We have had record rainfall, numerous frosts and strong destructive winds. Notwithstanding this, the course conditions have stood up remarkably well. The conditions have highlighted some areas that need attention, including the bottom of the 2nd fairway near the small creek and the 10th fairway which is the next fairway to have the sand-link drainage installed. These two areas will be fixed as soon as practical. The path linking the 11th and 12th has been completed and this in turn has fixed the problem area on the top of the left hand bunker on the 11th. With the completion of the course irrigation system, we can look forward to spring and summer as we will see the course in great condition with the advent of good watering and resulting grass coverage. We have completed another financial year, with an acceptable profit. The profit was affected by the increased number of wet days (in comparison to last year), which had an impact on the profit in the order of $80,000. The Course Improvement Program has continued throughout the year with the completion of the Bunker Improvement Program. There has been an emphasis on planting and presentation of the gardens. The flagpoles on the 1st tee have certainly added to the stand out features around the clubhouse which include the sandstone flagging on the 4th tee. The monthly a la carte evenings in Acres have been a huge success with many members attending on a regular basis. The French themed August a la carte evening was very well received and the Spring September evening is filling fast. Our new Head Chef, Paul Bacon is set to impress with a contemporary Australian menu. We have also attracted many private functions and weddings to the club and I am delighted that many of these bookings are functions hosted by CHCC members. The club does offer members incentives for holding a function at the club and you can contact Mirella Buckler for details. The restaurant profit has shown a significant improvement over the last year and we look forward to a continued positive income stream from this asset in the future. The club recently hosted the annual charity golf day, raising in the vicinity of $46,000, of which $20,000 has been donated to MS Australia. Parker Hannifin, the events major sponsor, along with Yusen Logistics, Bright Print Group, Bella Dental Care, Westpac Norwest, Power Ford, Classic Group and Seabeck Engineering all contributed to making the day a success. I’d like to also thank all of the members who support this event by playing in the day and donating goods or services for the various raffles and auctions. The Board and club staff are working hard to make the game of golf as enjoyable as possible for club members. Understandably, this can be ruined by slow play which continues to be a problem. I would remind all members to keep up to the group in front. On behalf of the Board and staff, I thank all members for their continued support and good golfing for the remainder of the year. CEO’s Report

Page 2 Fairways Castle Hill Country Club

Dear Castle Hill Country Club members, Welcome to the September edition of Fairways. Member/Non Member Pricing On September 1 the Club introduced member and non member pricing for beverages, food and merchandise in the lounge bar, sprig bar, and pro shop. The main purpose of this initiative is to provide members with a benefit to non members. This pricing structure should also encourage non members who frequent the Club to consider taking up membership at the Club. Members must present their membership card at the point of sale to be eligible for member pricing, and whilst I am aware this may be inconvenient for some members who in the past have simply quoted their membership number when purchasing on their house account, this has resulted in a number of instances of purchases being assigned to wrong member accounts. I am sure it shouldn’t take long for members to get in the

habit of presenting your membership card when purchasing goods at the Club. There are a number of major projects going on inside the Club house, and out on the course at the moment and I pleased to be able to update you as follows; 14th Tee Rebuild Works are on track to have the 14th tee rebuild completed by mid September. Grass has been laid on the tee and the construction of a new concrete cart path should be under way by the time you receive this edition of Fairways. As well as the repositioning of the tee closer to the boundary, additional tree planting will take place along the boundary to help reduce the instances of balls leaving the course boundary. The new tee will be approximately four times in size (useable teeing space) compared with the old teeing ground, which will help to share traffic and reduce wear and tear on the teeing ground. Air Conditioning Replacement This project is on track for completion by the end of September 2011. I am pleased to report that disruption to trade and member services to date has been minimal and I thank members for their patience with the inconveniences that have happened from time to time. Large Screen TV and AV Upgrade The large screen video wall TV and Audio Visual upgrade is well underway and this project should be completed by end September 2011. The big screen is now operational and a huge improvement on the old rear projection TV. Focus has now turned to “back of house” functionality of our microphone, speakers and audio system. Castle Hill Charity Golf Day Despite an ominous looking start to the day weather wise, the day stayed fine and was a huge success. In total, over $46,000 was raised on the day from sponsorship, green fees, raffle tickets and auction items. A cheque for $20,000 was presented to MS Australia, our nominated Charity for 2011, and the remainder of the funds will be distributed through the Club’s community grants program.

Dear Members, Since our first edition of Fairways in 2011 we have covered a great proportion of our yearly golfing calendar. Our Championships were played in March/April with the course in its best condition to date – thanks to Martyn Black and his team. Our Champion for 2011 is Jenni Pridmore, runner-up is Julie Cannon and our Nett Champion is Carmel Patrick. Division 2 Champion is Katerina Kim, Lorraine Wilson our runner-up and also our Nett Champion. Regina Jang is our Division 3 Scratch and Nett Champion, Norma Sneddon our runner-up Scratch Champion. In the Veterans category, Julie Cannon is our Scratch and Nett Champion with Marian Van

der Weegen runner-up. Jan Harrison is our Super Vet Champion, Alison Storey runner-up and Mary Geraghty our Nett Super Vet Champion. Our Junior Champion is Isabella Chan and our runner up is Sarah King. Isabella has also been successful in gaining one of the three Elite category scholarships on offer to our juniors. A very well-deserved award for all her efforts and hard work. Diane Shultz and Janet Lien are our 4BBB Knockout Champions with Lesley Jenkins and Celestine Michel our runners-up. Congratulations to all our winners. The Pennant season has now been completed. We should be immensely proud of all our teams and their achievements. Our Grade team has again remained in Grade 2 – an outstanding achievement for the team – a real ‘nail biter’ of a finish. Our junior members, namely Catherine Lee and Isabella Chan, joined forces with Julie Cannon, Raina Laughton, Lynne Papandrea, Jan Harrison, Gail Verdon, Darrie Nightingale, Toni Smillie and Rosslyn Joel to complete a very ‘gutsy’ team. A special acknowledgement also to Dawn Phillips, our team Captain, Helen Howard the Caddie co-ordinator, and of course, to all the wonderful caddies! Our Silver team (pictured right), was comprised of Toni Smillie (Field Captain), Catherine Lee, Raina Laughton, Lynne Papandrea, Marian Van der Weegen, Kendyanne Drummond, Grace SJ Kim, Gail Verdon, Barbara Finn, Rosslyn Joel and Susie Hunt. Alyx Kemp was also able to represent us in one game during the school holiday break. A great finish ladies – well done! Bronze I ladies also held their own (pictured below left). Our team was Barbara Finn (Field Captain), Di Mann, Katerina Kim, Kendyanne Drummond, Danuta Mathieson, Pam MacDonald, Bronwyn Burnett, Jacqui Kahler, Rosslyn Joel and Susie Hunt. The most stable of our teams was Bronze II. They also managed a very respectable third place finish. Judyanne Thrower was Field Captain, with Marie Moylan, Jo Power, Susan Mulligan, Diane Schultz and Jacqui Kahler playing as reserve.

The final team, Bronze III, also did us proud. The ladies in this team were Robin Symons (Field Captain) Margaret D’Arcy, Annette Taig, Sharen Mitchell, Judy Kim, Carolyn James, Claire Compton, Anne Phelan (who managed one game before she broke her leg) and Norma Sneddon – what a reserve weapon to have in your team! A very big thank you to all ladies for availing themselves to participate as a team member – and on many occasions in more than one team! A wonderful opportunity to play golf on the best courses in an harmoniously competitive spirit. Well done to you all! It was also a great opportunity to showcase our own wonderful course to participating clubs and to be able to celebrate the day in “Acres” with first-class service and attention from our professional catering team. Thank you to Susie Hunt for coordinating the season in conjunction with each Field Captain. As you can see by the team numbers, it was indeed quite a task this year! Our Harvey Memorial tournament has now been finalised. Lynne Haynes is our winner, with Val Slattery our runner-up. Thank you Val for your help and guidance towards the newer members involved in the event this year. After a postponement, due to the wet weather, the Silver and Bronze Salvers were played on August 18th. Both Salvers were won by Castle Hill members. The Silver Salver won by Julie Cannon and the Bronze Salver won by Danuta Mathieson. Congratulations ladies, great effort. The Pro-Am returns to Castle Hill on Friday, 25th November. As a result of this late eventuality we are rescheduling our end-of-year programme of presentations and celebrations. The minor trophies will now be presented on Thursday, 17th November. This will be a team event with a shotgun start at 8:30. Friday, 18th November, will now be our Ladies Christmas Party to be held in Acres Restaurant with the presentation of major trophies to be followed by our concert. Our last event for the year will be held on Thursday, 24th November, another 8:15a.m. shotgun start. This will be another fun team event, each player allowed only three clubs of their choice (not to be used by other team members), with the option of dressing up in Christmas paraphernalia!!! The wrap up to the golfing season certainly presents a time to party!

Finally, a warm welcome to our new members and promotional members, namely Michaela Kim, Karen Price and Rose Eustace. We look forward to the opportunity of playing a game of golf with you all. Tammy Hayton Lady Captain

Bronze Team of Team winners (L to R) Kendy Drummond, Danuta Mathieson, Bronwyn Burnett and Di Mann.

Well Known Birds on the Course In this Eco Corner we have selected three well known birds seen on the course. All members would have seen Crested Pigeons feeding on the ground on the course. The seeds of grasses on fairways, trees for shelter and access to water make our golf course ideal habitat for this species. This pigeon is a type of Bronze wing which is evident in this photo. Other characteristics of this bird are a unique squeakiness of its wings, the mixing of rapid flaps and long glides in flight and

sticking up its tail after landing. As it walks, its head moves backwards and forwards like a mechanical toy. The spread of farming in Australia has meant the range of the Crested Pigeon has expanded. Before the mid 1980’s it was uncommon in Sydney. The Spotted Turtle-Dove is an introduced species from southern Asia. It is a commonly seen bird in and around cities and large towns in the more populated parts of Australia. The black band with white spots as the back of its neck is a distinguishing feature. Its call of “coo-wook” is well known. It is another commonly seen ground feeder on the course. Everyone is familiar with the Silver Gull or Seagull. While it is more commonly seen near the coast, its range does extend inland along rivers especially after heavy rain and flooding when food may be more plentiful. It is not a permanent resident at the golf course but has been seen periodically usually on the main dam on the 18th. Adult birds have red beaks and legs while the immature birds have black beaks and legs. Some Snippets: Our list of birds seen on the golf course has reached 100. If you are interested in a copy see one of us. When Paul Wills was trimming trees on the 18th hole a while ago, he was met by a Ringtail Possum

obviously worried about might happen to its hollow. Needless to say Paul moved on. Good to know that possums are out there on the course.

How many times have you said to yourself, “AAAHHH if only I’d kept my head down!” Apparently this is the cure to all of golf's problems. The fact is that too many players get their heads in the way of their swing by burying their chin into their chest, and not allowing themselves any room to move. Remember your shoulders and your chest need to work around your spine, not underneath your chin. Next time you set up, try looking at the horizon as you address the ball. Then drop your head only enough so that you can just see the ball. When you’re hitting, rather than thinking head down, think eyes on the ball. Straight after impact maintain this thought and keep your eyes following the ball, this will help keep your head rotating and give your chest and shoulders the room they need to move towards the target. “DON’T KEEP YOUR HEAD DOWN!” Good luck everyone, eyes on the ball.
