VOLUME 38–NO. 4 APRIL 2015
B y the time you receive this, we will have officially moved from the season of winter into the
season of spring. We have also been moving towards longer days and (hopefully) warmer
weather. In our worship, we’ve been moving too—following Jesus as he moves toward the cross, the
grave, and ultimately to resurrected life and victory over sin and death. In the first week of April,
this journey culminates with what we call “Holy Week.” It is the week that we remember and reflect
on the week of Jesus’ death. The week begins as Jesus enters Jerusalem triumphantly on Palm Sun-
day, continues with Christ’s suffering and death, and concludes with a festive celebration of resur-
rection on Easter morning. Below, I’ve listed the dates and times of the different worship opportuni-
ties available during this special week, along with some other chances for you to join in celebration
and service with the family of Faith in the month of April.
March 29th: Palm Sunday Festival Worship – Come raise your palm branches and cry,
“Hosanna” to our humble king, Lord Jesus. (8:00 and 10:30 am)
April 2nd: Maundy Thursday – We gather to remember our Lord’s last supper before his death,
and partake of the holy meal of forgiveness, where Christ offers the gift of himself.
(7:00 pm)
April 3rd: Good Friday – In ever-increasing darkness, we reflect on the death of Jesus.
(7:30 pm)
April 5th: Easter Sunday – We celebrate the resurrection of our Lord and the victory over sin
and death that is ours in Jesus’ name (6:30, 8:00, 10:30 am). Easter breakfast will be
served from 7:00 to 8:00 am in the downstairs Fellowship Hall.
April 11th: Spring Cleanup Day – Come and help us clean up, pick up, and fix up, as we care for
the church building and grounds we are blessed to enjoy. (8 am to noon)
April 19th: Faith in Action Day – Our church’s bi-annual day of service which includes a
number of service opportunities around the community. Look for more details and
sign-up information in the church forum or on the website.
April 22nd: Baccalaureate Service – You are welcome to attend this evening service for our
graduating high school seniors, as we send them out into the world with the Lord’s
blessing. (7:45 pm)
April 29th: Statements of Faith – You are invited to come and listen in the church nave as our
8th graders share their faith using statements they have been working on all year in
preparation for confirmation. (6:30 pm)

Nicole Tellez, Simeon Charlie Huber (son of Tony & Erin Huber), Kody Alexander Rossi (son of
Shawn & Lisa Rossi), and the Thompson triplets- Paige Olivia, Payton Alexander, Piper Quinn
(children of Dallas Thompson & Kelli Borrell) into the flock of Jesus, our Good Shepherd.

Church Clean-up
Faith’s Board of Trustees have scheduled a church clean-up on Saturday, April 11 beginning
at 8:00am. All friends and members of Faith are encouraged to come and help. Lunch will be
provided by Thrivent Financial and served to everyone helping.

Book Group - April 9, 7-8pm at Dally’s Deli
Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe
Uncle Tom, Topsy, Sambo, Simon Legree,
little Eva: their names are American bywords,
and all of them are characters in Harriet
Beecher Stowe's remarkable novel of the pre-
Civil War South. Uncle Tom's Cabin was revo-
lutionary in 1852 for its passionate indictment
of slavery and for its presentation of Tom, "a
man of humanity," as the first black hero in
American fiction. Labeled racist and conde-
scending by some contemporary critics, it re-
mains a shocking, controversial, and powerful
work -- exposing the attitudes of white nine-
teenth-century society toward "the peculiar
institution" and documenting, in heartrending
detail, the tragic breakup of black Kentucky
families "sold down the river." An immediate
international sensation, Uncle Tom's
Cabin sold 300,000 copies in the first year,
was translated into thirty-seven languages,
and has never gone out of print: its political
impact was immense, its emotional influence
immeasurable.
Easter Breakfast April 5, 7-8 am Join us for egg casseroles, breakfast
breads, juice and coffee on Easter
morning. Your free-will donation will
be used to offset costs for high school students attend-
ing the 2016 LC-MS National Youth Gathering in New
Orleans.
Easter lilies will adorn our chancel again
this Easter. You are invited to place a lily
in memory or in honor of a loved one. If
you have not already ordered a lily
($8.50), and would like one, please call
the church office. Orders will be taken
through April 1.

Marlin & Louan Meyer in thanksgiving for their
many contributions of service to the annual bazaar.

Sunday, April 19th
9:15am - Open Table Program - we will pack lunches at Faith
Lutheran and deliver them to Catholic Social Services. Currently our
goal is 2,000 lunches. The actual number we make will be based on
donations that come in during the month of April and other special kinds of
contributions. We do all that we can to provide a nutritious lunch for just
over a dollar per lunch. Please make checks payable to Faith Lutheran Church (marked for Open
Table) and drop it in the Sunday offering or mail it to the church office.
1:00 - Parkview Cemetery - We will do clean-up...helpful items to bring might be some work gloves
and maybe a whisk broom. Meet at the entrance.
2:00 - The Homestead Assisted Living - We will visit & play games with residents - meet in the
lobby or just inside the door.
2:00 - College View Assisted Living - All pre-school through 6th grade children are invited to sing
at the afternoon worship. Meet in their lobby at 1:50.
Parents are encouraged to stay - it’s about 1/2 hour.
5:00 - Crossroads Rescue Mission - We will provide a potluck meal for the residents.

Ruth Circle and anyone wishing to participate in Bible study led by Pastor Dunbar, along with prayer, fellowship,
and support of other Christian sisters will meet on Wednesday, April 22, at 1:30 in rooms 102-103.

Hastings Zone Spring Workshop is April 25, 9-11:30am at Zion Wanda, Juniata. An ingathering of non-perishable
food will go to the Hastings Food Pantry. Offerings will benefit Kids Against Hunger. Registration fee is $5. This
year’s theme is Sow, Reap, and Nourish.

THE SUNDAY LESSONS [E-100]- Fellowship hall - 9:15AM This class takes an in-depth look at the scripture lessons taken from the
Sunday morning readings. Class will be led by Pastor Dunbar.
THE STORY [E-101]- Room 10– 9:15AM - CLASS CONTINUES THROUGH MAY 10
The Story continues to work its way through a 31-week entire Bible narrative.
Parents of 5th-8th grade students, you have the opportunity to study the same
material as your child only geared for adults! Take home some discussion points
to continue with your child at home. DCE Wade Johnson leads this class.
BASIC BIBLE TRUTHS [P-100]- Room 102-103 - March 1– April 26
This class serves as adult confirmation for those wishing to become new members. It is also
attended by members who want a review of our faith and teachings. For more information
contact Pastor Josh.

MEN’S BREAKFAST BIBLE STUDY [P-100]- Ray’s Café - 7:00AM Join the men’s group at Ray’s Café for coffee, maybe some breakfast, some really great Bible Study,

MORNING BIBLE STUDY [P-200]- 9:00am- Room 11- Pastor Dunbar, leader Our get-togethers always start with a time of coffee and treats and visiting, and then, after a brief
devotion, we get to talking about the past Sunday’s sermon. These casual discussions always lead to
new insight and good, personal application of the pastor’s message, not to mention close bonds of
friendship. So don’t be shy. Come on in! (We will not meet during Holy Week - April 1)
EVENING BIBLE STUDY- [P-100] - 6:30pm- Room 11– Pastor Dunbar, leader Loving Someone with an Addiction ...Nearly every one of us either suffers from an addiction or knows
someone within our circle of family, friends, or coworkers who does. Addiction impacts us not only bio-
logically and psychologically but spiritually, as well. In this brief, 3-week and video-based class, we
will examine what addiction is, how it affects the entire family, the role of shame and stigma in addic-
tion, how recovery is possible. And we will search the Scriptures for direction and hope. Class will be
on Wednesdays, April 8, 15 and 22.

C= Cultural …..contemporary issue/current event 100 level- No prior knowledge of subject needed E= Exegetical...study of the Bible 200 level- Some Biblical knowledge helpful H= Historical…. chronological study 300 level- More challenging and uses own Bible P= Practical….. a specific issue/practice in life 400 level- Homework and a “dig deep” attitude

Verse of the Month – 1 John 3:16 – “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ
laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for one another.”
Through the example of Jesus, we learn about real love—God’s perfect love for us. And since we have
been forgiven and made new through the death and resurrection of Christ, we are called to show that
love to others by laying down our own lives. Could you commit this verse to memory this month?
Spend 5 minutes a day, perhaps in the morning when you wake up, or at night before you go to sleep, to
learn and memorize 1 John 3:16. Tape it to your bathroom mirror or bedroom door and be reminded of
God’s love and God’s call for you.

the forum and in the back of the sanctuary for your donations
and you may bring them any time. To date we have collected 348 pounds of non-perishables.
Community News
Orphan Grain Train can use your donations of good, stain-free, clean clothing. Also needed are non-
breakable household items and goods. Kay Schutte will help you coordinate delivery of items to the
Grand Island warehouse if you are unable to get them there or if you would like to help sort and pack
boxes at the warehouse in GI on the 1st Thursday of each month with other volunteers from Faith, call
Kay, 402-463-0039. Also, please remember to save your plastic grocery bags and bring them to the
church. They are used to create plastic sleeping mats!
Invitation to All Men… you are invited to Man Feast, April 12, at Peace Lutheran Church GI,
sponsored by Iron Men - the men’s ministry of Peace. Tickets are on sale for $25 each until March 31.
Doors open at 4:30 and the event begins at 5pm. Guest speakers are the Benham brothers, authors of
Whatever the Cost. The brothers are entrepreneurs helping people live powerfully for Jesus in the areas
of leadership, work, family, and culture.
An April 25 Concert by Natalie Grant with special guest Love & The Outcome will be at
Third City Christian Church, Grand Island, NE. Doors open at 6:00pm for the 7:00pm concert. Tickets
