FAITH & WORK 4
You and I want to succeed. Either personally or professionally.
So, I am sharing with you some of my beliefs which may be helpful to you.
They are:
1 Believe in God. Ask Him for solutions and cures and blessings. Early on. Do not let the
situation get out of control until you ask for His intercession.
2 Make yourself valuable. Good enough is not good enough. Achieve more than is
expected of you. Go the extra mile. Work longer hours and start earlier than required.
3 Listen. Talk less. Observe more.
4 Emulate successful people. Learn what Jesus did in various situations. Watch what
others do in the USA and in the world.
5 Make quality decisions. Thoughtful ones. Or defer to those who know more about the
issue than you do. Make decisions which will make you more valuable.
6 Think. Think again. Think ahead. Think.
7 Balance mission and margin. It is hard to generate revenue and to save money. It’s
critical and important to do both.
8 Plan. Plan your career as well as you plan your vacation. Planning will determine your
success or failure. Work your plan.
9 Communicate. Do it. There is no such thing as “no communication!” Silence will
communicate more than you would imagine.
10 How are things? Good or bad? Compared to what or to whom? Most things have a
“relative value.” Be an optimist. Fill your cup with success.
God bless,
WVD

New York’s legendary Mayor Rudy
Giuliani fascinated the 400+
supporters of St. Barnabas’ 117th
Founder’s Day celebration with firsthand
accounts of national triumph and tragedy.
At the annual fundraiser for the St. Barnabas
Free Care Fund, Mayor Giuliani received
the St. Barnabas Hance Award, recognizing
his courage, compassion and guiding spirit
in common with St. Barnabas founder
Gouverneur P. Hance (1871 – 1954).
Giuliani’s poignant and patriotic message
brought the audience to their feet, but not
before the Mayor himself applauded the
services of two St. Barnabas impresarios:
William V. Day, visionary leader and
president for the 50th year, and John J.
Curran, chairman of the board of trustees.
The signature event, held at the Pittsburgh
Marriott North, supports the Free Care
Fund, which last year provided more than
$7 million charity care to nursing and
living assistance patients. Sponsorship
and proceeds from the silent auction,
private audience with Mayor Giuliani and
the awards dinner underwrite nearly one
week of free care at The Health System.
“America’s Mayor” Giuliani joins an
impressive Who’s Who of St. Barnabas
Founder’s Day honorees: President Gerald
R. Ford, Terry Bradshaw, Barbara Bush,
Dr. Norman Vincent Peale and Debbie
Reynolds, among many others.

FAITH & WORK 6
W hen Margaret Lichtenstein was 65 she began
hunting deer at a north Texas ranch. A real
character, my mother was continually fascinated
with hunting until she was 92 years old. After more than 20 kills,
she hung up her rifle. Even so, her grandchildren continued
calling her “Nana the Ninja.”
“Kidnapped” From Corpus Christi to Pittsburgh
At 98, Mother lived independently in Corpus Christi, and after
many spirited discussions, she agreed to “visit” Pittsburgh. I
think she always knew she was coming to stay. As we passed
through the small airport’s security, my mother loudly whis-
pered to a TSA agent, “I hope you can help me. I’m being
kidnapped!”
My Deer Hunting Mother’s
AdventureWe were quickly
ushered into a closed
room for further questions. After I
identified myself as the Chief Executive of Allegheny
County, Pennsylvania, I was cleared of
kidnapping charges. Mother thoroughly
enjoyed my distress and my 98-year-old
prankster and I made our flight.
From Oakmont to St. Barnabas
Mother stayed in Oakmont, northeast
of Pittsburgh, with my wife Elin and
me for a while. We visited assisted
living facilities. After two weeks, she
chose St. Barnabas. “I like the people
there the best,” she said. The finishing touch
in her living assistance apartment was the head of
a 12-point buck proudly mounted on a wall.
FAITH & WORK 7
Birthdays and Beauty Salons
For as long as I could remember, Mother
went to church every Sunday and the
beauty parlor every two weeks. As a
birthday gift, I made a special arrange-
ment with the St. Barnabas beauty salon
manager – to pay for her bi-monthly
appointments for the next year. Two
weeks later the manager called to say that
Mother thought the gift was wonderful.
She asked him, “Did you say ‘free’ for
the rest of the year?” When he nodded
“yes” she replied, “Then change my
appointments to every week.” I sent
another check!
Stroke Recovery and
Sparkling Chandeliers
In 2010, Mother suffered a stroke and
experienced the most valued benefit of
living at St. Barnabas. After her hospital
stay, she returned to the same building as
her Arbors apartment for skilled nursing
care and rehabilitation. A system of care
was already in place for her. Nurses,
doctors, therapists and an amazing staff
were her 24-hour medical team.
From her window, we could see how the
Crystal Conservatories at St. Barnabas lit
up the Valencia sky. When Elin and I
learned of “named gifts” for the Tower,
we chose this opportunity to help the
patients served by St. Barnabas Free Care
This story is shared by Margaret Lichtenstein’s
son, James C. Roddey. Mr. Roddey works as a
senior advisor to St. Barnabas Health System
and lives there too. Actively non-retired, he
enjoys watching wildlife, especially deer, safely
pass his Woodlands at St. Barnabas windows.
Fund and aqua therapy at the
Conservatories’ pool. Today, a crystal
chandelier sparkles magnificently in the
Tower and commemorates the equally
brilliant Margaret Lichtenstein: world-
traveler, wife, mother, grandmother,
great grandmother, unrivaled party host,
trickster, hunter.
My mother, Elin and I appreciated her
good judgement in choosing St. Barnabas.
There, she found everything she wwanted
and needed. She eventually transitioned to
St. Barnabas hospice and after living
happily and actively, passed away at age
101. Mother left wonderful memories of a
life well lived…and enjoyed.

ONE EMERGENCY. TWO OUTCOMES. These real-life situations signify the difference between living at
St. Barnabas and a stand-alone facility. The decision impacts
your parent as well as your family:
First scenario: You thank God your mother is in good hands.
Last night, you were informed that your mother’s labored
breathing suggests pneumonia. She agreed to be transferred
from the living assistance apartment to the adjoining
skilled care unit and she is resting comfortably. At this
morning’s visit, the doctor will share his care plan, involving
the health system’s team of medical professionals,
rehabilitation therapists and nurses. Home care may
follow her upon discharge.
Second scenario: You don’t know where to turn. Your
mother was hospitalized for pneumonia and now must be
discharged to a skilled nursing care. Mom is too weak to

return to her high rise apartment. The attending physician
treated her illness but is not her general practitioner and
offers little advice. Hospital social workers listed several
nursing homes that you must contact for services and
availability. Where will Mom live, after that?
St. Barnabas Is a Community of Care
“All this time, I never realized what all you do for people,”
says a long-time St. Barnabas supporter, “until Mum lived
there. What a blessing St. Barnabas is.”
He was familiar with the
charitable health care concern
for years, but when his mother
was suddenly widowed, he
appreciated the benefit of
St. Barnabas, the system. Over
the course of two years, he
relied upon one care team:
St. Barnabas doctors, physical
therapists, home care companions,
nurses and aides. They helped
his mother transition seamlessly

ADVANTAGE ST. BARNABAS: THE SYSTEMPatients are Connected with Health & Lifestyle Options
Within the St. Barnabas system, support for the many phases of
senior living exists: wellness programs, residency options, social
networking, physical recovery and rehabilitation, specialty and
general medicine, acute health care, fitness, recreation and
emotional assistance for residents and their families. Highly
credentialed clinicians and care managers maximize independent
function and improve the physical and psychological well-being
of St. Barnabas residents and patients.
This St. Barnabas system…continuum…spectrum of care is
unrivaled among healthcare providers in western Pennsylvania.
It is why seniors and their adult children choose St. Barnabas.
An alliance of 700+ professionals in nearly 20 centers of
hospitality, residence and medical care promote aging in place:
a unique benefit of an all-encompassing living environment.
Kathleen Brenneman, Director of Resident Relations, swears by
the partnership of St. Barnabas practitioners and programs.
“People live happier, healthier and longer here at St. Barnabas.
I see that every day.”
Topping it off is the St. Barnabas Free Care Fund. Residents,
patients and their families trust St. Barnabas’ 117-year tradition
of operating on a sound financial basis and providing charity
care to those in need.

nursing care and eventually hospice. A rapport with the
medical staff and constant communication made a world of
difference. For every situation, St. Barnabas was there, with

June 5 at Butler Country Club.
A net total of $119,178 was raised for the Free Care Fund
despite a deluge of rain. The morning field completed all 18
holes and boasted the winning foursome from Cowden Associates.
Awarded the Bell Trophy — named for the tournament’s first
chairman Donald Bell — the team of Bob Crnjarich, Tony
Chammas, Harry Klucher and Luke Bumgarder netted a
low score of 133 — this was their second consecutive win.
The rain did stop the afternoon tourney after three holes of play
with golfers moving indoors in good humor and generosity of

W hy throw a party? The
benefits of socialization
not only contribute our
increased brain size, but can improve and
preserve brain function as we age.
Numerous studies have shown profound
ongoing brain benefits of socialization,
such as delayed onset of dementia and
Alzheimer’s disease. In fact, a study from
Sweden that studied individuals 75 years
or older, found that those who were less
social, single and lived alone had twice
the risk of dementia compared to those
who were not. So you better start writing
out your invite list soon.
Being social not only helps to preserve the
brain, but also provides profound physical
benefits as well. Studies that measure
disability have shown in those over 65

active had considerably lower levels of

disability no matter the gender, race or
advanced age compared to the less
socially active.
The brain and physical health benefits of
socialization are often referred to as
“social capital.” Social ties can build trust,
connections, and stimulate participation.
This is particularly important for seniors
whose social capital tends to decline with
aging. Retirement, loss of friends and
family members can sharply reduce daily
social contacts and stimulation, and this
can have a profoundly negative impact on
mental and physical health.
Being more social offers a whole host of
other health benefits as well. Improved

benefits from social interactions. Living

MemorySurrounded by friends and family,
Peter J. Dattilo passed away at
the age of 57 the same way he
lived each day. Often loud and always
smiling, “Pete” could enter a room of
strangers and leave it full of laughing
new friends. A former Bloomsburg
University professor reflected that he
“lived more in one day than most
people do in a lifetime.” To know Pete
was to love Pete, whether you wanted
to or not.
Pete battled stage 4 prostate cancer for
nearly ten years with the help of
specialists in Philadelphia and his
hometown of Pittsburgh. In early 2017,
Pete was discharged from the hospital
and turned to his steadfast source of
strength, his mother Doris Blair. Mrs.
Blair then turned to St. Barnabas
Nursing Home for his post-hospital
rehabilitation and recovery. Pete, his
sister Dariann Rose and younger
brother Jim referred to St. Barnabas as
their mother’s home ever since Mrs.
Blair and her late husband Gil moved
to The Woodlands at St. Barnabas.
They were relieved Pete was welcomed
into the St. Barnabas family.
Nurses and doctors coordinated
radiation therapy with UPMC Passavant.
The Richland EMS director personally
transported Pete, frail yet boisterous.
Therapists, nursing assistants and
housekeepers alike engaged in sarcastic
back-and-forths with their young wise-
cracking patient, all the while sharing the
heartbreak of his worsening condition.
On February 23, the once vibrant
salesman came to terms with his decline,
sought the guidance of his pastor and
quietly died with Doris, Jim and his
mother-in-law Diane Shock, friend Bonnie
Bock and Pastor Jay Passavant by his side.
Celebrating Pete’s life at the memorial
service and wake were neighbors from
Pittsburgh’s North Hills, classmates
from North Allegheny High School and
Bloomsburg University, his co-worker
family including Jim, James and Cheryl
Dattilo of Pittsburgh Structural Clay
Products & Tile Collection, R.I. Lampus
& Co. and even a few competitors.
Donations in Pete’s memory continue
to be received by St. Barnabas
Charities in support of the Free Care
Fund, including one from his nieces’
academy in New Jersey. Send your
contribution in the enclosed envelope
