Ciaran Gribban, lead singer of INXS will join the line up at Sydfest this year. Ciaran Gribbin is a Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter from Northern Ireland who has worked with artists including Snow Patrol, Madonna, Paul Oakenfold and Paul McCartney, and written and produced soundtracks for numerous feature films. From 2011 to 2012 Ciaran toured extensively throughout South America, Europe and Australia and recorded new material as frontman of Australian rock legends INXS.

In 2009 Ciaran made the decision to leave his band Leya to concentrate on a career as a solo artist with the freedom to write, record and perform his own songs. He soon found himself working on shows and tours with artists including Paul McCartney, The Script, Gotye, Powderfinger and James Morrison, whilst co-writing with various artists including Groove Armada and William Orbit. 2010 ended with a Grammy nomination for Madonna's worldwide hit single 'Celebration' which he co-wrote with the singer and producer Paul Oakenfold. His songs have also appeared in TV programs from a USA Newsweek series to Australia's Home and Away and Neighbours, and in 2011 Ciaran wrote, recorded and co-produced all of the original songs for the Irish music-based comedy drama Killing Bono starring Ben Barnes and released through Paramount Pictures with a Sony Music soundtrack album.

From the Principal

Ciaran's other film work includes recording, co-producing and performing the songs in Philip Ridley's award-winning dark fantasy movie Heartless starring Jim Sturgess, with a soundtrack album released by Universal, as well as writing and performing two songs for Love and Suicide, the first American movie shot entirely on location in Cuba, and co-writing the main song for the upcoming feature film Imagine starring Al Pacino and Annette Bening.

In May 2012 the BBC flew Ciaran into Belfast from Australia to sing solo with The Ulster Orchestra in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the legendary Ulster Hall for TV and radio broadcast, and in August 2013 Ciaran released his latest single 'My Killer My King'.In June 2014 Ciaran Gribbin signed with UK-based Polar Patrol Publishing as a songwriter. His skills, talent and international experience put him in an ideal place to co-write with and for a wide range of artists and to compose songs especially for TV, ads and movies.

Ciaran has agreed to judge two finalists from a Battle of the Bands on the night and will perform with the winning band providing our students to sing with an internationally renowned singer, songwriter and performer.

I take this opportunity to invite all families to Sydfest 2014, an evening not to be missed as the College once again hosts talent from around the world to inspire and work alongside our students.

This year the Apex Teenage Fashion Awards were held here at Catholic Regional College Sydenham in The Create Theatre. Secondary students from around the State of Victoria came to compete with their innovative fashion designs in a range of categories. The event attracted the likes of fashionista and design expert Mr Henry Roth highly recognised as a judge from the TV program New York Project Runway. As the guest judge at the event he commended all entrants of their creativity. Students Jein Lueth, Josephine Esposito, Frances Go, Alyssa Sammut and Melissa De Matteis from the Year 12 VCE Product Design and Technology Fabrics class entered their final wearable products to compete in the evening wear and casual wear categories, congratulations to all students on an excellent effort. A special congratulations to Jein Lueth who was presented with an encouragement award and a scholarship to the Whitehouse Institute of Design.

From the Principal RECOGNISING STUDENT

Each fortnight in the College Newsletter, we recognise the achievements of many of our 'quiet achievers', those students who should be singled out for the wonderful work they are doing. This fortnight we recognise, celebrate and congratulate the following students:

MacKillop Cluster

The MacKillop Cluster would like to recognise Zofia Kakantonakis as our student of the fortnight. Zofia has provided an amazing level of support for one of her classmates who tragically lost her father last month. Congratulations to Zofia for providing such a wonderful example of the MacKillop values of Faith, Social Responsibility and Service.

Bradman Cluster

Congratulations to Jein on her feathered dress that she entered into the APEX Fashion Awards on the weekend. Jein was given an encouragement award and scholarship to the Whitehouse School of Design.

Chang Cluster

The Chang Cluster would like to commend Jessica Williams (C5) for her contribution to the Performing Arts Scene both in CRC Sydenham and in the broader community. Jessica is a member of Melton Youth Council’s initiative called the North by Northwest Drama Company based in Taylor’s Hill. They will be performing “The War between Love and Hate” this weekend at the Taylor’s Hill Youth Centre. Jessica will be assuming the role of multiple characters displaying her versatility. Jessica has shown the ability to balance her academic workload with her extra-curricular activities as well has her job. Her diligence in making sure that she gives the

very best to every facet of her life is an asset to her. We congratulate Jessica on displaying the Cluster value of Endeavour.

Dunlop Cluster

Anthony has been a consistent active member of the Dunlop Cluster this year. He rarely misses the opportunity to represent Dunlop in cluster sport, and has certainly helped in our effort to maximise points in the O’Reilly Shield. When a volunteer is required he is often first to put up his hand, in particular helping with Dunlop’s term 3 fundraising effort by selling chocolates and raffle tickets at lunchtime. He was also amongst the first to purchase a ‘Weary Dunlop’ badge for charity, after hearing from a member of the ‘Weary Dunlop’ foundation on Cluster Feast Day. Anthony's willingness to help and concern of social justice is a credit to

Dunlop Cluster and the Catholic Regional College community.

Winton Cluster

This fortnight, the Winton Cluster would like to recognise James Sawires. When he is not dedicating hard work and effort to his studies, James is a coach and referee for younger players who are involved with the Keilor Basketball Association. If that wasn’t enough, he is also heavily involved with coach juniors at the Western Eagles Basketball Club. These roles require James to donate a significant amount of his own time for training, games and of course being a referee. James is also dedicated to the Cluster, always attending and participating in Cluster sports. The Cluster continues to thank James for his efforts

for our community and for giving so much to the wider community. Well done, James.

O’Shane Cluster

Jein Lueth

Anthony Camenzuli

Zofia Kakantonakis

James Sawires

Jessica Williams

O’Shane would like to acknowledge Joanna Cuya from O’Shane 5. Joanna has been the tutor leader in O5 from the start of the year. She often eagerly puts her hand up to assist with O’Shane activities. This was especially helpful during the O’Shane fundraising and awareness day a few weeks ago. Joanna was instrumental in organising the set up of the stall. O’Shane thanks Joanna for her hard work and we look forward to see what next year brings.

Seeds of Justice Mercy Camp

On August 21, 6 students - Crystal Limcangco, Alma-Rose Magtanong Patrick Arellano, Kathryn Santiago, Joseph Siveges and Daniel Cvetkovski - journeyed to Anglesea to join other Mercy affiliated schools in attending a Seeds of Justice Camp. Here they heard from 2 guest speakers – Shane Howard and Karon Donellan – who spoke on a range of justice issues both in Australia and around the world. More importantly, they inspired our students to respond to these situations with Compassion and Hospitality so that, on their return to school, this group will initiate activities and ideas that will hopefully change our world. It will begin with the simplicity of just saying ‘hi’ to one person that you don’t know but looks like they could use some cheering up.

From VCAL Faculty

On Tuesday August 19 many of our College community enjoyed an evening of fine food and stellar entertainment thanks to the VCAL Senior group. The Senior class planned and organised every aspect of the evening; from advertising to food preparation. This event formed the first part of the VCAL Senior project where students were tasked with working autonomously to raise funds to carry out a landscaping project at Michelle Newland’s new home. Our students were inspired to help Michelle and felt a Dinner/Landscaping project would best allow them to use the skills they have developed throughout their two years at the College. Many of our Senior Group had never been in a commercial kitchen before this evening, and should be congratulated for the fantastic food they served to our guests. The students worked exceptionally as a team and after a few initial hiccups, all aspects of the evening ran very smoothly. Our students wish to thank Nick, Peter and Kristina in the Trade Training Centre for their guidance and assistance on the night, and a big thank you to our Year 11 VCAL students Kristian Iaccino, Jason Vuluma, Emily Buttigieg & Teresa Ngyuen who serenaded and helped serve our guests respectively. Our Senior group raised a fantastic $1100 on the night and will now spend their remaining weeks at the College designing and finally renovating Michelle’s garden.

SACCSS Soccer

In Term 3, our boys and girls soccer teams have been competing in the SACCSS Soccer competition, with both teams competing in Division 1. With soccer being a significant sport at the College, it made selecting teams a very difficult task with the vast amount of talent on display. Well done to those students who participated, and did so with great distinction, representing the College with great sportsmanship and pride. The girls played 3 matches in total, unfortunately the 4th being a forfeited game by the opposition, and finished with 1 win, 1 loss and a draw. Unfortunately, the girls just missed out in making the Grand Final on goal difference. The girls displayed a great attitude and should be proud of their efforts.

The boys, playing 4 matches, finished with 3 wins and 1 loss, made it through to the Grand Final against St Monica’s. In what was an important match for the boys, they came out firing, attacking with strength and looking to put on a dominant display, but were unable to capitalise on the many chances to score. This lead to be very costly, with St.Monica’s taking their limited chances in attack, and winning the match 4-1. The score line did not reflect the boys efforts, as they fought to the very end. Well done to the boys.

Results for the matches were as follows:

Girls:

vs CCCC (2-0 Win on forfeit) vs St Monica’s (3-2 Loss) vs Marymede (11-1 Win) vs Penola (1-1 Draw)

Boys:

vs Mackillop (7-1 Win) vs St Monica’s (3-2 Loss) vs CCCC (3-2 Win) vs Emmanuel (16-0 Win)

Grand Final vs St Monicas (4-1 Loss)

Yoga – Find your Zen

By Rochae Gauci

Reading your local gym timetable can become a particular confusing task if you’re unfamiliar with yoga terminology and definitions. Bikram, Ashtanga, and Hatha are three different types of yoga classes and are the latest craze in trend setting cities such as Los Angeles and New York City. Celebrities alike have tried them and are proud advocates of these up and coming fitness regimes. Jennifer Aniston, Madonna and Beyoncé have all been said to follow either Bikram or Ashtanga. It all sounds a little mystifying and far from the relaxing, spiritual exercise that we all imagine yoga to be.

So what are these practices? How do they differ from each other? And how will you benefit from them? Let’s take a brief run through the four most famous yoga practices to see what suits you best...

Anusara

Is said to be the most pure form of yoga and one with a sense of humour. Light hearted and not to rigid, this style is perfect for nervous newbies. Anusara is best for mood enhancement and will help you loosen up. This is one of the easiest types of yoga available and won’t push you beyond your physical limits.

Ashtanga

This style of yoga will take you through a strenuous position sequence. Practiced consecutively, the exercise will work its way through six positions. Ashtanga is suited to those with a quite intense personality and accommodates for those who enjoy hard-hitting workouts. It’s great for weight loss and for strengthening your muscles.

Bikram

Currently one of the most popular and trending yoga styles. Simple to explain, it involves a sequent of yoga poses performed in a sauna-like room set to approximately 40 degrees Celsius. The main goal is to sweat – again fantastic for weight loss and for building stamina. Flexibility is the main benefit, as the heat increases so does the likeliness of you being able to touch your toes! Restorative

When most of us think of yoga, we think calmness and relaxation. This style is the type of yoga you were probably imagining. Anyone at any level or age will be able to enjoy this form of yoga. You will feel less stressed and get a chance work on those particular muscles that have been giving you agony. After this workout you will feel like a whole new person.
