member)

metalsmithing: cReating a Family bRooch with maRcia goRRa-PateK—Ages 14–AdultSaturday and Sunday, November 10 and 11 10:00 a.m.–2:30 p.m. Since the beginning of time, people have found ways to preserve and honor family memories by marking the final resting place of a loved one, wearing a locket containing a lock of hair, or having a portrait painted. In this class, participants will create a brooch using a personal photographic image.

Participants will learn several metalsmithing skills: cold joining, sawing, texturing, filing, and etching nonferrous metals. Participants must purchase a supply kit that contains the materials (metals, findings, and some tools) needed to complete one brooch: $60 (basic) or $90 (complete). The complete kit enables more creative choices. After this workshop, participants will have a foundation of skills and tools with which to create additional metal pieces. Each student will need to bring one or more small (1- to 2-inch), high-quality photographs of family to be included in the brooch.

Well-known in the Milwaukee area as a metalsmith and jewelry designer, gorra-Patek has begun investigating drawing, pastels, painting with oils, and ceramics. She owned and operated a studio/gallery in Cedarburg and Mequon for nearly 20 years and has taught art courses for Concordia University, Milwaukee Institute of Art and design, and UW-Milwaukee. She has shown her work nationally and internationally. She currently teaches art at grafton High School.

Tuition: $120 ($102 member)Supply kit additional: $60 (basic) or $90 (complete)
