Dear People of Faith, A consistent highlight in my role as one of your pastors is worshipping with you. It has been a great winter and early spring of worship experiences at Faith. The addition of Pastor Christine’s energized worship leadership and excellent sermons is a precious gift. Holy Week and Easter services were awesome, wow. Thank you to all of our musicians and choirs for lifting our hearts. Special thanks to Shelly Hilgers for coordinating our Easter music.

Just prior to Easter Pastor Christine and I completed a sermon series on some of our favorite Psalms titled, “Poems for Pause, Protest and Power.” We look forward to sharing with you our next sermon series, “Tracking Jesus Thru John” which will begin on April 3rd. The Gospel of John is one of the most beloved books of the Bible. If I could have only one book from the Bible it would be John’s Gospel. This Fourth Gospel gives us our most intimate connection with Jesus, the Word that became flesh and pitched His tent with us. Our Wednesday Lenten services this year were especially powerful as we journeyed toward Easter with our theme, “Powered by Faith.” Thank you Paul Ericcson, John Bruellman, Sally Sparby and Marcia Willmsen for your inspiring messages as we gathered for “Holden Evening prayer.” Again I want to thank all of our talented musicians and cantors that led us in worship. If you enjoy the "Holden Evening Prayer" liturgy that we use Wednesday evenings during Lent, please refresh yourself and celebrate Spring by joining us for Marty Haugen's uplifting communion liturgy, "Now the Feast and Celebration," beginning weekly at the 10:30 am service starting Sunday, April 10th. Many of you are familiar with our mission statement, “To Learn, Serve and Share the Gospel of Jesus Christ.” Less familiar

to you might be our vision statement, “To be a dynamic, energized worshipping community where all are growing in our

relationship with Jesus Christ, one another and those beyond our walls.” One of the five key strategies in our current Long

Range Plan is intended to make this vision a reality. That key strategy is: “Provide meaningful, engaging and welcoming

worship services designed to bring us closer in our relationship with Jesus Christ.” I pray that you will join your sisters and

brothers in our Faith family for worship as often as you are able this spring as we together live out the mission, vision and

long range plan of our church.

”Spiritual Fitness Basics”

It’s been almost 25 years since I first heard the term spiritual fitness from my physical training instructor at the FBI National Academy. The importance of spiritual fitness in our lives, individually and collectively, is the number one principle of Public Safety Ministries. The term and the idea of a fit spirit is so fundamental to our ministry work, that sometimes I forget that it is a term that can mean different things to different people. So I thought I’d share how I define the term in the context of our ministry. Our lives are made up of three components: Body - Mind - Soul. Our physical health and fitness defines our bodies, our mental health and fitness defines our minds, and our spiritual health and fitness defines our souls. More specifically, our physical life is defined by how we move. How our limbs, joints, muscles, internal organs like our hearts and lungs move. Our mental life (also referred to as our intellectual

life) is defined by how we think. How our minds process information, how we learn, how we remember and how we forget. And our spiritual life is defined by how we… connect. How we connect with God, how we connect with others, and how we connect with ourselves. I could go much deeper on the subject, asking questions about how we define God? Others? Self? But that discussion is for another day. For now I want you to think, and try and think hard, about what it means to be spiritual and what it means to connect. Think about the who, what, where, when, and how of our connections. A common vocabulary is very important to any learning, exercising and development process. I hope this exercise is helpful in how we develop our levels of spiritual fitness, now and in the future. So, Happy Connecting! Take Care, Pastor Dan Carlson

M ore ways to Plug in at Faith!!! What better way to get involved (plugged in) then to serve on the Church

Council. Current position openings of outgoing council members are Worship and Music

Ministry, Social Outreach Ministry - FILLED, and Life Growth and Mission Ministry -

FILLED. In addition to council members there are two Executive Committee positions

available. Vice President - serves as presiding officer in the absence of the president.

Oversees personnel with Senior Pastor. Treasurer - is responsible for the accounts of the

congregation. This officer has the primary signatory responsibility with regard to the

various checking and/or savings accounts of the congregation. Qualified individuals will

have knowledge and/or experience in these areas. Terms begin in June 2016. For more

SPRING CLEAN-UP

Saturday May 7th, 8:30-NOON, we will be performing general yard maintenance, such as raking, trimming trees and shrubs, cleaning gutters and windows, sweeping parking lots. We will meet in Steiner Hall for Juice and coffee, split up into small Task Groups. Items needed for the clean-up are Volunteers, squeegees, buckets, rakes, ladders wheel burrows, shovels and SMILES. Volunteering at Faith can be fun, productive and as easy as a few hours Spring Clean-up. Thanks to those that helped out last Fall it was a great Success with much accomplished!

Those we are made aware of will be honored in worship Sunday, May 29th and at the Rutz Lake Cemetery Memorial Day Service May 30th at 8:00am. There will be Military Appreciation Response Cards located on the Welcome Desk in the gathering space beginning Sunday, April 3rd. These response cards will also be available during the Wednesday evening worship service beginning April 6th. It is our hope that you will take the time to fill out a card and place it in the basket provided or mail back to the church. This will allow us to honor your family member in May. FAITH AND POLITICS ... And other lessons from the shores of Lake Waconia.Currently the mayor of Chanhassen, Denny Laufenburger, was born and raised in Waconia. Following service in the US Navy and a career of Sales, Marketing and PR in the High Tech sector, he is now retired. Denny will share how his formative years in Waconia has shaped both his faith and his passion for service.

Fourth Thursday Book Club meets April 28, in the Fireside Room,

at 7:00pm. to discuss News to Me by Laurie Hertzel. News to Me is the adventurous story of Hertzel's journey into the bustling world of print journalism in the mid-1970s, a time when copy was still banged out on typewriters by chain-smoking men in fedoras and everybody read the paper. A coming-of-age tale in more ways than one, Hertzel's eighteen-year career at the Duluth News Tribune began when journalism was a predominantly male profession. And while the newspaper trade was booming, Duluth had fallen on difficult times as factories closed and more and more people moved away. Hertzel describes her climb up the ranks of the paper against the backdrop of a Midwestern city during a time of extraordinary change. She was there during major events like the Congdon murders, the establishment of the BWCA, and the rise of Indian treaty rights, and eventually follows the biggest story of her life to Soviet Russia-and completely blows her deadline. Written with the insight and humor of someone who makes a living telling stories, News to Me is the chronicle of a small-city newspaper on the cusp of transformation, an affectionate portrait of Duluth and its people, and the account of a talented, persistent journalist who witnessed it all and was changing right along with it-whether she wanted to or not.

2016 Fall Faith Formation

Change is inevitable. After much evaluation, consideration, and recognizing that each student is unique in their learning style, Faith is developing and adapting different techniques to create meaningful, caring and fun experiences for all 5th - 12th Grade students that are involved in Faith Formation programs, such as BYG, Ignite and FLY. There will be an information meeting on Wednesday, May 11 from 630pm - 730pm in the Sanctuary for all parents and students that will be in 5th-9th Grade in the Fall of 2016.

Please make every effort to be in attendance, so that you can have your questions and concerns addressed.

SAGES 55+ will gather at the Arboretum in May for a

leisurely or brisk walk or bike ride while viewing the

beauty of flowers and trees. Spring bulbs may be

in place or perhaps summer flowers. We’ll have

lunch together and a chance to relax in the beauty of nature.

IGNITE Confirmation students Affirming their Baptism

Faith Lutheran’s Summer Stretch is a service learning day camp for middle school

young people in current grades 5, 6 or 7. Summer Stretch provides a series of five

day camps - always on Thursdays - July 7th through August 4th. The mornings are

spent doing acts of service: the Waconia Food Shelf, Feed My Starving Children,

Good Samaritan Center, etc. The afternoons offer a variety of recreational fun

times: A water park, mini-golf, trampolines, swimming, etc.

At the end of the season, this year on August 4th - all 100+ churches who

participate in Summer Stretch join together at Valley Fair for a day full of fun and

celebration. That day will be kicked off with a worship experience at one of the

Shakopee churches.

Registration this year will be ONLINE beginning in mid—April. Watch for more

information by email or by Sunday morning worship announcements. There will

be a medical release form for you to print and sign and return—all other registra-

tion info will be gather in the online form.

Holden Evening Prayer is a ritual and tradition for Lent at Faith Lutheran. Working with kids, I know that it is a time of the church year that they look forward to. Each Wednesday during Lent people gather for a bowl of soup before entering the sanctuary for worship. The musical order of service becomes familiar as we gather five weeks in a row using the same format.

Today, I prepare for this newsletter on the day after the last Holden Evening Prayer for 2016. It was open mic night and anyone who wanted was able to share how their own faith is powered. For me, it’s the experience of sharing Holden Evening prayer in the beautiful sanctuary at Faith Lutheran. The biggest blessing of all for me is to gaze around the sanctuary throughout the service and to see people of Faith representing all generations gathered together and singing, “Let my prayer rise us!”

I’m kind of a church nerd and worship music of all varieties fuels my faith. I love to be in the sanctuary and sing praise to God. But last night I felt particularly blessed in those surroundings. There was a young boy in front of me – I could clearly hear him singing his heart out. When I gazed about I spotted a whole line of high school youth sitting together singing out and sharing eye contact with each other. I spotted one other high schooler sitting with her mother and brother – she clearly loved the music as it appeared that she had put her book aside and was just singing as in a choir. There was one young lady helping her Grandpa follow along on the echo part as we sang the Psalmody for 141. Very touching to watch as they put their heads together in song.

Making disciples is a calling that I take seriously. In my role as a children, youth and family minister I am always on the lookout for times when I see children acting out their faith – either deepening their own faith, or sharing faith with others. My heart was touched last evening during the Lord’s Prayer when I could hear the voice of the same young boy that I had heard singing earlier – this time I heard him praying. To God be the glory.

Life is busy. Sometimes we catch ourselves going around and around in circles trying to keep up with all of the activities of busy families. Sometimes it is so hard to make worship a priority. Sometimes students in IGNITE Confirmation are in a panic to get enough sermon notes in. Today as I reflect on Holden Evening Prayer experiences during Lent of 2016 my prayers rise up.

O Lord, bless all of the families of Faith Lutheran church. Help each to find ways to make worship a habit.

May all see the benefits in gathering with the family of God. Let worship be the heartbeat of our lives.

On Palm Sunday or at Prime Time on Wednesday, March 30th, fifteen of our young

people were welcomed to the Lord’s table through the milestone of First Communion.

Through Holy Communion the family of God is strengthened for service as we receive the

forgiveness of our sins through the abiding love of Jesus Christ. May God bless these

children on their journey of faith.

We’re super excited about VBS 2016 at Faith! At Vacation Bible

School kids are able to experience God in surprising and

unforgettable ways.

This year’s theme — Cave Quest takes us underground. Every day

one of our Bible Buddies will teach us about God’s love that takes

us through all the dark times in our lives. Four themes - four vers-

es - four stories. There will be a lot of fun along the way too!

VBS will be Monday - Thursday, June 15-18 from 9 am ‘til noon.

Vacation Bible School

June 13-16

Why Bible Camp? Because camp is a great place for kids to see

how fun it is to live in a community of faith. At camp scripture,

prayer and worship give rhythm to each day. The schedule is

seasoned with fun and games - both in the lake and on the shore -

in large groups as well as small.

Camp Counselors are young Christian role models who feel called to

share their own faith with young people all summer long. At camp

kids relate to their peers, their camp counselors AND Myron or

Mary T who accompany them to camp. Every child needs a BIBLE

CAMP experience.

Faith APPS are electives that ninth graders choose from a menu of choices. They

are offered by AAA Adults of Faith Lutheran who have gifts to share with young

people. This year the APPS and leaders offered a wide variety of topics.

Dangerous Devos for Guys; Girl Power/God Power; Gingerbread Outreach; Lefsa

and Other Family Rituals; What’s Your Type (personalities), etc.

Pictured here are Faith Chests that were made by eight members of the ninth

grade class working beside a group of men who volunteered. These chests as well

as chests that were made by a Faith APP group last year will be presented to

families at the baptism of their children. It is a box that can become a family altar

as the family gathers around to remember and celebrate the anniversary of

baptism and other important times in the life of the family and/or the child.
