Global Studies Engineering Education Center in St. Louis

The EEC in St. Louis can now provide courses to Rolla based

on-campus students through the VCC allowing qualified adjuncts to

carry some of the teaching load departments are experiencing as a

result of record enrollments.

18 course sections being taught by adjunct faculty from the St. Louis area

414 on-campus students received such instruction during

AY 2008 –2009At least that many should receive classes from the EEC

during AY2009 – 2010.

International Affairs• FS2009 International Student enrollment is 230 students

– Recent comparisons: FS2008 - 211 FS2007 - 172FS2006 - 174

• 40 out of 51 new international undergraduate students are sponsored students. FS2009 enrollment includes the following major sponsors:

– 17 undergrads from ARAMCO (Saudi Arabia)– 5 undergrads from SABIC (Saudi Basic Industries Corporation)– 13 undergrads from University of Botswana: new transfer

agreement– 4 undergrads from Petronas (Malaysian company)

International Affairs• International Student Orientation is for all incoming international

students in F-1 or J-1 student status and includes freshman, transfer, exchange and graduate students.

– Main orientation was held on August 11, 2009 with 136 attendees.

– Due to delays in students obtaining visas and making travel arrangements, two mini orientations were held for those who arrived late:• August 27, 2009 with 17 attendees• September 23, 2009 with 22 attendees

• Hosting Webinar on October 6 entitled “Study Abroad & Student Affairs: Best Practices in Health/Safety.” 24 faculty, staff and students have registered to attend.

Sponsored Programs• FY10 activities through the end of August and a year-over-

year comparison are as follows:

– Proposals awarded in total dollars: $14.7M (up 7.4%)

– Number of proposals awarded and amendments: 65 (down 23.5%)

– Proposals submitted in total dollars: $49.1M (up 85%)

– Number of proposals submitted: 89 (down 21.9%)

– Research expenditures: $9.5M (up 19.8%)

– F&A recovered: $1.7M (up 18.3%)

– Number of active awards: 632 (up 5%)

• Active Learning - Faculty Learning Community- formed with the goal of getting more faculty members involved using Active Learning strategies in their classroom. An ongoing activity that focuses on faculty learning and sharing and is moderated by professionals that promote these instructional strategies. Meeting Info: Every third Wednesday of the month (September - November), 12:00 to 1:00 PM, Norwood 208.

• New! Cyber Learning - Faculty Learning Community- CERTI and EdTech are offering a new faculty learning community this fall covering different “Cyber Learning” areas (Clickers, Blackboard, Wimba, Virtual Learning Environments)Meeting Info: Every first Friday of the month (October – November), 12:00 to 1:00 PM, room to be announced.

Undergraduate Studies Call for Nominations- Faculty Service Learning Award

• Award recognizes an S&T faculty member who involves or influences students in academic service learning or community service activities. All Missouri S&T students, faculty and staff have the opportunity to submit nominations for this faculty award.  • All S&T students, faculty and staff may submit nominations for this faculty award. •Nominations must include a supporting statement (maximum of one page) describing how the nominee involves or influences students in community service or academic service-learning through his or her work with student groups, learning communities and/or classroom instruction. • Nominations may include up to three letters of support from department chairs, colleagues and/or students.  •Nominations are due November 4, 2009. Recipient will be recognized at a campus award ceremony on January 19, 2010.
