Each day in companies around the world, millions of Microsoft Excel worksheets are being maintained, formulas edited, and analysis paths updated — all by hand. With constantly increasing amounts of data, this is cumbersome and prone to error. Jedox Spreadsheet: Jedox Spreadsheet off ers users the familiar interface and ease of operation they know from Microsoft Excel, but also provides additional features such as DynaRanges (a dynamic formatting technol-ogy), which make creating dynamic reports and planning templates sig-nifi cantly easier. With Jedox Web, users are able to access centrally stored reports (“single point of truth”), edit them in a number of diff erent ways, and then display them in real time. In addition, users will also be able to generate state of the art visualizations with dynamic diagrams or accord-ing to the SUCCESS chart model.

Jedox Modeller: The Jedox Modeler was conceived for the design and maintenance of Jedox OLAP models. With its intuitive modeling environ-ment, even business users without previous experience will be able to create dimensions, add new elements, and combine them in data cubes. Jedox Web uses the same, intuitive Modeler interface as the Jedox Excel Add-in, so users already familiar with the interface can benefi t in both environments.

Jedox File Manager: Jedox File Manager allows business users to man-age and organize spreadsheets and other related content in a secure, used-based administrative environment. Jedox File Manager provides in-dividual data storage areas for each Jedox application and user, allowing the source fi les and related information, such as PDF, text, or images, to be integrated quickly and easily into a Jedox application.

Jedox Report Manager: The Report Manager allows users to effi ciently access all content that is being managed in the Jedox File Manager. To do so, hierarchical report folders can be created at will. With the use of variables, these can then be defi ned dynamically via user groups or in a data-dependent manner.

Jedox ETL Manager: Jedox ETL Manager allows for the creation, moni-toring, and execution of data integration projects with multiple external data sources. The Jedox OLAP Server is at the heart of Jedox’ Business Intelligence and Performance Management platform. Unlike traditional relational data-base systems (RDBMS), this multidimensional in-memory server crunches numbers at an impressive speed. This is because the Jedox OLAP database stores all data in its random access memory, which not only allows for rapid data access, but also the write-back and immediate consolidation of analysis results. Traditional relational databases organize data into tables, data items and fi elds, while the data modeling in the OLAP (“OnLine Analytical Process-ing”) server exists in the form of cubes, dimensions and elements. This adaptive structure supports the dynamic analysis of corporate data and precisely depicts how users see their company. With the multidimensional model used by the Jedox OLAP Server, data crucial for decision-making can be viewed from a number of diff erent perspectives (“slice and dice”, “rotate”). In addition, end users are able to fl exibly navigate through the company’s information base and have business correlations displayed in both a detailed (“drill down”) and an aggregated (“roll up”) manner. Control parameters, such as those for procurement controlling, can eas-ily be evaluated according to a whole array of disparate criteria, such as articles, article groups, suppliers, supplier groups, purchasers, and time periods. The Jedox OLAP Server functions as a central database (“single point of truth”) in which users throughout the company and in the network are able to access and modify central BI data. All input data and qualitative results are stored centrally, such that even multiple departments are able to work together in a coordinated and resource-saving manner. The vary-ing access rights and user profi les are administered via a sophisticated user management system. Business users expect the maximum amount of effi ciency and functional-ity from their Business Intelligence and Performance Management tools, including the ability to access the most diverse of data sources at any point in time. The integration of multiple, disparate data sources gener-ally results in signifi cantly improved workfl ow for the end user, therefore the objective is to combine heterogeneously structured data from a wide array of sources into a single OLAP server in order to tap into the data’s full potential for analysis. This process of extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) needs to fulfi ll both high-performance and high quality standards.

"Self-Service DI (Data Integration)" with Jedox ETL

Extraction

Jedox developed Jedox ETL as a powerful extraction tool that is tailored to the needs of OLAP analyses and completely integrated into the BI & PM solution. The ETL component takes care of the fully automatic and schedulable import and export of large volumes of data, allowing it to fl exibly adapt to the requirements of the daily reality of business users. Data from heterogeneous sources is extracted, and master and variable data is transformed and mapped to Jedox models.

Jedox ETL is a client-server based application, which means that the modeling of ETL processes takes place in a user-friendly web interface. Furthermore, the ETL tool can also be easily integrated into other applica-tions with the SOAP-based (“Simple Object Access Protocol”) web service interface. Hence, no programming is required and business users can in-dependently confi gure all processes — this is what we call self-service data integration at Jedox!

Data queries on source systems are defi ned in so-called “extracts” by the Jedox ETL solution. The integrated ETL component interfaces with all popular relational database systems, such as Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, and PostgreSQL, and links up to them via a well-established JDBC interface. Furthermore, users can extract additional data from fl at fi les, XML fi les, web services and LDAP systems.

After data extraction the required transformation steps are mapped to “transforms” with the following possible actions: normalize, aggregate, join, fi lter and sort. For fi eld-by-fi eld data transformation, predefi ned functions such as mapping and concatenation are available, but more complex user-defi ned transformations are also possible with the use of the standard script languages Groovy and JavaScript. In addition, spe-cial hierarchical transformation options are also provided for the genera-tion, fi ltering and linking of dimensional data. Jedox ETL allows users to view the results of the transformation and the transfer process during the modeling process, in a convenient data preview, and hence enables users to keep track of the ETL process more easily, at all times.

With the “Loads” function, data that has been successfully extracted and transformed is written to the target system. For the creation of dimen-sions, a variety of modes are available that manage the updating of el-ements and consolidation as needed. Dimensions and data cubes are created through the optimal utilization of the interface at an exceedingly high level of performance, such that cubes with more than a billion cells can also be loaded into the target system. Furthermore, Jedox ETL sup-ports the highly-effi cient “direct drill through” feature; a form of vertical search during which the physical data source can be swapped in order to make more detailed data available. After the ETL modeling has concluded, Jedox can automatically generate project documentation that contains not only descriptions, but also process diagrams.

Jedox SAP Connector off ers the quickest way to transport data out of SAP systems into Jedox. Installation is easy and the entire extraction process can be modeled in the graphical Jedox Web front end — no knowledge of ABAP is required. Jedox ETL is a powerful tool that has been optimized for loading large amounts of data into the Jedox OLAP server without the need to create intermediary fl at fi les, and extract, transform, and load processes are confi gured and executed rapidly.

Wherever your SAP data is stored, all SAP Netweaver-based systems are supported, and security and authorization requirements are satisfi ed. For SAP ERP and SAP Business Warehouse (BW), there is a special business content option for user-friendly data extraction.

Add-on for Jedox ETLJedox SAP Connector is an add-on for Jedox ETL, the standard tool for the extraction, transformation and loading of large volumes of external, disparate data sources. Jedox ETL off ers a wide array of transformation options, such as the ability to enrich SAP data with non-SAP data. In this manner, the relational model of the source system is effi ciently mapped to an OLAP model.

Uplink to SAP ERP With Jedox SAP Connector, it is possible to extract all data from all SAP modules (e.g. FI, CO, MM etc.). Under the hood, Jedox has incorporated RFC function modules (BAPIs) and SAP tables, and enhanced them with custom-defi ned extraction types in order to easily handle structures such as cost centers, cost types, internal orders or PSP elements. This provides convenient means of confi guring the extraction without requiring knowl-edge of the underlying SAP tables. The Jedox ETL installation also includes several clearly-designed, ready-to-run ETL sample projects.

Uplink to SAP BW With SAP’s standard tools, the creation of fl exible planning applications based on SAP Business Warehouse can be tedious and time-consuming. Jedox SAP Connector includes a BW business content option, allowing for convenient and rapid extraction of SAP BW data to Jedox. Whether ex-tracting BW InfoObjects including attributes and texts, or multiple time- and version-dependent hierarchies into a Jedox OLAP dimension, with our BW business content option, users can work quickly and in a targeted manner. Additionally, mass data can be extracted both from the Data Warehouse layer by linking up to SAP Data Store Objects (DSO), or as SAP Infocubes. This allows users of the Jedox SAP Connector to independently improve their SAP BW environment via fl exible planning processes (“Self-Service BI”).

Easy construction of hierarchiesThe most complicated part of an ETL process for OLAP models is often the correct handling of the master data — complex hierarchies with multiple levels, consolidations and attributes. In both Jedox ETL and Jedox SAP Connector, this process has been optimized, and they are able to recon-struct analysis-based hierarchies. Furthermore, the business content for SAP also makes it possible to directly load profi t center hierarchies from SAP ERP or InfoObject hierarchies from SAP BW without having to directly load transformations into Jedox. Custom settings, such as writing to mul-tiple hierarchies or data cleansing, are also possible.

In its OLAP Accelerator, Jedox makes use of the computing power of the latest NVIDIA® Tesla™ GPUs as used in the high performance computing sector. With these high-perfor-mance GPU components, the already high processing speed of the Jedox in-memory OLAP server can be increased by an additional factor of up to 20x, depending on the data model.

In-GPU memoryModern GPU modules consist of thousands of processor cores, and it is particularly in complex and parallelizable computing tasks that they demonstrate a marked performance advantage over CPUs. Parallel pro-cessing signifi cantly increases the speed at which data access and analysis can be carried out, especially when it comes to calculations involving consolidated cells in OLAP data cubes.

In order to minimize time-consuming data transfers from the main mem-ory to the GPU, Jedox capitalizes on innovative in-GPU memory technol-ogy; the Jedox OLAP Accelerator stores the cubes’ cell data entirely in the GPU memory, such that only queries and results need to be transferred between the CPU and the GPU. For the user, this means that applications run signifi cantly faster, and important data is provided instantly. Addi-tionally, multiple GPUs can be utilized at the same time for even shorter query times and to provide even more GPU storage for especially large data cubes.
