DIRECTIONS TO SWEETWATER: We’re conveniently located off Rte. 65 (Ohio River Blvd.) in Sewickley. Take Rte. 65 North. About two-and-one-half miles after going under the Interstate 79 overpass, the Sewickley Country Inn will be on the right, followed shortly by two stoplights. Turn right at the 2nd stoplight onto Broad Street. Sweetwater is on the right in the Old Post Office Building.

PARKING: Free parking is available in our lot located in the rear of the building, along both sides of Bank Street, and along the right side of Broad Street.

Sweetwater Center for the Arts is accessible to the physically disabled only on the upper and lower levels. Sweetwater’s gallery, located on the mezzanine, is not handicap accessible.

Basic techniques will be discussed and demonstrated and for those who already have experience working with clay, more advanced techniques in hand building, wheel throwing, surface effects and glaze treatments will be shared. PHOTOGRAPHYIntroduction to Digital Photography - PH01 Ages 18 & upThe world of digital photography is cutting edge, but is based on principles as old as the very first cameras themselves. This introductory class will help you navigate through the technological confusion to free you to take better pictures, download and organize them in your computer, and display your work with pride. This class emphasizes total work flow from creative ideas and composition all the way through software to final output. Class time is divided between lecture, demonstration, and critique, with the bulk of the shooting done outside of class. Students should bring a digital camera with them to class (a DSLR camera is recommended, but not essential).

Digital Photography Open Seminar - PH02 Ages 18 & upLove photography, but can’t seem to find the time? Do you need a classroom structure to help provide motivation? Well, you’re in luck! The Digital Photography Open Seminar is just what you need. This class provides the forum and the opportunity to work on personal projects and explore new ideas. The curriculum for this course will be based on the students’ needs and requests. Lessons and demonstrations come from your suggestions, and the bulk of the class will be dedicated to creating and critiquing work and sharing ideas with other students. The more you put into this class, the more you’ll get out of it. Basic digital photography knowledge recommended, but not required. Students should bring a digital camera with them to class.

Portrait Photography Workshop - PH03 Ages 16 & upThe secret to taking great “people pictures” is to observe your subjects, connect with them, and use your camera to its best advantage. This one-day workshop will help to guide you through improving your portraits, upgrading them from snapshots to something much, much more. We’ll discuss a number of very simple techniques in composition, camera placement, and both natural and artificial light to make your portraits improve significantly. The class will begin with lecture and will move to hands-on demonstration after the lunch break. There will be a break for lunch, so bring a bagged lunch or take a break in town. There are no prerequisites for this class, but basic a rudimentary understanding of photography is assumed. Students should bring a digital camera with them to class.

Cake Decorating - CC01 Ages 16 & upFor beginners and experienced bakers alike, this class will cover how to bake, torte and frost a cake, then decorate it with textures, borders and icing flowers. By the last class, you’ll design and create a final project of your own. This hands-on workshop is limited to eight students. A materials list will be distributed and explained on the first day of class.

Gourmet Cupcakes - CC02 Ages 16 & upWith designer cupcake boutiques taking over the country, come find out what all the fuss is about! Using basic cake and frosting recipes that you can alter to your taste, we’ll bake, fill and decorate a variety of cupcakes, ranging from creative and fun to deliciously gourmet. Bring your sweet tooth and a box to take home your own creations! Materials fee is included in the tuition. This hands-on workshop is limited to eight students.

During the class we’ll learn tips for offering an array of wines for a festive dinner party, from sparkling wines as guests arrive to appetizers and first course whites through main course reds, and finally dessert wines, either to accompany fruit tart or creme brulee or as a dessert in itself! We will showcase different grapes and regions in France, including Bordeaux, Burgundy, and the Loire Valley, as well as lesser known areas waiting to be discovered. Materials fee is included in the tuition.

Philip Real can be found regularly behind the wine bar at the Naked Grape bistro in Sewickley. He writes the Crush column for Table magazine. He ran Prelude Wine Bar at the Pittsburgh Renaissance Hotel, taught Wine Studies at the Pennsylvania Culinary Institute, and managed San Francisco wine shops.

Holiday Cookies - CC04 Ages 16 & upHave you always wanted to get beyond store-bought cookie dough or the standard chocolate chip? Just in time for the holidays, come learn to bake and decorate scrumptious cookies that are beautiful enough to give as gifts! From mixing the perfect dough to baking gourmet cookies that need no adornment, learn new tricks to take your baking skills to the next level. You’ll also try your hand at piping royal icing, and get to take your creations home--if you can resist long enough! Materials fee is included in the tuition. This hands-on workshop is limited to eight students.

JEWELRYMetalsmithing with Pat Falbo - TC01, TC02 Ages 16 & upStudents will be taught basic metal forming techniques as well as stone setting and design. Two projects will be completed: first, a simple hammered cuff bracelet with a stone setting; then a more intricate bracelet of the artist’s own design. The class will be able to study several of the artist’s own pieces, some of which have won recognition for unique design quality. Students will be taught how to order metal on the first day of class.

Metalsmithing with Adrienne Grafton - TC03 Ages 16 & upThis metalsmithing class will cover many metal fabrication techniques such as sawing, soldering, riveting, forming, and forging. Surface embellishment techniques such as hammer textures and stamping will also be introduced. These processes, along with each student’s personal ideas, will open the door to creating custom jewelry. Students of all skill levels are welcome. Students will be taught how to order metal on the first day of class.

PMC with Resin - TC04 Ages 16 & upBring on the color! Since metal clay takes texture so beautifully, it looks great as a base for media such as transparent resins. In the first two sessions, students will learn how to make a pure silver PMC pendant with a contemporary, walled design. The pieces will be fired and polished by the teacher before the third session, and then the gorgeous color begins! - with the application of easy-to-use, liquid epoxy resin. Students will also have the opportunity to play with resins in ready-made bezels such as bottle caps, with a variety of inclusions such as beads, spices, and paper imagery. All materials provided, but students are encouraged to bring additional items to play with during the third session. A $65 materials fee is payable to the instructor.

Wire Wrapping - TC05 Ages 16 & upCreate unique pieces of jewelry with this flexible, limitless medium in a fun classroom setting. Learn numerous techniques of wire-working and metal forming using sterling silver and copper wire. Students will design, shape, wrap and hammer wire into multiple pieces of jewelry. Projects include: wire rings, hammered links, earrings, wire cuffs and an elegant wire-wrapped cabochon pendant. Students of all levels of experience are welcome. Materials may be purchased from the instructor (approximately $35).

Watercolor - PA02 Ages 16 & upThis watercolor class will focus on the principles of controlled realism. Each class will begin with a short demonstration of the subject matter of the week. All levels of experience are welcome. Each student will receive individual attention and can work at his or her own pace. Please bring drawings and/or photographs of the subject you wish to paint and be prepared to have fun! A materials list will be sent at the time of registration.

Acrylic Painting - PA03 Ages 16 & upThis class will provide an introduction to the techniques and media of acrylic paints for beginners, as well as continue to develop the skills of the more advanced painter. Topics covered include: setting up a palette, mixing colors, creating washes, painting “alla prima” and glazing techniques. Students may choose to paint from photographs or still life objects brought to class, or are welcome to bring an on going painting project to continue to work on during class. The instructor will do demonstrations, provide one on one feedback, and guide group critiques. In class demonstrations will be of realistic painting techniques, although students are individually welcome to work on abstract or more graphic work if preferred. A materials list will be sent at the time of registration.

Oil Painting - PA04 Ages 16 & upStudents will study composition, color theory and will become familiar with the oil medium and materials. If you a beginner, the instructor will take you through your first painting step-by-step. If you have taken this course before, you will learn additional techniques and develop your own style while using the subject of your choice. Students will also have the opportunity to learn the instructor’s own impressionistic style and original technique of knife painting based on the generous application of buttery oils and their manipulation through rapid addition and subtraction of paint using knives and other tools. A materials list will be sent at the time of registration.

Kum Boo - TC06 Ages 16 & upIf you are interested in giving the surface of your silver jewelry that extra bling, then this workshop is for you! Students will learn the art of kum boo, a Korean surface embellishment technique that involves fusing 24K gold foil to a fine silver surface. Jewelry fabrication processes as well as the kum boo technique will be demonstrated. Students should bring 22 gauge sterling silver with which to fabricate. Gold foil may be purchased from the instructor on the first day of class for approximately $30 depending on usage and the current market rate of gold.

Holiday Bead-a-thon - TC07 Ages 6-11 with an adult OR ages 12 & upCombine beautiful beads, a few simple techniques, and a splash of fun and what do you get? Gorgeous holiday jewelry to wear or give proudly. Use quality beads from around the world to create necklaces, bracelets, earrings, photo holders, and more... the choice is yours! Holiday-themed and special beads and charms will be available. Tuition includes one individual only. Cost of materials depends on the type and number of projects completed, but will range from $7 to $30, payable to the instructor on the day of class.

Pastel Painting - PA05 Ages 16 & upWorking from still life as well as the model, we will explore various techniques using soft pastels that will make your paintings sing. Emphasis will be on color and the handling of materials. Beginners will receive introductory instruction on the medium while those who have taken this class before may work on individual projects if they wish. Demonstrations and individual instruction will be given. Model fee is included in the tuition. A materials list will be sent at the time of registration.

Learn to create more exciting paintings by combining spontaneity and basic technical skills. A different approach will be used in each class. Students will work at their own pace and will be encouraged to maintain personal expression, while applying the lesson of the day. A materials list will be sent at the time of registration.

Fall Foliage in Watercolor - PA07 Ages 16 & upCelebrate the beauty of the autumn season in this watercolor workshop focusing on the beautiful colors found in fall foliage. The instructor will demonstrate several techniques used to paint foliage (wet into wet, dry brushing, glazing of color), and students will learn better composition for their paintings using different perspectives from reference photos or live set-up. This workshop will be helpful for all students, beginners to advanced. There will be a break for lunch, so please bring a bagged lunch or take a break in town. A materials list will be sent at the time of registration.

Students will paint a still life in either oils or acrylics, and may choose their palette type. There will be a break for lunch, so bring a bagged lunch or take a break in town. Students should bring the following supplies with them to class: oil or acrylic paints, brushes of your choice, a tablet of canvas sheets (8” x 10” or 9” x 11”) and one canvas or gessoed masonite.

Acrylic “Monotype” Painting Workshop - PA09 Ages 16 & upThis acrylic painting technique uses matte and gloss mediums to produce bold layered images with slick glossy veneers, that make unique greeting cards or paintings. The instructor will guide students through this technique of layering acrylic paint and medium on a plastic surface and transferring it to a paper surface. Peeling the paper from the plastic to reveal the hidden painting is truly exciting! This technique is related to both reverse glass painting, and the process used in monotype printmaking. The instructor will do demonstrations and show examples in the first secession and guide students in setting up projects. Student will complete images on the second secession. This technique is particularly conducive to incorporating collage work and is great for using up favorite magazines images, envelopes, cards and extra colored paper. A materials list will be sent at the time of registration.

Light Bulb Insects – TC08 Ages 21 & upIn the Light Bulb Insects workshop, we’ll breathe new life into those colorful, old-fashioned Christmas bulbs as we transform them into a variety of insects like bees, butterflies and beetles. Shiny wire and sparkling beads will be used to jazz up our insect sculptures. We’ll even learn how to transform them into decorative ornaments that can be given to a friend or treasured as a keepsake. Materials fee is included in the tuition. BYOB.

Silk Scarf Painting – TC09 Ages 21 & upIn the Silk Scarf Painting workshop, you’ll create your own one of a kind silk scarf to complement a favorite outfit or to give as a gift. You’ll be guided through the process of creating a template and then adding a resist to allow your scarf to have a unique pattern or design. We’ll then apply vibrant fabric dyes to your scarf and learn how to add interesting texture and color mixing techniques. Materials fee is included in the tuition and covers the cost of a silk scarf. Pysanky Egg Ornaments - TC10 Ages 21 & upIn this workshop, we’ll discover the magic of making traditional Ukrainian Pysanky eggs. We’ll use real blown eggs, wax and rich dye baths to create unique and colorful patterns. Matting & Framing Techniques - DR03 Ages 16 & upDo you have a print that you want to frame? Do you love the look of professionally framed artwork, but hate the price? In this introductory workshop, students will learn the fundamentals of basic mat cutting and picture framing for home or professional presentation. You will receive a “hands on” education on how to properly cut mats, mount art and assemble a frame. Common questions about framing will be addressed such as framing standards, matting/framing design and selection, and conservation framing. You will learn a single mat, double mat, floating mat and a surprise contemporary alternative. By the end of class, students will learn how to get that professional look and pay half the price! Two professional mat cutting tools will be made available; however, students are encouraged to bring their own if available. Reiki: The Usui System of Natural HealingReiki is an ancient form of energy healing rediscovered in the 1920’s in Japan by Dr. Mikao Usui. The word “Rei-Ki” stands for “universal life force energy”. This is a nonsectarian and nondenominational healing art and it is available to people of all ages and backgrounds. Reiki is currently the most in-demand energy healing modality in the United States and around the world. It uses non-invasive gentle touch; accelerates the body’s natural healing processes; supports mental and emotional healing; and gives an overall sense of profound well-being. It is utilized in hospitals, hospices, spas, wellness centers and private settings. In order to learn Reiki one must receive a series of attunements from a Reiki Master.

Pre-School Holiday Ornaments in Clay - PS15 Ages 4-6Brighten your home during the holiday season with hand-made, one-of-a-kind ornaments! In the first class, students will use cookie cutters and other techniques (all fun winter shapes like snowmen, gifts and Christmas trees!) to form their ornaments in clay. The second class allows students the chance to decorate their clay creations, through the use of under-glazes, surface treatments and acrylic paint finishes. Mona - CH07 Ages 6-10In this workshop, children will borrow the model “Mona Lisa” from the Renaissance Artist/Inventor, Leonardo DaVinci and will create a whole new makeover for this timeless beauty. Painting With Gold - CH08 Ages 6-10Gustav Klimt was a prominent Austrian painter who significantly influenced the Art Nouveau movement. Klimt’s well-known works are distinctively recognizable through his use of adorning gold-leaf decoration and the repetition of geometric symbols, spirals and swirls. Klimt was heavily influenced by Byzantine and Minoan icons, mosaics and frescoes. In his paintings, Klimt created an isolated world for his subjects, much like his own reality. Students will use magazines, brilliant gold leaf, and colorful palettes to create a figurative iconic painting similar to the style of Gustav Klimt. Materials fee is included in the tuition.

Mosaic Memories - CH09 Ages 6-10What better way to capture a special memory than in a unique homemade picture frame! The Rhythm of Romare – CH27 African American artist Romare Bearden created exciting collages that told stories of the music, memories, people, and city life around him. You are invited to create a collage inspired by Romare Bearden using materials like watercolors, colored paper, sheet music and magazines. To inspire rhythm in our collages, we’ll listen to jazz music as we learn various collage techniques like layering, overlapping, and composition. This exhibition will present a variety of interpretations of what “My Place” may be and may mean to the artists. This could be simply the immediate environment where they live, country or city; something more intimate as their home; or the identity of space, whether real or just imaginary. The artwork may also focus on expressing feelings and emotions the artist may have towards this “place.” Where am I now? What place am I longing for? In that place, will I find comfort? The artists will give the viewer an opportunity to see through their work the way that they “see” their place.

This exhibition is juried by Barbara Westman. Westman has been a resident of Pennsylvania since 2002 when she moved from Poland. She obtained her dual MFA in Fiber Art and Printmaking at The Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan, Poland. Since her arrival to the US she has been dividing her time between teaching and working on her own art. She evenly enjoys fiber art and printmaking. Westman’s interests are in textures and structures, whether natural or man-made. Her observation and interpretation of both is presented in her prints and fiber art works. Currently Barbara Westman is an Assistant Professor of Fiber Art and Printmaking at Slippery Rock University. Over the years she participated in numerous national and international art exhibits.

September 2011-September 2012 marks artist Romare Bearden’s centennial year. During his time he achieved recognition for his complex semiabstract collages of photographs and painted paper on canvas. The narrative structure of his work depicts African American culture, including ritual, music, and family as his predominant themes. By the 1960s Bearden was recognized as the preeminent collagist in the U.S. He is regarded as one of the most important American artists of the 20th century. Romare Bearden spent some time in Pittsburgh and went to high school at Peabody. A large part of his work was inspired by his time in Pittsburgh. Bearden also had a reputation and several endeavors to inspire and promote other African American and younger artists, namely The Studio Museum of Harlem and Cinque Gallery, both in New York City.

The show is titled Stacks based on Bearden’s reflections on the influence the smokestacks of Pittsburgh had on his work. Thinking about the idea of stacks as layers, Bearden created work in a collage aesthetic and used color and space all in stacks. Stacks also refers to artistic influence. As artists we stack ideas, techniques and environments. One artist influences another in stacks. Artists including Christiane Leach, Staycee Pearl, Blaine Siegel, and Brett Wormsley share their Bearden inspirations in various ways in this exhibition. Stacks is curated by Alisha Wormsley, a resident and teaching artist for many cultural institutions including The Romare Bearden Foundation.

Thinking about the idea of stacks as layers, Bearden created work in a collage aesthetic and used color and space all in stacks. Stacks also refers to artistic influence. As artists we stack ideas, techniques and environments. One artist influences another in stacks. Artists including Christiane Leach, Staycee Pearl, Blaine Siegel, and Brett Wormsley share their Bearden inspirations in various ways in this exhibition. The Babatunde Lea Quartet PerformanceSaturday, October 1, 2011, 2:00 p.m. (following the African American Heritage Day Parade in Downtown Pittsburgh)“Jazz steeped in the rhythms of the African Diaspora!” Babatunde Lea’s music is influenced by the many African drumming/cultural experiences that he has had throughout his lifetime. His music is also inspired by the likes of Pharaoh Sanders, McCoy Tyner, Leon Thomas and Randy Weston, just to name a few. One of Babatunde’s biggest influences was Babatunde Olatunji, when he saw him at a concert in NYC/Cooper Union University in 1959. That performance is what let Babatunde Lea know that he was and is a drummer!

One of only two major arts institutions in the world named for Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning playwright and Pittsburgh native August Wilson, the August Wilson Center for African American Culture engages regional and national audiences in its mission of preserving, presenting, interpreting, celebrating and shaping the art, culture and history of African Americans in Western Pennsylvania and people of African descent throughout the world. FREE MAVUNO Children’s Workshop: The Rhythm of Romare – CH27 Ages 6-10 African American artist Romare Bearden created exciting collages that told stories of the music, memories, people, and city life around him. You are invited to create a collage inspired by Romare Bearden using materials like watercolors, colored paper, sheet music and magazines. Formed as a project of the River City Brass Band, the PGC is intended to catalyze connections among participants of all races, ethnicities and ages while acting as a conduit for the preservation of the rich history of gospel music through its performances of both traditional and new works in the genre. FIELD TRIPSInterested in learning more about art? Come to Sweetwater for a field trip! Sweetwater offers a variety of field trips for area pre-schools, elementary schools, middle schools and high schools. This is a great opportunity for children and young adults to be exposed to the world of art through their local art center. Field trips include a workshop with a Sweetwater instructor and a tour of the Center. Prices start at $5.00 per child and are dependent on the type of workshop chosen. PRIVATE ART LESSONS Private art lessons are available for Sweetwater members only (ages 6-adult) in a variety of art media. Private art lessons are $50/hour, and each lesson has a 1 ½ hour minimum. Receive a discounted rate of $35/hour when you register for a total of 6 or more hours at one time. There may be additional fees for materials. Full payment must accompany registration. In the event that the student must cancel a scheduled lesson, he/she should notify the office by calling 412-741-4405. Sweetwater is the perfect place for birthday parties!

We supply the space, the kitchen and the ENTERTAINMENT! Choose between a variety of predesigned themes, or create your own theme! Parties are “hosted” by veteran instructors who are sure to keep your party-goers amused.

Parties may include up to 15 children (additional fee for each child over the limit--up to 20 children max). Each party will last two hours and will allow approximately 45 minutes for opening presents and refreshments. Parents provide refreshments, decorations, set-up and clean-up.

CLASS REGISTRATION: Register for fall 2011 classes before September 9, 2011 and receive 10% off the tuition. Use coupon code sum-mer11early10 when registering online. Excludes private music lessons and private art lessons. Sweetwater does not offer reimbursement if coupon code is not used at the time of registration.

ONLINE: Students are now able to register for classes online at www.SweetwaterArtCenter.org. Please see page 2 of this catalog for instructions on setting up an online account.

BY MAIL: Return the completed registration form to: Sweetwater Center for the Arts, 200 Broad Street, Sewickley, PA 15143. Make checks payable to Sweetwater or fill out the credit card information on the registration form. Please include expiration date. Classes are filled in the order registrations are received. Students who register by mail should assume acceptance unless otherwise notified. We do not send a confirmation letter. It is the responsibility of the student to appear in class on the correct day and time without additional notice.

BY PHONE: You may register by phone only if you will be paying by credit card. We accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express.

IN PERSON: You may register in person at the Sweetwater office. Please see page 1 for building hours.

TRANSFER POLICY: Students may transfer without any charge from one class to another before either class has met twice. A transfer may be made by calling Sweetwater. Transfers may be made only within the same term. No transfers will be accepted once the second class begins.

LATE REGISTRATIONS: Students may register for any class, space permitting, before the second class. However, class fees are not pro-rated, and cancellation decisions are made 2 days prior to the start date.

MEMBERSHIP: Cost of a membership is $45 for an individual and $70 for a family. This membership is good for one full calendar year from the date that you apply for the membership. Family memberships apply to immediate family members only. Memberships are non-refundable.

MATERIALS: All materials, unless otherwise noted, will be supplied by students at their own expense. A list of necessary materials will be provided at the time of registration or will be provided by the faculty at the first class.

SWEETWATER COURSE POLICY: Sweetwater makes every effort to maintain the schedule of courses as indicated in the catalogue. How-ever, we reserve the right to cancel courses, change instructors, and combine classes when necessary without prior notification.

CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS: Sweetwater does not offer make-up classes or tuition reimbursement for student absenteeism. Sweet-water does not prorate tuition for classes that the student cannot attend.

If Sweetwater must cancel a class due to insufficient enrollment, registered students will be notified 2 days before the start date, and tuition will be reimbursed within 30 days of notification. If the student must cancel his/her enrollment in a course, the following cancel-lation policy will apply:

Class cancellations must be made at least 3 business days prior to the start date of class. Students may receive a partial refund ($20 cancellation fee will be applied) OR a credit voucher in the full amount if they cancel no less than 3 business days before the class start date. No refunds or credit vouchers will be given without 3 business days notice. Credit vouchers are non-transferable between students.

CHILD DROP-OFF AND DISMISSAL POLICY: The following policy applies to children enrolled in pre-school, children’s, and teen classes (Ages 3-15). In order to keep your child safe, please escort him/her to class every day. If anyone other than yourself is to pick your child up, please write a note and give it to the instructor at class. If you give your child permission to walk home or to meet you outside after class, then you must write a note stating this and give it to the instructor.

POTTERY STUDIO FIRING/GLAZING FEE: Due to the increasing cost to Sweetwater to fire the work of those who are NOT enrolled in a class but who wish to rent our studio and work independently, a firing/glazing fee of $15 will be charged at the time you purchase your clay. Students who are enrolled in a class, have paid their material fee and wish to work on their projects on their own time are exempt from the firing/glazing fee.

DISCARDED ARTWORK: Sweetwater is not responsible for student artwork left behind at the Center after the completion of a class.

TRANSFER POLICY: Students may transfer without any charge from one class to another before either class has met twice. A transfer may be made by calling Sweetwater. Transfers may be made only within the same term. No transfers will be accepted once the second class begins.CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS: Sweetwater does not offer make-up classes or tuition reimbursement for student absenteeism. Sweetwater does not prorate tuition for classes that the student cannot attend. Class cancellations must be made at least 3 business days prior to the start date of the class. Students may receive a partial refund (a $20 cancellation fee will be applied) OR a credit voucher in the full amount if they cancel no less than 3 business days before the class start date. No refunds or credit vouchers will be given without 3 business days notice. Credit vouch-ers are non-transferable between students.
