In addition, academic staff from three Departments in other institutions:

• Johns Hopkins• UNC• UCLA

Page 14: Faculty Council Meeting & Town Hall - McGill

Questions Asked1- The frequency, length and nature of Departmental staff meetings

2. Whether there is a departmental newsletter, and if so, how often it appears

3. Whether you have a semi-annual or annual retreat -its length, location and format

4. Any other method used for communication in your Department

5. Any suggestions on what you would like to see as improvements to the current communication strategy in your Department

Page 15: Faculty Council Meeting & Town Hall - McGill

Findings1. Department meetings held from monthly to yearly,

last ~2hrs (1-2hrs), sometimes minuted, student participation variable, agenda set by Chairwith some input.

2. About half have a newsletter, published from monthlyto once every 2 years. Content often appears to be for “outsiders”. Others had one but lost it due to financial constraints

3. About half have retreats from 2 half days yearly to once every two years. Used as research day by some and Departmental business by others.

Page 16: Faculty Council Meeting & Town Hall - McGill

4. Other means of communication: - Emails, seminar reminders, job announcements, hallway discussions. - Departmental websites are more or less well-maintained due to lack of personnel/financial support from Faculty. - Facebook or Twitter used by only 1 department.

Findings

Page 17: Faculty Council Meeting & Town Hall - McGill

5. Suggestions:- more regular, monthly, minuted staff meetingswith “to do” items.- make funds available for quarterly newsletters that emphasize internal departmental activities (pubs, grants, awards etc…).- make funds available for maintaining informative websites.- create spaces for gathering – exchanging of ideasamong staff and students.

Findings

SUMMARY OF THE SITUATION

• Transition period of the leadership of the MUHC

• Anticipated nomination: Dr. Lawrence Rosenberg,

• Current director of CIUSS Centre-Ouest (includes Jewish General Hospital)

• His idea: merging the MUHC, CIUSS Centre-Ouest and CIUSS de l’Ouest

• Total of 10 hospitals (McGill Academic Network) and over 80 service points

• Health minister Gaetan Barrette : approved the idea in the media

• Timeline… 3 to 5 years ?

• Impact on clinical practice and organization of departments?

Page 27: Faculty Council Meeting & Town Hall - McGill

OUR CONCERNS

• 1) Workload and number of calls

• 2) Multi-site coverage and transportation time

• 3) Dilution of teaching

Page 28: Faculty Council Meeting & Town Hall - McGill

POTENTIAL BENEFITS

• 1) More research opportunities

• 2) Increased clinical exposure

• 3) A solution to the decreasing number of specialty residents and call

scheduling?

• 4) Improved communication, information-sharing and patient transfer

• 5) A solution to the administrative barriers faced by residents.

Developing a strategic plan

Page 38: Faculty Council Meeting & Town Hall - McGill

What should we focus on?

• SWOT online survey– Education Leadership Council

• Qualitative methods– Themes emerged– 8 potential strategic goals generated

Page 39: Faculty Council Meeting & Town Hall - McGill

What is strategic?

1) Educational research2) Student engagement3) Interprofessional, interdisciplinary4) Integration of technologies5) Assessment & evaluation6) Lifelong learning7) Local and global/international education8) Recognition and value

Page 40: Faculty Council Meeting & Town Hall - McGill

Faculty needs & priorities

Online faculty survey (8 goals) June 27 – July 18, 2016360 responses; up to

150 comments/question– Current performance– Priority for the Faculty

• Sample characteristics:– 53.9% male– All ranks well represented– 53.1% from health care

settings– 48.9% provide graduate

supervision

Page 41: Faculty Council Meeting & Town Hall - McGill

Results: Faculty survey

• Performance– 4.2-4.8 (median 4.0-5.0)– Lowest mean/median

• Interdisciplinary; interprofessional• Assessment and evaluation• Recognition and value

• Priority– All 8 highly rated 5.7-6.2 (medians 6.0-7.0)

Page 42: Faculty Council Meeting & Town Hall - McGill

Results: Faculty survey

• SDs small• Differences between groupsAssociate Professors generally rated questions

lower and Faculty Lecturers generally rated questions higher than group as a wholeMean ratings generally higher for those in health

care settings or university health professions programs; lower for basic sciences or centres/institutes within the universityBasic sciences more likely to indicate ‘don’t know’

Page 43: Faculty Council Meeting & Town Hall - McGill

Next steps: Additional perspectives

• Focus Group with Basic Science representatives– November 1, 2016– Clarify needs and priorities

• A key stakeholder: Our students

Page 44: Faculty Council Meeting & Town Hall - McGill

Student perspectives

Online student survey (8 goals) Sept 12-Oct 7, 2016

– 70% female– 63.6% first half of

program

• Student responses from:– 158 medical (UGME)– 103 nursing – 86 PhD – 49 MSc – 46 BSc – 34 OT– 28 SLP – 25 residents – 21 PT– Other: 18

Page 47: Faculty Council Meeting & Town Hall - McGill
Page 48: Faculty Council Meeting & Town Hall - McGill

Results: Student survey

• Differences between groups OT followed by medicine and SLP students are most likely to

rate current performance higher than the other groups of students

BSc Science students uniformly rate priority of these goals lowerthan others

PhD students’ mean rating of interdisciplinary performance was lowest

Postdoctoral fellows showed greatest discrepancy between performance and priority

Consistently, those in first half of program rate current performance higher than those in second half of their program for ALL GOALS

Page 49: Faculty Council Meeting & Town Hall - McGill

Building our education strategic plan

• Select operational goals vs strategic goals

• Qualitative analysis of comments -> informs action plan (issues and solutions)

• Develop the action plan for strategic goals

Page 50: Faculty Council Meeting & Town Hall - McGill

The strategic plan

• The journey is as important as the destination– Mutual learning is key

• A flexible and adaptive process– Take advantage of new opportunities

• Be bold– New ideas, new ways

The journey is as important as the destination* Mutual learning is key

A flexible and adaptive process* Take advantage of new opportunities

Be bold* New ideas, new ways
