TEACHING FACULTY

Shawn A. Chillag, MDDr. Chillag graduated medical school of West Virginia University in 1973. After completing his internship at Charleston Area Medical Center, he returned to West Virginia University to finish out his residency in Internal Medicine in 1976 and a fellowship in Pulmonary in 1977. Dr. Chillag joined the Division of General Internal Medicine at USC in 2001, where he is currently Professor and Chair. His academic interests include debunking myths in medicine as well as improving and reforming the medical education.

Stephen H. Greenberg, MDDr. Greenberg joined the Division of General Internal Medicine at USC in 2006, where he is currently the Director of the residency program and Associate Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine. He graduated medical school from Tufts University School of Medicine in 1973, and completed his residency at New Britain General Hospital in 1980. Dr. Greenberg is board certified with the National Board of Medical Examiners and American Board of Internal Medicine. His academic interests include resident and medical student education as well as the cognitive psychology of medical reasoning and learning.

Allan S. Brett, MDDr. Brett graduated medical school from the University of Pennsylvania in 1972. After completing his residency in 1976 at the University of Pittsburg, Dr. Brett became a faculty fellow in Ethics and The Professions at Harvard University from 1990-1991. He joined the Division of General Internal Medicine at USC in 1995, where he is currently the Department Vice Chair and Director. Dr. Brett is also an Orlando Benedict Mayer Sr. and Jr. Professor of Medicine. His interests include medical ethics and clinical decision-making. He directs the medical school’s course in medical ethics and chairs the ethics committee at Palmetto Health Richland. Dr. Brett is the editor of Journal Watch®, a twice-monthly review of the general medical literature with 50,000 subscribers.

Divya Ahuja, MDDr. Ahuja joined the Division of Infectious Diseases in 2005, where he is currently Associate Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine. Dr. Ahuja graduated medical school in New Delhi, India in 1992, and completed parts of his residency in India and the United Kingdom before ending up at York Hospital in Pennsylvania from 2001-2003. After his residency, Dr. Ahuja completed a fellowship in Genitourinary Medicine and HIV at the Bristol Royal Infirmary and Plymouth Hospital in the United Kingdom in 2001. He also completed a fellowship in Infectious Disease at Penn State University College of Medicine in 2005.

Helmut Albrecht, MDDr. Albrecht joined the Division of Infectious Diseases in 2006, where he is currently the division Director and Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine. Dr. Albrecht graduated medical school and residency from the University of Hamburg in 1988 and 1993. He also completed a residency at Emory University in 2001. After his residency, Dr. Albrecht returned to the University of Hamburg where he completed a fellowship in Gastroenterology in 1993. He also completed a fellowship in Infectious Diseases at Emory University in 1999. Dr. Albrecht has considerable study experience as investigator, principal or coordinating investigator of multiple national and international trials since 1988. He serves a reviewer for AIDS, Clinical Investigator, CID, JID, and Annuals of

Internal Medicine, JAMA, EID, and other journals since 1993. He has published more than 100 articles in peer-reviewed journals and several book chapters. Dr. Albrecht is a member of the editorial board of “AIDS Clinical Care” and editor of HIV Medicine.

David Joseph Amrol, MDDr. Amrol graduated medical school magna cum laude from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in 1998. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in 2001. After his residency, Dr. Amrol continued his education at Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he completed a fellowship in Allergy and Immunology in 2003. Dr. Amrol joined the Division of Allergy and Immunology in 2003, where he is currently the Associate Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program, Director of the Division of Allergy and Immunology, and Assistant Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine. Dr. Amrol’s academic interests include asthma in adolescent patients, allergic rhinitis, anaphylaxis, food allergy, and immunodeficiency.

James A. Barker, MDDr. Barker joined the Division of Pulmonology and Critical Care Medicine in 2004, where he is currently the Division Chief of USC Pulmonary / Critical Care / and Sleep Disorders Medicine. He is also a Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine and is the Senior Medical Director at Palmetto Health Richland. Dr. Barker graduated medical school from the University of Kansas in 1980, and completed his residency at the University of Kentucky where he was Chief Resident in 1985. He also completed a Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship at the University of Miami in 1987. Dr. Barker’s academic interests include teaching mechanical ventilation and critical care topics, the application of evidence based medicine in critical care, education research, and sleep medicine problems.

Charles S. Bryan, MDDr. Bryan graduated medical school from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1964 where he also completed his residency in 1967. After completing his fellowship in Infectious Disease at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in 1974, Dr. Bryan worked at a private practice before joining the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in 1977. Since then, Dr. Bryan has held many titles including Heyward Gibbes Distinguished Professor of Internal Medicine. His academic interests include clinical infectious diseases, hospital epidemiology, and history of medicine and the medical humanities.

Sangita Dash, MDDr. Dash graduated medical school from B.L.D.E.A’s Shri B.M. Patil Medical College, India in 1998. After completing her residency at New York Methodist Hospital in 2004, Dr. Dash continued her education at the Medical University of South Carolina as fellow in Infectious Diseases. In 2006, she joined the Division of Infectious Disease at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine where she is currently Assistant Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine. Dr. Dash participates in teaching rounds with residents and medical students.

Wayne A. Duffus, MDDr. Duffus joined the Division of Infectious Diseases in 2004 where he is currently Assistant Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine. He graduated medical school from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1995 where he also earned his PhD in Virology. After completing his residency in Internal Medicine at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in 1998, Dr. Duffus completed a Research Fellowship with the CDC at the Epidemiology Branch in Atlanta, GA and also a Clinical Fellowship in Infectious Diseases at Emory University School of Medicine in 2002. Dr. Duffus also served as an Epidemic Service Officer for the CDC in Atlanta, GA from 2002-2004.

Bruce M. Easterling, MDDr. Easterling joined the Division of Geriatrics in 2005 after completing his Geriatrics Fellowship at Palmetto Health Richland. He also was a Family Medicine resident at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and Palmetto Health Richland from 2001-2004. Prior to his residency, Dr. Easterling earned his undergraduate degree from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1991 and went to medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina where he graduated in 2001. Dr. Easterling is Director of Home-based Primary Care at Dorn VA Hospital and is DVAMC Assistant Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine. His interests include elderly home care and driving in the elderly.

G. Paul Eleazer, MDDr. Eleazer completed pre-medical studies at The University of South Carolina and medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina. He completed his residency at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in 1983. He has had a variety of private practice, administrative medicine and academic experiences. He is Professor of Medicine, and serves as the Director of the Division of Geriatrics, Department of Internal Medicine, USCSOM. Dr. Eleazer’s research focuses on medical education research, and health service delivery and ethnicity.

James W. Fant, Jr., MDDr. Fant graduated medical school from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1986. He completed his residency at Memorial Hospital and East Carolina University in Greenville, NC in 1989. Dr. Fant also completed a Rheumatology Fellowship at Wilford Hall, USAF-MC in Lackland, AFB, San Antonio, Texas in 1991. He joined the Division of Rheumatology in 2001 where he is currently the division Director and Associate Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine. His academic interests include systemic rheumatologic disorders and software development - computerized medical record and rheumatology progress note generation.

Joseph A. Horvath, MDDr. Horvath joined the Division of Infectious Diseases in 1996 where he is currently Associate Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine. He graduated medical school from Temple University Medical School in 1988, and completed his residency at the University of Connecticut Health Center in 1991. Dr. Horvath also completed an Infectious Diseases Fellowship at Vanderbilit University School of Medicine in 1994 before joining the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. His academic interests include infectious diseases, fungal infections, and immunocompromised hosts.

Davinder Lally, MDDr. Lally completed pre-medical and graduate studies at the University of Southampton School of Medicine in England in 1983. After completing her residency at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and Palmetto Health Richland in 1987, she joined the Division of General Internal Medicine. Dr. Lally’s academic interests include women’s health and outpatient medicine. She Is currently the Internal Medicine Clerkship Director for third and fourth year students. She also precepts residents in ambulatory clinic and serves as the residents’ inpatient attending physician.

Tu Lin, MDDr. Lin graduated medical school from National Taiwan University College of Medicine in Taiwan in 1966. He completed his internship at Episcopal Hospital, Philadelphia in 1968 and his medical residency at Berkshire Medical Center in 1970. Dr. Lin also completed a fellowship in Endocrinology and Medical Science Research at Brown University in 1973. He joined the Division of Endocrinology in 1976 where he is currently the division Director and Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine. Dr. Lin’s academic interests include basic research in area of male reproductive endocrinology and also carrying out clinical trials in the area of diabetes research. Over the years, he has published 76 research articles, 11 book chapters and 95 abstracts. He served on the Merit Review

Board of Endocrinology, Department of Veterans Affairs from 1990-1994. He also served on the Editorial Board of Journal of Andrology from 1993 to 1996 and Biology of Reproduction from 1990-1995. He received research award from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in 1981, 1989 and 1995. Recently he was appointed to the editorial board of Endocrinology, an official journal of the Endocrine Society from 2005 to 2008. In his role as Program Director in the Division of Endocrinology, Dr. Lin attends on wards as well as in endocrine clinics.

Philip E. Lowman, MDDr. Lowman graduated medical school from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in 2005. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and Palmetto Health in 2008 before joining the Division of General Internal Medicine where he is currently Instructor of Clinical Internal Medicine. Dr. Lowman as received several awards including the Thomas Watts Award, IM Resident of the Year, Teaching Award, and the WJB Dorn “Dark and Stormy Night” Award. Dr. Lowman enjoys outpatient teaching, inpatient attending, and medical student didactics.

Annette W. Lynn, MDDr. Lynn graduated medical school form the University of South Carolina School of Medicine where she also completed her residency in Pediatric Medicine. She also completed a Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery Fellowship at the University of South Florida before returning to the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in 1992 where she is currently the Director of the Division of Dermatology and Assistant Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine. Her academic interests include providing clinical rotations for approximately 60 residents and students each year. She also regularly advises students seeking Dermatology Fellowships.

B. James McCallum, MDDr. McCallum graduated medical school from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in 2001. He also completed his residency at the university in Internal Medicine in 2004 before joining the faculty the same year. His academic interests include medical student and resident education. Dr. McCallum’s teaching activities include VA ward attending as well as VA clinic attending at the Dorn VA Hospital where he is DVAMC Assistant Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine with the Division of General Internal Medicine.

Franklin R. McGuire, MDDr. McGuire joined the Division of Pulmonology and Critical Care Medicine in 2006 where he is currently Assistant Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine. He graduated medical school from the University of Kentucky in 1999 and completed his residency at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in 2001. He also completed a Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship at the University of Virginia in 2006. Dr. McGuire’s academic interests include interventional pulmonology and thoracic oncology. His teaching activity includes teaching rounds with residents.

Juan E. Morales, MDDr. Morales joined the Division of Pulmonology and Critical Care Medicine in 2008 where he is currently Assistant Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine. He graduated medical school from Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, Lima, Peru in 1996, and completed his residency at Southern Illinois University in 2001. He also completed a Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship at The Ohio State University in 2004 where he was also Chief Fellow. Dr. Morales lists his academic interest as being ARDS, septic shock, mechanical ventilation, and pulmonary infections.

Suneetha Morthala, MDDr. Morthala graduated medical from Universidad Iberoamericana in the Dominican Republic in 1998. She completed her residency at New York Methodist Hospital and Drexel University College of Medicine in 2003. She also completed a fellowship in Rheumatology at the University of Pennsylvania in 2005 before joining the Division of Rheumatology at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in 2006. Dr. Morthala’s academic interests include systemic lupus erythematosus and scleroderma.

Juraj Osterman, MDDr. Osterman joined the Division of Endocrinology in 1978 where he is currently Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine. He graduated medical school from the University of Zagreb in Croatia in 1961. He completed his residency in 1975 at Pennsylvania State University where he also completed a fellowship in Endocrinology in 1978. Dr. Osterman’s academic interests include pathophysiology of endocrine systems and metabolism, which he teaches second year medicine and graduate students. His clinical interests are pituitary tumors, lipid disorders, adrenal diseases, and male reproductive disorders.

William Owens, MDDr. Owens joined the Division of Pulmonology and Critical Care Medicine in 2004 where he is currently Assistant Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine and Medical Director of the MICU at Palmetto Health Richland. He graduated medical school form the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in 2000 and completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at Earl K. Long Medical Center (LSU affiliate) in 2003. He also completed a Critical Care Medicine fellowship at the University of South Florida Health Sciences Center in 2004. Dr. Owen’s academic interests include neurocritical care, mechanical ventilation, and sepsis.

Linda A. Perkins, MDDr. Perkins graduated medical school from The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston in 2000. She completed her residency at Scott & White in 2004 where she also completed a fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical care in 2007. Dr. Perkins is currently Assistant Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine with the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. She is also the Medical Director of the MSU at Palmetto Health Richland. Dr. Perkins’ academic interest includes interstitial lung disease.

Mary Beth Poston, MDDr. Poston joined the Division of Internal Medicine in 2004 where she is currently Assistant Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine. She graduated medical school from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in 1999 where she also completed her residency in 2002. She completed an Academic Generalist and MS Clinical Research Fellowship in 2004. Academically, Dr. Poston is interested in the increasing physical activity of obese adults in primary care (clinical and research interest).

Caroline K. Powell, MDDr. Powell joined the Division of Internal Medicine in 2007 where she is currently Associate Director of Internal Medicine Residency Program and Assistant Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine. She graduated medical school from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in 2001. She completed her residency at Emory University in 2004 and an Academic Generalist/Health Sciences Research Fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina in 2007. Dr. Powell’s teaching activities include the Medicine in the News lecture series as well as assisting with the direction of 3rd year Internal Medicine student clerkship.

Donna D. Ray, MDDr. Ray graduated medical school from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine where she also completed her residency and a fellowship in Geriatrics. She joined the Division of Geriatrics in 2003 where she is currently Assistant Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine and Director of Faculty Development for the School of Medicine. Dr. Ray’s academic interests include issues and methods of medical education in geriatrics as well as faculty development for evaluation and teaching related to the General Competencies in resident education.

Muhammad Ali Raza, MDDr. Raza graduated medical school from Allama/Obal Medical College in Pakistan in 1995. He completed his residency at Marshfield Clinic, Wisconsin in 2002 and a fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin in 2005. Dr. Raza joined the Division of Pulmonology and Critical Care Medicine in 2005 where he is currently Assistant Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine. His academic interest relates to pulmonary hypertension and his research interests include sleep and hypoxia as well as the etiology of pulmonary hypertension.

Nancy Richeson, MDDr. Richeson joined the Division of Internal Medicine in 1983 where she is currently Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine. She graduated medical school from the Medical College of Virginia in 1980 and completed her residency at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine/Palmetto Health in 1983. Dr. Richeson’s academic interests include medical education, clinical assessment, and standardized patients.

Ali A. Rizvi, MDDr. Rizvi graduated medical school from King Edward Medical College in Pakistan and completed his internship at the Mayo Hospital in Pakistan and at Nassau County Medical Center in New York. He completed his residency at the Cleveland Clinic in 1993 and a fellowship at Stanford University in 1995. Dr. Rizvi joined the Division of Endocrinology in 2005 where he is currently Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine. He is particularly interested in intensive glucose monitoring and optimal treatment of diabetes and its complications both in outpatient setting and in the hospitalized patients, and diabetes management.

John Schenck, MDDr. Schenck joined the Division of Endocrinology in 2007 where he is currently Assistant Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine and Chief of the division. He graduated medical school from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in 1999 where he also completed his residency in Internal Medicine in 2003. He also completed a fellowship in Endocrinology at the university / Palmetto Health Richland in 2005. Dr. Schenck’s derives satisfaction form the teaching of medical students, residents, and endocrine fellows.

Andrew W. Sides, MDDr. Sides graduated medical school from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in 2006 and completed his residency at Carolinas Medical Center in 2009. He joined the Division of Internal Medicine in 2009 where he is currently Assistant Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine. Dr. Sides lists his primary academic interest as resident and medical student education.

Stuart M. Smith, MDDr. Smith graduated medical school from Ross University School of Medicine in 1998 and completed his residency at the University of South Carolina in 2001. He joined the faculty in 2001 where he is currently DVAMC Assistant Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine, Academic Hospitalist, and Acting/Associate Director of Primary Care and Subspecialty Medicine at the Dorn VA hospital.

M. Shawn Stinson, MDDr. Stinson graduated medical school from Duke University School of Medicine in 1988 and completed his residency at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1991. He also completed a fellowship in Faculty Development at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in 1998. Dr. Stinson joined the faculty in 1995 where he is currently Associate Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine, Vice-President of Clinical Quality and Patient Safety, and Interim Vice-President of Medical Affairs at Palmetto Health. His academic interests include medical education and computers in medicine.

Tracy R. Voss, MDDr. Voss joined the Division of Internal Medicine in 1993 where she is currently Assistant Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine. She graduated medical school from the University of Wisconsin in 1986 and completed her residency at the Harvard Program in 1990. Dr. Voss’ academic interest includes women’s health issues.

Antoinette L. Williams, MDDr. Williams joined the Division of Pulmonology and Critical Care Medicine in 2008 where she is currently Assistant Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine. She graduated medical school and completed her residency from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in 2001 and 2004. She also completed fellowships in Critical Care Medicine, Pulmonary Disease, and Sleep Medicine at the University of Maryland. Dr. Williams’ academic interests include sleep and women and, more specifically, the effects of sleep apnea as it relates to pregnant women.
