VHS and The Great Pumpkin DropStory by Cassidy Fritts, Senior

This year students from Vilseck High School and Vilseck Elementary School came together to celebrate Fall in an enjoyable, educational way. Mr. Eric Mead and Mr. Sam Cassou put together a new event, combining their ninth grade science classes and a traditional autumn symbol. The result: a pumpkin launch. The idea originally came from Mr. Ryan Goodfellow, who did the same event at his previous school. The ninth grade science students were required to design a type of cushion that would protect their pumpkins as they landed, after a long fall. All the pumpkins had a preliminary fall from a school window, with the survivors advancing to the final level - a long, long fall from the top of a fire truck ladder. On October 31st, the ninth grade science classes and a few elementary classes gathered in the courtyard of Vilseck High School to watch their pumpkins drop from the top of the fire truck ladder. Parents watched from the sidelines, high school students stuck their heads out of windows to gawk, and the Grafen-woehr commander, Colonel James Saenz, came out to witness the event. Unfortunately, many pumpkins were terminated after their fatal falls, but a few survived triumphantly.

For the past month, students in Ms. Hogberg’s class have been working on novel holiday gifts for orphans living nearby. They handcrafted 18 pillows, which were recently delivered to the USAG Grafenwoehr VFW for transport to Most, Czech Republic.
