Chautaqua course in 1997 and a

weeklong GIS workshop in 1998.

Since being hired by North Georgia

in 1995, he has taught introductory

geology courses 37 times over that

18-year period and is regarded as a

local expert.

He maintains active memberships in

GMS (Georgia Mineral Society) and

the Tellus Science Museum, both of

which keep him current in the field

of geology.

These credentials, in conjunction

with his doctorate in chemistry,

He was nominated for the Pulitzer

Prize in two categories in 2004 for

He is a veteran of the U.S. Marine

Corps, a graduate of the University

of South Florida with a B.A. in Mass

in Criminal Justice, his earning two

The GSTU 4000, General Studies

Senior Seminar, is designed to help

individuals integrate their three

focus areas and learn research

strategies and technologies related

to their focus groups.

In the course students are taught

interview and resume building skills,

to develop a portfolio and to

analyze quality research, among

other things. Dr. Batchelder holds a

Ph.D. in Adult Education with an

emphasis in Educational Research.

His Ph.D. coursework prepared him

to work with adult learners in the

areas of methods and materials in

adult education; program and

curriculum planning; and research

methods.

To assist General Studies students

in making sense of the many

courses they've completed by

showcasing the similarities in the

coursework and curriculum and by

teaching them to identify and

perform quality research in their

area of interest.

His publications in adult education

and technology and higher

education have also provided him a

unique background to teach the

course.

president-elect (2008-2011) for the

Appalachian Studies Association, a

grants that supported the study of

Appalachia and it students, with

grant awards totaled over one

million dollars.

Sampson founded the Georgia

Appalachian Center for Higher

Education and the Appalachian
