Dear Friends,

As I begin my second year as President of the United Jewish Fund and Council (UJFC), I’m happy to report that we had many successes last year. Despite continuing economic challenges, our 2011 Annual Campaign was even with last year, raising $2.3 million. Through careful staff restructuring and an extremely favorable lease renewal, we reduced the UJFC operating budget over the last two years by $120,000. These achievements have positioned us well to maintain our support for our Jewish community locally, in Israel and in 70 countries around the world.

These figures translate into powerful real-life stories of caring for people in need and nurturing our Jewish community. This year, we were able to increase allocations to seven of our beneficiary agencies working locally and abroad. We made a first-time allocation to Nechama, the locally based Jewish disaster response organization. We provided scholarships for 45 local children to attend Jewish residential summer camp and for three teens to go to Israel. We were also able to make a special allocation to help reunify 8,500 Ethiopian Jews with their families in Israel.

We spearheaded a Jewish Education Collaboration Initiative, which brought together our community agencies and synagogues to explore new ways of working together to offer our children the best possible Jewish education.

One of the most amazing events of the year was our community ‘Walk for Israel’ celebration. What nachas to see more than 700 people proudly marching in the streets of St. Paul carrying our community’s banner for Israel!

We continue to support the vital missions of our “Bi-Cities” agencies, the Jewish Community Relations Council, Hillel, the Minnesota Jewish Historical Society and Sholom.

UJFC’s success is due to the generosity of the St Paul Jewish community and the devotion of our volunteers and communal professionals. More than 150 volunteers worked on the campaign this year, and more than 1,300 people donated to the 2011 Annual Campaign. Thank you to each and every one of you for your support and investment in our community.

We will do more great things in the coming year – and the need is still very real. We have a fantastic 2012 Annual Campaign team led by Charlie Nauen, General Campaign Chair, Michelle Shaller, Women’s Philanthropy Chair and Jerry Helfand, Men’s Campaign Chair. They work with a dedicated group of volunteers who give freely of their time to make the campaign a success.

We truly have something special here in St. Paul. A warm, welcoming, hamish community. Please, answer the call and give generously when a volunteer contacts you. Every pledge makes a difference in someone’s life and contributes to the quality of Jewish life in our community.

L’Shanah Tovah,

Jon Parritz, UJFC President

Facing a divorce Jenny (not her real name) wanted to make sure her two young children had as much stability as possible. She knew that a significant source of security for them was the childcare program at the St. Paul JCC. However, she wasn’t certain they could remain given her family’s new economic reality.

The St. Paul JCC was able to provide scholarship money for Jenny’s children to remain in the program. The following excerpt is from a letter from Jenny, thanking the JCC:

Thank you so very much for everything you do. My children have grown, matured and blossomed since they started the JCC program. It has been the best decision and the best finan-cial sacrifice I have ever made for my family.

My biggest fear was having to pull them from the program at the JCC due to family and economic issues we are currently facing. I knew that keeping them in this loving, nurturing and safe school environment was even more important than staying in our house. I just didn’t think it was going to be possible. But thanks to your generosity, despite the fact that they are experiencing so many changes, their daily routine, teachers, classroom, swimming, music class and friends are the same and they can feel comfort and security at the JCC.

Last year the St. Paul JCC gave $185,393 in fee adjustments and scholarships for early childhood education, membership and summer camp. Funding from the United Jewish Fund and Council directly impacts the JCC’s ability to help Jewish families who are in need of services.

The power of community-based giving: With one gift you make a world of difference in so many lives. Wherever the need is greatest locally, in Israel and in 70 countries, UJFC can address it when our community works together. Here are just two of the many stories of hope:

Zemfira Ravinov, 61, lives with her husband Efim, 73, in a hilltop slum located on the outskirts of

Baku, Azerbaijan. Their apartment is decrepit. The roof leaks and the walls are falling apart. The “kitchen” is

just a small gas burner separated by a simple shower curtain and there is no indoor plumbing.

Zemfira regularly lugs water from the communal water pump up 23 wobbly, wooden stairs into her apartment. Their toilet is a hole in the courtyard below. A neighbor built a wooden house around it and now charges for its use.

Although the apartment has no running water, the government claims that they owe $225 in water payments and the couple has gone into debt trying to pay this off. They live on Efim’s pension, only $93 a month.

Thankfully, the couple has the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, a beneficiary agency of the United Jewish Fund and Council, which provides them with a food card, winter relief, and basic household goods. The couple will also receive emergency assistance to allow them to make simple home repairs.

To learn more about the programs and services you support with a gift to the UJFC, please contact Ted Flaum, campaign direc-tor at [email protected] or 651-695-3185.

The PJ Library is coming to St. Paul

Dawn and Mark Hall’s two young daughters can’t wait to get their books in the mail from the PJ Library each month. “My daughters wait for their books. They are so excited to get mail addressed to them and they know exactly what it is,” said Dawn. “They smile and cheer, ‘My book is here!’” Dawn and Mark are happy to see the PJ Library books arrive for Isabella, age seven and Madeline, age four, as well because every month they get high-quality, age-appropriate Jewish books at no cost to read at bedtime with their daughters.

The PJ Library, an international, award-winning Jewish family engagement program, is launching in St. Paul in November. Created by the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, any Jewish child from six months to eight years can be enrolled. “There’s no catch, no hidden agenda; the books are free,” said Jonathan Parritz, UJFC president. “We think it’s important to help young Jewish families get off to a great start. You don’t have to be a member of a synagogue, or any Jewish organization to get PJ Library books – this is for everyone.”

Every month a child receives a book or music CD in the mail. The books are beautifully illustrated and are about Jewish holidays, values, and folk tales. The books come with reading guides to help parents discuss and do activities with their children around the themes found in the books.

Reading bedtime stories is always an important end-of-day activity in the Hall household. Isabella and Madeline each pick out one or two stories to read with their parents. But it is even more special with PJ Library books. “I know we are always going to have a great conversation about values, beliefs and Judaism,” said Dawn. “I can tell that the PJ Library puts a lot of effort into providing books that are very meaningful for each age group.” The St. Paul family has been receiving PJ Library books through Minneapolis.

“PJ” stands for pajamas, a fitting name for a program whose organizers believe a bond is formed between children and their parents during story time before bed. The PJ Library is designed to strengthen the identities of Jewish children and families and

their relationship to the Jewish community. “PJ Library books help reinforce all the same values our children learn at home, at Talmud Torah and at our synagogue,” said Dawn.

Based on the size of the St. Paul Jewish community, the PJ library expects to deliver books to as many as 800 children each month. More than 65,000 children in 150 communities in North America currently receive The PJ Library books. The program will be funded by the UJFC and the Harold Grinspoon Foundation.

Young families should watch their mailbox for the PJ Library launch in November or December when they will receive a sample book and information on how to sign up. If you don’t receive the information, please contact Sharyn Effress Pesses at [email protected] or 651-695-3186. If you don’t have children six months to eight years old, be sure to tell a friend or neigh-bor with young children about this opportunity.

Roni Levin, the new Israeli shlicha (emissary from Israel) arrived in St. Paul in early September and is already working in our community. Prior to moving to Minnesota, the 26-year-old held a position in the Israeli government. Before that, she was a youth program director for the Misgav Regional Council where she was responsible for informal education activities for the youth of the local municipality.

“I’m excited to be here in St. Paul. Being a shlicha, is something I wanted to do for a long time,” said Roni. “It combines a lot of my expertise – from curriculum planning to youth guidance. I believe in Zionism and think that I can contribute to the state of Israel as a representative in the international Jewish community.”

Roni holds a BA in Political Science and Human Resources and served as a training officer in the IDF. As part of her military service, she was responsible for several squad commanders, developing curriculum and program supervision. Upon becoming a lieutenant, Roni was based in a combat engineering unit as a commander’s training supervision officer and a weapons’ system instructor.

In high school Roni was involved in the Echud Haklai youth movement as a counselor. She volunteered with different communities in Northern Negev area, working with teens and tutoring kids at risk. She was also involved in the Karmiel-Misgav-Pittsburgh Partnership as a summer camp shlicha for the Pittsburgh JCC.

Roni will be in St. Paul for the next year and will work with a variety of organizations including the St. Paul JCC, Talmud Torah, Hillel and local synagogues, teaching Israeli studies and enhancing our community’s connection to Israel through education, advocacy, and cultural and arts events.

The shlichim program is a joint effort between the United Jewish Fund and Council of St. Paul and the Jewish Agency for Israel. Young shlichim are committed to strengthening the connection between diaspora Jews and the state of Israel.

Welcome roni levin, st. paul’s new shlicha

After two amazing years, Alisa Warshavsky, our St. Paul Jewish

community shlicha returned home to Israel in early September. Alisa brought boundless energy and ideas to her position. She inspired her students to understand

and love Israel with all its complexities. This year, Alisa was

recognized as an Outstanding

Shlicha by the Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI) for her work in our community.

Upon her return home, Alisa will go to Tel Aviv University to study the Middle East, Arabic and political science. “It is hard to explain how life changing the last two years have been,” said Alisa of her time in St. Paul. “Not only did

I have an amazing experience as an Israeli shlicha, but I also made personal connections that will stay with me forever. St. Paul will always feel like my second home, and the people here will always stay in my heart. Shalom.”

Todah and l’hitraot (until we meet again), Alisa. We wish you great success.

ST. PAUL VOLUNTEERS TEACH ENGLISH IN ISRAEL THROUGH UJFC’S ANGLIYADA PROGRAM

If you are planning a trip to Israel, either with a mission or on your own, please contact Dan Mogelson at [email protected] or 651-695-3189. The Sovev Kinneret region is St. Paul’s partnership region in Israel. Along with Israeli staff and volunteers in the Sovev Kinneret, we can help you plan a visit to our partnership region and expose you to some of the people, places, and programs that make our partnership so meaningful. Don’t miss the opportunity to travel up north and experience the home away from home that our P2G region can provide.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME IN THE SOVEV KINNERET REGION OF ISRAEL:

Last spring, seven members of the St. Paul Jewish community participated in the Angliyada program in Tiberias, Israel, teaching English to Israelis and new immigrants. Angliyada is a volunteer program funded by the United Jewish Fund and Council, through Partnership-2Gether (formerly known as Partnership 2000). Participants teach for two weeks, along with volunteers from Tulsa and Milwaukee in St. Paul’s partner region.

“Experiencing life in Israel this way was marvelous. It is a very different view than one gets from a tour bus and different luxury hotels every few days,” said Charlie Levine. “The best part was getting to know people, or more accurately and importantly, individual persons. We developed relationships with our students, the staff at the Jewish Agency, and with volunteers.”

The Angliyada program is aimed at Israeli adults who have studied English grammar but have not had the opportunity to speak English. It is an intensive course taught three hours per day for four weeks. Only English is spoken in the classroom. Students sign up for a month-long intensive course, and the volunteer teachers can either come for the first or second session, each two weeks long.

“What I loved most about the class? Getting to know our students as individuals; their fears and desires, their warmth and generosity, their incredible sense of humor and playfulness,” said Nancy Mason Hauser. “Professionally our class included: the head of a plastics factory, retired teachers, hotel workers, artists, engineers, environmental protection authorities, an

interior home decorator, a computer salesman, a cooking show commentator, and the second ranked Jujitsu champion in all of Israel.”

Said Bob and Linda Perry, “While the teaching was an important experience, the actual inter-action with Israeli families and staff members was equally important. Each Friday night, we were hosted for Shabbat by a different family, one on a Moshav and the other in the city of Tiberias. On Lag B’Omer we were excited to join a large Sephardic family celebration where we enjoyed making pita bread and sharing the excitement of the bonfires.”

Angliyada is one of several Partnership2Gether programs that creates personal connections between residents of St. Paul and the Sovev-Kinneret region of Israel. Partnership2Gether brings Diaspora Jews and Israeli Jews together to help establish long-term bonds, which lead to understanding and a mutual commitment for a strong, united Jewish future.

For more information about the Angliyada program through Partnership2Gether (P2G), please contact Dan Mogelson at UJFC, [email protected] or 651-695-3189.

OCTOBER 29 – NOVEMBER 20Minnesota Jewish Theatre Company presents “Our Class”By Tadeusz Slobodzianek, version by Ryan Craig@ Hillcrest Center Theater, 1978 Ford Parkway, St. Paul

In this true story, it’s 1925 in Poland and 10 young Jewish and Catholic children, all classmates, share their dreams of what they would like to be when they grow up. As the friends grow older, things in their small town change. Poland is first invaded by the Soviets and then the Nazis. A fervent nationalism develops and bitterness ensues. In a series of events, friends betray each other and violence escalates to a horrifying end. With an incisive and captivating boldness, Our Class explores human behavior.

Just a few of the unique courses and programs include: archaeological digs, martial arts training, dance, Arabic, environmental studies and the Career Israel internship program.

MASA works to make it as easy as possible for young adults to go to Israel. The UJFC supports MASA through our support of the Jewish Agency for Israel and the Jewish Federations of North America. For more information about going to Israel through MASA, contact Barb Adelman at [email protected] or 952-417-2347 or visit www.MasaIsrael.org.

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 15Twin Cities Jewish Book Fair presents Izzeldin Abuelaish: “I Shall Not Hate: A Gaza Doctor’s Last Sacrifice on the Road to Peace.” 7 p.m. @ St. Paul JCC, 1375 St. Paul Avenue, St. Paul.Hear the riveting story of a Palestinian doctor who, rather than seek revenge after witnessing his three daughters’ deaths by Israeli tank shells, continues his humanitarian call for peace. Abuelaish was born and raised in a refugee camp in the Gaza Strip and has been crossing the lines in the sand that divide Israelis and Palestinians for most of his life - as a physician who treats patients on both sides; as a humanitarian who sees the need for improved health and education; and, most recently, as the father whose daughters were killed. His response to this tragedy made news and won him humanitarian awards around the world. Co-sponsored by the Twin Cities Maimonides Society and the St. Paul Jewish Community Center. For more information contact Beth Gendler at 651-255-4736 or [email protected].
