The ‘Take Care of Texas’ Quick Guide to RecyclingRecycling allows individuals to give new life to the products

they use. When manufacturers use recycled materials in their products, not only does it conserve natural resources and reduce waste in landfills, it also reduces greenhouse gas emissions through energy savings.

Our national recycling rate is only 34.5 percent annually but is responsible for sending 87 million tons of material to a useful second life instead of the landfill. These recycling efforts save Americans the equivalent of the annual energy consumption of nearly 10 million U.S. households per year and avoids greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions equivalent to removing more than 33 million cars from the road each year.

Another school year has started, and I am seeing the exact same things that I have observed over the last 8 years since I started being a personal chauffer for my kids. Maybe it is just me, but it seems that common courtesy and traffic laws do not apply to parents driving their kids to and from school. School just started this week in my area, and in the past few days of taking my kids back and forth to school, I have encountered countless traffic infractions, near misses, and just blatant ignorance on the part of parent drivers. WAKE UP FOLKS BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT OR WORSE!!!! Many drivers probably do not realize they are even doing anything wrong. What am I talking about………common sense. Here is what I have observed that has the potential to cause serious injury to kids and/or your fellow drivers.

1) Stay off the damn phone. I see no less than 3-4 parents each day chatting away on their phone while taking the kids to school. Within the last two years, I have personally witnessed five separate incidents where chatty parents nearly ran over kids crossing a street on their way to school, all while the non-attentive parent driving a 4000 pound vehicle nearly eliminated the kids future. Put the damn phone down. There is not a single thing in this world that is more important than a kids safety and welfare. The phone call or text message can wait!!

2) Obey traffic laws. School zones are 20 mph or less. Folks are blasting through school areas at 40+MPH. There are tons of kids on the streets, and many do not pay attention and just cross the street where it is convenient. Slow down. It will take you a minute or two extra, but in the meantime, you could save a kid serious injury. There is nothing going on in your world that is worth risking injury to a kid walking to school. Keep your foot off the accelerator and instead, keep it on the brake in school areas.

3) Courtesy at the drop off area. At my kids’ school, there are two doors on the front of the school, a near door and a far door. Parents are supposed to pull forward to the far door so that traffic does not back up. Time and again, I am seeing parents stopping at the first door to drop their kids off, and in reaction to that, they are causing a traffic jam for all the folks behind them. Have some courtesy and common

sense. Your kid needs exercise. Dropping them off at the far door will insure that they at least get some walking exercise in that day, and will not aggravate all the drivers sitting in line behind you.

4)Exiting schools - Believe it or not, one is supposed to stop prior to exiting a school property. Many parents apparently believe this does not apply to them. I pass two schools in my travels each day after dropping my kids off. And at each of them, I have observed both in the morning and the afternoon that parents simply think that the traffic world revolves around them. They pull right up to the exit of the school parking lot, do not slow down, and just pull out onto the main road without hesitation, expecting traffic on that street to stop for them. Are you kidding me? I have had this happen to me personally several dozen times over the years, that have caused me to test the full stopping capability of my brakes. Unbelievable.

5) Stop sign etiquette – At the school where I drop my kid off, there is a T intersection. The side road has a stop sign, and the school entrance is on this side road. The main road has traffic coming from both directions of folks turning onto the side road, but there is no stop sign on the main road. It is funny, because during severe rain, everyone takes turns at this intersection, and treats it as a 3 way stop, letting folks go in turn. However, during sunny days, that courtesy goes out the window. I have personally sat at this intersection for over 10 minutes waiting to get back onto the main road. And unfortunately, there is not an alternate route. Please have some drivers etiquette at intersections such as this during school hours. Even though you may have the right of way, if there is a car waiting to turn onto the main road, pause and let them out. This keeps traffic flowing smoothly. All in all, folks, please use common sense when driving your kids to and from school. There are simply too many chances for avoidable accidents to happen. And if you happen to be one of the parents that are doing one or more of the items listed above…STOP IT TODAY. Think about it…if you hit a kid with your vehicle, how would you feel? So please, use common sense and courtesy to your fellow drivers, not only when taking kids to school, but wherever you are driving.

Cypress residents can strengthen their families, their bodies and an area school all at one fun event this fall.

Cypress 5K Fun Run benefiting the Performing Arts Department at Spillane Middle School kicks off Saturday, November 22nd  at 9:00 a.m. Start times will be staggered.

The event is the school’s first Fun Run, but you don’t have to be a competitive runner to participate. The run, which will go through the Coles Crossing neighborhood, will feature a timed run, a family run for those pushing strollers or wanting to walk, and a dog walking segment as well.

While generating funds for the school’s award-winning Performing Arts programs is important, event organizers want to use this event to strengthen the school’s ties to its community as well as encourage community spirit and fitness.

Early bird registration is underway online and continues until November 8th, which includes the cost of a commemorative T-shirt. From Nov. 9nd registration increases to $35 and a T-shirt is not guaranteed. Late registration, which continues until race day, is $40 and does not include the shirt.

Runners who have pre-registered can pick up their packets Thursday, November 20th from 4:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. at Spillane Middle School at 13403 Spillane Woods Blvd.

To register or donate, visit the Cypress 5K Fun Run & Puppy Parade website at: https://thedriven.net/driven.race_reg/eid/1097014579.

Three areas needing the most help are baseball committee, nightly field maintenance and concessions.  These are opportunities to not only get involved and meet great people, but most of all contribute to making Fairfield one of the best places around for our kids to play sports!

On behalf of the Fairfield Sports Association and the Baseball/Softball committee members, I would like to thank you for all your support.

It’s almost time to applaud Cy-Fair’s educators at the 17th Annual Salute to the Stars Gala. The black-tie, celebratory event to be held on October 16, 2014, at Cy-Fair ISD’s Richard E. Berry Center will honor 86 Spotlight teachers, one from each of the district’s campuses. Dinner, entertainment, live auction and a raffle will be featured as community and business leaders and elected and school officials give thanks to those who give so much to the students in the Cy-Fair district.

Each year in April, Cy-Fair ISD recognizes one teacher from each of its campuses who represents a unique balance of skill, art and heart in teaching students in his or her subject area or program. “Spotlight teachers and their guest as well as the principal and his or her guest occupy spots at the school’s table,” said Lauri Baker, event co-chair. “The remaining four seats are for those who sponsor the table. Table sponsorships start at $1,250; however, there are other sponsor opportunities available as well.”

Not only is the event a celebration of the district’s top-notch teachers, but it’s also a way to showcase the talent of students. “Students will perform a drum line performance, those who have won scholarships from the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation will serve as guest speakers and culinary arts students will serve dinner to guests,” said Baker. “Involving our students in the event is a perfect way to remember why we are all here.”

All proceeds raised at the event go to the Cy-Fair Educational

Foundation which provides college scholarships for district students as well as staff development grants to CFISD. Last year the event raised over $152,000 for staff development grants and student scholarships, bringing the grand total to over $1.8 million raised since 1998.

This year’s underwriter will be Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital.  Also sponsoring in 2014 will be the Cy-Fair Federal Credit Union as the Red Carpet Premiere Sponsor, Bay- IBI Group Architects as the  Superintendent Table Sponsor and Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital as the Teacher Appreciation Sponsor.

Baker, who has been involved with organizing the event for ten years, has worked in the school district for 30 years and also serves on the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation Board. “I love working with such a passionate group of dedicated people who put on this great event,” she said. “It’s really a fun night and people are excited to see each other but also so committed to raise money for the Foundation. The community relationship in our district and the compassion of the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation, that does so much for both students and teachers, is unique and rewarding to be a part of,” she said.

For information about the annual Salute to the Stars gala, contact Marie Holmes at 281-807-3591, or e-mail [email protected].

Perhaps one of the labels Dr. Levy most proudly wears is that of a lifelong learner.  Amazingly, she has five advanced graduate degrees, has worked in all levels of education and has served as an administrator for more than 15 years, with the past five at LSC-CyFair.

However, more important to her than her resume of experience and education is how she approaches life.  “I believe anything and everything is possible with the right attitude…” and as LSC-CyFair celebrates an enrollment milestone with the 20,000th student registered for the fall 2014 semester, Dr. Levy and her staff’s commitment just got more demanding.

“LSC-CyFair was originally built to serve 10,000 students and we have now reached another historical milestone of 20,000. We

have exceeded all expectations and are now four times the size of most community colleges,” said Dr. Levy. “Our rapid growth is testament to the need in our community for high quality affordable education options.”

All are welcome to meet Dr. Levy and learn about the continued growth plans for LSC-CyFair at this month’s CYFEN meeting, which begins with networking at 11 a.m. followed with a prompt 11:30 a.m. start of the program. Monthly meetings are held the fourth Thursdays at the Sterling Country Club, 16500 Houston National Blvd.

Bring business cards for networking. The meeting cost is $25 with advanced reservations

made by the Thursday prior to the meeting and $30 at the door.CYFEN is part of the national organization of American

Business Women’s Association, for more information or to register for the luncheon go to www.CYFEN.org.
