When we are talking about the academic environment from Iasi,

we cannot omit one of the oldest institutions of medical education from

Romania, which is University of Medicine and Pharmacy “Gr.T.Popa” Iasi.

What could attract a student to come and mount the stairs of this university?

First it is the tradition, because a university, in order to make

performance, must have strong roots. University of Medicine and

Pharmacy “Gr.T.Popa” Iasi trained many from the founders of the

Romanian medicine, and their spirit still lead this institution’s destiny.

Secondly there are the specializations offered. By its strategy, our university develops curricula with European dimensions, and the certificates obtained in this university are recognized

in all the European Union countries, as well as in many countries outside EU.

Finally it is the humanistic and human coordinates of our university, the hospitality, the

Moldavian kindness, which give a human dimension to the exigency, competence and performance.

I think these are the argument through which our university attract its students and our absolvents remain attached by the institution that trained them.

We invite you to come with us in the following pages, to find who we are, where we are into the Romanian and European academic

space and which is the offer we present to the potential candidates which

want to graduate the dental medicine school from Iaşi.

The arguments we are going to present you are represented by a modern curricula,

revised according to the most exigent European requirements, young and enthusiastic specialists, with an exceptional grounding – confirmed by their scientific results, and a material base similar

from many points of view with those met in the most prestigious universities from the world.

Our academic offer is varied and can satisfy all kind of requests: beside the program of

long-term education (6 years), we have two programs of short-term education (3 years) destined to

prepare the dental technicians and nurses, as well as multiple forms of postgraduate education –

GENERAL PRESENTATION:

The Dental Medicine Faculty Iasi is an academical institution structured and organized in

accordance with modern principles, at the same time being one of the most prestigious faculties of

medical profile in the country – at a regional, national and even international level. The history of

this faculty has been influenced by numerous personalities of the Romanian medicine. Many of its

graduates are representing at present important names for the Romanian and international

Stomatology. Its honorable past and the dynamic and modern present constitute the premises for a

bright future.

The Dental Medicine Faculty of Iasi was created in 1945 as a department of the Medicine

Faculty under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Nicolae Dutescu, being at that time the first faculty of this

profile from the country. Since 1965 it functions as an independent faculty with 6-years full-time

courses. After 1989 and especially since 1992 our faculty has been going through a continuous

developing process, increasing the number of the staff and of the students and modernizing the

specialized clinics endowing them with a modern material basis in accordance with the exigencies

of the third millennium.

The European integration of the Faculty of Dental Medicine, Iasi, is reflected by its

CIDCDF accreditation (The International Confederation of Deans of Total or Partial French

Expression) – the evaluation being made in September 2008 with positive results. Equally, the

Faculty of Dental Medicine was evaluated in 2001 by ADEE (The European Dental Association for

Education), gaining with this occasion the international recognition of its values and achievements.

Our Dean, Prof. Univ. Dr. Norina Forna, is ADEE Ambassador for Romania and member in the

CIDCDF Committee.

DEPARTMENTS AND DISCIPLINES STRUCTURE

The basic entity of the educational activity is the DISCIPLINE, the fundamental structure

of the modern stomatological education system. Each discipline has its own Curricula of lectures

and practical courses, organizes its own examination forms and carries on its research activity. The

disciplines of similar profiles are organized in DEPARTMENTS.

There are three departments in our faculty, which contain the stomatological disciplines: 1. THE SURGICAL DEPARTMENT (DENTO-ALVEOLAR, ORAL

AND MAXILLO-FACIAL SURGERY)

DEPARTMENT CHIEF –

Conf. dr. Irina Zetu

- Dento-alveolar surgery, Anesthesiology in dental medicine,

Oral medicine - Oral and maxilla-facial surgery

- Pedodontics

- Orthodontics and dento-facial orthopedics

2. THE ODONTOLOGY – PERIODONTOLOGY AND FIXED

PROSTHESIS DEPARTMENT DEPARTMENT CHIEF –

Prof. dr. Gabriela Ifteni - Cariology

- Endodontics

- Periodontology

- Fixed prosthesis. Gnathology. Dental esthetics

3. THE IMPLANTOLOGY, REMOVABLE PROSTHESIS AND

TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT

DEPARTMENT CHIEF –

Prof. dr. Monica Tatarciuc

Page 8: Faculty of Dental Medicine

In addition to these there are

also the pre-clinical and medico-surgical

disciplines, which assure the basic

preparation of our students (especially

during the small years) through

specialized academic staff. These

disciplines where traditionally included in

the chairs of Dental Medicine Faculty.

Since 2008, as a consequence of a

restructuration process achieved in our

University in order to fulfill the European

criteria, these disciplines were unified

with the equivalent disciplines of the

other faculties in order to make unique

disciplines and departments in the

University. This is the case of the

following disciplines, included now in

unique structures coordinated by the

Faculty of Medicine:

Course coordinator - Anatomy and clinical anatomy Conf. dr. Puişoru Mihaela

- Anatomy - Embryology Conf. dr. Indrei Anca

ACADEMIC CURRICULA:

Before 1990 the academic curricula had a very simple structure being made of just four

basic stomatological disciplines: Odontology-Periodontology, Prosthetics, Maxillo-Facial Surgery

and Orthodontics.

The most important and radical curricular re-organization of the

Romanian educational system for Dental Medicine was initiated in 1992 and

put into practice for the first time at the Dental Medicine Faculty of Iasi.

Consequently, the implementation of the most modern curricular structure also

used in European universities succeeded in Iasi. However this achievement

would not have been possible without maintaining close relations of co-

operation with the most prestigious institutions of similar profile from Europe.

The Academic Curricula has the following main characteristics:

The dental medicine education is modern

and integrated, the achieved knowledge

being evaluated through Transferable

credits, in a similar way with the

transferable credits system used in the

EU;

Ensuring an adequate training in the

Fundamental Biological Sciences field;

The students’ training in the field of the

basic General Medicine Disciplines is also

provided with the purpose of offering them

the necessary knowledge of general

pathology;

The proper ratio LECTURES/PRACTICAL

COURSES is observed;

Specialized training is carried out through

the agency of different modern

stomatological disciplines;

Special attention is paid to the Communitarian and Preventive Dental Medicine disciplines;

Within the framework of the restorative disciplines the oral and functional rehabilitation is

stressed;

The students’ training is carried out through the Simulation method with the purpose of

developing their practical abilities;

In the sixth year of study there has been implemented an integrated lectures and training

system – Oral Rehabilitation and other.

The disciplines are grouped in 2 categories, each

of them having a well established proportion in

the general plan of student education:

62% stomatological disciplines;

38% medical, surgical and fundamental

disciplines.

We have diversified the main directions of the Romanian Dental

Medicine educational system introducing for the first time new disciplines in

the Curriculum like for example: Stomatological Ergonomics, Biomaterials,

Bioequipments, Gnathology, Implantology, Communitarian Stomatology,

Management, Dental Esthetics.

An important objective of the didactic process is represented by the modification of the

names and the curricula of the disciplines in accordance with the West-European educational

system. This way, if 10 years ago there were 10 disciplines, in 2003 we have reached a number of

51 disciplines as a result of the introduction, for the first time in Romania, of several new

disciplines in accordance with the European standards – and this reorganization activity continues,

having as main objectives the permanent remodeling and adaptation.

ADVANTAGES:

A complex Curricula, integrated,

modular, oriented towards the

students’ needs;

The continuity of the educational and

evaluation process;

The permanent adaptation using the

positive feed-back from the students

part;

The teaching is carried out with small

groups of students which allows a

better training of each student and

also a better supervision;

Providing the premises for the

continuous education;

The Socratic approach of the teaching

and educating process (the student

must find out for himself the correct

answers to the question problems he

is asked by directing him through well

chosen additional questions);

Realistic self-assessment.

INNOVATIONS AND POSITIVE

RESULTS:

New methods of evaluation;

New teaching / learning methods;

Emphasizing the acquisition of clinical competences;

A general and complex image of the

stomatological pathology is created;

Keeping an open relationship between

students and professors is encouraged; Stress is laid upon the developing of the

educational exchange programs;

The total management was initiated

through the involvement of the academic

staff in solving the organizational and

administrative problems of the faculty; The students are being supervised during

their entire theoretical and practical training,

throughout the academic year, and their

knowledge level is being evaluated by final

exams which are carried out in the presence of examination commissions.

Page 16: Faculty of Dental Medicine

The education process lasts

28 weeks with a number of 30 hours

per week; the holydays are programmed

for Christmas and Easter.

Courses start on the 1st of

October and end on the 25th of June.

During this period of time independent

modules are also integrated; there are

two exams sessions, the winter session

(27th January – 18th February) and the

summer session (16th June – 25th July).

Between the 1st and the 30th

of August summer practice is carried

on. Students work in medical centers

from Iasi, other cities or even abroad.

ADMISSION – CANDIDATES SELECTION

PROCEDURE:

Any person who has graduated high-school and obtained a Graduating Diploma can be

admitted to our faculty. The Romanian high-school graduates are admitted to the Dental Medicine

Faculty of Iasi after a competitive written examination consisting of a written thesis in Biology OR

Organic Chemistry (the same for all specializations – long-term 6-years studies or short-term 3-

years studies). The written theoretical examination is of grid-test type and consists of multiple-

choice questions and the admission examination takes place in the course of July.

The average mark of the four high-school years and the average mark

obtained at the graduation examination are also taken into account in the

calculation of the final average mark for the admission examination.

The admission of the foreign candidates takes place after the admission examination for

the Romanian candidates.

DURATION OF THE STUDIES:

Undergraduate studies: 6 years

Postgraduate studies:

Masters Degree: 1 – 1,5 years (2 or 3 semesters)

Doctoral Studies: 4 years (Doctoral School)

Residency, depending on specialty: 2 - 5 years

Competences: 1 year

Postgraduate specialization: 1 – 6 weeks

Page 18: Faculty of Dental Medicine

EXAMINATION FORMS:

The modular educational system implies the division of the educational process into

modules corresponding to each discipline.

On the whole, throughout the studies period, the

student gathers a number of 360 transferable credits, 60 credits for

each year of study. Promoting from one study-year to another is

permitted only if the exams which were not passed sum up a total

of 15 credits at the most.

The number of credits granted to each discipline may

vary from one academic year to another depending on the

modifications of the analytic schedule, on the importance of the

discipline for the educational process and on the time needed for

the competent knowledge to be stored in an adequate manner.

This kind of system eliminates the

notion of equalization and allows the

conclusion of collaboration agreements

between our faculty and other Dental Medicine

faculties of the country (Bucharest, Timisoara,

Cluj-Napoca, Târgu-Mureş, Craiova,

Constanţa, Oradea).

The exams are meant to confirm the carrying out of the aims and objectives for each course.

Examination forms:

projects, written, oral or practical exams

graduation exam and defence of the diploma paper

The practical exam assesses the practical abilities of the

students and their manual dexterity using:

- The clinical case presentation;

- The student is asked to carry out a technical

procedure, to execute a clinical activity or to make an

interpretation of data.

The valuation of the theoretical knowledge is carried

out through a written paper formulated in one of the

following manners:

- two or three questions of the short essay type;

- ten questions with a short answer;

- MCQ tests in various variants.

In our University we are using more and more the MCQ tests (multiple choice questions) at

the theoretical exam, which takes place simultaneously with all the students within the same year

of study. This sort of examination is totally objective, because the papers are scanned and verified

using the computer, and it is used for all the pre-clinical disciplines in the 1st and 2nd year of study

and for 2 clinical disciplines in the superior years of study.

The compensation between the written paper and the clinical exam is not allowed.

The students are evaluated with

marks between 1 and 10, the

minimal mark for passing being 5.

1 – no answer;

2 – very weak answer;

4 – under satisfying;

5 – over the passing limit;

6 – satisfying;

8 – good answer;

10 – excellent and complete

answer.

Page 19: Faculty of Dental Medicine

All the methods of valuation we use have been chosen in order to allow the students to

obtain a realistic feed-back regarding the educational process, so that they would be able to

discover their deficiencies and to find the most adequate methods to correct them.

Since 2009, within our Faculty we opened Study Programs in English and French, where

students from the entire world can apply.

After finishing the two study-cycles the student is evaluated by the License/Graduation Exam in order to obtain the Doctor in Medicine title (MD).

The Graduation Exam consists in 3 stages: - Theoretical exam - grid test; - Practical exam;

- Diploma Paper.

The DIPLOMA obtained after graduating

from the Dental Medicine Faculty of Iasi is

acknowledged by the Romanian Ministry of

Education as well as by the specialized instances

of other countries: member states of the EU, USA,

Canada (since 2007), Egypt, United Emirates of

Arabia, Germany, Greece, India, Jordan, Iraq,

Iran, Israel, Kuwait, Libanon, Marocco, Oman,

Qatar, Syria, Sudan, Sweden, Tunis, Turkey and

Yemen.

MEDICAL ASSISTANCE – MATERIAL

BASIS

Page 40: Faculty of Dental Medicine

MEDICAL ASSISTANCE:

The entire period of practical training of the students is

carried out in the Dental Clinics, in which the members of the

academic staff offer dental services to population. After a very

detailed assessment, if students have proved both excellent

theoretical knowledge and manual dexterity necessary for certain

specific dental procedures, they may have their own patients.

During the practical training, students are required to

gather documentary evidence from the specialized literature on

different specific issues, to make their own opinions as regards these issues and to back them up

with pertinent evidence. This work method is very important in the clinical activity, in which

establishing the plan of treatment must be underlain on a well-documented scientific basis.

This working method is very important in the clinic activity, because the treatment plan

establishing must be based on a well-documented scientific background.

An important aspect within oral health programs represents prevention. In this sense, at

the level of different clinical specialties within our faculty there are frequently organized programs

of popularizing oral hygiene regulations and dental prevention in schools, kindergartens, hostels,

etc. Within these programs, students perform an active role during the practical training.

The programs of practical training, both clinical and didactic, are being constantly

modified in order to meet the continuously changing community needs. The students practical

training is permanently achieved in the framework defined by the physician / nurse / dental

technician triplet; in this way the students can understand better the global image of what means

the profession of “stomatologist” – aspects systematically found in the curricular program.

CLINICAL FACILITIES:

The Faculty of Dental Medicine from Iaşi

holds its activity in a few main locations. The most

important one is the new Dental Medicine

Education Base, situated on the M. Kogalniceanu

Street, no. 9, in the very neighborhood of the

Bioengineering Faculty location.

This location joins all the clinic and

technologic disciplines into the same building,

showing the interdisciplinary character of these

specialties and covering all the requirements of the

graduate, as well as the postgraduate studies –

organizational concept entirely original at national

level.

Page 41: Faculty of Dental Medicine

THE NEW BASE FOR MEDICAL EDUCATION FOR THE STUDENTS OF DENTAL

MEDICINE FACULTY is a location that can be compared with any other similar space of the

European universities.

This is the first Romanian model of educational base, achieved according to a project

based on a entirely original idea, which respects the highest European exigencies. The space

is designed and compartmented in such a way so the patients circuit takes place according to

the European Union standards, stimulating the practical – integrative character (clinic,

technologic, didactic and for research), in the permanent presence of physician / nurse /

dental technician triplet.

The building is new, being officially open in May 2007, and offers the necessary

infrastructure of a competitive education, at the highest standards and a rigorous medical

assistance – materialized through the contract with the Health Assurance House, which refers to

all the physicians / teaching staff which work in this institution. Its main objective is to assure to

our students the approach of a comprehensive therapeutic algorithm, correlated with simulated

and clinical aspects and not eluding the modern technologies – essential directions for a high

quality medical act, according with the European requirements.

The endowment of the Medical Education Base at European level, and the implementing, in

national premiere, of a clinic information system with multiple facilities – recording the patients

clinic data in intranet system, images processing and storage and free access to Internet –

contributes to create a valuable informational database and to develop a prestigious medical

activities.

The modern methods for data transmission, based on video and audio connections

between the spaces allocated for patients treatment and the faculties amphitheaters and

Page 42: Faculty of Dental Medicine

materialized into a television system with closed circuit, help our teachers to explain easier and

better the theoretical notions, gaining extra time for the students practice. These elements also

create the proper environment to set up clinic demonstrations of high performance,

videoconferences and telemedicine projects, assuring the bidirectional connection between the

consulting room where the stomatological procedures take place and amphitheaters. This method

of education for students, as well as graduates (during the postgraduate lectures), based on video

transmission in real time, in detail and fully interactive in the whole faculty, much superior to the

inert power-point course presentations and engaging directly the auditorium in the interventions

made by the team of dental physicians – not only by simply viewing and observing, but also by

asking questions and adding comments, is unique in our country and superior even to the

endowments present in some famous faculties in Europe.

The presence of the two simulation units, as well as the three consulting rooms, for

implanto-prosthetic rehabilitation, dento-alveolar surgery and dento-periodontal surgery are

also strong arguments for the high quality education, according to the European standards, which

takes place in this location.

The three laboratories dedicated for the Diploma Paper preparation complete the

existent infrastructure.

Page 43: Faculty of Dental Medicine

Because nowadays the clinic success is highly correlated with the performances of the

biomaterials used and the technological methods, the laboratories offer the possibility to use new

materials for prosthesis achievement, the substance loss being solved by applying epithesis.

Between the modern paraclinic non-invasive methods, we give a special prevalence to

the CRT (Computer - Reglatory Thermography), which draws the main coordinates of the

pathology-oriented specific exams and defines the epidemiological model of the clinical cases,

useful in the future scientific research. Previously used in medical imagery, for the early detection

of breast cancer, this method is successfully used in our educational base to study the oro-dental

diseases, and improves the diagnosis precision and accuracy. The heat from the skin surface is

converted in digital signal displayed on a computer screen; this signal is analyzed, gaining in this

way information about the metabolic activity in different areas of the body, and showing clearly the

normal aspects, as well as the inflammatory or degenerative processes.

The consulting room for implanto-prosthetic rehabilitation is one of the best equipped

from Iaşi city and the whole country, being connected through the base’s television system with

closed circuit to the amphitheaters where the didactic activity takes place. This consulting room

has all the necessary endowment to achieve stomatological interventions highly accurate and

complex and fulfill all the sterilization requirements necessary for a space well-fitted to make

sophisticated surgical interventions in the maxilla-facial area.

Therefore in this consulting room we made live surgical interventions from the

implantology domain, using also revolutionary methods – the KOS implants, non-traumatic, with

limited bleeding, gingival insertion and immediate loading – which gives ergonomy to the developing

of therapeutic stages, cut short the times with a few months and allows to the patient to return to a

normal life much faster.

The intervention was transmitted in real time in front of an auditorium made from

physicians participating to our postgraduate lectures and this was for them an unique experience

and opportunity, which cannot be found nowhere else in our country and situates our possibilities

at the level of the most prestigious universities in Europe.

Page 44: Faculty of Dental Medicine

Between the last-hour endowments of implanto-prosthetic rehabilitation consulting room

we notice the existence of the EasyShade Clinical Spectrophotometer – precision digital system

to investigate the dental color, which guide the student and then the practitioner to record

accurately these elements, an intrinsic condition to obtain prosthetic restorations of high exigency.

The system is compatible with 3D Master Shade Guide, an important facility being also the

multiple options availability. In this way it become possible to record, at the level of a single tooth,

Page 45: Faculty of Dental Medicine

the differences of nuances in its structure – which gives naturalness to the ulterior prosthetic

restorations.

The system is easy to use, with touch-screen accessible menus for the nuances analysis, it

is not affected by the surrounding illumination conditions and it is capable to detect around 97

different nuances in a few seconds.

The consulting room for dento-

alveolar surgery is meant for the maneuvers

characteristic in this specialty, and assures the

specific training in endodontics, periodontology

and dental prosthetic. The endowment of this

space allows to achieve all the specific

interventions, starting from the basic tooth

extraction and ending with the reshaping of soft

and hard tissue supporting the teeth, biopsy

and removal of simple cysts and other lesions of

the mouth and the management of oral

infections.

The space is equally used during the

practical works with students, as well as for

real time demonstrations, being also connected to the audio – video system of the medical

educational base.

A special attention is paid inside the Medical Education Base to the treatment of

patients with disabilities; we have individualized consulting rooms and a specialized service for

them. We also have the endowment necessary to transport these patients – elevator and

wheelchair. Our stomatologists have the specialized background necessary to approach these

cases, the systems of oral prosthesis being chose according with the disability type. A relevant

sample is represented by the patients with different types of disabilities at the level of superior

members, where the election solution for removable prosthesis is represented by flexible prosthesis.

The presence of modern and fully equipped resuscitation system, inherent for the

emergencies interventions, is another vanguard endowment of the Medical Education Base. The

Page 46: Faculty of Dental Medicine

emergency kit allows to approach and to solve the most complexes clinical situations, being

composed from the following elements:

Oxygen cylinders – 4 l capacity, oxygen pressure reducing system MD 500,

humidifier, mask and inhalator;

Ruben balloon – made in silicone, with pressure reducing system;

Guedel pipes – different sizes;

Tracheal catheter made in sterilisable rubber

Kave Economy laryngoscope

Folding ambulatory bed

The educational base also benefits of one of the most advanced sterilization system,

aspect which leads to the treatment development without contamination risks, giving safety and

comfort to the physicians, as well as to the patients. There are a few Stericell drying ovens with

forced convection which, because of the specific system for air ventilation on a spiral path, allows

to obtain an homogenous temperature and reduced times for heating. The system’s safety is

guaranteed by the doors automated control and the special programs for sterilization. The

sterilization rooms are also equipped with UV air purifiers and kits to pack the medical

instruments in vided bags, which fully correspond to the highest standards in this domain.

Page 47: Faculty of Dental Medicine

The compartmented system of dentistry boxes offers privacy to the patients, as well as

a rigorous distribution of the students during their stages, increasing their possibility to have a real

contact with the patients under treatment.

We pay a special attention in our Medical Education Base for the Center of Formation

Specialists and Resources in Oral Rehabilitation, the first center in Romania with this

specific, founded through a project with European Funds, which gives the optimal framework to

materialize the training – research (production) – clinical application trinomial for students,

resident physicians, PhD students and physicians that attend different forms of postgraduate

studies. Between the last-hour technologies available in this Center we enumerate:

Pletismography: Vascular Doppler with

ultrasound emission: It is a bidirectional

analyze system, with FFT analysis (Fast

Fourier Transformation), designed to record

waveforms for the blood flow pressure. The

apparatus works with a 10 MHz probe – that

contains a piezoelectric crystal which, after

initial charge using electricity, utters

ultrasounds in order to record the blood flow.

The obtained data are sent to the central unit

for digital processing, display and print. The

method is non-invasive, without risks during

the analysis and can be used as initial test in

order to depict some diseases. The records are

made at the level of jugal mucous where the

facial artery has superficial localization, and

the following parameters are recorded: the

pulse index, the resistance index, the

maximum speed of blood flow, the heart

beatings and the systolic – diastolic ratio. The

system has automatic gain and baseline

control – so no manual adjustments are

Page 48: Faculty of Dental Medicine

required – being efficient as well as simple to

use.

Ozone therapy - Ozonytron: This is a

noninvasive, nonspecific, painless therapeutic

system, without adverse reactions,

recommended in endodontic, periodontal or

odontal diseases and having also successfully

results in the diseases of temporo-mandibular

joint. The oxidative properties of ozone combat

the microbial infections, this therapy being

also recommended for patients with severe

liver diseases and allergies at antibiotics.

Ph – metry: It is an adjuvant method

necessary for the therapies scientific approach,

in correlation with the salivary Ph type for each

patient and the dose of Ca, F and Mg ions. The

system is equally useful in order to obtain the

epidemiological model, with deep impact in the

stomatological practice, as well as in the

research field.

The Epithetik Kit: contains different

types of silicone for the structure and

the makeup of maxilla-facial prosthesis,

with the purpose to obtain a good

integration of the prosthetic substitute

at facial level.

The Medical Education Base also contains a very modern Radiology Service, equipped

with the most performant devices, which correspond entirely to the European standards.

Page 49: Faculty of Dental Medicine

THE UNIVERSITARY LABORATORY OF THE DENTAL MEDICAL

EDUCATION BASE

The universitary laboratory of the Dental Medical

Education Base is also endowed with modern technologies,

which guarantees the achievement of high quality

prosthesis, with the newest and the best materials.

In the laboratories of the Medical Education Base

we make metalo-ceramic and metalo-composite crowns

and bridges with excellent esthetics, cast removable

prosthesis with cast clasps and with a wide range of

attachments.

The segment of social prosthetics is also covered

- removable partial and full dentures, for retired, patients with disabilities and young people under

the age of 18.

The laboratory apparatuses allow to achieve metal-free prosthesis: all-ceramic or all-

composite.

The laboratory endowment was made with devices and materials necessary to follow

accurately all the technologic stages specific to the working algorithm: different systems for making

One of the main achievements of our faculty during the last years is represented by the

winning of three projects with structural European funds, which are developed in order to

modernize the dental medical education process

and to raise it to the highest European standards

of quality. These three projects are interrelated,

combining the theory and the practice as well as

the didactic act with the last-generation

endowments. These projects will allow to

materialize the first integrated curricula of

dental medicine, unitary at national level. We

will implement in Iaşi the first Pilot Center of

Formation Specialists and Resources in Oral

Rehabilitation – cutting-edge field in dental

medicine, which introduces in Romania for the

first time the most modern methods of

education in the world – telemedicine systems

and computer-assisted simulation. The efficacy of

the obtained results will be evaluated through the

partnership with an abroad university, “Johann

Wolfgang Goethe” – Frankfurt, which will create

the adequate framework for a permanent

adjustment according with the European

exigencies.

Page 55: Faculty of Dental Medicine

Didactic performances under the sign of new, European

standards, avant-garde and interactivity:

The introduction in the Romanian medical

education of the periointegration concept,

complex concept which gives viability to the

implant-prosthetic solutions; its basis are found

in fundamental researches regarding the

deposition of active hydroxyapatite on the implant

surface, research subject included in the national

CNCSIS grants.

Beginning with the interrelation theoretical

preparation – practical applicability, the dental

physician – dental technician – medical

assistant trinomial was introduced in the

medical education and the Education Clinical

Base functional as well as, for the first time in

Romania, in the Iaşi Dental Medicine Faculty

curricula; these aspects lead to a competitive

dental care activity, connected to the exigencies of

the European Union.

The introduction of the concept of minimal

invasive diagnosis and therapy which is found

between the noninvasive diagnosis methods

(computerized thermography or alternative

methods for treatment - laser) in the students

curricula – master studies.

The introduction, for the first time at national

level, of the population screening regarding the

oral status correlated with the general health

status, in order to implement a national

prophylactic program for adults. We created The

Day of Prophylaxis, at regional level (Moldova),

which offer the appropriate framework to quantify

the population health status and sanitary

education level, and to share free of charge oral

hygiene products and documentation materials.

The implementation of the concept of computer

assisted simulation by bringing in faculty the

specific equipment available only in a few top

international universities (USA and only 2

European universities) through the European

project „Strategies of practical preparation for

the quick integration on the labor market of

Page 56: Faculty of Dental Medicine

the students specialized in dental medicine”,

contract no.: POSDRU/90/2.1/S/63942.

The introduction in the usual study methods of

the virtual library through the European project

„Adaptation of the superior dental medical

education offer to the labor market needs and

the knowledge - based society”, contract no.:

POSDRU/86/1.2/S/63699.

The providing of a functional endowment

unique in Europe, comparable with similar

Universities from Canada and USA, with boxes

system, computer in each box and modern

methods to transmit the information, based on

the video and audio connection between the

spaces reserved for the patients treatment and

the faculty’s amphitheaters, through a TV system

with closed circuit.

The acquisition through European fund of the

last – second technologies, instead some

common acquisitions in the same domain. Some

relevant examples are the computerized

axiography, the ROBODENT system (POSDRU

Project, contract no. 62208), as well as the

computer assisted simulation systems.

actions to correlate this at the

European demands.

Page 74: Faculty of Dental Medicine

„There are Romanians who have never been to

Iaşi, although there shouldn’t be any, ‘cause the one

who hasn’t been here cannot cover with

understanding the pages of the most beautiful

chronicles, one cannot fully impregnate with decency

by the spirit of our past more alive and richer than

anywhere else. In his national consciousness there

would be a lack, if he did not see the city that was

and still calls itself today proudly the Capital of

Moldavia”.

Nicolae Iorga

The city of Iaşi does not belong only to the people from Iaşi. It has the rare and hard to be

obtained privilege to be everyone’s. It is not only the metaphysical fortress of the bells, hillocks,

monuments, ineffable twilights, but also, probably, the city with the most numerous museums and

poets per capita from the South-Eastern Europe.

Living in Iaşi itself is a privilege. It is

overwhelming also through the things that now

represent only memories: The Grand Theater

from Copou, The Royal Court, The Mihăileana

Academy.

There is here a well done work

tradition, beyond the fallacious appearances.

By all it has, it represents a real national

library, discreet and expressive part of the

European and universal library .

Page 75: Faculty of Dental Medicine

Immortalized in countless engravings in

various hypostases, the city enters the

conscience of the people by the inspired quill of

the foreign travelers - that is why the never tired

Bandini compares it in 1647 even with a “new

Rome”.

Famous scholars and bishops,

historians and artists, archeologists and writers

have created and breathed in this city during

better or tougher times.

Being one of the oldest and important

settlements in these parts, the Dacian

civilization, followed by the Greek, Roman and then the Byzantine civilizations, conferred the city a

first rang role in the commercial relationships between the Northern and Eastern Europe, on the

one hand, and the Black Sea basin, on the other hand. Against the background of commercial and

artisan’s development the spiritual-Christian life also flourishes with powerful culture centers,

owning an invaluable patrimony (churches, schools, monasteries).

Crossed in turn by Ottoman, Russian or

Austrian troops, ground of the battle for influence,

here, in the surroundings of the Tartars, the City of

Iaşi withstands these events even if often destroyed

by flames or plagues.

The City of Iaşi has also the merit of having

started the 1848 Romanian Revolution, affecting

later on the entire territory inhabited by

Romanians. It was here where the 1859 Union was

settled and the Union Museum and Square evoke

and preserve the burning spirit of the ancestors

eager of national unity and ancient faith

perpetuation.

Page 76: Faculty of Dental Medicine

The Iasi Period of Junimea (Cultural society with Literary Club, printing house, modern

cultural program - 1863 – 1883) is the most prodigious one from the national literature history.

The inter-war period represents another peak moment of the great destinies, buildings and

loves of the city of Iasi, primarily supported by the intellectuals from the Society of Viata

Romaneasca Magazine. Shape diversities, decorations, „art nouveau” and “neo-Romanian” style

merge in a particular, expressive synthesis. At the end of the second World War, the city was

considered by many people an “ended poem”, a “milestone”. Clean city, with old and beautiful

houses where there still can be found quiet streets filled with vegetation, the city of Iaşi is very

similar to the smaller towns in Northern Italy – such as Livorno, and Pisa in particular.

Page 77: Faculty of Dental Medicine

When climbing the Copou Hill, another dimension of the city is revealed: luring and calm

as dusk in May, the city of Iasi is revealed as a city of tile flowers, full moon rays, poetry and

legends that we heard about from our ancestors.

The oldest Botanical Garden in Romania

exhibits reach and valuable collections -

especially the tropical plants, cacti and carnivore

plants green houses which represent special

attractions.

The Copou Park with Eminescu’s Tile

and the Romanian Literature Museum offers a

holy meditation moment, where each year is

organized in June the “Tile Fest” which became a

tradition.

Another recreation area from the city

of Iaşi is Ciric, a necklace of four lakes that

discharge slightly into Bahlui, tenderly

shielded by luxuriant vegetation at whose

shelter, combining classic with modern, the

coffee shops and open bars are hospitably

waiting for their guests.

For the ones interested more in the actual realities, the city of Iaşi has also specific

attractions.

Page 78: Faculty of Dental Medicine

The economic and social life of the city beats in the same rhythm of other great cities of

the country, the city of Iaşi being the second city from the country according to the inhabitants’

number. The region, whose main exponent is, namely the North-Eastern part of the country,

stands for a region with high development potential whose value is really revealed once with

Romania’s integration into the European Union.

Thus, there are still latent and unexploited business opportunities and development

possibilities that can be found here and which could be attractive for the investors.

You also have many choices to spend your free time – in restaurants, clubs and cafes –

elegant, intimate or modern – where you will find quality services, next to the traditional moldavian

ospitality and warmness.
