Course Director Featured Speakers Jeffrey Jentzen, MD Professor and Director, Autopsy and Forensic Services Department of Pathology, University of MIchigan Health System Lindsey Thomas, MD Medical Examiner, Minnesota Regional ME Office Faculty Bios Dr. Jentzen is a member of numerous professional organizations including the National Association of Medical Examiners where he served as Vice-President in 2007, and President in 2008. He was the recipient of the Outstanding Service Award from the National Association of Medical Examiners in 2001, the Outstanding Service Award from the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators in 2002 and the President's Award from the National Association of Medical Examiners in October 2007. He is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and Forensic Pathology. Dr. Jentzen joined the faculty of the Department of Pathology in March 2008 as Professor and Director of Autopsy and Forensic Pathology Services. Dr. Lindsey Thomas is the chief pathologist covering nine counties in south- central Minnesota. She has extensive experience in the field of death investi- gation and throughout her career has been an advocate for improving death investigation practices nationwide. She has assisted in the creation of a model autopsy protocol for victims of torture and enhanced policies governing investi- gation of hospice deaths. Dr. Thomas will speak on the investigation of burned bodies and difficult case investigations. Victor Weedn, MD Associate Medical Examiner, Baltimore, Maryland Dr. Weedn is a member of many organizations and committees activity involved in the forensic science community. His major interests include DNA technology and legal applications to forensic medicine. In 1988 he joined the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology and created the military DNA Registry. He has been personally involved in the identification of Czar Nicolas II, the occu- pant of the tomb of the Unknown Soldier, victims of the Branch Davidian fire, and the TWA Flight 800 victims. Dr. Weedn has been instrumental in develop- ing papers related to genetic privacy and has testified in on issues of genetic testing in US congress. He will speak on identification of Czar Nicolas II, identification of America’s war dead, and provide a workshop on DNA technol- ogy for death investigators.

Faculty Bios

Dr. Milroy is the Professor and Staff Forensic Pathologist at the Ottawa Hospi-tal. His areas of research interest include drug-related deaths, forensic medi-cine and human rights, and legal aspects of the expert witness. Dr. Milroy was a member of the Goudge Report which has heavily influenced the practice of forensic medicine in Canada. Dr. Milroy will present on the histopathology of drug deaths.

Steven C.Clark, PhDDirector ORA

Carl J. Schmidt, MD, MPHChief Medical Examiner, Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office, Detroit, MI

Dr. Schmidt is the Chief Medical Examiner at the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office, one of the busiest morgue in the nation, with nearly 3,000 autopsies performed annually. He is a Diplomate in Anatomical, Clinical and Forensic Pathology by the American Board of Pathology. Dr. Schmidt is an internationally recognized expert in forensic pathology ad regularly lectures in Latin American countries. His professional interests include neuropathology and public health issues.

Dr. Clark is a nationally recognized occupational standards, assessment and curriculum developer, who has worked with various private and public sector agencies for over twenty-five years. He has directed national projects for both the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the National Institute of Justice (NIJ). Most notably the CDC’s National Sudden Infant Death Investigation Academies and the NIJ’s National Death Scene Guidelines Project. Dr. Clark is co-creator of the first national missing and unidentified decedent reporting system (NamUs) and serves as a technical advisor to the National Center for Forensic Sciences (NCFS) and the National Forensic Science and Technology Center (NFSTC) on the NamUs program - which was awarded the 2009 IACP-iXP Excellence in Technology Award given by the International Association of Chiefs of Police’s for the best Innovation in Information Technology and Computerworld’s 2010 Laureate award for software the serves society. In addition, Steve serves as the Research and Development Director for the National Association of Medical Examiners (NAME), and the certification and testing director for the: American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigation (ABMDI), the Board of Forensic Document Examiners (BFDE) and the American Board of Forensic Odontologists (ABFO).

Dr. Ross Reichard went to medical school at the University of Louisville and received his anatomic and neuropathology training at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas and Stanford University. He did his forensic pathology training at the Office of the Medical Investigator in Albuquerque New Mexico, where is currently on staff and is the Assistant Chief Medical Investigator. His research interests are primarily in traumatic brain injury (TBI), particularly pediatric TBI.

Faculty Bios

A staff nurse at the Veterans Affairs Ann Arbor health Care System in Ann Arbor, MI, in the Cardiology Outpatient Unit, Ms. Briggs received her BSN and BSW at Eastern Michigan University. She is a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner and Coordinator in the Emergency Department at St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, as well as being a CN III Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Educator.

Dr. Amanda Fisher-Hubbard is currently a House Officer in the Department of Pathology at the University of MIchigan Health System. She received her Bachelors of Science degree from the University of Toledo in Bioengineering in 2005 and her MD from the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medi-cine in 2009. Dr. Fisher-Hubbard is avidly pursuing a career in forensic pathology, and during her residency training at the University of Michigan Department of Pathology she has been involved in many interesting and educational forensic cases. Of note are her contributions to several H1N1 cases at the U of M in 2009 which resulted in both an American Journal of Clinical Pathology publication and a presentation at the 2010 National Associ-ate of Medical Examiners meeting. She is also a resident member of NAME.

Jennifer Dohring, BSForensic Scientist, Michigan State Police, Northville Crime Lab

Ms. Dohring is a forensic scientist with the Michigan State Police Northville Crime Laboratory. In 2008 she received the New Scientist of the Year Award from the Midwestern Association of Forensic Scientist (MAFS) for her contribu-tion to the forensic science field, her high level of motivation and service. Ms. Dohring received her training from the John Jay College of Criminal Justice with a BS in forensic science criminalistics and toxicology.
