Dear Parents/ Carers,
ROCKETING AROUND THE SCHOOL WITH MR PITT
This week I visited our Kindergarten and Stage 2 EAL/D groups. EAL/D stands for English as an Additional
Language and/or Dialect. Many of our students come from an EAL/D background and our school has
specialist teachers employed to work with EAL/D students across the school.
KINDER EAL/D: On Tuesday I visited Kinder EAL/D class with Mrs Tsioras. The children have been learning about living
and non-living things. This smaller group learning provided the children with an opportunity to focus on strong talk linked
to vocabulary. It was pleasing listening to each child complete various tasks. It is evident that they have all improved so
much since commencing school.
STAGE 2 EAL/D : Last week I visited two sessions of Stage 2 EAL/D with Mrs Sutarov and Miss Michael. Children have
been learning about sea-life and used their knowledge of the recent aquarium excursion to talk about their new
knowledge. The children participated in a fun role play activity focusing on asking and answering questions. Children also
used the correct vocabulary to label a shark. After this we sang a fun shark song and then played shark-tooth bingo.
It is always such fun visiting these intensive classes. Check out the photos in this edition of the newsletter.
GILLAWARNA FESTIVAL
This week the annual Gillawarna Festival took place at Bankstown Sports Club. The festival brings together
schools from the Bankstown and Fairfield area. This year, our choir took part, along with 3 dance groups. I
would like to congratulate the children for their mighty effort at both the matinee and evening show. It was
also great to see many children attending the matinee as audience members. Festivals like these would not
take place if it wasn't for the dedication and energy from our teachers—Mrs Olivera, Miss Mahendra, Miss
Kelleyan, Ms Dale, Ms Berry, Mrs Sloggett and Mrs Li. I would also like to thank the parents/ carers for
allowing your children to take part in such a festival. No doubt you were all proud of the children just like I
was.
SAS STAFF RECOGNITION WEEK—3 SEPTEMBER—7 SEPTEMBER, 2018
Last week we acknowledged the hard work done by School Administrative and Support Staff (SAS Staff) as
part of National Recognition Week. As we know without these hard-working staff members, our school
would not be the organised, safe, supportive environment that it is for us all. We certainly support this year’s
theme—Schools need us! We surprised our SAS Staff all week with different ways of saying thank you.
I will be taking some leave for the rest of the term. Mrs Karam will relieve as principal and Ms Batar as deputy principal.
Have a great fortnight,
Anthony Pitt
Principal

From the Relieving Deputy Principal
Director Visit
Last week we had our Director Educational Leadership Scott Davidson visit
Fairvale Public School. Scott was based at our school for a week and he was
able to visit many classes to see some of the fantastic things we do here at
Fairvale PS. Scott was very impressed with the teaching and learning at
Fairvale PS.
Swimming Scheme
Students in years 2-6 have been participating in Swimming Scheme.
Swimming is an essential life skill to learn and it has been great to see the
smiling faces of our students as they arrive back to school each day.
Tell Them From Me Survey
Selected students in Years 4-6 have been participating in the ’Tell Them From Me’ survey. This survey has been conducted online. It
provides the Department of Education with valuable feedback around teaching and learning. Thank you to the parents who have
participated in the survey too.
Gillawarna
On Wednesday night I will be watching our fabulous students dance in the Gillawarna show. Congratulations to all of the teachers
and students involved. It is a huge effort to put the show together and I can’t wait to see you all perform.

Attendance Matters—What parents/carers can do
Send your children to school every day, starting in Kindergarten, to teach your children that attendance counts.
Don’t let your child miss school without a good reason. Try to avoid medical appointments during the school day or holidays when school is in session.
Create routines and stick to them. Set a regular bed time and morning routine to get ready for school. For older students, be sure they get enough sleep.
Find your own ways to reward good attendance.

ZONE ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
On Monday the 3rd of September, 44 talented
students from Fairvale attended the Zone athletics
at the Crest Oval, Bankstown on a wet and gloomy
day. Despite the weather conditions, we had a very
successful day. It was great to see the encouraging
spirit that the Fairvale community showed as they
cheered on and supported their peers. A special
mention goes to Thomas Koro who made history at
Fairvale by breaking a 17 year long record in the
800m. We must not forget the 11 students who
have been successful in making it through to the
Regional. We look forward to celebrating more
success in the sporting arena at Fairvale. Thank you
to all who attended including our parents and those
who volunteered.

13 September, 2018 Term 3, Week 8
On Wednesday 5th September our School Captains visited
Smithfield RSL to represent Fairvale at the ‘Battle for
Australia’ Commemoration.
The term ‘Battle for Australia’ describes the clash of
varying countries war aims with Australia during World
War Two, producing a series of great battles such as
Battle of the Coral Sea and the Kokoda Campaign.
Our Captains placed a wreath at the memorial to
remember service men and women who had fought and
fallen for our country.

Maddison, Yr 1 and Her Mum, Mandy
“ I love having Maddison at OSHClub! She is here every morning and afternoon, Monday to Friday and for less than $10 a day, she is given breakfast, afternoon tea, gets help with her homework AND gets to make new friends and build up her BIG personality! With her little brother in preschool, it gives me some extra time to get things done around the house and some time to myself. ”

Two Easy Ways To Pay
This week at OSHClub, the children have been obsessed with Hide and Seek and building towards our ‘Theme of the Month’ board, focusing of our Family and Friends. They have had the best time finding new hiding spots and also trying to keep quiet. When someone begins to count, all you here is the running footsteps of all the children and the screams to try and find a good hiding space followed by the constant sound of giggles until they are found.
“I love to explore new hiding places, and squeeze into small spaces.” Valentina, Yr 3.

Lachlan Macquarie College’s Gifted and Talented Maths Competition. Students had an amazing day

to complete challenges. Three teams entered the competition, Team 1 included Daniel, Jeremy, Wilson and
Mariel, Team 2 included Shelby, Jorjuos, Trinity and Jade and Term 3 included Christopher, Julia, Christina
and Derek. Congratulations to Team 2 for coming in second place on the day!
Thank you to Miss Herps, Miss Zanatta and Miss Brady for taking the students on the day.
Kids Committee Fundraiser Kids Committee will be holding a Mufti Day on
Wednesday 19th September 2018.
Students can wear Mufti and make a gold coin donation towards Kids Committee
Kids Committee is a program for children in year 5 and 6. The program teaches the skills of
leadership; providing a platform for students to achieve personal success and to have an impact on
their school environment. The program aims to develop confidence, character, and citizenship in
students. Children are encouraged to utilise these leadership skills by developing and implementing a
project within the school community.
All money raised will go towards their project to enhance the learning environment for all students at
Fairvale.
