Sibling rivalry is accepted as a nor-mal state of affairs. Key life events can bring siblings closer together or drive them apart. It’s no won-der so many parents are shouting “Why can’t my kids just get along?” Melody Matheny-Orpen of VNS and Hospice of Fairfield County will ex-amine this pervasive and troubling phenomenon in this free presentation.

give Cindi Bigelow this signal honor was not a difficult one. A long time supporter of the Center, her many contributions are evident everywhere in the building—from the Bigelow Tea Room to the Center’s Manage-ment Information System and the AV equipment in the Multi-Media Room. “It’s really extraordinary,” Mr. Carter said, “when you have somebody you want to honor while they’re here, and while they’re helping us, so this is very special... so Cindi, we want to thank you so much from our hearts, so much.” And then with great aplomb he unveiled the Bigelow Center’s new sign to a great explosion of applause.

Ms. Bigelow said, “This is really an amazing honor... I’ve learned over the course of time the unbelievable work the Senior Center does.” She went on to say, “I think about the people who are using this center, the seniors, the ones that have raised a family, have worked forty to fifty years, have dedi-

And I have to say for my family, we can’t thank you enough. This is extremely hum-bling—it’s really incomprehensible.” Of the town’s seniors she said, “We need you, we need your wisdom and you are owed so much for everything you’ve done for us... and I want to thank you for making me a part of your family.”

At the conclusion of the event, First Selectman Mike Tetreau said, “Look at this, this is a real community event. This is unbelievable! I’ve never seen this many people from so many differ-ent segments of our community come out to share in a celebration here at the Senior Center. Thank you again to the Bigelows for your leadership, but the highest compliment I can pay is to thank you for making a difference in our community.”

About that Sign. The Center’s new sign combines both traditional and contemporary elements, including raised letters which cast a lovely drop shadow that varies with the angle of the sun. It was designed by volunteer Erikka Brickey, fabricated by ABC Signs and installed by Fairfield’s Department of Public Works. The sign will be lit at night.
